Mackay based John Mazelmann knows how to train a winner in both thoroughbred and harness racing, having racked up well over 1000 wins in each code. Traditionally a harness man, John swapped to the gallopers simply because the harness track numbers disappeared. John now has over 50 thoroughbreds in work, with runners at mutiple tracks every weekend. Lachie Manzlemann followed in his dad's footsteps, taking out a group one as a harness driver as well as training both pacers and trotters. Lachie has also now turned his hand to training thoroughbreds and has made the move to Mackay to give the country circuit a good hitout. This is part two of last month's episode about the new era of horsemanship. (If you haven't already, be sure to listen to part one from last month!) In this month's episode, we'll continue our conversation about science-based, non-forceful training methods, busting old mythology, and changing narratives around the way we talk about horses. I'll leave you with the 10 principles of horse training, as stated by equine behaviorists, that give us important guidelines to follow when we're working with horses. In my new segment. Long Story Short, I'll tell you about taking my son on his very first trail ride—and the terrifying moment I had in the middle of it. And in What the Hay? Q&A at the end of the episode, I'll answer questions from listeners about a Standardbred with an out-of-character behavior in his stall, and a mom who is unsure about letting her daughter join her school's equestrian team after witnessing training methods that troubled her. Standardbred racing takes the stage this week – Woodbine's Bill McLinchey tells us about 3 significant changes to the Mohawk Million and a few more bucks added to the Metro Pace. Phil Hudon was just as amazed as we were when he won 4 in one night recently, and he breaks down his most excellent night. Linday Rainey of the Canadian Horse Racing JHall of Fame explains how you can bid for a service from among the most impressive thoroughbred and standardbred stallions. Talking about stallions – not only does Garnet Barnsdale provide us endless material for this podcast, he is also the sire of Nicholas Barnsdale who is a finalist at the O'Brien Awards in the Media Excellence Writing category. And if you thought after last Thursday that Belichick would never win again, you were wrong.

In The Money Media is now happy to feature coverage for stakes action from Hollywood Casino At The Meadows starting with the $95,790 Currier & Ives Trot on Saturday (June 17) -- a race which some in harness racing's past have used as a stepping stone to the $1-million Hambletonian on the first Saturday in August. Pribozie, Plowcha and Tiger also provide thoughts for the 50-cent Late Pick 4, which has its opening leg in the second Currier & Ives division. The sequence runs from Race 10 through Race 13 on a card that gets underway at 12:45 p.m. (EDT).
Dr. Tania Cubitt and Katy Starr interview Penn State Equine Extension Educator, Laura Kenny about how to know if your pasture is adequate, if improvements need to be made, or if it's a total loss that needs to start over through pasture evaluation techniques. Laura also shares some tips on how to get the most out of a pasture to benefit the horse and the environment. Laura and Dr. Cubitt talk about why horse owners should determine their goals with their horses before reseeding or improving pastures, and finding a good balance between what is good for the pasture and soil but what is also needed for specific horses, particularly ones struggling with metabolic disorders. They also discuss foxtail, including what it is, how to identify it and differentiate it from timothy grass, and how to get rid of it. I love New Year's and all that it represents—ushering out the old, ringing in the new. I'm not much of a partier on New Year's Eve, but I AM at a stage of life where each year is precious to me, and making the most of my life takes on greater significance. I've always been serious about planning my time and making new years resolutions, and this year I'm bringing you on this journey with me! Next month, we're starting a nine month roadmap to help you achieve, accomplish, and soar in your horsemanship. We call it Horse Goals or Bust! I'll help you set meaningful horsemanship goals, how to assess both you and your horse to come up with realistic training and conditioning plans, guide you through planning and logistics, and help you stay on track and meet your goals by next fall. In this episode of my podcast, I want to talk to you about dreaming big, scheming hard, and imagining your best horse life. We'll talk about reflecting on the year behind us, how to envision an amazing future, and crafting meaningful goals that will fuel your plan of action. Plus, in What the Hay, Q&A, I'll answer questions from listeners about a green rider on a green horse, a bolting Mustang, and a Standardbred who is over-sensitive to touch. Baking dish (rectangular, square or oval. We prefer oval)MicroplanerLarge bowlFoil lined baking sheetIngredients4-5 large russet potatoes.6-8 oz Swiss gruyere grated3-4 oz parmesan-reggiano grated (mix with Swiss gruyere)3-4 garlic cloves microplaned2 Tbsp dry thyme2 Tbsp nutmeg16-20oz heavy creme Directions1. Grease baking dish with butter and set aside.2. Preheat oven to 450 degrees (F).3. Peel and slice potatoes.4. In a large bowl add garlic, thyme, nutmeg and heavy creme; whisk until combined. Then add2/3 of cheese to bowl (reserving the rest cheese for final stage of baking).5. Working in batches, mix the sliced potatoes with creme and cheese.6. Stack potato slices (w/ bits of cheese) in a hasselback/accordion fashion around the dish sothat the slices are standing on end. Any left over cheese that didn't get stacked between thepotato slices can be spread on top and/or tucked in between the rows of potatoes.7. Poor the creme mixture over the potatoes filling the dish to at least 3/4 up the side. Covertightly with foil, put on center of baking sheet and place on center rack of oven, cook covered for30 minutes.8. Remove foil and cook uncovered for another 30 minutes.9. Remove from oven, cover top of potatoes with remaining cheese and cook (still uncovered)15-20 minutes (or desired tenderness). Let rest for 10 minutes. Note:-Baking sheet helps to catch any creme/cheese that may happen to “escape”.-Keep extra creme on hand if using a larger baking dish. Larger baking dishes will require morecreme to ensure the potatoes are sufficientSupport the show
