Pacific Northwest acoustic guitarist Eric Skye occupies a unique niche between folk, jazz and blues, between fingerstyle and flatpicking, and between composition and improvisation. A lifetime of eclectic interests and adventuresome exploration culminates into a fully realized and identifiable personal style and tone. Eric's wide-ranging body of work is threaded together with an uncluttered minimalist's aesthetic, a passion for in-the-moment music making, and a love of pure acoustic tone.
My guest on the podcast this week is Eric Skye, who joins me to celebrate the album 'Phillips, Grier & Flinner'.Released in 1999 on Compass Records, it marks the first collaboration between bassist Todd Phillips, guitarist David Grier, and mandolinist Matt Flinner and features three original tunes from each.We chat about how Eric first discovered the record and why it means so much to him, plus what's so special about these three musicians and this collection of tunes. We also chat about the album's sound and why listening is such an important part of making (and understanding) music. This was a fantastic conversation to get to have and it's always a pleasure talking to Eric. You can buy 'Phillips, Grier and Flinner' on CD or as a digital download in mp3,FLAC or WAV via the Compass Records websiteFor more info on Eric's music and production services, check out ericskye.comThe Chris Thile and David Grier bootleg we discuss in the episode is available via sugarmegs:Part 1Part 2 SetlistHappy picking,MattSend a message to Bluegrass Jam Along! Guitarist and producer Eric Skye talks about his practice routine
My guest this week is guitarist Eric Skye.We covered a lot of ground, including Eric's Santa Cruz signature model guitar, the joys of playing tunes slowly, why tone is so important and, especially, his wonderful new record of fiddle tune duets with Jamie Stillway, 'Over the Waterfall', which is released on January 13th.I loved this chat. My favourite conversations on the podcast tend to be more about why people play music, rather than what they play, and this is a wonderful example of the former. For more info check out the Eric Skye website. Make sure you check out the cool set of TABs on the teaching page, where you'll also find a link to the 30 day challenge we talked about. Synthesizers. BOOMING snare hits. Shredding. The 80s aren't known for acoustic guitar playing. But that's will change in this episode of Acoustic Tuesday! We'll be taking a look at the 10 best acoustic guitar albums of the 80s, paying close attention to some of the best flatpickers and fingerpickers of that decade. I'm not talking about one-off power ballads that use an acoustic guitar in the intro. I'm talking about whole albums that pushed the genre of acoustic guitar music. You'll recognize some classics on here like Tony Rice's "Church Street Blues," and Michael Hedge's "Aerial Boundaries." With each of the albums chosen, I'll highlight my favorite song off the album in the hopes that you can check them out for yourself. In addition to discussing the 10 best acoustic guitar albums of the 80s, you'll hear a very important story from TAC Family member Johnny. He noticed that he actually enjoys playing guitar now more than he did when he was younger. Why is this? Be sure to listen to him tell his story about building a routine that lets him find more fun, focus, and progress on his guitar journey. Last but not least, we'll also cover some of the latest acoustic guitar news. From chatting coffee with one of my favorite acoustic duos to checking out the beautiful craftsmanship of metal engravers and inlay workers, this episode is sure to scratch that acoustic guitar content itch. Two of the Fretboard Journal's favorite acoustic guitarists - Eric Skye and Jamie Stillway - join us this week for a fun chat about the making of their long-awaited duo album, 'Home on the Midrange.' We talk about the gear used to capture the album (a pair of Neumann KM184s), Jamie's forthcoming "slow, spacey" electric guitar project (which will employ her Maegen Wells archtop), plus a lot more. Learn more about the album here: https://jamiestillwayericskye.hearnow.com/home-on-the-midrange This episode is sponsored by Folkway Music. The Fretboard Journal's 48th issue is now available. Eric is a fantastic blues player and a torchbearer of the folk tradition. He had just released an album called Global Griot. We heard from Eric right after our feature so we, of course, hit him up for his responses to three burning questions we had for him. Check out his video response! #1 Harlem Street Singer Review This movie is something I think everyone should watch. This is the story of Reverend Gary Davis, from when he grew up in the deep south. He was an integral part of the 1960s folk scene. You'll agree it's a must watch documentary.
Eric is an amazingly talented acoustic artist who’s just released his 7th LP, Ballads and Blues. He does a great job melding Jimmy Page, Grant Green, bluegrass, folk and a dash of classical. He also has a signature guitar with Santa Cruz - one of their best-selling models Eric talks about his eclectic childhood, simplifying his life and what prompted him to do this, balancing work and home, what he learned from his dad before he passed, an incredible lesson in parenting, and having do carry out one of the truly most difficult tasks I’ve ever heard. 100% REAL, some deep diving here for sure: Subscribe https://www.everyonelovesguitar.com/subscribe/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EveryoneLovesGuitar/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/everyonelovesguitar/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/ELovesGuitar

Portland, Oregon's Eric Skye may be too humble to consider himself a great guitarist, but anyone who has heard this wonderful improviser in action would beg to differ. On this week's podcast, we talk to Skye about his early years playing music (including the job he held cleaning fish tanks so that he could pay for guitar lessons) and the music that inspires him today. We also hear about his new Santa Cruz signature model 00-sized guitar, which features many subtle refinements over the classic Martin design. All-told, it's a great 30 minute interview with one of the Pacific Northwest's best acoustic talents.
