In this episode, we had a great time talking with Rebecca Frazier about her latest release “Boarding Windows in Paradise , “ her obsession with flatpicking, and taking care ofyourself in a self-loving way. She also schools us on what flatpicking is! Grounded in her roots as a native Virginian, bluegrass trailblazer Rebecca Frazier found herselfreawakening to a whole new journey of inspiration and invention. For the flatpicking luminary, who achieved notoriety in the music world as the first woman ever to appear on the cover of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine, that creative rebirth turned into her most captivatingwork yet: BOARDING WINDOWS IN PARADISE, released September 13, 2024 on Compass Records. The album title seems appropriate, as Frazier stepped into these last years with more strength and intention than ever before. Like the generations of her ancestors who havelived along Virginia's coast, she, too, has weathered life's hurricanes and battering winds — and witnessed its luminous beauty — and she wanted to capture that juxtaposition on this record. We also chat about the album's sound and why listening is such an important part of making (and understanding) music. This was a fantastic conversation to get to have and it's always a pleasure talking to Eric. You can buy 'Phillips, Grier and Flinner' on CD or as a digital download in mp3,FLAC or WAV via the Compass Records websiteFor more info on Eric's music and production services, check out ericskye.comThe Chris Thile and David Grier bootleg we discuss in the episode is available via sugarmegs:Part 1Part 2 SetlistHappy picking,MattSend a message to Bluegrass Jam Along! Bluegrass musician Woody Platt joins us this week to talk about his new solo album, 'Far Away With You' (Compass Records). https://www.woodyplatt.com/music Woody is best known as the former frontman and cofounder of Steep Canyon Rangers. In 2022, after countless shows with SCR and backing Steve Martin on-stage, Platt stepped down from the band to be closer to home. Grammy winner John McEuen will release his new album, The Newsman, on April 12 on Compass Records. An unprecedented move for McEuen, the album is 10 spoken word tracks (and one instrumental), all mini-movies, with John's unique style of music behind each. From the opening title track, a true story about a man who sold newspapers and was a tremendous influence on the young musician in Los Angeles, to the final cut, “Julie's Theme,” inspired by Julies Verne telling a friend, in a French cemetery, about his recently deceased young wife, McEuen presents an album filled with stories that will inspire and perhaps bring a tear to your eye. The different tracks on the album range from “Killed at the Ford,” a Civil War-era poem that tells of the death of a young soldier as he and friends go to meet a picket-guard by a ford, not expecting trouble. A shot is fired from the woods, and the young man is dead. Poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow doesn't end the poem there, but relates how it affects the young man's family at home. “The Cremation of Sam McGee,” one of the most famous poems written by Robert Service, was published in 1907, told from the perspective of the man who cremates the prospector who died in the Yukon, while searching for gold. The Stephen Vincent Benét poem “The Mountain Whippoorwill” (published in 1925). “FlyTrouble” is a Hank Williams Sr. classic from 1949, and one of “talking blues”numbers that McEuen has recited many times over the past years.“OldRivers” was released by Walter Brennann1963, Thomas Monroe wrote “Nui Ba Den” while he was in Vietnam in 1968.More recent writings are “Pineapple John” by John Carter Cash, Hans Olson's“I'll Be Glad When I Run Out Of Gas” and Thaddeus Bryant's “Red Clay.” This album is a soundtrack for films not yet made.” McEuen says that watching the Tom Hanks film News of the World made him finish this album. “I feel like that character, having to read the news to people who have not yet heard it. And, my first ‘song', the title cut, was about that type of fellow, in a way, and his story had to be told.I find in this final year of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, this album comes in a good space. That was a great 50-year run for me, and now that it has run its course, it's time for The Newsman. I look forward to going out and telling people about those 50 years that impacted so many, especially me, playing some new music, and throwing a few of these stories in along the way.” McEuen believes these spoken word offerings can fit on radio. “It is my suggestion to add one of these cuts in between other music you are playing, finding styles that fit each – as they are each different. Listening to from top to bottom is a lot to ask of anyone! I look forward to seeing what people program with various cuts.” #nittygrittydirtband #spokenword #newalbum #newmusic #stevemartin #music #poetry #poems #tommyleejones #sissyspacek

Alison Brown is a Grammy Winning banjo player, composer and producer who has made a bunch of great albums under her own name but also as a sideperson and collaborator with artists like Alison Krauss, Michelle Shocked, and Stuart Duncan. She started playing as a youngster, first on dobro and then switched over to banjo. She spent her early years cutting her teeth at bluegrass events and venues around California, before veering away from music in the 80's to get her MBA from UCLA! Alison was working full-time in finance when she realized that she just didn't want to be doing that and dove back head-first into music. She joined Union Station with Alison Krauss in the late 80's and has never looked back. That band won a grammy in 1990, and then she joined Michelle Shocked's band and became her bandleader for a few years. Alison started her own quartet and has been recording albums with them since the early 90's. Her label, Compass Records, has grown to be one of the leading labels for roots music in the world, and her and and her husband Gary West run the whole thing out of the office and studio on music row. The studio itself is an incredible piece of history, known at one time as “Hillbilly Central” it's where some of the iconic records were made for Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. Alison's latest record “On Banjo” is a great example of her killer playing but also her composing and arranging skills. It features guests like Steve Martin, Sierra Hull, Sharon Isbin and the Kronos quartet and explores styles like Brazillian choro and bossa nova as well as bluegrass and old time. You can keep up with what she's up to, and get all her tour dates at alisonbrown.comBe sure to listen to the Accompanying Songs Playlist which contains some of the artist's work, plus many of the songs we discuss on the show:Playlist on Spotify / Playlist on Apple MusicIf you enjoyed this episode, please consider supporting the show with a donation or Patreon subscriptionThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.comYour fearless host, Steve Dawson can be found at www.stevedawson.ca Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/mmasspodcast. Now sober for many years, Farris has the energy and conviction of a man saved, a stack of anecdotes and life experiences that would make most people's heads spin, and a soulful vocal delivery reminiscent of Sam Cooke or Otis Redding. Last month, Farris released his soulful rendition of the Drivin' N' Cryin' classic, “Honeysuckle Blue” for the upcoming album “Let's Go Dancing: a Celebration of Kevn Kinney” on Tasty Goody Records. Episode 246: Alison Brown found her life's work early when she started playing banjo as a pre-teen growing up in southern California. But it took some time and real life experience - a Harvard degree, another MBA and a couple of years in banking - before she finally gave herself permission to chase a music career. She toured with Alison Krauss in her early days and then formed her own bands, earning her rep as an innovative, jazz-oriented virtuoso player. She's released about a dozen albums of her own composing, including the latest On Banjo, featuring guests like Stuart Duncan, Steve Martin and Anat Cohen. We sat down in the studio of Compass Records, which she co-founded with her husband more than 25 years ago, for a wide-ranging talk about her instrument, her destiny, and her latest music. Also in the hour, a teaser of my interview with Nashville journalist Tim Ghianni.

Today we're excited to welcome California native and now Nashville-based singer-songwriter, the always delightful Nicki Bluhm. “My perspective on life and love has made a shift, for the better,” shares Bluhm, the acclaimed artist behind Avondale Drive, her newest studio album out now on Compass Records.Bluhm pointed out in a recent Q&A that one silver lining of the pandemic was that all musicians were grounded at home and had time on their hands and were jonesing to be creative. With no touring happening, there were so many artists who decided to set up little home recording rooms. Because we were all physically isolated, she points out, sharing tracks and flying them to musician friends was a way to commune and collaborate, giving each musician the freedom to interpret, express and add to the songs in their own unique way. That's how Bluhm's new record came together, and you'll learn all about this hour. Part of Pantheon Podcasts

Piece Description On this week's episode of Tent Show Radio, savor an hour featuring archived recordings of music legends Richie Havens and Robert Cray. Richie Havens, known for his ragged voice, percussive musicianship, and soulful sensibility, is considered as one of the most influential artists of the 1960's. From playing Woodstock to Carnegie Hall, Havens had an extensive touring career that lasted up until the year before his passing in 2013. This episode features recordings from Haven's 2009 performance under the tent. Regarded as one of the most commercially and critically successful blues artist of his generation, Robert Cray has remained a dominant force for over forty years due to his soulful and creative guitar work, alongside uniquely blended elements of rock, soul, pop, and traditional rhythm and blues. A five-time Grammy winner, Cray has written and performed with everyone from Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan to Tina Turner and Chuck Berry, has made numerous appearances in TV and film, released 20 acclaimed studio albums and a bundle of live albums that punctuate the Blues Hall of Famers career. This episode features recordings from Cray's 2009 performance under the tent. Enjoyed this episode? See The Robert Cray Band live at Big Top this August! Tickets are on sale now at www.bigtop.org.
One of our favorite female singer songwriters, Nicki Bluhm will be releasing Avondale Drive in early June on Compass Records. This is, Nicki's second solo record, a follow up to her 2018 record To Rise You Gotta Fall. Nicki has been a mainstay in the jam band adjacent communities for years, and I've been a fan since her awesome van sessions that she did with her old band The Gramblers. Now this native Californian makes her home in Nashville, and Avondale Drive marks a new chapter in Bluhm's life. We sat down to talk about the new record, but first I admittedly gushed about her performance of the Grateful Dead's Sunrise with Phil Lesh and Bob Weir back at Lockin' 2017. First song: Love To Spare Second song: Friends (How To Do It) See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mike Farris - "Havana Santa," a 2021 single on Compass Records. This week, we are continuing a long-held tradition of featuring Christmas-themed songs selected by Brian Foss, host of KEXP's punk show Sonic Reducer. Brian has been doing a punk rock Christmas special every year since 2004 and has been a Christmas Day on-air DJ since 2012. He will be hosting his non-traditional Christmas broadcast from noon to 6pm on Saturday, December 25th and then will be back on air later that night for Punk Rock Xmess 2021 at 9pm. No standards are played, only original X-Mess songs, most with a humorous bent. Let's be honest, there's not a whole lot that's sexy about Santa Claus. But have you met his brother? Ow ow! Grammy Award winning gospel, blues, and roots artist Mike Farris introduces a new character to the holidays with “Havana Santa.” The heated Latin track swaps the snow for the sea, where we meet the rum-drinking, mambo-dancing, red Camino-driving brother of St. Nick that's living a very sultry life south of the border. Apparently, the inspiration to make a Latin-style Christmas song came after Farris and his 13-piece holiday band covered a Marc Anthony song during their annual “Soul of Christmas” show in Nashville one year and it was an absolute crowd-pleaser. Farris had this to say about the song: “The whole approach to writing “Havana Santa” was the same approach to the Soul of Christmas shows, and that is to bring maximum amounts of fun to the holiday season and to just fill the season with great memories and cheek numbing joy!” The track features a long list of long-time collaborators and includes six Grammy award winners among them: Derrek Phillips (drums), Dave Roe (bass), Kenny Greenberg (guitars), Kevin Mckendree (piano/hammond organ), Giovanni Rodriguez (percussion), Jim Hoke (tenor and baritone sax/accordion), Steve Hermann (trumpet), Yates Mckendree (bass), Saunya Clayborn (singer), Samson White (singer), additional singers are Dave Roe, Giovanni Rodriguez, Jamie-Sue Seal, Cassidy Zuver, Derrek Phillips and Kenny Greenberg. Get a taste of the fun that Farris and his collaborators bring to their Soul of Christmas events by watching a snippet of their performance of “Havana Santa” at this year's show at the link below. I didn't necessarily expect that a banjo player of such renown as Alison Brown (rhyme intended!) was also a Harvard educated MBA until she got side tracked by bluegrass music and Alison Krauss. It's a fascinating story, and as someone who left the "permanent and pensionable" job to pursue music, I'm always interested to talk to others who have opted for the impermanence of a music career over a "stable" job. Alison has of course used her business background to great effect creating Compass Records, and thus has a very unique insight into both sides of the music industrywww.alisonbrown.com

Born in Scotland but moving to Australia by the age of 14, Colin Hay grew up around a music shop owned and operated by his parents, who sold everything from pianos to LP’s. Finding worldwide success and a Grammy win in the early 80’s with Men At Work, Colin has penned some of the most endearing songs of that decade (“Down Under,” “Who Could It Be Now?,” “Overkill”) as well as unassuming yet emotionally resonant tracks since then, like “Waiting for My Real Life to Begin” and “I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You.” His charm has always lied in crafting bleakly beautiful melodies, blanketed by lyrics that somehow find comfort in isolation or discomfort in new surroundings. On June 4th, Compass Records will release a 20th anniversary vinyl pressing of Colin’s album Going Somewhere, and on today’s show, Colin discusses the process in revisiting that material, how moving from Scotland to Australia was like changing “from black-and-white into technicolor,” and how he became a member of Ringo Starr’s All-Starr Band. On this episode of Acoustic Music Talk, Brad Apple talks with amazing acoustic bassist, Missy Raines. GRAMMY® nominated Missy Raines was named 2020 International Bluegrass Music Association Bass Player of the Year, for the 9th time, more than any other bass player in the history of the organization. Missy Raines has proven herself without doubt as an iconic bluegrass instrumentalist. But with her newest release, Royal Traveller, Raines has stepped into the spotlight as a songwriter for the first time. The album digs deep into Raines' family life and her upbringing in West Virginia. Featuring previous and current members of her live band, as well as cameos from other bluegrass greats such as Stuart Duncan and Tim O'Brien, the album is a gorgeous look into the perspective, history, and musical influences of one of Nashville’s most beloved musicians, Missy Raines. Royal Traveller was nominated for a GRAMMY® for “Best Bluegrass Album” and is Raines' third album for Compass Records. It’s the first produced by Compass' owner and founder, and renowned banjo player Alison Brown. "I went into this project with Alison with the mindset that I wanted to stretch myself and see what I could do. I think we achieved what I was looking for, which is something further reaching and bigger than what I would have accomplished on my own," says Raines. In 1998, Raines became the first woman to win IBMA's Bass Player of the Year award and she went on to win the title repeatedly for the next several years. Royal Traveller highlights this particular piece of Raines' history with the stand out track “Swept Away”, which features the 5 first women to win IBMA instrumentalist awards, Raines, Brown, Sierra Hull, Becky Buller, and Molly Tuttle. “Swept Away” was named 2018 IBMA Recorded Event of the Year. Missy’s version of the iconic Flatt & Scruggs “Darlin Pal(s) of Mine” (from Royal Traveller), was named 2019 Instrumental Recording of the Year by the IBMA. The tune features Alison Brown on banjo, Todd Phillips on bass and Mike Bub on bass. In 2020, Missy shared IBMA’s Song of the Year award along with co-writers, Becky Buller and Alison Brown for “Chicago Barn Dance”, a song written specifically for the Chicago-based band, Special Concensus, and their latest album of the same name. With her new album, Raines tells her story with a vulnerability and bold honesty that rings clear, spoken through beautiful arrangements and well chosen musical collaborations. With nods to many of the varied and challenging chapters of her life, the songs speak volumes of Raines tenacity and musicianship, and her ability to rise to bluegrass fame despite the various confinements of the times. The listener is presented with a striking window into the up and down ride of a very royal traveller, the one and only Missy Raines. www.acousticmusictalk.net https://www.missyraines.com/ https://www.facebook.com/missyrainesmusic https://www.instagram.com/missyraines https://twitter.com/thenewhip https://www.youtube.com/missyrainesmusic --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/brad-apple/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/brad-apple/support

Laura Cortese is the bandleader and primary songwriter for Laura Cortese & The Dance Cards, a group of four musicians expanding the boundaries of what an indie-folk band can be. Laura Cortese & the Dance Cards take their extensive string music background, add their knowledge of folk and roots music, and incorporate an edgy pop sensibility to create their latest album, BITTER BETTER. A stunning lesson in all the ways string instruments can be played – bowed, plucked, percussively – the album showcases Cortese and multi-instrumentalist producer Sam Kassirer (Lula Wiles, Lake Street Dive) striving to capture the most adventurous approach to each moment. The result is an album that incorporates dance-worthy foundational grooves, synth, and loops to push the boundaries of the genre. BITTER BETTER was released on JULY 17 on Compass Records. RUEN BROTHERS were inspired by their music aficionado father who raised the duo on a steady diet of The Rolling Stones and The Everly Brothers, the two would rehearse in the family kitchen while scrounging for gigs in their blue-collar hometown of Scunthorpe, England. The brothers quickly collected a global audience of fans, none more influential than iconic producer Rick Rubin, who quickly recognized their talent and promptly took the brothers under his wing. The brothers' artistic background and pedigree come into full focus on their debut studio album ‘All My Shades of Blue'. KITTEL & CO. is a contemporary string collective fronted by violin virtuoso Jeremy Kittel (formerly of the GRAMMY award-winning Turtle Island Quartet). Kittle has worked such diverse artists as My Morning Jacket, Yo-Yo Ma & the Silk Road Ensemble, and Bela Fleck & Abigail Washburn but for the last few years, the Brooklyn-based artist has been diligently building his own repertoire of music for a wholly original new group. ‘Whorls' is the band's debut album on Compass Records and it inhabits the space between classical and acoustic roots, Celtic and bluegrass aesthetics, folk and jazz sensibilities. WoodSongs Kids: Ivey Station is a siblingfiddle duo from Cedar Bluff, Alabama made up of Jenalee and Elijah Roberts.

Swallowed By The New, on Compass Records, is the most intensely personal album of his career, reflecting his mastery for converting raw emotion into sound. Taking on lifes difficult transitions, Phillips delivers some of his most vulnerable songs yet. MIPSOis an acclaimed indie-Americana quartet from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Recently recognized by Rolling Stone as an Artist You Need to Know, the band ventures ever-further from its string-band pedigree to discover a broader Americana where classic folk-rock and modern alt-country sounds mingle easily with Appalachian tradition. Their fifth album, Edges Run, is lush and forward moving, with lyrics that sear and salve in turn..

JEAN RITCHIE is the songwriter many refer to as "The Mother of Folk" and the Princess of Appalachia. She was born in Viper, Kentucky, the youngest of 14 children. Ritchie grew up immersed in the traditional songs of the region and moved to New York in the 1940s where, as a social worker, she taught music to children. She launched the folk movement of the 1960's along with Pete Seeger, Oscar Brand, Woody Guthrie and Alan Lomax. Ritchie's songs have been recorded by a variety of artists including Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash and Judy Collins. Over the course of her career, her song collecting and song writing has helped to preserve the musical legacy of her Kentucky home, as well as expand awareness of its challenges through her continued support of the grassroots environmental organization Appalachian Voices and politically pointed songs such as "The L & N" and "Black Waters". Our friends at Compass Records have released a new multi-artist CD in honor of Jean, who now lives in Berea. THE REVEREND PEYTONS BIG DAMN BAND is comprised of fingerstyle guitarist Reverend Peyton, his wife and and distant cousin Aaron “Cuz Persinger on drums and bucket. They have only been around for a few years, in that time period these country-blues aficionados from rural Indiana have played more than 250 shows annually and logged more miles on their van than most acts who have been around for a decade. Their latest CD is “Wages on SideOneDummy Records.
