Are associations doing enough to take care of their chief staff executives? What happens to an organization when its leader is burned out?In this special episode of Associations Thrive, host Joanna Pineda sat down with Lindsay Currie, Adam Levy, and Tara Puckey, the association leaders behind the Sustaining Mental and Physical Health as a Chief Staff Exec survey. They discuss:Why they created a mental and physical health survey for association chief staff executives (CSEs).The stark gap between private conversations about leadership struggles and the public “everything is fine” narrative that chief staff execs face every day.How 85% of surveyed executives reported negative impacts on their health from their role, 60% reported sleep struggles, and nearly 25% reported depression. Why boards need to care about their chief executive's health and how organizations should recognize CSEs as critical investments. The importance of building a trusted CEO peer network early in a leadership journey.Ways to transform association culture to better support the mental health and physical wellbeing of leaders and staff. How leadership vulnerability and destigmatizing mental health conversations can actually strengthen an organization's culture.Practical ideas for safeguarding CEO wellness, from better vacation policies to board coaching and sabbatical programsReferences:Lindsay Currie, Executive Officer of The Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR)CUR WebsiteAdam Levy, Executive Director of The American Cleft Palate Craniofacial Association (ACPA)ACPA WebsiteTara Puckey, Executive Director of The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA)RTDNA WebsiteSilvia Quevedo, Executive Director of Lamaze InternationalLamaze WebsiteSustaining Mental and Physical Health as a Chief Staff Exec surveyMusic from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!):https://uppbeat.io/t/tobias-voigt/nexusLicense code: M2POPMBVFCE0RIPZ

In this episode, two CSEs, Adam Levy, CAE, of the American Cleft-Palate Association, and Silvia Quevedo, CAE, of Lamaze International, share the results of a study done among CSEs about sustaining their health on all levels. This important conversation needs to continue and with the leadership of the study authors: Adam, Silvia, Lindsay Currey, CAE, and Tara Puckey, CAE, our community can look forward to increasing support for all CSEs. With the recent visit  with a real-deal 1950 Broadcaster, I had the chance to experience the unique tonal options that Leo Fender's original blend control offered over your run-off-the-mill tone control. The only problem, was that awful #1 position, that put a suffocating blanket over the neck pickup. I started searching for a modified wiring scheme, and I found my episode from a couple of years ago with Rick Holmstrom, Mavis Staples' guitarist and bandleader. In it, he described his modified Broadcaster blend wiring that made the first position just a slightly lower volume, and slightly darkened neck pickup sound in position 1. I tried it, and loved it, and am sharing it with you now. I also share 2 YouTube Channels I have been enjoying, Adam Levy's, and Shane Theriot's.https://www.youtube.com/@AdamLevyGuitarhttps://www.youtube.com/user/TheRiotguitarInfo on the wiring:https://www.askzac.com/post/rick-holmstrom-mavis-staples-my-birthday-trip-to-new-orleans-ask-zac-162Follow me on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/askzac/To Support the Channel:Patreon  https://www.patreon.com/AskZacTip jar:  https://paypal.me/AskZacVenmo @AskZac Or check out my store for merch  - https://my-store-be0243.creator-spring.com/Support the show

Long ignored by scholarship, these interjections, as they're termed, are key to keeping conversations flowing. But that realization was recent, because much of early linguistics research was done with written text and not actual, live conversations. Three researchers with personal experience of anxiety and depression triggered by studying the environmental destruction caused by a changing climate describe the steps they take to protect their mental health.Ruth Cerezo-Mota, a climate scientist based at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City, found herself grieving for the state of the planet through her work for the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.Experiencing a panic attack at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by a fear of checking emails and a sense of disengagement from work, led to her seeking professional help. “I was in a really dark place,” she tells Adam Levy. Retreating to a “happy place” that combines home, books, yoga, running, cats and wine is a key copying strategy when things get tough, she says.Similar experiences are recounted by Dave Reay, a climate scientist at the University of Edinburgh UK, and Daniel Gilford, a meteorologist who works at Climate Central, a science-led non-profit based in Princeton, New Jersey, that researches and reports the facts about climate change and its effects on peoples lives.Talking to other climate researchers and focusing on positive developments around climate change also helps, says Reay. Gilford, who is based in Orlando, Florida, likens climate change to being in the path of an approaching train: “I can see it coming with all of its weight and heaviness, and I'm screaming ‘Stop. Stop the train. Stop the train.'“By screaming, by saying what is happening, by naming the problem and telling people about it, I think that that can become a solution as well,” he says. These included face-to-face mentoring, public engagement and conference travel. ”It really took a toll,” she says. ”There was none of the joy that I experienced previously. Adam Levy brings over 25 years of diverse legal experience to the bench, serving as one of three judges on Prime Video's Tribunal Justice, created by Judge Judy Sheindlin. Podcast Highlights: •    Levy talks about being part of a legal dynasty, including his mother, Judge Judy Sheindlin •    Levy discusses how the "rule of law" applied at home •    Levy shares the importance his mother's work ethic had on his professional development •    Levy shares a funny story of how his mother accepted a job on his behalf early in his career •    Levy shares his passionate views on the importance of truth and his disgust for those who blatantly lie •    As a young attorney, Levy would learn by reading transcripts of cases that  reflected the work of the best possible  lawyers, prosecutors and criminal defense lawyers  •    Levy discusses the instances where he and the other two Tribunal Justice judges disagree •    Levy shares his loathing for situations where various legal professionals don't play by the rules, especially when one of those involved seems more concerned about their own political aspirations •    Levy explains his views on the classification of public documents as well as conspiracy theorists and the value of critical thinking Having served two terms as Putnam County District Attorney in NY, Levy used his experience as a private practitioner to create pragmatic and impactful programs and initiatives to improve the fair and impartial administration of justice in the county where he lived, worked, and raised his family. This hands-on approach included extensive in-service training for all newly hired prosecutors and an open-door policy for his staff. Leading by example, Levy personally prosecuted a wide range of criminal cases, including sexual assaults, political corruption, and witness intimidation matters. Levy also dedicated time to training the next generation of lawyers as well. He was an instructor at The National Institute of Trial Advocacy and a long-time educator at The New York Prosecutors Training Institute. These trainings helped lead, guide, and mentor young prosecutors in cross-examination and trial strategy skills as they began their legal careers. Levy's expertise was built through a lifetime of legal service. As a 1992 Hofstra Law School graduate, Levy began his career as an ADA at the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office, where he prosecuted a wide range of violent and non-violent offenders with a practice focused on seeking justice for women and children who were the victim of physical and sexual assault—He then co-founded his legal partnership, Levy & Santoro, in Carmel, NY. He brought his trial experience from Suffolk County to the people of Putnam County, handling complex criminal and matrimonial matters in courts throughout New York State. Levy's no-nonsense approach to cases and reputation as a skilled trial attorney and advocate ultimately led to his election as District Attorney in Putnam County, where he lived with his family. His daughter, Sarah Rose, a newly admitted lawyer, is the law clerk on "Judy Justice," where his mother, judicial icon Judge Judy Sheindlin, presides. Levy and his wife Lori have two other children, Jacob and Emma, who are still in school. In his spare time, he enjoys skiing, scuba diving, white water rafting, and spending time with his family. Charlotte Roughton says she developed a deep-rooted shame and resentment towards her autism diagnosis, causing her to mask the condition during her biosciences degree at the University of Durham, UK.But socially camouflaging and striving to appear as neurotypical to others led to burnout and poor mental health, she tells Adam Levy. The COVID-19 pandemic, which straddled her Masters and PhD programmes, was a turning point. She cultivated a community via social media, becoming an advocate for neurodiversity in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).Being neurodivergent brings benefits to her role as a biological teaching technician at the University of Newcastle, UK, she says. She offers advice and how and when to disclose an autism diagnosis at work, based on her own experience, and how institutions and lab mates can support neurodivergent colleagues.Endocrinology researcher Michelle Kimple tells a similar story, recounting the relief she felt on receiving a bipolar and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnosis. She describes how this impacts her role as a faculty member in the department of medicine at the University of Wisconsin Madison. In 2024 Kimple wrote about her experiences in Nature, prompting other neurodiverse scientists to get in touch, and enabling her to mentor and support others. Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

Pedal steel guitarist Rich Hinman joins me on the show today. Rich is a really creative player who has definitely spent a great deal of time with the classic steel guitar cannon, but has very much branched out and developed his own style and voice on the instrument. He has a great flair for improvisation, and his tone and touch are really of the highest calibre. Rich is currently a teacher at Berklee College in Boston in the guitar Department, but continues his work in the studio and on the road. He has had recurring stints with artists like Sara Bareilles, Maren Morris, Molly Tuttle, KD Lang, Tanya Tucker, St. Vincent, Josh Ritter and many more. His current project is an amazing band with guitarist Adam Levy. The two of them go way back, and it shows, as their interplay and group improvisations are really incredible. The band is called Rich Hinman Vs Adam Levy and they have a brand new album out called “Fan Favorites” that you should check out. Rich also put out a solo album recently that is more on the ambient side, but full of inspired playing and compositions as well called “Memorial”. Rich is really active on social media which is how I first ran into his playing, and he also has a cool Patreon thing going on with weekly steel guitar lessons, so check out what he's up to over in his world at richhinman.com and if you get a chance to see him and Adam Levy, who are out on tour as we speak, don't miss them. In this episode Humpty Calderon speaks with Adam Levy, Producer of the Mint podcast and Co-founder of Bello Summary: The conversation covers topics such as podcasting, building an on-chain audience, the role of Bello as a no-code analytics platform, distribution and social insights, on-chain experiments and going viral, the integration of XMTP and social platforms, cross-chain challenges and solutions, participating in A16Z's Crypto Startup School, and the role of grants and accelerators. In this conversation, Adam Levy discusses his experience at A16Z's crypto startup school and the importance of building a supportive community. He also compares traditional education to the emerging education in the crypto space. Additionally, he shares insights on the power of networking in the crypto industry and the value of creating content. The conversation concludes with a discussion on Bello's public product launch and future plans.   Takeaways:   Building an on-chain audience is crucial for creators and businesses in the crypto space. Bello is a no-code analytics platform that helps users understand and engage with their on-chain audience. Distribution is a key challenge in Web3, and platforms like Farcaster and Lens are helping creators reach their audience. On-chain experiments, such as going viral and leveraging social insights, are emerging trends in the crypto space. Cross-chain interoperability is a challenge that needs to be addressed for the seamless transfer of data and value across different blockchains. Participating in accelerators like A16Z's Crypto Startup School can provide valuable mentorship, funding, and networking opportunities for early-stage projects. Grants play a crucial role in supporting developers and founders in the early stages of their projects. Building a supportive community is crucial for founders in the crypto industry. Traditional education may not always provide the necessary skills for success in crypto, but extracurricular activities and networking can be valuable. Networking in the crypto industry is often built through conferences, content creation, and providing value to others. Bello recently launched its public product and is focused on helping users better understand and engage with their on-chain audience.

On this week's Dipped In Tone, Rhett and Zack are joined by contemporary jazz guitar legend Adam Levy, the thoughtful, soft-spoken accompanist known for his work with Norah Jones and his own jazz trios. Levy's new book, String Theories, which he co-authored with fellow sideman-to-the-stars Ethan Sherman, collects a series of tips, challenges, and reflections for guitarists to deepen their playing.“I need it to sound like Solomon Burke is singing,” Levy says of his style and philosophy, centered on leads and mid-register tones. His formative playing experiences were on a Gibson ES-335, and Zack and Rhett wonder why the semi-hollow remains Levy's go-to over, say, a Les Paul or T-style guitar. “[We] kind of put guitars in buckets: ‘This guitar does this, this guitar does that,'” says Levy. “But a lot of it is just what you do with your hands anyway. I feel like the instrument itself is maybe just a third of all that stuff.”Levy says that as the years go on, he gets “more like myself” when playing. A piece of that, he says, is stepping back from guitar music altogether. “Go on a guitar fast for a month,” he says. Levy says that removing the distractions of analyzing for specific tones and gear can create a clearer relationship to music. “All you can really notice is, ‘What's the mood? How does it make me feel?'” Similarly, Levy warns of the dangers of overanalyzing your playing: “A little bit of reflection can go a long way,” he says, but “you don't want to get so reflective that you shut yourself down.”Finally, the trio dips a high-class vintage rig complete with a Gibson ES-125 with a floating wooden bridge—which shocks a sense-memory out of Levy. “It's beyond, ‘I can hear that guitar,'” laughs Levy. “I can smell that guitar.”Subscribe, like, and leave us a comment!Big thanks to Sweetwater for sponsoring this episode. Adam recounts stories of growing up in California and watching his grandfather, George Wyle, serve as a musician and music director on TV shows. He talks about his first Hollywood session, taking lessons from Ted Greene, working alongside Norah Jones (and writing his first song, ever, for her), playing with Tracy Chapman, working at Guitar Player (and how his guitar once ended up on the cover of GP), working on 'Spry,' the art of titling instrumental tracks, and so much more.
