The Mascot Theory has been kicking around Wisconsin weekend-warrior style for the past decade, but like many musicians, the great pandemic-induced entertainment halt of 2020 forced the band to reflect and refocus musical efforts. With the core foundation of singer/songwriter Erik Kjelland and the rhythm section of Nick Fry on bass guitar and Paul Metz on drums, The Mascot Theory used this time off to slightly shift their sound away from their acoustic-driven folk-rock music and into a more classic rock inspired Rock and Roll groove, especially thanks to the addition of lead guitarist Cory who brings a strong musical swagger and reverence to the guitar gods of the past. In April 2022, the band worked with famed producer Terry Manning (Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top, Shakira, Lenny Kravitz, Stax Record) at Sonic Ranch Studios near El Paso, TX and recorded 13 new songs as well as 2 updated versions of classic live show staple songs to record songs for the upcoming "Every Sign Of Life" album. Along with a WAMI (Wisconsin Area Music Industry) win for Best Male Vocalist (Erik Kjelland) and a nomination for Best Americana/folk artist, The Mascot Theory has won over 20 MAMA (Madison Area Music Association) awards including back-to-back 2016 and 2017 Artist of the Year awards.  They have played major festivals throughout Wisconsin including Summerfest, Freak Fest, and Mile of Music Festival, and have shared the stage with BoDeans, America, Don McLean, The Jayhawks, Vance Joy, Frank Turner, Chase Rice, Kaleo, The Wild Feathers, Guster, Blitzen Trapper, Cory Chisel, Andy Frasco and the UN, Miles Nielsen and the Rusted Hearts, American Aquarium, American Scarecrows, and Lillie Mae. The new music travels into its classic rock influences; harmonies that bring to mind the Eagles or Poco, a bit of that Rolling Stones guitar swagger, a little ZZ Top blues rock, a dash of the Pink Floyd mood, but never straying far from the core of the Tom Petty/Beatle-esque importance of solid melody and lyrics. Songs like "When I Drift Away", "Lavender Blues" and "Fast Car Getaway" showcase the new album's infectious energy and beautiful harmonies within an eclectic landscape of well-crafted and memorable songs.

WISCONSIN MUSIC PODCAST Amplifying Wisconsin Music Episode 092   Joey's Song raises the funds needed to support cutting-edge research and vital patient services in support of pediatric epilepsy and children with special needs.   HOW JOEY'S SONG RAISES FUNDS Because of Joey's love for music, our foundation uses music as our primary fundraising vehicle. Each year, we host a benefit concert that features multi-platinum recording artist and 3-time Grammy winner Butch Vig and his band, The Know-It-All Boyfriends (aka KIAB), who serve as a house band to a steady stream of musical stars. Our Joey's Song family of artists include: Brian Aubert (Silversun Pickups); Charlie Berens (The Manitowoc Minute); Peter Buck and Mike Mills (R.E.M.); Neko Case; Rosanne Cash; Miguel Cervantes (Hamilton); Cory Chisel; Chris Collingwood (Fountains Of Wayne); Ralph Covert (The Bad Examples); Cowboy Junkies; Crash Test Dummies; Marshall Crenshaw; Justin Currie (Del Amitri); Tanya Donelly and Gail Greenwood (Belly); Butch Vig and Duke Erikson (Garbage); Steve Forbert; Robbie Fulks; Laura Jane Grace (Against Me!); Jon Dee Graham (True Believers); Kay Hanley (Letters To Cleo); Joel Hodgson (Mystery Science Theater 3000); Kelly Hogan; Wally Ingram (Sheryl Crow); Jewel; Freedy Johnston; Sam Llanas (BoDeans); Gary Louris and Mark Olson (The Jayhawks); Jesse Malin; Patterson Hood (Drive-By Truckers); Scott McCaughey (Minus 5); Michael Mcdermott; Rhett Miller (Old 97s); Montgomery Gentry; Dan Navarro (Lowen & Navarro); Miles Nielsen; Rick Nielsen and Daxx Nielsen (Cheap Trick); Glen Phillips (Toad The Wet Sprocket); Dave Pirner (Soul Asylum); Linda Pitmon (Zuzu's Petals); Brian Ray (Paul Mccartney); Matthew Ryan; Trapper Schoepp; Jody Stephens (Big Star); Ken Stringfellow (The Posies); Aaron Tippin; Zach Williams (The Lone Bellow); and Steve Wynn (Dream Syndicate). Since Joey's death in 2010, we have produced 5 charity compilation CDs featuring rare and previously unreleased music from nationally known, award-winning musicians.   Our CDs are all available as digital downloads. Radio stations from Australia to the UK to South America to Japan to Sweden and everywhere in between have played our songs. CDs have been downloaded in over 25 countries worldwide.   Joey's Song was started in 2010 following the death of four-year-old Joey Gomoll, who passed one week shy of his fifth birthday. Joey suffered from a rare and debilitating form of epilepsy known as Dravet Syndrome. Dravet's caused persistent seizures which were never able to be controlled through medications leading to severe learning disabilities. While Dravet's robbed Joey of the ability to speak, Joey remained a happy and fun-loving child. He was happiest when music was playing, allowing him to hum, drum, and sing in his own way. To be present when music was playing meant only one thing, that Joey would soon have you dancing and enjoying the music with him.

Working Class Audio #156 with Justin Perkins!!! Justin Perkins has been recording music since his mid-teens. It all started  in his father’s basement then progressed to recording studios around the state of Wisconsin including the renowned Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin before relocating to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he now has his own mastering studio called Mystery Room Mastering. Justin's  clients include Tommy Stinson, The Replacements, The Figgs, The Gaslight Anthem, Daryl Stuermer, Screeching Weasel, The Mr. T Experience, The Smoking Popes, Limbeck, Miles Nielsen, and Tenement. Justin also recently mixed a new documentary about the legendary 90’s band Jawbreaker called “Don’t Break Down”. Outside of the studioJustin has  played bass in some of his own bands as well as with the newly reformed Bash & Pop, Tommy Stinson, Paul Collins Beat, Cory Chisel and a few others. About this Interview: Every time I post  about a new WCA show on Twitter there was always one guy who liked it, shared it or commented on it and that was Justin. Naturally I wanted to know who Justin Perkins was and why he was always liking the show so one day I visited his website Mystery Room Mastering and it was then I fully understood just how bad ass this guy was plus I was just blown away at the thorough nature of his website. Justin had reached out before to invite me to a Bash and Pop show  he was playing in San Francisco (I was unable to go) so I wasn't completely unaware of of his background but I had to talk to him! So after reaching out, scheduling and conducting my interview I had a whole new appreciation for Justin. We chat about his journey and his website and the usual WCA topics (clients, business, work/life balance, etc...).  -Enjoy! Matt

This week we also play a bunch of all-time classics for our pal Boyd, and anyone who loves great songs.

Cory Chisel grew up in Appleton, Wis., where he got into music while singing in church for his father, a Baptist minister. But while that period of his life helped him find his voice -- particularly in performances with his family -- Chisel remained isolated from popular culture at large. That changed when his uncle introduced him to classic rock and soul music, which in turn helped lead to Cory Chisel's recording career. Expect him to showcase material from last year's full- length major-label debut, 'Death Won't Send a Letter,' in this live performance from the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, R.I.
