In this episode, I share a powerful high-performance principle I learned from my friend Chris Pierce, the Sales Sport Psych.
Academy Award-nominated actress Amy Irving has announced her sophomore album, Always Will Be, featuring 10 electrifying renditions of songs from her longtime friend Willie Nelson's iconic catalog. The album includes contributions from Amy Helm, Louis Cato, Steve Earle, Chris Pierce, Lizzie No, and Willie himself, and is due out on April 25 via Queen of the Castle Records/Missing Piece Records. Amy Irving and Willie Nelson's decades long friendship began when the pair first met on the set of the 1980 film Honeysuckle Rose. After dueting on a reimagining of his song "I'm Waiting Forever" for her 2023 debut album, Nelson reached out to Irving with a proposition: Why not record another album, one comprised entirely of his own work? Irving took him up on the offer, and the result is an incredibly heartfelt album, one that is rooted in love and friendship. Over Irving's prolific career, she has been seen in Brian DePalma's Carrie and The Fury, stage performances of Romeo & Juliet with the Los Angeles Shakespeare Society and Broadway's Amadeus. Irving was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in Yentl, and has captivated audiences with beloved starring roles in films including Crossing Delancey, The Competition and Micki and Maude.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Every February, around this time, approximately 8 billion small heart-shaped candies are created and exchanged. These candies bear messages of love and care, and are often used as gifts to express feelings for another person. In each episode featuring a guest, we ask them if there are any words of wisdom they might share with their younger selves. These words of wisdom are like those Sweetheart treats, but instead of representing love for someone else, they are messages of love directed to our guests themselves, and by extension, to all of us. We are so inspired by the wisdom our guests shared, so we put all these beautiful words together, as a little love treat for our listeners. Enjoy! Thank you to our amazing guests for their words of wisdom: Donna Peek, Darren Gold, Leslie McGuirk, Mike Robbins, Susan Olesek, Laila Tarraf, Nichelle Trambell Spellman, Rachel Bitecofer, Bridgette Corridan, Mary Lin McBride, Ali Ingersoll, Cara Jones, David Richman, Chris Pierce, Chris Tsakalakis, Jill Santa Lucia, Forrest Wright, Aisha Ponds, Donna Rhode, Kristin Firpo, Marney Sullivan, Deborah Egerton, Rebekah Rotstein, Daryan Rahimzadeh, Kat Gordon, Kat Williford, Jeff Slater, Bryan Gillette, Oneika Mays, Vanessa Loder, Kerri Kelly, Seane Corn, Sarah McDonald, Mary Felice, Shelly Tygielski, Joe Walsh, Rebecca Ward, Nicole Swiner, Natalie Grumet, Marti Grimminck, Ava Lashay, Maureen Aarons, Josh Izenberg, Trish Hegarty, Kim Hunter, Ashleigh Parker, Chris Hendricks, Danny Rosin, Michelle Simmons, Katherine Kennedy, Tony Lillios

Flowing East and West: The Perfectly Imperfect Journey to a Fulfilled Life
When we asked Chris Pierce to join us on the podcast, we already knew he was an amazing musician. His music has been nominated for awards, he's been featured on NPR and the TV show This is Us; you only have to listen to him sing a few bars to really appreciate the depth of his craft. What we did not know, but will quickly be obvious when you're just a few minutes into the episode, is what an amazing human he is. Chris has not had a super easy life - among other things, he has been falsely accused and arrested, he has been beaten, he has witnessed a cross burning in his yard as a child, and perhaps most devastating to a budding musician, he lost his hearing at a young age (since partially corrected through surgery). And yet, his enduring belief is that challenging times lead us to something even more beautiful than we could have imagined, and staying open to vulnerability leads to growth. Chris believes love translates like nothing else; when confronted by an angry attendee at a recent concert, he responded in a calm, respectful way. When we both marveled at the way he handled the situation, Chris told us: love is the biggest weapon we have. It is also a verb: we love Chris Pierce. Listen in - we think you will love him too. CHRIS PIERCE gained national prominence with “We Can Always Come Back To This”. His hit co-write aired on 3 episodes of the #1 NBC primetime series ‘THIS IS US', then went on to peak at #1 on the Billboard Blues Chart, and #12 on iTunes Top 100. Pierce has done worldwide headlining tours and has performed on stage with: Seal, Cold War Kids, Al Green, Rodrigo y Gabriella, Jill Scott, Toots & the Maytals, Sara Bareilles, Buddy Guy, Keb'Mo', Blind Boys of Alabama, B.B. King, Aaron Neville and others. Pierce's 2020 collaboration in Americana duo WAR & PIERCE yielded the hit single “AMEN” which was featured on NPR's WORLD CAFE and aired on 200+ AAA / NonComm stations, then racked up 2M spins on Spotify. He also is part of a new project called LEON CREEK who will be releasing their first album in the fall of 2021. Chris Pierce recently performed at NPR's Mountain Stage which broadcast on 300 NPR Stations. His 2021 album, 'AMERICAN SILENCE' has garnered massive critical acclaim from NPR, SiriusXM, The Bluegrass Situation, NoDepression, Rolling Stone Country, AmericanaUK and more. www.chrispierce.com

Chris Pierce was raised by a white mother and a Black father, who impressed the importance of music in terms of finding peace and love within. While Chris was growing up, interracial marriage had only just become legal countrywide in 1967 and his family was not always accepted. At 5 years old, a burning cross was placed on his front yard and the way his parents calmly reacted to this horrible act left a profound impact on young Chris. He references that moment on his song “Sound All The Bells,” from his new record American Silence, and said “it forced an emotional intelligence in me as a young kid.” Chris openly discusses his incredible life story in our conversation, which also includes him speaking to his rare hearing disorder: Otosclerosis. He explains what hearing and playing music is like for someone with only 30% hearing in one ear. We also talk about his experience touring with mentors like B.B. King and Seal, his relationship with his wife, actor Tara Buck and his dog Seña.Of the songs on American Silence, Chris has said “It's important to not give up on reaching out to those who have stayed silent for too long about the issues that affect those around us all. Complacency is an addiction that plagues our society. If you smile and applaud for those different than you, be willing to fight for those folks too” and “what are you actually doing for people who don't look like you?” Listen to the music of Chris Peirce, a Black man who is telling us about his experience and reflections of his America. Murdered Black Americans' names like George Floyd, Adam Toledo and Daunte Wright are filling headlines and social media feeds. It's tragic and makes you feel helpless and the solutions are hard work. Fight that complacency in any way you can. Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Of the many tear-inducing moments on This Is Us, one of the most powerful comes on the 2017 "Memphis" episode under the song "We Can Always Come Back To This," used in a scene where the cancer-stricken William is comforted by his son. Chris Pierce co-wrote that song, drawing inspiration from the death of his father.Pierce has made a name for himself as a singer and songwriter who can pack a musical wallop, endearing himself to music supervisors who have used his tunes in True Blood, Rosewood, Soul Men, and many other movies and TV shows. In 2020, he lent his voice to the protest movement with the incisive track "It's Been Burning For A While," which became a viral hit when he performed it on a Playing For Change showcase. In this episode of the Songfacts Podcast, Pierce talks about overcoming both racism and deafness to find his voice. He also explains how he started getting movie and TV placements, and performs three of his songs, including a new one called "American Silence" and a stunning rendition of "It's Been Burning For A While."http://www.chrispierce.com/https://www.songfacts.com/https://www.facebook.com/songfactshttps://twitter.com/Songfactshttp://pantheonpodcasts.com/https://twitter.com/pantheonpodsHosted and Edited by Corey O'Flanaganhttps://twitter.com/ofe1818https://www.instagram.com/coreyofe/corey@songfacts.comSongfacts Podcast Spotify Playlisthttps://open.spotify.com/playlist/3IThMW5yB8XnFh5cS2gTxR?si=KAhiqWRcSIy5uxb2sZPFTAThis show is part of Pantheon Podcasts.

Pay attention to what's helping you and what's hindering you. Get a glimpse of what's helpful and what's not. What I mean by that is what are the thoughts going through your head? ( That most of the time we're unaware of) Like, “oh I sucked that heat” but there's a reason why. Some of it is physical, maybe you didn't sleep well last night. So maybe if you didn't sleep well last night then we need to help teach you different things so that you can sleep better the night before. Or maybe it was something in the moment like thinking “you got eight points, and I only had a five” their mind starts speeding up. There are a million different things that happen to people, but the first step for me was always just exploring that and recognizing that everyone's different… you can't come to an athlete and say “here's the answer”, you could get lucky and you might have the answer for that person but really, everyone is so different that you have to understand who they are and they have to understand who they are first. Understand yourself So many people want to change so fast and so it's hard to get them to slow down, because they just want to implement. But before implementing like you have to know the right strategy, people just tend to want the results and so they say “give me a strategy”, “give me a technique” and go try everything, but it's like throwing darts blindfolded doing it that way. Take a step back and just try to understand yourself a little bit better. For example there is a confusion between positive and negative, ... or helpful and unhelpful because for some people getting angry, a negative emotion is helpful in a competitive surfing situation, it might give them an adrenaline spike increase their energy and their style of surfing might match that. For somebody else that might be the most detrimental thing ever because maybe they're more flowy and smooth. So many people just want to bypass that step. And it's also the hardest. The hardest step is to look at yourself… people don't like looking in the mirror to see their flaws. it's just hard to do. “Who cares what people think?” Griff didn't care if he fell in front of you, he was the first one to laugh at himself when he did fall. and you say “living his best life”... living his best life did not mean being successful. It just meant doing what he wanted to do and not caring about what anybody else thought. I think Griff taught me a huge lesson of “Who cares?” Resources/Mentions: Heads-Up Baseball : Playing the Game One Pitch at a Time Ready and Resilient Guest Links: chrispiercesystems.com Instagram Youtube Podcast Links: Instagram: @Hopestrategy Facebook: @hopestrategy Twitter: @thehopestrategy Youtube The Hope Strategy
