EPISODE 132: A soulful and distinctive singer, talented keyboardist and songwriter, T Bear (Richard T Bear) made his mark as a solo artist and collaborator with many iconic artists—Crosby, Stills and Nash, The Blues Brothers, Richie Havens, Cher, Paul Shaffer, to name a few. In 1978, T Bear signed with RCA Records and released Red, Hot & Blue that featured Les Dudek, Billy Squier, and the Brecker Brothers. He has shared the stage with Richie Havens, Odetta, The Doobie Brothers and Jeff Beck. Domestic responsibilities and a struggle to regain his sobriety, which he did in 1983, forced him to put his music career on hold. He became instrumental in developing the Musicians Picnic, serving on its board of directors, which led to the creation of Musicians Assistance Program, now part of MusiCares Foundation. T Bear credits his late wife for encouraging his comeback. After a self-imposed hiatus from the music industry that lasted nearly three decades, T Bear, aka Richard T Bear, keyboardist, vocalist, songwriter, returns with a new album, Fresh Bear Tracks, released on Quarto Valley Records. A blend of blues, soul and rock with a who's who of special guests including Stephen Stills, Robby Krieger, Edgar Winter, Tom Scott, Walter Trout, Hutch Hutchinson, Laurence Juber, and more. Produced by Grammy Award winner Tony Braunagel, Fresh Bear Tracks was recorded at Robby Krieger's studio in Los Angeles. instagram.com/richard_tbearContact us: makingsoundpodcast.comFollow on Instagram: @makingsoundpodcastFollow on Threads: @jannkloseJoin our Facebook GroupPlease support the show with a donation, thank you for listening!
It's weird how many songs the Beatles have that aren't "hits" but are still universally loved. It seems everyone knows and loves "I've Just Seen A Face," despite never being a single and never appearing on the big compilations. Maybe it's just one that's found a way to sink its' teeth into anyone who's ever known the rush of new love. Maybe it's just one of those classic Paul melodies. Maybe it's the kind of country, kind of rock, kind of acoustic line it seems to walk so well. Maybe it's all of those. Either way, it's an absolute gem.Joining us this week is Jack Petruzelli, producer, songwriter, musician, and founding member of The Fab Faux, in addition to his work with folks like Rufus Wainwright, Joan Osborne, and more. He joins us to talk about what makes the Fab Faux work (they're probably the best Beatles tribute around, no wigs or costumes needed, just A-list players). We take a trip across previous rankings to question my sanity, while also discussing the upcoming Magical Mystery Camp (June 24-27), an all-inclusive, once-in-a-lifetime music vacation experience in the heart of the Catskills, exploring the music of The Beatles via performances, workshops, songwriting clinics and more! You can join the Fab Faux, Peter Asher, Joan Osborne, Laurence Juber and more, along with Beatle authors (and former RTB guests) Robert Rodriguez and Jerry Hammack, Ken Womack, and more in the Catskills for a Fab time! Laurence Juber Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson How life-affirming to be back Live with 2x Grammy Winner Laurence Juber. Laurence got us started with his Cobalt Blue. Loved it! What an extraordinary finger-playing guitarist. Gorgeous. We talked the LA fires, the Juber evacuation plan, fortunately not taken to fruition. Animals before guitars, his one-of-a-kind custom shop signature Martin, and a Les Paul were the two that made the cut. Laurence is doing what he can to help, performing at a series of gigs that will donate their proceeds, including Tuesday's big fundraiser at The Canyon Club. Laurence talked with great pride about his two daughters, both achieving big things in the biz. He also spoke with great love and reverence of his wife, Hope, to whom he's been married and a true partner in life and oft in art, for 42 years. It's clear that it's family first and creating for the Jubers. There's no sitting around eating bonbons and watching the tube for this high-functioning family. We talked about Laurence's early days and influences, clarinet his first instrument, finding guitar, and learning to read music in a day. He claims. everyone was doing it. His dream was to be a session player, and he quickly realized it in Abby Road Studios with the likes of George Martin. He gigged around with innumerable bands, quite happy to be doing so, until Denny Laine made that fateful connection. Auditioning with drummer Steve Holley, their lives both changed that day when Paul McCartney asked what they'd be doing for the next few years. A childhood fantasy realized, until a pot bust in Japan. Laurence spoke of his solo work, lots more session work, segueing to TV, which led him to some work with a guy named Snuffy, and ultimately to scoring and composing… writing two musicals with Hope, one, the ever popular, Gilligan's Island: The Musical. There was a Grammy with Sir Paul for Rockestra, the first instrumental Grammy, and his solo arrangement of The Pink Panther Theme earned him a second Grammy. Laurence has played on innumerable hits, some he's found out about years later reading about them. He's an amazing man with incredible talents. This was a much-needed soul-filling reminder of all that's good and right with the world during troubled and turbulent times. He took us out with guitar perfection. This intensely creative time in McCartney's life saw him writing and recording four studio albums with Wings (Venus and Mars, Wings at the Speed of Sound, London Town and Back to the Egg), the biggest selling British single of the 1970s, 'Mull of Kintyre,' and a solo album packed with electronic experimentalism, McCartney II. During a period of diverse musical evolution, McCartney melded his own melody-driven approach with in-vogue styles like disco, punk and new wave.Away from Wings, McCartney dabbled in music publishing, science fiction writing, semi-autobiographical filmmaking, animation, viral marketing, journalist boycotting, and smuggling cannabis past authority figures with mixed success. McGear, an album Paul co-wrote with his brother, Mike, tops a long list of lesser known projects and collaborations - some of which never saw the light of day - that kept McCartney busy between hit records. For the second half of this decade, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr remained ever present in McCartney's life. Collaborations were mooted, and multi-million dollar offers for one-off reunion concerts were plentiful, but the scars of the Beatles' bitter separation, and their complex, hard to untangle business ties complicated their private and public relationships.THE McCARTNEY LEGACY series is the first truly comprehensive biography, and the most finely detailed exploration of McCartney's creative life beyond the Beatles, ever undertaken. As well as thousands of never-before-seen documents, this volume is informed by hundreds of interviews, including exclusive, in-depth discussions with all four surviving members of Wings Mk. II and Mk. III - Geoff Britton, Joe English, Steve Holley and Laurence Juber - plus countless producers, musicians, recording engineers, designers, and touring staff who worked with McCartney between 1974-80.THE McCARTNEY LEGACY, VOLUME 2 is an in-depth exploration of McCartney's creative and personal life during a period that saw him composing constantly, and recording in Nashville, New Orleans and a boat moored off the Virgin Islands, as well as at Abbey Road in London, a 13th century British castle and his home studios in Scotland and Sussex.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.
Born in New York City and raised in the Caribbean as Richard Gerstein - Richard T. Bear boasts a career that spans more than 40 years, one that led to a string of acclaimed solo albums and collaborations with a number of influential icons, including Al Kooper, Stephen Stills, former Rascals Gene Cornish and Dino Danelli, Kiss, Pat Benatar and many more. He has shared stages with artists such as Dave Mason, Mick Fleetwood, the Doobie Brothers, Richie Havens and Odetta. T. Bear penned "Love and Pain," a track found on Take Me Home, one of Cher's most successful albums and also tallied several hits on his own, including the single "Sunshine Hotel" from his debut album Red, Hot and Blue. He has appeared on a number of recordings including CSN's Southern Cross, Billy Squier's Tale of the Tape and The Blues Brothers Soundtrack album. After taking some time to focus on his own sobriety, T. Bear became an early activist helping others with addiction. His self-imposed hiatus lasted nearly three decades, and now T Bear is back with two striking new releases, Fresh Bear Tracks and The Way of the World, his first studio albums in 25+ years. Richard is a distinctive singer and talented keyboard player. His latest albums feature a host of special guests. From Stephen Stills, Robby Krieger, Edgar Winter, Walter Trout, to former Paul McCartney & Wings members Laurence Juber and Denny Seiwell and The Heartbreakers' Benmont Tench. His latest album, The Way of The World, was written and recorded as the world emerged from the pandemic. It boasts a stunning set of 13 original songs. Musically, it's a stirring melodic mix of blues, rock n roll, Americana, and roots. T. Bear's first album spawned the single “Sunshine Hotel.” A remix of the song climbed to #4 on the world dance charts before becoming the dance staple that it remains today. Richard has appeared on numerous recordings by iconic artists including Crosby, Stills and Nash's Southern Cross, The Blues Brothers Soundtrack, Richie Havens Mixed Bag II, Kiss members Gene Simmons and Peter Criss' solo ventures, as well as Toby Beau's hit single My Angel Baby. As a soloist T Bear found his initial inspiration in the sounds of the British Invasion. At age 13 he was writing his own songs. An early break came when he was working at Manny's Music in New York City when Hot Tuna's Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady stopped in and hear him improvising on piano. They were impressed enough to ask him to sit in with them during a Hot Tuna show at the famed Fillmore East. He worked for a time as Carly Simon's road manager and opened shows for the likes of Jeff Beck and Richie Havens before moving to Los Angeles. In 1983, he took a lengthy hiatus from making music to get his personal life in order before returning to action in 2017. Fast forward to the present and T Bear is so excited about the new album. As he puts it, “Making The Way of the World was like getting a new pair of glasses. I see everything more clearly and in focus around me. These are songs that made me think and dream. It's an oasis for the mind.” Meet Richard T Bear this week as he unravels his incredible story of survival and comeback against all odds. I hope you really enjoy this episode.

This episode of Big Blend Radio features T Bear, a distinctive singer, talented keyboard player, and songwriter, who discusses his music, touring, and latest solo album "The Way of the World" that's out now through Quarto Valley Records. T Bear has made his mark as a solo performer and collaborator with many iconic artists — Crosby Stills and Nash, The Blues Brothers, Robby Krieger of The Doors, Edgar Winter, Billy Squier, Cher, as well as Gene Simmons and Peter Criss of Kiss, to name just a few, while also releasing several noteworthy solo albums over the years. Most recently he has been touring the world with acclaimed blues guitarist Walter Trout as a member of Walter's band. T Bear's album "The Way of The World," was written and recorded as the world emerged from the pandemic. Produced by long-time Grammy®-winning collaborators drummer Tony Braunagel (who has performed, toured, and recorded with a host of big names over the years including Bonnie Raitt, Buddy Guy, BB King and many many others) and former Wings guitarist Laurence Juber, the horn-driven excursions of his previous album, "Fresh Bear Tracks," were stripped-down to a small group sound, recorded mostly in home studio environments. Augmenting this core trio was a selection of bass players, including the legendary Reggie McBride, Hutch Hutchinson (Bonnie Raitt) and John Mayall-alumnus Ricky Cortez. The Way of The World boasts a stunning set of twelve original songs, written and/or co-written by T Bear. Musically, the album is a stirring and infectious melodic mix of blues, rock n roll, Americana, and roots music accented by some occasional touches of tasty soul, jazz, Latin, and funk textures. Bob Wilson and Don Jeffries new book From Abbey Road to Strawberry Fields: A Billy Shears Story revisits the "Paul is Dead" controversy of the late 1960s, looking back through the eyes of those who know Paul best: his hairstylist (and only your hairstylist knows for sure!) Leslie Cavendish, band mate Laurence Juber, and 1964 traveling companion on the North American Tour, Ivor Davis! They all chime in on this controversial topic. Furthermore, the viewpoints of noted Beatles authors such as Bruce Spizer, Jim Berkenstadt, Kit O'Toole, Charles Rosenay, Terry Crain, and Jude Southerland Kessler are expressed as well as the opinions of other famous entertainers. Most importantly, Fred LaBour, who says he started the entire "Paul is Dead" storyline, speaks frankly about his role. This entertaining and informative book examines one of the most curious parts of Beatlemania. Come along for a magical mystery tour through this debate that has raged for 60 years!
"You know that old trees just grow stronger,And old rivers grow wilder every day.Old people just grow lonesomeWaiting for someone to say, "Hello in there, hello."Please say Hello and join me on this week's Red Eye Edition of Whole 'Nuther Thing". At the end of what was probably the busiest year they'd ever have, the Beatles needed a single for the Christmas market in 1964. They needed to churn it out while also wrapping up work on their 4th album. John picked up a riff from a Bobby Parker song and wrote what he thought was "a lousy song" around it, but nevertheless, brought it to the band. Thankfully, his fellow Beatles all had deep bags of tricks to pull from. Ringo added a latin groove straight out of "Tequila," George added a Chet Atkins-infused solo, Paul keeps it tidy with a grooving bass part and great harmonies. And a little bit of musical voodoo gets sprinkled on top when the band stumbled upon the magic of feedback, which they then tack on to the beginning of the track. All of the sudden, this "lousy song" is their 6th consecutive #1 that year, stayed in their live set for the next 2 years, and goes on to be the 56th best selling single of all time in the UK. Not bad for a little song called "I Feel Fine." The Beatles magic of turning a song into something stronger than the sum of its' parts is on display here, as there's not too much weight to the song, but boy is it a cool song. Speaking of cool, how cool is this? Joining us on the show this week is guitarist, composer, and former Wings member Laurence Juber! The London-born virtuoso joined us for a lovely chat back in June (which is why some of the upcoming things he mentions have already happened), in which we discuss his Teatime with LJ livestreams on Facebook, the upcoming Brady Bunch musical he's been working on, his journey with Wings, an absolutely lovely moment with George Harrison, and much, much more! Be sure to follow Laurence on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/LaurenceJuberGuitar and you can check out all of his music and keep an eye on dates on his website at https://laurencejuber.com/. Join "She Said She Said" co-hosts, Recipe Records author Lanea Stagg and The John Lennon Series author Jude Southerland Kessler as they welcome noted author Don Jeffries to the show. Don and his talented co-author Bob Wilson have just released a brand new book on the "Paul is Dead" controversy. Entitled From Strawberry Fields to Abbey Road: A Billy Shears Story, this new and refreshing look at the story that intrigued Beatles fans in the late 1960s is explored from the eyes of Beatles experts, former band members, and friends. As Don explains, the book houses opinions on the topic from Ivor Davis who toured with The Beatles in 1964 and 1965, Laurence Juber of Wings, Beatles music expert Bruce Spizer, and notables such as Tony Peck, Gregory Peck's son. Don gives an excellent overview of a very interesting book that shines a new light on the controversy that has raged for over 50 years.

Summary Episode 25: Jon Gomm is a singer songwriter considered to be one of the world's true virtuoso guitarists possessing a unique style most elite musicians consider revolutionary. Jon was born and continues to live in the North of England. His songs are driven by his use of one acoustic guitar to create drum sounds, basslines and twisting melodies all at the same time with no external effects. The emphasis remains on his soulful vocals and songwriting with his original material influenced by everything from Robert Johnson to Radiohead. His live shows combine deeply personal performances allied with a natural wit, with a once seen, never forgotten two-handed guitar style, both physical and complex, producing sounds people can barely believe are coming from a humble acoustic guitar. https://vimeo.com/678255603 (Timestamps are for audio version of the podcast.) 00:25 Introducing Jon Gomm 04:07 Jon recalls the gig with Adam 05:18 Graceland by Paul Simon - one of Jon's earliest music inspirations 07:00 The Jeff Beck Influence 07:25 John describes his early frustration with electric 19:09 Jon talks about playing covers 20:51 Jon talks about the current pop music paradigm & asks should one compose? 25:34 Musical Segment: Jon plays his own composition "Passionflower" 32:20 Jon talks about his approach with unconventional tunings, techniques and percussion 33:34 His excitement with novel techniques - slide, flamenco percussion 34:13 Jon talks about the "Bukka White" style 34:57 Jon talks about playing electric guitar in bands at 13 35:29 Jon discovers Laurence Juber and Michael 41:31 Jon talks about gigging as a working country, metal and jazz player 43:34 How Jon is currently connecting with music emotionally 46:24 His new album which he describes as "quite emotionally intense" 52:59 Jon talks about doing music arrangements 1:02:46 Jon's best advice for every guitar player! 1:08:24 Jon's "last words" for the interview 1:08:45 Ending credits & podcast contact info Jon's Links Jon's Website Jon's Youtube Jon's Facebook Jon's Instagram Jon's Twitter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nY7GnAq6Znw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcmecyoZgjo Never Miss an Episode - Subscribe NOW!

This week Mike and Jeremy welcome guitarist extraordinaire, songwriter, and former member of Paul McCartney and Wings Laurence Juber.
Guitar players, you're in for a special treat! I first met Grammy Winning guitarist, arranger & composer LAURENCE JUBER in 1975. He was a top London studio even then and we did sessions, jingles and TV shows together over the years. Over the years he's published many guitar books, played in James Bond movies and rocked around the world as a member of Paul McCartney's Wings. He can play literally anything on his instrument - classical lute to country blues to groovy jazz. But here, I ask Laurence to show how he developed his unique, award-winning concept of the acoustic guitar, playing in different tunings and creating brilliant new sounds and arrangements. How did he come up with the idea and how exactly does he do it? A masterclass from a true master. Watch! Listen! Take notes! And you may watch the video version HERE
