Safeguarding Specialist Alison Neumann shares about the three basic principles of safeguarding - visibility, accountability, and power balance - and how those translate into the online setting. Click here for the article by Alison Neumann Episode 22: Third Culture KIds “Safeguarding is a term to denote measures to protect the health, wellbeing, and human rights of individuals, especially children and vulnerable adults, to live free from abuse. It's about people and organizations working together to prevent and reduce the risks, occurrences, and impact of harm.” “The three principles that we recommend in terms of interacting with children or vulnerable adults are VAP: Visibility, accountability, and power balance.” “Ask yourself: Is it possible for others to see me? Do others know where I am and what I'm  doing? Am I building a culture of transparency and accountability? Do children feel safe in my presence? Does my demeanor or posture put them at ease?” “Just because [a safeguarding incident] happen[s] online and not in person doesn't mean that you shouldn't address those things.” “If you hear someone saying, ‘That looked a little weird,' or ‘Are you sure that was okay?' or something like that, [be] open to those kinds of conversations and not immediately being defensive, even if it was unintentional.” “There's a lot of wisdom in communicating with others and getting advice from others and learning from people who have been working with children for a longer time than you have.” “We want to be promoting wisdom and not fear.” “Listen well. I know that seems really simple, but especially if it is a weighty concern, that can be really hard to do.” “Reacting poorly to a raised concern can actually cause more trauma to the child than the harm itself because they will feel belittled and not listened to.” “It's important to be able to take care of yourself [...] Bringing that to God and lamenting over it, but then letting Him carry that burden, is hugely important, otherwise you'll be weighed down by it consistently.” Reach the TeachBeyond Safeguarding Team at safeguarding@teachbeyond.org Episode 44: Culture and the Gospel Join us on Thursday, November 18, for TeachBeyond's Day of Giving! Thu. 1 pm EDT – This week on Courageous Conversations with Sheree, it’s another double hitter with Two Time Indie Music Channel Awards Winner and Savannah native Willie Jackson!!! Like Blues, Country and Gospel? Join us and listen LIVE! Willie Jackson is a native son of Savannah, GA; 10/24/2019 Willie Jackson is a native son of Savannah, GA; the youngest of the 6 children born to the late, great Reverend Jackson and, his wife, Annie Pearl originally from Millen Georgia. Willie’s early years in church had him well-acquainted with music as vital to the human experience; he often found himself playing drums, singing in choirs, raising hymns and providing whatever music was necessary – whether or not he had the training! Willie has always been a songwriter in his free time while working to support his family. A tragic accident in 2009 ended his previous career and left him differently abled. Willie found himself with an above-the-knee amputation, and though he had spent his life until that point as an active athletic man, he saw this life-changing event as an opportunity to reinvent himself rather than sit out on life. He began to write in earnest and started learning bass guitar. Willie’s original music combines his clever lyrics with rhythms of South Georgia’straditional soul stirring blues. He can be heard at various venues in the Coastal Empire; sometimes with a three-piece group while other times he has 4 or 5 musicians accompany his powerful blues vocals. He has entertained on the stage at the beautifully refurbished Tybee Post Theater, was a featured artist at the 2019 Piccolo Spoleto Festival as well as at the 22nd Carolina Downhome Blues Festival and opened for Mac Arnold, former bass player for the legendary Muddy Waters and accomplished blues musician in his own right, at the Stage on Bay. Willie is currently in the studio working on a full-length CD of original blues music. His original “I’m Your Landlord” won him two awards at the 2019 Indie Music ChannelAwards (@ Clive Davis Arena at the Grammy Museum in L.A.) for both Best Blues Song and Best Blues Song Writer! This award-winning song, which humorously narrates the behaviors of a shady landlord, exemplifies rocking traditional blues sounds and will be included on his new CD expected to be released soon. Currently, he has an EP available featuring six original songs which pair elements of traditional blues with musings on contemporary life and living. Willie enjoys performing live every bit as much as the audiences enjoy his outstanding vocals sometimes used for on-the-spot improvisational song writing, and his jocular MC engagement between songs. He has a knack for ensuring people have a good time and creating an intimate, familiar feeling amidst a venue of strangers. Live performances treat listeners to covers of some of the greats like Muddy Waters, BB King, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Clapton along with Willie’s latest original songs. Willie is a prolific songwriter, wordsmithing songs across genres – blues, country and gospel. He looks forward to future opportunities.

With the advent of home and garden TV shows, Internet feeds, and social media floods, it has become normal for us to focus on how things look. But we forget, that is not what this life is about. Recently I posted this on my facebook page: What if you lived in a place where no one cared what you wore- they didn’t even see it. You just wore what was comfortable. It could be the same thing day after day and it wouldn’t matter. You were clothed. And they just saw YOU. What if you lived in a place where folks came over to each other’s homes just for the sake of visiting or helping or loving. It didn’t matter if you served the richest of meals or crackers and water. Those were just additions to a visit. Not the purpose. What if you lived in a place where your home was simply a shelter. A place to rest your head, enjoy company, and to sleep soundly. But how it looked was never an issue. It was simply your dwelling place. What if you lived in a place where no one compared. No one envied. Each was working for the good of the others. What if you lived in a place where the center of your life was truly the Gospel. Without all of the other things distracting you, and daily life consisted of being steeped in God’s Word and then living it out. Why do we spend so much time on the details? Why do we add the Gospel to our lives instead of living our lives from the Gospel? Join me today as we talk about living simply in this world that focuses on the temporal while we have the eternal! https://wp.me/p7OB5f-1ek **Please note: at one point I mention a verse in Romans. I should have said Romans 12 and not 2. (I meant Romans 12:2 and spoke too fast ;) )
