Daily Dose of Hope August 13, 2025 Scripture – Luke 7:1-35 Prayer: Almighty Father, Thank you that your mercies are new every morning. Thank you, that no matter what this week has held, we can come to you and start over. We are grateful for your forgiveness. We are so very grateful for your care and your love. Help us, Lord, to set aside our distractions, to set aside our scattered thoughts and focus on you right now. In these next few moments of silence, Lord, hear our prayers... In Your Name, Amen. Welcome back to the Daily Dose of Hope, a deep dive into the Gospels and Acts. Today, we start Luke 7. At the beginning of this chapter, we meet the Roman centurion. This is such a great text! One of the most interesting components of this story is that the centurion came up to Jesus at all. He would have been part of the Roman occupying force in Judea and Galilee. It's fascinating that he is presented in such a positive way and that he responds so favorably to Jesus and his message. It's interesting that this Roman soldier cares so deeply for his slave. Roman centurions weren't known for their compassion. But he went to great lengths to reach Jesus and ask for his help. In fact, this Roman centurion sends Jewish elders to speak on his behalf to Jesus to prove that he has been a patron of the Jewish people. When most of us approach this passage, our biggest takeaway is the faith of this man. And it's impressive. He tells Jesus that he understands authority and chain of command because of his military experience. He knows that Jesus has authority enough to heal from afar. That is pretty incredible. The Jews don't understand Jesus' authority but this Roman soldier does. Jesus responds in amazement at the man's faith and heals the slave. Jesus is surprised to find such faith in a Roman centurion, faith that far exceeds what he has seen from others in Israel. It's interesting that Jesus himself is surprised that an enemy soldier could be a model for faith for the people of God. I think this points to how we shouldn't be surprised that faith can show up in the most unlikely of people and places. The next part of today's reading always moves me. There is a woman from Nain whose son has died. Unlike the Roman soldier, she doesn't seek out Jesus. She may not have known Jesus at all. She was most likely consumed with grieving for her only son. Thoughts of the Messiah and his healing were probably not in her thoughts at all. Just all-consuming grief. But Jesus has compassion on her. He initiates raising her boy from the dead. And this shows his power over death. He isn't just a great teacher, prophet, and healer. He is the Son of God. Jesus addresses the boy's corpse with a sentence and the boy sits up and begins talking. A miracle like no other occurs and a mama has her boy back. I love this. The last portion of today's reading was Jesus being asked about John the Baptist. John sends messengers to ask Jesus – Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else? Based on his answer, Jesus is the one and he gives all kinds of reasons why – the blind see, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cleansed, the dead rise, and so forth. Jesus is already doing the things that the Messiah will do and they are beginning to see signs of heaven on earth. Well, if Jesus is Messiah, then who is John? That is what Jesus addresses to the crowd. By saying that Jesus is the one, that means that John the Baptist is not the one. Jesus points out that John is truly a great man and a great prophet. He preached repentance of sin and is the one prophesied to pave the way for the Messiah. Why did so many people go into the wilderness to be baptized by him? They were yearning for something he had. John was offering them something they desperately needed – forgiveness and cleansing. And now Jesus is offering them a different kind of Good News. More tomorrow. Blessings, Pastor Vicki
Being denied by a friend is gut-wrenching, but imagine how often people deny Jesus. We live in a world where identifying or being associated with Jesus comes with a cost. But we all have a decision to make: Will I be willing to count the cost, or will I deny Jesus? Ryan walked us through 3 main questions to consider in our walk with Jesus: Are you willing to be identified with Jesus? Is Jesus focusing on you in the way He focused on Peter? Is your story mainly defined by your failures?Peter was a strong believer in Jesus; he was willing to fight for Jesus' life and told Him he would die for Him. But there was a moment, this moment when Peter had to decide if he was simply a believer or a follower of Jesus. A follower's life is marked with obedience and faith, meaning things won't be easy or comfortable, but it will be worth it. Jesus knew Peter's personality when he told him, "Come follow me", and He knew Peter would deny Him. Nonetheless, God had an incredible plan for Peter's life after this moment of denial. No matter where you are, what your failures are, or what you struggle with now, Jesus still says, "Come follow me, " just like He did for Peter.
Luke 7:18-23 Location: Bountiful, Utah Join Us for Worship: Sundays at 9:00 AM & 11:00 AM https://www.flourishinggrace.org/plan-your-visit Are we holding false expectations of God? In this powerful sermon from Luke 7, Chason Robbins challenges us to let go of our expectations so that God can raise our expectancy. Drawing from John the Baptist's question to Jesus—“Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”—Chason unpacks how our preconceived notions about faith, suffering, and success can actually hinder our trust in God. This message explores how following Jesus doesn't always mean life will be easy or that we will receive worldly success. Instead, Jesus invites us to trust in his unexpected ways, showing that his kingdom operates differently than we often assume. Through healing, restoration, and gospel transformation, we see that God calls us to let go of control and trust in his perfect plan. Key themes in this sermon include: • The dangers of false expectations in faith • How suffering can shake and strengthen our faith • John the Baptist's doubts about Jesus as the Messiah • Jesus' response: healing, transformation, and a higher calling • Why following Jesus doesn't guarantee an easy life • The contrast between worldly expectations and kingdom reality • Letting go of self-made ideas about who God is • Trusting in God's unexpected ways Scripture focus: • Luke 7:18-23 – John the Baptist questions Jesus • Job 21:7 – Wrestling with the prosperity of the wicked • Isaiah 29:18 and 35:5-6 – Prophecies of healing and restoration • 1 Corinthians 1:27 – God's upside-down wisdom • Galatians 5:22-23 – The fruit of the Spirit vs. worldly success Who is this sermon for? • Christians struggling with unanswered prayers • Those wondering why following Jesus doesn't always bring worldly success • Anyone experiencing doubt or disappointment in faith • Church leaders, pastors, and small group members seeking deeper discussion • New believers learning to trust God beyond expectations Watch to the end for these takeaways: • How to shift from expectation to expectancy • Why faith isn't about getting what we want, but trusting in what God is doing • How Jesus invites us to a greater understanding of his kingdom • How suffering reveals where our trust in God truly lies • Why Jesus calls us to be part of his unexpected and radical mission If this message encouraged you, be sure to subscribe for more biblical teaching from Flourishing Grace Church. "In the real world, that stuff [that Jesus said] doesn't work."This was said to me by a pastor friend as we discussed the importance of following the Way of Jesus as he laid it out. Our disagreement was about how we are to respond to those who are or may be trying to harm us.That friend is no longer a pastor, which I think is probably for the best, because if a representative of Jesus doesn't believe the teaching and example of Jesus matters in "the real world" then they aren't representing Jesus, are they? I believe that the things of Jesus ARE the real world and his instructions often lead us to take positions which don't match our culture.Like when he said that if we want to be identified as God's people, we need to make peace in all things...
Jesus raises us from the coffin of our sin to new life in Him I Have Not Found Such Great Faith Jesus is in Capernaum A highly valued slave was sick and nearing death He was the slave of a Roman officer The officer heard about Jesus, and he sent some Jewish leaders to ask him to come and heal his slave They earnestly begged Jesus to come with them and help the man who felt that he deserved the help bc of his love for the Jews and he built them a synagogue He was uncertain if Jesus was going to grant a Gentile request. Jesus is for everyone Jesus went with them Right before they get to the house the officer sends word to Jesus that he should not trouble himself by coming to his house because he feels unworthy for Jesus to enter his house so he said Just say the word from where you are and my servant will be healed He explains that he is a man under authority and he has authority and he only needs to say Go and his servants go and come and they come do and they do. He was humble Jesus was amazed and he turned to the crowd and said I tell you, (the crowd) I haven't seen faith like this in all the land of Israel that gentile understood his authority and not his own chosen people When the officers who were sent went back to the house they found the slave completely healed What does your faith look like right now in the eyes of Jesus? Get Up Jesus went village with his disciples with a great crowd following A funeral procession was coming out as he approached the village The boy who died was the only son of a widow she would have no hope and no support The Lord saw her and was overflowed with compassion Don't cry Jesus walked to the coffin touched it and the bearers stopped Young man, Get up The dead boy sat up, began to talk Jesus gave him back to his mother this was the first time he raised someone from the dead Great awe and praise We have seen the hand of God at work today The news spread all over Judea and surrounding areas Jesus is saying to the woman and us don't cry get up I can handle rather it is what you are dealing with hurt, pain, and grief. He has compassion on us just this women We see salvation in this we were dead in the coffin of sin like this boy and Jesus loved you and had compassion on you while you were still sinners and he called you to get up and be raised from death to life. Should We Expect Someone Else John's disciples told him about everything Jesus was doing John sent two of them to ask Jesus Are you the Messiah we are expecting or should we expect someone else? At that very time, he cured many people of their various diseases, cast out evil spirits, and restored sight to the blind They were expecting a Messiah and asking should expect someone else. Who are you expecting him to deal with life in the world as we have seen that is going crazy the only hope you have is to put your trust in Jesus and surrender your life to him John needed reassurance and so do we when we are suffering and it's about to take our doubts and questions to God we just don't stay there God Blessed those who are not offended by me Jesus tells them to Go back and report to John What you seen What you heard The blind see The lame walk The Lepers are cured The deaf hear The dead are raised to life The Good News is being preached to the poor God blessed those who are not offended by me They said a mighty prophet has risen among us when it was God himself in the flesh in the form of Jesus The Chew: To Have Faith in the authority of Jesus to get us up when and down to raise us from the dead place of sin. We are to expect Him alone, He is the one who blesses us. For more about Gloribites https://linktr.ee/Gloribites
In John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, two friends, Christian and Hopeful, deviate from the True Way to explore By-Path Meadow because it looks like an easier route. They think it will lead them to the same destination, but they lose their way and spend a night at Doubting Castle owned by the Giant called Despair. Doubt is a common experience in the Christian life. It can be caused by many things—convincing arguments, scornful comments, painful experiences. As with Christian and Hopeful, doubt can be a result of getting distracted and losing our way. In Matthew 11:3, John the Baptist expressed his doubt regarding Jesus' identity, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” John's question may surprise us. After all, John was Jesus' cousin, His chosen forerunner, His prophet in the wilderness. But when John spoke truth to Herod Antipas and condemned his marriage to Herodias, Herod imprisoned him (see Mark 6:14–29). During his imprisonment, John was unable to observe Jesus directly, and that lack of firsthand evidence seems to have planted a seed of doubt. Thankfully, instead of withdrawing into confusion and depression, he took his questions to Jesus. He sent one of his disciples to ask Jesus: “Are you the one?” (v. 3). Jesus responded gently and offered His miracles as proof that He was the Messiah. Then Jesus vouched for John before the crowd and condemned the people's unbelief. Those who had seen Him firsthand, and yet rejected Him, were condemned (vv. 20 24). There are two ways to respond when we struggle with doubt. We might be tempted to look for problems and reasons to abandon the faith. But when we love God, we seek the truth and reasons to trust.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

JESUS PROMISES HIS KINGDOM TO THE REPENTANT THIEF – Jesus Walking in the Way of the Cross (VIDEO LYRICS TO MUSIC: There next to him two unrighteous men Who'd wasted their lives on taste for their sins One spoke with no worry through his dying breaths With mocking he cried out to Jesus ‘Are you not the Christ are you not the king Are you not the man that you claim to be Climb down from this tree kill the men at your feet And save yourself' The other said ‘Have you no fear this is God whom you speak The one of us three who hangs underserving For our sins paint us black by our sins we were cast Can't you see this man is white as driven snow ‘Lord remember me When you come into your kingdom'… ‘Truly I tell you this very day You will be with me in my holy place In paradise in paradise forever' MESSAGE SUMMARY: In 1854, Frederick William Faber wrote a poem entitled ‘Souls of Men, Why Will Ye Scatter?' It was soon after fit with a tune, and sung as a congregational hymn both under its original name and the now more common title, ‘There's A Wideness in God's Mercy.' Though it is difficult to differentiate between Faber's original work and later additions, some versions contain up to thirteen stanzas. But the message of each is the same: how vast and great and wide is God's love and mercy. Three of those thirteen stanzas follow: There's a wideness in God's mercy, Like the wideness of the sea; There's a kindness in his justice, Which is more than liberty. There is welcome for the sinner, And more graces for the good; There is mercy with the Saviour, There is healing in his blood. Pining souls, come nearer Jesus, And O come not doubting thus; But with faith that trusts more bravely, His great tenderness for us. We see this immense wideness in God's mercy as Jesus hangs on the cross between two thieves. These two men, who admit their own guilt (Luke 23:41), call out to Jesus in very different ways. One gives him recognition as the Christ, the other as King. The same titles given as formal charges against Jesus in his trial before Pilate and the Jews. The first criminal cries out for his own life and freedom, and asks Jesus to save them all. But the second criminal rebukes the first. The second criminal knows that Jesus has done nothing wrong. It is as though he somehow comprehends the power and glory of this particular King, despite the group's present circumstances. This criminal most certainly understands that his punishment is deserved. Simultaneously, he knows that Jesus holds the verdict concerning his everlasting sentence. It is from this place that the man asks subtly for something he may not have fully understood in that moment. He makes one simple request, “…remember me…” And Jesus' answer must have been ever-sweet to his ears. “In truth I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” (v.43). How deep and wide and vast is God's mercy! How overwhelming is his grace! This man, this thief, did nothing to deserve paradise. In fact, at his own confession, his brutal and cruel sentence of crucifixion was justified. Yet Jesus delivers him reprieve like no other. He welcomes the criminal into everlasting glory at his word. History has routinely called this man the ‘Good Thief,' though in truth he did nothing ‘good' at all. However, he understood the person of the man next to him. He knew that Jesus was Christ and King, and in doing so, was allowed to taste the sweetness of God's mercy that is offered to all. In that moment, this criminal was freed from his cross, because Christ's mercy is wider than the sea. He is freed because Jesus' kindness carries freedom, and in his blood there is full restoration. There on the cross this thief became a powerful example of Faber's words. That we could simply ‘trust more bravely his great tenderness for us.' Written by Jesse Braswell Roberts / Poor Bishop Hooper golgothamusic.com // poorbishophooper.com // Second edition ©2022 Jesse Braswell Roberts / Poor Bishop Hooper. TODAY'S PRAYER: The faith of this criminal reminds us that there is nothing we bring to salvation. It is truly a gift. Meditate on this fact. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, Because of who I am in Jesus Christ, I will not be driven by Fear. Rather, I will abide in the Lord's Faithfulness. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5). SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Luke 23:39-43: “One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: ‘Aren't you the Messiah Save yourself and us!'. But the other criminal rebuked him. ‘Don't you fear God,' he said, ‘since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.' Then he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.' Jesus answered him, ‘Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.'.” Further Reading: : Matthew 27:38-44; Revelation 2:7. A WORD FROM THE LORD WEBSITE: www.AWFTL.org. John the Baptist was, according to Jesus, the greatest man who had been born. But even as the greatest, John had doubts about Jesus. Did you hear what I just said? John had doubts. John had questions. John went through a period of soul searching. John asks Jesus…Are you the coming one? Which is an interesting question, because in chapter three John the Baptist is the one declaring this to everyone. He is the herald proclaiming that Jesus is the coming ne. Jesus is the Messiah. Jesus is the one who baptizes in the Holy Spirit and fire. What do you do when you're the one who is telling everyone else about Jesus, but then you start having doubts yourself? Join us this week as we answer these doubts!

What if I told you I know the most powerful words ever spoken? Would you believe me?Admittedly, that's a pretty bold claim considering most people can come up with quotes from respected figures that have inspired them in many positive ways. Quotes like, "Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts." -Winston S. ChurchillThat's a great quote, however, it's not even close to the most powerful words ever spoken. I credit Jesus with speaking the most powerful words ever spoken. In my opinion, the words Jesus spoke to the woman caught in the act of adultery are the most powerful words ever spoken. Jesus said to her, “neither do I condemn thee.” Those words literally saved her life. They were more powerful than her accusers. Those words were more powerful than her sin. They were even more powerful than her shame. Incredibly, the very words Jesus spoke to her, were intended for you as well. If you've ever had a regret or felt condemned by guilt and shame then this episode is for you. Your life is about to change forever. “Neither do I condemn thee.” - Jesus Are you ready to experience the most powerful words every spoken? Remember, great lives are not born, they're built. Let's start building!
In today's passage we see how some people acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah because He fulfilled all that had been prophesised about Him in God's Word. Others however refused to and were offended by Jesus and his message. The challenge for us today is how do we respond to Jesus- Are we offended by Him and His message- Or are we all ears to hear the life giving and hopeful message of forgiveness- -Today we continue in Luke chapter 7 but consider 2 things from verses 22-23--1- Fulfilled prophecy -2- Acknowledgement of the prophet

The Big Question! Lk leads us with crowds through Nazareth, Capernaum, Opposition, Calling, Sermon. Centurion's faith, Widow's son: “Great prophet, God visiting his people.” Leads to John's question with revealing reflections. John is in prison for courage against Herod Antipas. He is training his own disciples. He's loves the desert, fasting. Jesus is at banquets, not fasting, etc. John told of him with fire and judgment. John knows Jesus, but he's disconcerting. Jn sends his question directly to Jesus: ‘Are you the one who is coming?' Israel's story & scripture throb in its words. An Answer in Deeds that Challenge Us to Recognize God Jes could say, ‘Yes, I am.' ‘How could you ask?' But Jes understands the question & knows the answer changes the world. He answers with actions. But even marvels must be a language to be an answer. Jes enacts words of Isaiah, Malachi. etc. Jes' deeds say God's ancient promises are here. Only the Messiah/God could do it. God's image comes to new, surprising clarity. Very disconcerting. Don't stumble! Looking for a King in the Wilderness Jes knows the crowds carry the same question/quest. They went out to John looking for a Messiah, an anointed King. Jesus pushes them to think deeply. They went into the wilderness seeking... What? A reed (Herod)? King? A prophet! John's own identity partly answered his question. He was gateway to a new era. He welcomed ordinary people, soldiers, tax collectors. Last prophet of the old, pointing to new. Pharisees rejecting John led to rejecting Jesus, refusing God's good purpose for them. John and Jesus, Different, Caricatured – Both Come from God People want God to be tidy with short clear answers. Who is coming? John came. Jesus came. Very different look, sharing the same great event, different roles. People had ready boxes for them. But what God is doing is vast, complex, real, beautiful, life-giving. You have to see it, live inside it. Wisdom & justice shine.
John the Baptist sent word to Jesus: “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?” I. Who is it that's doubting?, vv2-3. II. Why does he have these doubts?, vv1-3. III. How does Jesus answer his doubts and strengthen his faith?, vv4-6

The Jews confront Jesus: Are you the Christ? Jesus told them they can’t believe because they aren’t His sheep. His sheep hear their Master’s voice, He gives them eternal life, and no one can pluck them from His, or the Father’s hand. He taught two, seemingly opposing biblical truths: It is man’s responsibility to believe in Jesus, but there is also divine sovereignty. He also taught that we are His, and the Father’s, forever (eternal security), and in the process, Jesus claimed his divinity.

Josh started our new series ‘Questioning Jesus’ looking at John 13, answering the question posed by the disciples to Jesus ‘Are you my Servant?’. Josh encouraged us to be reliant on Jesus, rooted in who he says we are and choose to live a radical life of humility and love because Jesus first showed us how to love. John 13:1-17
Based upon the crucifixion accounts in the Bible Episode NT32 – The Soldier's story ‘I saw it all. You see, I was in the Roman army at the time and I lived in Jerusalem. We'd ‘eard about Jesus and many of us ‘ad seen ‘im. ‘E didn't look anything special, but they kept telling us about the miracles'e'd done, and the things ‘e'd said about God. We thought everyone loved Jesus - but we were wrong!' ‘In the middle of the night we got ordered to go and arrest Jesus, and one of ‘is followers, a man named Judas, took us to ‘im in some kind of garden in the middle of nowhere so we could arrest ‘im! Why ‘e needed arresting I'll never know! It's not as if ‘e ever did anything wrong. Still, orders is orders, so me and me men went with Judas and some of the Jewish guards to this garden - and there was Jesus. (P) Judas was scum! ‘E led us right to Jesus, ‘is own friend – someone ‘e'd followed and lived with for three years, and then shows us in the darkness exactly who ‘e was by giving 'im a welcoming kiss – the kiss of a friend … becoming the kiss of betrayal!' ‘Well, at that point we arrested Jesus and took ‘im to the Jewish leaders who hate ‘im. We went back to our barracks for some sleep. But apparently, when ‘e gets to the Jewish leaders, they accuse ‘im of all kinds of rubbish – an' no one can agree with what anyone else says! It's a shambles. But then the ‘igh priest asks Jesus if ‘e's the Son of God? ‘N Jesus says – Yeah, ‘e is! This makes the leaders go potty and they demand ‘is death. Mind you, I reckon they'd already decided they wanted ‘im dead before they even asked that question. – And anyway, what worried me a little was, what if Jesus was telling the truth? What if ‘e really was the Son of God?' ‘Anyway, then, we ‘ear that Jesus was kinda beaten up by the Jewish leaders and taken to our boss, Pilate and Pilate starts to question Jesus about all the false things that the Jewish leaders have said about ‘im. Pilate's not stupid, ‘e knows that they're just jealous of Jesus and want ‘im out the way so they can keep their own privileged positions. Then ‘e asks Jesus – ‘Are you the King of the Jews?' ‘Jesus answers that one and says that his Kingdom is not of this world! (P) And Pilate gets a little worried about that answer. And as Jesus hasn't shown any signs of being either dangerous or guilty of anything, Pilate starts to think, ‘I better let ‘im go!' ‘Now, it was the time of a special feast in Jerusalem called Passover when each year Pilate lets one of the prisoners, who we've worked really hard to catch, go free! So we're none to ‘appy about this idea, but apparently it keeps the Jews ‘appy! Anyway, Pilate doesn't want to execute Jesus, so he goes before a ‘uge crowd and tries to make them agree to let Jesus go! But they refused! I think the Jewish leaders were down in the crowd telling the people to shout against Jesus. And then, the people start to demand that someone else, a murderer no less, called Barabbas, be set free! It made no sense to me!' ‘So Barabbas – the murdering scum that ‘e is – gets released and Pilate starts asking the crowd what ‘e should do with Jesus! At first ‘e suggests that ‘e has ‘im whipped and set free. But as I watch I see those religious leaders out in the crowd shouting as loud as they can for Jesus to be crucified! Crucified! ‘E's innocent and they want to kill ‘im with one of the nastiest deaths that's ever been thought of? Pilate didn't like the idea of that, you could tell, but when the Jewish leaders started to say they'd tell the Roman Emperor that Pilate wouldn't execute a rival king - because Jesus had claimed to be the ‘King of the Jews' and Rome considered anyone who claimed to be a king to be an enemy of the Emperor - Pilate ‘ad no choice. It was more than ‘is job was worth to say no! So ‘e ‘anded Jesus over to us – to crucify ‘im.' (P) ‘But all the time I was wondering, if ‘e really is the Son of God, then why is ‘e going through all this? Why doesn't ‘e just walk...

Jonah Ch. 1, or scene one. What do we learn from Jonah? We learn what not to do. Jonah's character is contrasted with the Pagan Sailors in this chapter. They come across as more caring and faithful than Jonah does. What about us as followers of Jesus? Are we mindful of our example around others? Somebody is always watching how we act and behave. Represent Christ! Beware of the Jonah Complex!
If you remember your first love, you probably remember feeling "butterflies" in your stomach—a feeling of excitement when you were around them. You were in love! You didn't care who knew. When it comes to your faith, do you feel that same way about Jesus? Are you bubbling over with excitement to share Him with others? If not, you're not alone. How do we get back to that "first love" feeling with Jesus? Or, perhaps you haven't had that experience with Him. Why is it important that we do? Join Pastor Chad Stuart as he starts a new sermon series called "Seven Pictures" with a message titled, "Remember our First Love."
The churches at Pergamum and Thyatira shared a common problem - they were allowing compromise into their faith. This raises two questions that we all need to ask ourselves: Are you tolerating partial obedience to Jesus? Are you compromising to gain acceptance of the culture?
Luke 18:9-141. The bold compassion of Jesus, v. 92. The Church is a place of diversity, v.10“It takes all sorts to make a world; or a church. This may be even truer of a church. If grace perfects nature it must expand all our natures into the full richness of the diversity which God intended when He made them, and Heaven will display far more variety than Hell.” -C.S. Lewis3. Misplaced righteousness, v. 11-12False sources of righteousness…a) self“To exalt oneself is to put one’s self in an improper place. This is a danger to the young believers and a trap to the older saints. Only after the cross has done its thorough work in a person’s heart can he refrain from expressing himself. Only then will a person allow others to receive the glory and remain silent himself as a sword in God’s scabbard.” -Watchman Neeb) religious accomplishments-Matthew 6:1-4c) race-Galatians 3:23-29Three problems with racial supremacy...i. it nullifies the work of Christ on the crossii. it creates for you a standard of unforgiveness that will be applied to you-Matthew 6:14-15iii. it violates the context of heaven-Revelation 7:9-104. Gospel humility, v. 13-14To pray you need only know three things...a. know that there is a Godb. know yourselfc. ask God for what you needMental worship…Is there a conversation that you’ve been needing to have but have put it off? How are you helped towards having this conversation by the bold compassion of Jesus? Are you currently withholding forgiveness from someone and if so, on what basis? How has the Cross informed and influenced the way you treat people of other races? When it comes to race relations do you act more like a Christian or like a member of your race?Does your knowledge of yourself humble you, make you prideful or something else?
Isaiah 5:1-7; 6:8-13 & Matthew 13:1-23 -- Jesus alludes to former visions of Israel's greatest prophets to help communicate what he is up to while he ushers in and establishes the Reign (Kingdom) of God. Parables are such an incredible teaching tool that Jesus says will both conceal and reveal at the same time. For those who are there to learn, they will hear the ancient prophetic voice and image which will lead them into a new way of thinking and understanding everything using their imagination. For those who are there to qualify Jesus or find things to use against him, there will only be confusion. Are we ready to consider the Kingdom of the parables? Are we ready to open ourselves to the Kingdom of God brought to us by/through Jesus? Are we with ears ready to hear?

Is she your spiritual mother? Does she lead you closer to Jesus? Are you just now beginning to learn who Mary is? Has she helped you in difficult times? What devotions to her do you practice? Have you been challenged to explain or defend the Catholic Church’s understanding of her?

Does she lead you closer to Jesus? Are you just now beginning to learn who Mary is? Has she helped you in difficult times? What devotions to her do you practice? Our Verses: Matt 11:3- John the Baptist's followers asked Jesus- “Are you the Messiah we've been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?” Matt 26:63 A high religious leader demanded, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” Strong Questions about a messiah! Messiah means the anointed one. Our Lord Jesus has the title of Christ. These 2 words-Messiah and Christ are synonyms. Both describe one who is to come; One above all others sent by God to heal and repair the world. When Jesus came to earth, His people, the Jews, were expecting the Messiah. There were clear Bible references to this. But...they had a different idea of what the Messiah would do. Their messiah was a king who would conquer Rome. Even his disciples thought this. Acts 1:6 They didn't understand the Old Testament reference to the death of the Messiah for his people. Isa 53. They engaged in wishful thinking- their goal was freedom from their oppressors and that couldn't happen if the Messiah died. Jesus had a different mission, a two part mission- first to redeem mankind through His death and resurrection; the second, to prepare mankind for His coming Kingdom. (we'll explain that in the next episode) Jesus Christ came as Messiah of all mankind, not just Israel. He would first die to pay for the sins of mankind and later... come back as King. On the day of His death the high religious leader demanded, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” Jesus said “I am”. Mark 14:62 In summary, Both the ancients (men like Moses Deut 18:15 and Daniel 9:25) and Jesus contemporaries knew a Messiah or Christ was coming. All the prophecies about the Messiah were fulfilled by Jesus of Nazareth. He is the Messiah. Next time, Messiah Part 2- Time to Decide!
