We were supposed to talk about Deacon King Kong. We did not.    When Jen sat down with Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist James McBride to discuss the Jen Hatmaker Book Club's May selection, the conversation took a hard left turn into something far richer — a wide-ranging tour through one of the most remarkable lives in American letters.    James opens up about a scrappy and troubled adolescence in Brooklyn, getting straightened out in the heat of the Louisville, Kentucky summers, and the music that quite literally saved him. He reminisces about touring Europe as a young musician and playing saxophone alongside Stevie Ray Vaughan at Antone's in Austin, traveling with Michael Jackson on the Victory Tour as a young journalist, surviving the Boston Globe's newsroom in the 1980s, writing songs for Anita Baker and Grover Washington, working with Quincy Jones, and getting dressed down by Harry Belafonte in a writers' room. Along the way, he reflects on race, art, faith, forgiveness, music, storytelling, old cars, and why the best writers are simply the people paying closest attention. He also shares what gives him hope about America right now — and it might surprise you.   Of course, we touch on Deacon King Kong—its unforgettable characters, humor, and heart—but this conversation became something even bigger: a portrait of the life experiences that shaped the storyteller behind the book.   Come for the book club discussion. Stay for one of the most fascinating conversations Jen has had in a long time.   Oh, and Deacon King Kong is a masterpiece. This week, we bow down and raise up the almighty guitar heroes! The foundation of Rock n' Punk n' Metal is the guitar and the amazing sounds that those who wield them can make. This episode of the show is a real treat, folks! We've got a fantastic conversation with the one and only Kenny Wayne Shepherd, blues mastermind and guitar virtuoso. But before we dive into that, our host Mandy Connell tackles some serious topics, from the absurdity of expecting women to perform at work despite debilitating period pain to the importance of exposing kids to nature and its benefits for their immune systems. She also shares her thoughts on the Colorado education system, which is, quite frankly, embarrassing. Mandy's conversation with Kenny Wayne Shepherd is a must-listen. They talk about his incredible journey from a 16-year-old prodigy to a blues legend, and how he's evolved as a musician over the years. Kenny shares stories about his early days, including how he learned to play the guitar from his grandmother and how he met Stevie Ray Vaughan. He also talks about his latest project, a cover album that's sure to delight fans of rock and roll.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Born on June 3, 1982 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Davey Jones brings the rich musical heritage of the Deep South to every stage he steps on. A true multi-instrumentalist, Jones is best known for his searing guitar playing but also masters drums, piano, bass, organ, and more — often performing and recording nearly every instrument on his releases himself. Drawing from Southern Rock, traditional Blues, Gospel, and Country, he has forged a distinct and powerful sound that pays homage to the greats while remaining unmistakably his own. With more than 30 years of writing and performing, Jones has built a reputation for high-energy, soulful shows that connect deeply with audiences. From his early days playing in Southern churches and gospel groups to rocking county and blues stages across the region, his journey has led him to share bills and stages throughout the United States. His dynamic live performances and genuine connection with fans have become his signature — a philosophy best captured in his own words: “It's simply not enough to put on a good show, you've got to involve the audience and make them feel like the show is dedicated to them. Because, at the end of the day, this show is for them.”Jones' talent has been recognized with accolades including “Most Talented Musician” for the state of Louisiana in 2000. His playing draws favorable comparisons to blues and rock icons such as Tab Benoit, Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Chuck Berry. His music has received airplay on “Blues Legends” radio and major blues playlists, further cementing his place among today's most compelling blues and roots artists.Whether headlining clubs, festivals, or theaters, Davey Jones delivers the kind of authentic, roof-raising performances that remind fans why they fell in love with the blues.https://daveyjonesmusic.com

Colin Burgeson is a blues/rock guitarist, singer and songwriter from Coeur d' Alene, Idaho. His music blends soulful blues, catchy rock n' roll guitar riffs and soaring melodic leads to create a sound that can be both relaxed and slow, and upbeat and energetic. In his guitar and vocal work, you'll hear a sound influenced by the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe Bonamassa, Eric Clapton, Eric Johnson, Gary Moore, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and much more!            Colin developed a love for music starting at a young age, primarily from watching his father, Eric Burgeson. Eric was a career musician who spent time in the late 80s touring with British rock band Foghat. He began taking guitar lessons from his father at age 9 and started writing songs and joined his first band by age 15. After his first band dissolved, he focused on his studies for a few years and briefly pursued a career in law enforcement.            But his passion for music never faded, and he continued to write music and hone his guitar skills until teaming up with longtime friend and bandmate Seamus Gleason, who would later perform drums on his debut solo album, to form heavy metal band Knight of Tears. The band would spend the next two years performing at various venues and festivals in the inland northwest, and released a self titled EP in 2016.             As Knight of Tears became inactive in the summer of 2016, an opportunity arose, and Colin successfully auditioned for and joined Spokane hard rock band Invasive. He would spend the next three years with Invasive, touring throughout Idaho, Washington and Oregon, opening for popular touring acts such as Quiet Riot, Steel Panther, Metal Church and more, and contributed guitar tracks to the singles “Sea of Black” and “Scars.” After vocalist Gary Cook left the band in 2019, the remaining members would reconvene to form hard rock/heavy metal band Psidium. Psidium would release the album “Blood in the Water” in 2021, which led to Colin's initial partnership with Pavement Entertainment.            While he enjoyed writing and performing in the hard rock and heavy metal style he had been doing for the past several years, he eventually discovered that it was no longer his passion. After listening to records by Joe Bonamassa, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Gary Moore, he decided to pursue a solo career in blues and blues-rock music, while also developing himself as a lead vocalist and frontman. During the recording of their second album in 2022, Psidium would become inactive, and he would go on to join classic rock cover band Laketown Sound and finish writing what would become his debut solo album. Psidium officially disbanded in 2023, and Colin shifted his focus to his solo career, completing the album in the fall of 2025.            Currently, Colin is performing at festivals and events in the Inland Northwest with Laketown Sound, while preparing to release his debut solo album, “From Sunshine Into Shadow,” with tour dates and performances to follow!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

The latest Blues is the Truth is live and this week we're shifting gears. There are no awards or trophies this time around, just a deep dive into the kind of music that keeps the pulse of this scene beating. We've got a massive lineup that spans the full spectrum of the craft. You'll hear the raw energy of The Milkmen, The South Island Rhythm Kings, and The Paul Michael Band alongside the world class talent of Geoff Achison and harmonica ace Giles Robson. The vibe stays heavy and authentic with tracks from John Cee Stannard, Tom Waits For No Man, and the effortlessly cool Stray Cat Willy and the Strays. We're also honoring the storytellers and the technicians like Michael Messer, Half Deaf Clatch, and the Geoff Garbow Band. And because we always respect the lineage, we've brought the giants into the room. BB King, Freddie King, Mike Bloomfield, and Stevie Ray Vaughan are all here to remind us why we fell in love with this music in the first place. From the modern fire of Samantha Fish and Alice Armstrong to the deep pocket grooves of Willie Buck and Bob Corritore, Dave Specter, and The Steady Rollin' Revue, there isn't a wasted second. Rounding it all out with the Backyard Casanovas, Kilborn Alley, Mighty Mike Schermer, and Charlie and the Fez Kings, it's an hour of music that flows perfectly from one story to the next. It's a masterclass in why the blues is and always will be the truth.

On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with guitarist and composer Bob Lanzetti, best known as one of the founding members of Snarky Puppy. I've admired Bob's playing for a long time, so getting the chance to talk with him felt especially meaningful. We begin with something many musicians quietly carry with them: the fear of hand issues and how that concern evolves over the course of a career. Bob reflects honestly on how he thinks about it now compared to earlier years. From there, we rewind to the beginning—growing up around his dad's guitar, discovering The Beatles, and the simple invitation that changed everything: “Learn this song and you can sit in with my band.” That moment set Bob firmly on the path toward becoming a guitarist. He traces his journey through early mentors, jazz studies, and eventually to the University of North Texas, where he found a musical community that would change his life—and where Snarky Puppy first came together. We spend time talking about the musical ecosystem around North Texas as well, especially the gospel and R&B scenes that shaped Bob's ear in ways the classroom couldn't. Bob shares how Snarky Puppy actually learns and rehearses music—often through oral tradition, demos, and Logic sessions—and how the band's three-guitar setup works without stepping on each other's sonic space. Along the way, he reflects on something younger musicians often overlook: the importance of restraint, listening, and self-balancing within a band. One of my favorite parts of the conversation centers on Bob's Nosferatu project, where he composed and performed an original score for the classic silent film during the COVID years. That project opened the door to exploring 20th-century classical textures, string writing, layered guitars, and production techniques. We wrap up by talking about the wide range of influences that shape Bob's music—from Charlie Christian and Jim Hall to Sonic Youth and Derek Bailey—and what's ahead in 2026, including GroundUP Festival, touring with Snarky Puppy alongside the Metropole Orchestra, his trio work, and the growing role of producing in his creative life.Key TakeawaysMusicians confront physical concerns over time — long careers require resilience and perspective.Early invitations can shape a life path — a simple opportunity to sit in with a band set Bob on the guitar journey.Community matters — the University of North Texas and the surrounding Dallas scene were foundational for Snarky Puppy.Listening and restraint define great band playing — especially in complex ensemble settings like a three-guitar lineup.Musical learning often happens by ear — oral tradition and demos play a huge role in how bands develop material.Creative side projects expand the palette — Bob's Nosferatu score opened the door to new textures and production ideas.Producing can become another creative outlet — shaping the sound of recordings scratches the same itch as performing.Music from the EpisodeB - Bob LanzettiAnonymous - Bob LanzettiThe Seven Deadly Sins (from Nosferatu) - Bob LanzettiJenny is a Donkey - Bob LanzettiAbout the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is a podcast hosted by Brad Williams, featuring conversations with musicians, composers, producers, and creative thinkers about their musical journeys. On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with Jake & Shelby, a Nashville-based songwriting duo whose music is built on a natural chemistry that you can hear immediately. Our conversation feels a lot like their songs—honest, relaxed, and rooted in the process of figuring things out together. We start in the middle of a Nashville winter storm in early 2026, when power outages and unexpected downtime forced them to slow down—and unexpectedly reignited their songwriting spark. From there, we rewind to how the two of them first met through Jake's dad's music school, and the wide range of artists that shaped their musical instincts along the way, including Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Lizzy McAlpine, John Mayer, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Cars, and Madison Cunningham. One of my favorite parts of the conversation is hearing how their duet sound developed naturally rather than by design. They didn't study classic duos or try to replicate an established formula. Instead, their voices gradually found each other. Jake talks about how he essentially learned harmony from Shelby, and how their blend now feels like one shared musical voice—two distinct tones moving with the same phrasing and instinct. We also talk about some of the surreal early moments in their career, including the sudden attention that came when Michael Bublé and Kim Kardashian shared their music, amplifying their audience almost overnight. That early exposure opened doors, but it also led them to the next stage of their work: moving beyond the stripped-down Just Us era and into a fully produced debut album recorded across Nashville and Los Angeles.Along the way, they share how songs typically come together—often starting with a guitar idea, building melody, and shaping lyrics in shared phone notes. Collaboration, for them, means letting the song win when disagreements come up. By the end of the conversation, it's clear they've already built a massive catalog—nearly 100 finished songs—and they're still very much at the beginning of their story.Key TakeawaysHow Jake & Shelby's musical partnership began through Jake's dad's music school. The wide range of influences shaping their sound, from Taylor Swift and Lizzy McAlpine to Stevie Ray Vaughan and The Cars. Why their vocal harmony developed organically rather than by modeling classic duos. The surprising early boost when Michael Bublé and Kim Kardashian shared their music online. The shift from their stripped-down Just Us era into a full-band debut album. How songs often start with guitar ideas, shared phone notes, and collaborative lyric writing. Why their rule during disagreements is simple: let the song win.Music from the EpisodeLoophole — Jake & ShelbyYou Don't Know — Jake & ShelbyShut Up and Kiss Me — Jake & ShelbyFalling Out of Love — Jake & ShelbyMorning Light — Jake & ShelbyAbout the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is a long-form conversation podcast where host Brad Williams sits down with some of the most thoughtful musicians, composers, and artists working today. Vampiro digs mid-90s Japanese wrestling, getting new guys over, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Krav Maga (not necessarily in that order). He's got great stories about "calling it in the ring," what it means to be fired up, and the lost art of selling. He's also talking about the great Lucha Underground vignettes, the Will Ospreay vs Ricochet match, and his own legendary bout with Pentagon, Jr. And he thinks season 3 of Lucha is so good, he's not sure WTF they're gonna do for season 4!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Iconic Rock (and Blues) Photographer, Robert M. Knight joins host Jim Ervin as he welcomes Knight to talk about his early photographic work with the likes of Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and the Yardbirds. Knight's obsession with photography led him to London at age 16, and the rest is history. He has photographed thousands of musicians in his more than half century in the business, he is a published author, he is the subject of the documentary, 'Rock Prophecies', but perhaps his biggest distinction is being the sole photographer at the Alpine Valley Music Festival on August 26, 1990 in Troy, Wisconsin. Sadly, that was the final concert of Stevie Ray Vaughan. This episode is one for the ages, so check it out! Episode Description: What's the one superpower you need to survive in your family? That's the thought-provoking question that launches this episode of The JB and Sandy Show, where Sandy, JB, and Tricia invite listeners into their world of quirky household dynamics, Austin oddities, and unforgettable local stories. The episode kicks off with updates on Austin's iconic Butler Hike and Bike Trail, now sporting new mile markers and maps to help both seasoned locals and curious visitors navigate the city's scenic loops. JB shares insider tips on the best routes, while Sandy marvels at the trail's vibrant community—where you might spot everything from fencing enthusiasts to falconers. “You look like you're out here every single day and I'm just figuring my way to the Stevie Ray Vaughan statue,” Sandy jokes, capturing the spirit of Austin's outdoor scene. But the heart of the show is a hilarious and heartfelt roundtable: What superpower do you need to survive in the JB and Sandy household? Sandy claims invisibility until Tricia's had her morning coffee (“Otherwise, I might get eaten alive like a grizzly bear!”), JB reveals his role as the gatekeeper of all passwords and the family's food forager, and Tricia proudly owns her omniscience—knowing where every lost item is, from keys to purple pencils. “The ability for a mom's brain to know all the things is incredible,” she says, as JB compares her to a real-life Terminator, scanning and storing every detail.Memorable moments abound, from the relatable struggle of getting teens out the door (“When I say hurry, that means move your body faster!”) to the universal debate over the snooze button. The hosts share laughs, gentle ribbing, and genuine insight into the patience, organization, and humor it takes to keep a household running. The episode wraps with a celebration of Austin's enduring weirdness: the 37th Street neighborhood's election of a four-legged mayor, Mo Bamba—a pug-chihuahua mix with a snaggle tooth and a campaign slogan, “He won't just fight for you, he'll bark at you!” With over 12,000 votes cast, Mo Bamba joins a tradition of animal mayors, reminding everyone that Austin's spirit is alive and well. Notable quotes and moments:“To be invisible is a big one on mine.”“I am the gatekeeper of all schedules and all items. My superpower is omniscience.”“He won't just fight for you, he'll bark at you!”This episode is a joyful blend of family humor, local pride, and the kind of stories that make Austin—and the JB and Sandy Show—truly unique.Call to Action: Ready for a dose of laughter, local flavor, and relatable family chaos?

Welcome back to When Words Fail, Music Speaks – the podcast that battles depression one riff at a time. In today's episode, host James Cox sits down with the charismatic front‑man of the 80s‑metal‑infused outfit All Singers (aka Mike Golarz) for a deep‑dive into the healing power of music, the quirks of self‑teaching, and the raw joy of live performance. We kick off with Mike's origin story: a childhood of backyard jam sessions, a classically trained girlfriend who nudged his vocal chops, and a love‑letter to the acoustic guitar that still shapes his songwriting today. He shares practical tips for aspiring guitarists—why Tom Petty's simple chords are the perfect launchpad, how to survive sore fingertips, and the surprisingly effective “belly‑rub” superstition he uses to keep his airflow in check while recording. From there, we trace the band's unlikely formation during the pandemic—how an 80s hair‑metal cover group morphed into All Singers, the serendipitous connections that landed them opening for legends like Ace Frehley, L.A. Guns, Queensryche, and even two versions of Queensryche. Mike reflects on the thrill of sharing the stage with his childhood heroes and the humility that keeps those icons grounded. The conversation then shifts to their upcoming record “We Own the Night,” slated for a November 14, 2025 release, and the quirky rituals that fuel Mike's creative process. He also reveals his “unskippable” album list — from Soundgarden's Bad Motorfinger to James' pick "Black Sabbath's Dehumanizer" — and the one record that still moves him to tears: Stevie Ray Vaughan's Texas Flood.Whether you're a budding musician, a metalhead, or simply seeking a soundtrack for life's ups and downs, this episode delivers a hearty mix of humor, honesty, and hard‑earned wisdom. Grab your headphones, turn up the volume, and let the music speak.

Dopeycon 2025 Tickets: https://buytickets.at/thedopeyfoundation/1765668This week on Dopey we celebrate Dopes Heather and Jen! Both with ONE YEAR! We read some emails and I got to sit down with the legend! IDGAF Foods (aka the guy behind eating hot dogs off the floor on Instagram) for a brutally honest trip through his addiction, art, and recovery. From smoking crack at 15 in Manchester, CT, to guzzling buckets of Molly and shards of ketamine out of Kahlua bottles, to swallowing and later digging through his own shit for balloons of drugs, his story is a nonstop circus of chaos. He dodged arrests, hustled Oxy 80s and Hartford heroin, spent $500 a day chasing tar and Roxies in Utah, and somehow never got caught.Out of the madness came art: digital psychedelia, album covers for major bands, and eventually his IDGAF Foods account—where eating sketchy food became exposure therapy and a way to help addicts. Along the way: scam hustles, OCD hand-washing, sitting in trees at parties to dodge cops, exposure therapy with oat milk, Jimmy Fallon holding up his artwork, and a grandmother calling him an idiot. Now clean since 2012, he's turned the insanity into purpose, with IDGAF Foods helping people avoid relapse by saying “Don't Be a Fucking Pussy.”All that and more on this brand new episode of that good old Dopey Show!
