(NSFW) Welcome to the first episode of 2024 with Ed, Chris, and Nate—a lively journey through the ever-evolving craft beer landscape. Ed brings back some hoppy treasures of Weld Works Extra Extra Juicy Bits IPA from his Colorado holiday, setting the stage for a year of exciting new brews. For the old news front, the gang talks about some drama that happened with the closing of Flying Basset, intertwining with its in-house culinary scene. Chandler bases Buqui Bichi Brewing is ready to open its second location in Phoenix this year, and The Starving Artist, powered by OHSO Spirits, prepares to breathe new life into the old Helton Brewing Company space. Phoenix Magazine's intriguing article, "The 12-Pack of Arizona Beers We Sent to Texas For Losing a Bet," becomes a point of discussion—do they agree with the list, and how many of these beers would they personally savor? Also on the list is a style not really talked about the Southwest IPA. What is that? On the non-alcoholic front, White Claw makes a surprising move, introducing just a plain old seltzer water. Nate, ever the cider enthusiast, expresses a longing for more hop-infused ciders at Cider Corp. But that's just one mans opinion. Wrapping up the episode, the trio reflects on the industry's landscape, sharing insights on the notable downturn in craft beer sales for 2023.   Our Information: Music Credit: Takotsubo Men Stories we talked about: https://www.phoenixmag.com/2024/01/05/the-12-pack-of-arizona-beers-we-sent-to-texas-for-losing-a-bet/ https://en.buquibichi.com/home https://untappd.com/b/weldwerks-brewing-co-extra-extra-juicy-bits/2167198 https://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/restaurants/former-helton-taproom-in-phoenix-to-be-replaced-with-the-starving-artist-17909418 The assorted sounds of three ageing humans hitting things in a studio for five days. Helton Brewing Company puts out an annual Halloween video. This year they asked us to be in it. And by in it we mean get killed in it. Ha. It was a ton of fun to shoot. The shoot made us thankful for the amount of work it takes to create great art. Join us as we explain. Mike and Rob also weigh in on Halloween for adults and the shooting death on the set of 'Rust.' Also, Mike is going to pull the trigger and get his first tattoo at 46. Rob asks him all about it as we sip on Helton Brewing's Northeast IPA.

We discovered The Brewbecue by their interview on Tap That Az. I commented on the IG post and Eric said they would be great for our show. He was right because The Brewbecue is so much more than smoked meat. They are a B-corp that leans into their charity work. This is exactly the type of start up business we want to talk with. The ownership team are all super laid back folks, but also incredibly insightful. They don't just do stuff just because. There is a lot of thought behind what they do and why they do it. They utterly destroy stereo types. I love meeting people like this. You hear that they were part of a metal band and jump to whatever conclusion you will*, and then they talk about thermodynamics of the smoker and you hear their heart for those in need and your mind explodes. The Brewbecue team is exactly the type of people we look for. Hard working craftsmen (and woman) who are thoughtful and intentional about what they do. We need so much more of this in Az. We unfortunately did not get to try their food at the interview, but we are going to try really hard to make it to their next event. Please follow them on Instagram and show them some love. If you have an event and need some Damn Fine barbecue, please reach out and contact The Brewbecue. Not only will you be helping a local business get started, but also supporting those in need here in Arizona. I would also like to thank our gracious host, Helton Brewing Company. They were kind enough to let us record out back so we had the area to ourselves. I highly recommend this place. The beer is fantastic.

Medusa is a new strain of neomexicanus hops, meaning it's a wild breed of hops cultivated in New Mexico/ Colorado. This hop will give this beer notes of intense guava, melons, apricots and citrus fruits with a smooth, but prominent bitterness, followed by a pop of fruity juiciness from the expressive yeast strain and heavy-handed Dry-Hop! When I started this podcast in late 2017 my vision was much greater than just an Arizona local craft beverage podcast. From the beginning my goal was to continue add new elements (writing, photography, video, events, etc) to allow it to morph into something even better. In July of 2017 I was introduced to Erik Merkow, founder of AZ Food and Wine. With Eriks experience and our common ground on key personal and professional values I knew that we would become a force to be reckoned with.  Fast forward to April 19th 2018 and there we stood in the beer garden of Helton Brewing Company 90 minutes before our first event as AZ Food and Beer (AZFAB for the cool kids). Nervous to see if anyone would actually show up. But they did. And it was a great time. Beer provided by Helton Brewing, Helio Basin Brewing and Goldwater Brewing. Food provided by Noble Bread and Helton compliments of chef Judd Cummings. Live music from the amazingly talented Kim Capria. A stunning live painting of Muhammed Ali by Katia Von Kral. And most importantly a group of amazing friends to share in this special occasion many of whom joined in for a moment or two in this episode. My man Chris Dodson took over hosting duties for this episode and crushed it as usual. Enjoy the show!

In this episode I get to hang out with Brian Helton. His focus is not to make some crazy concoction or off-the-wall thing but rather to make solid beer. And be able to consistently make it awesome. Time and time again. Well, so far so good Brian. As of this writing Helton Brewing Company has been opened for just around 1 year and from what they are doing over there they are going to open for a long time. A beautiful brewery and tasting room along with a brand new beer garden make this place on 22nd Street and Indian School a must visit. Oh yeah, they make some awesome waffles and stuff too. Bacon cheddar waffles which are totally my style. This Saturday May 20th, 2017 Helton is celebrating their 1 year anniversary with a grand old shindig. They are tapping a new Double IPA, will have live music, great food, and lots of other exciting stuff. And of course I'll be there so now you HAVE to come. See you there! Or if you are reading this and listening to the episode at a later date, well you sure did miss one hell of a party. You totally missed out and should regret it forever.  Big thanks to Alexxis Grant for taking all the pictures for this episode.
