Grab a pint of Guinness and let's go!!!As you all know, Brian and I are also cologne nerds. In the cologne world (fragcom) you have niche (craft) and designers (macro/Big Beer) but there are a few designers that get a pass by the "niche snobs" as being acceptable. Kind of like Guinness. It's really big beer, but most craft crazies don't mind and will still enjoy a Guinness. St. Patrick's Day is the perfect day for it.You don't have to drink Guinness, there are several other great Irish stouts available. And many local breweries offer up a great Dry Irish Stout for the holiday. We share some suggestions for you to check out. Brian is also a fanboy of the "Half and Half," with the old Black and Tan being the most well known. There are a lot of other options there, too.Outside of the beer we dive into who St. Patrick was, or might have been. Some info on the lore and legends of St. Patrick's Day, and some consumer predictions for this year's celebrations. However you do it, have a Happy St. Patrick's Day! Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! Big Beer doesn't love you like craft beer does. We're back and we're ready to party.  We missed a Super Bowl show but we're recapping the game and, more importantly, the beer commercials this week.  On that note, Atlanta's Monday Night Brewing isn't happy about Coors' "Case of the Mondays" campaign.  Monday Night has been selling a mix pack with the name for many years now.  A cease and desist sent to Molson was replied with, essentially, "too bad, it's done now."  In Presidential news... tariffs.  So hot right now.  They're on, they're off, they're back on.  We can't keep up.  If they are on, they could hit your beer prices.  Proposed aluminum tariffs will impact packaging costs for most producers.  And if all these other tariffs go into place it could hit malt, hops, and who knows what else. Some sorta good news as one beer purchasing index shows sales aren't down as much as they have been.  It's a bummer when things been down less is good news.  With all the breweries closing their doors (this week, Alamo) we'll take any ray of sunshine we can get.Looking ahead, the folks at Total Wine shared some of their predictions for trends this year.  What do you think will be the hot item???Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! It might not be obvious from all the brands and styles of beer on offer, but something like 80% of the beer we drink in Australia is owned by two Japanese megacompanies Lion and Asahi - both of which have spent millions of dollars buying up craft breweries in Australia. And if you're a pub owner in need of renovations, or a new tap system, or you’re opening up a new venue, there's a good chance you'll be hearing from one of these companies, calling to make an offer that’s hard to refuse. Mazen Hajjar is CEO of Hawkers Beer, one of the largest independent producers in Victoria. He argues there’s a market duopoly at play, and it’s strangling what might otherwise be a thriving craft beer industry in Australia. Like any good parable, the "David and Goliath" self-mythology of the American craft brewing industry in the '80s and '90s was illuminating, compelling — and maybe a bit reductive, too. In Episodes 33 and 34, we examined this us-versus-them dynamic from the perspective of one of the “thems,” Keith Villa, who created the Blue Moon Brewing Company from within the Coors colossus in 1995. Today, we're coming at it once again through the eyes of New Realm Brewing Co. cofounder and brewmaster Mitch Steele, who did a substantial stretch, semi-concurrent to Villa's at Coors, at Big Beer's biggest and baddest "Goliath" of all: Missouri's pre-InBev Anheuser-Busch. After starting his career in a California brewpub, Mitch eventually wound up in St. Louis towards the end of the 20th century on a skunkworks-style R&D team tasked with brewing up answers to those pesky “microbrews” that would somehow satisfy distributors in the mighty red network, the American drinking public, and August Busch the Third himself — no mean feat. Would creative extensions on the premium Michelob line do the trick? What about a new brand named for A-B's hop farm in northern Idaho? You'll have to listen on to find out. Tilray to buy 4 breweries from MolsonCoors.Big beer news this week (or is it Big Beer news?) with weed warrior Tilray buying 4 breweries from MolsonCoors. Included in that sale is our beloved Terrapin Beer Co. If my math is right this will bring 15 breweries under the Tilray brand, plus some distilleries and cideries. Per Brewbound, the move will make them the #4 largest craft brewery on the Brewers Association's ranking. On the flip side of that coin, Monster Beverage is doing terrible. They posted a nearly 32% sales decline YoY. As we've seen with their huge layoffs and changes at Cigar City, they haven't shown much skill in being brewery owners.Tough news for hop farmers in the Pacific Northwest as they announce a loss of acreage this year due to the declining craft beer market. They took a 12% loss last year as well. The domino effect of craft beer impacts so many more people and businesses than just brewers and breweries. Some fun news for our friends at Athletic Brewing as they announced a partnership with English football club Arsenal to be their official non-alcoholic beer partner, the first for Arsenal. Good for them.In the realm of Bro Science we discuss how ABV impacts hydration and what you can do to mitigate the negative effects. We made it through the holiday weekend unscathed and are almost done with this short work week.  Nice.On this week's show we recap Brian and Nate's trips to Florida and the beer they got into on their travels.  Smalls and I stayed here but Smalls threw a party so we had some grilled meats and beers with friends and then I binged the rest of Ted Lasso.I sip on a new Scofflaw brew called Hop Shatter.  Here's what the brewery has to say about the beer.Originally brewed for the 2023 Craft Brewers Conference, this potent IPA showcase CGX Cryogenic Lupulin Pellets, jam-packed with resins and oils for Flavor and Aroma and less environmental impact and production waste. Featuring Motueka CGX, Amarillo CGX, and Cashmere T-90 for notes of zesty citrus, with a touch of floral, white grape, and fresh berries.Interesting. Very tasty beer, too.We discuss Sima, also known as Finnish Spring Mead.  It's a very low alcohol beverage brewed for May Day festival, known as Vappu in Finland.  Brian tried a commercial take on the style this weekend but it's also a very easy one to brew at home.A bill is up to allow shipping alcohol by USPS.  We won't get too excited for that just yet as it's been talked about before, but we'll see.  Brewers are buying their breweries back from Big Beer.  Quite the turn of events, I wonder if we'll see more of it?And the monks are really sick of people reselling their beer and they're cracking down.  If you go to the Netherlands and buy a Trappist ale at a convenience store don't be surprised when a bunch of guys in robes come after you.  You've been warned. The Beers of the Week are....Deadwords Brewing - Timberline Pacific Northwest IPABeer Zombies - Zombie Duck Hunter (WC IPA)J. Wakefield - UJP Porter (Smoked English-style Porter)The Seed: A Living Beer Project - Moments (Ordinary Bitter style Ale)Eighth State - Coating Consistency (Imp Stout w/ toasted coconut, almond, walnut, and 5 *different* vanillas)Scofflaw Hop Shatter Hazy IPAThanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! With the recent rash of beer commercials insulting the companies' own customers in order to score cheap political points, it's reasonable to ask what's going on. Traditional economics holds that companies are profit-maximizing entities, so why are Bud Light and Miller Lite still willing to virtue-signal when it comes at the cost of boycotts and plummeting stock prices? Matt Kibbe and Jennifer Sey, former brand president for Levi's, discuss how the impact of ESG scores has altered the behavior of corporations that now believe that being “on the right side of history” is more important than making good products and serving customers.
