Send us a textEpisode SummaryIf you've ever questioned your faith, struggled with loss, or felt the weight of expectations, this episode is for you.Key TakeawaysLarry Camp's journey reflects a deep connection to music and family.Mental health discussions are crucial in high-demand religious settings.Personal growth often comes from questioning /clarifying beliefs. High-demand religions often create an image that members feel pressured to maintain.Women in Mormonism face significant limitations due to patriarchal structures.Community support is crucial for those who leave religious groups.Human connection fosters hope and resilience.Coping with faith and loss requires empathy and understanding.Engaging in fun activities is essential for well-being.Curiosity and learning are vital for personal growth. In this powerful episode of Even Tacos Fall Apart, Larry Camp opens up about his life, his journey with the Mormon faith, and how leaving it shaped his mental health. A lifelong lover of music, sports, and Hawaii, Larry's story is filled with twists and turns that reflect resilience and the importance of forging your own path.Raised in a devout Mormon family, Larry embraced the religion's demanding lifestyle, including serving a two-year mission and adhering to the strict rules. Larry explained how the church's high expectations and guilt-driven culture often take a toll on mental health, especially for women, who are frequently subjected to intense judgment and impossible standards. One of the most moving parts of the interview came when Larry discussed the loss of his son, Dusty, in 2018. This devastating event, coupled with his departure from the Mormon Church, tested his resilience and emotional strength. He credited his wife of 44 years, Judy, as his rock during this challenging period. Larry candidly shared how the family coped and how his other son, Crosby, continues to struggle with Dusty's death.Larry also reflected on the beauty and challenges of living in Hawaii. Though he adored the Aloha spirit, the financial reality of life on the islands eventually led him and Judy to settle in Southern Utah. His passion for music, sports, and storytelling remains central to his life, as evidenced by his own podcast Nobody Knows Your Story, where he explores the richness of human experiences.Throughout the conversation, Larry stressed the value of community—both in and out of religion. He also shared a poignant insight about personal growth: “You can't change the past, but you can always aim to do better moving forward.”This episode is a heartfelt reminder that mental health journeys are rarely straightforward, but with the right people in your corner and a willingness to seek truth, healing is always possible. Whether you're grappling with faith, loss, or life's uncertainties, Larry's story offers wisdom, humor, and hope for finding peace on your own terms.Invictus - William Ernest HenleyOut of the night that covers me,Black as the pit from pole to pole,I thank whatever gods may beFor my unconquerable soul.In the fell clutch of circumstanceI have not winced nor cried aloud.Under the bludgeoning's of chanceMy head is bloody, but unbowed.Beyond this place of wrath and tearsLooms but the Horror of the shade,And yet the menace of the yearsFinds and shall find me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate,How charged with punishments the scroll,I am the master of my fate,I am the captain of my soul.

When Mike Rypka launched Torchy's Tacos out of a trailer in Austin, he wasn't thinking about private equity or market expansion. He just wanted to serve “damn good tacos.” Fast forward to today, and Torchy's has grown into a revered fast-casual chain with national ambitions, fueled by strategic investment and a fiercely loyal customer base. But the real engine behind the brand's success isn't just craveable food. It's culture. Torchy's differentiates itself through scratch-made food and a willingness to take creative risks with its menu. Behind the scenes is a deeply human company culture built around second chances, internal growth and genuine care for employees. In this episode, Mike opens up about the humble beginnings of the company, how word of mouth and grassroots marketing initially drove Torchy's success and why “clean, craveable food” keeps the customers coming back. He also explains why it was critical to find an investment partner that provided not just capital, but deep operational and consumer insights, and how his personal struggles shaped a company culture rooted in redemption and opportunity. Show notes: 0:25: Interview: Mike Rypka, Founder, Torchy's Tacos – Mike reflects on the early days of Torchy's Tacos and how it gradually evolved into a beloved taco chain with over 130 locations. He highlights the importance of quality, consistency, and culture in differentiating Torchy's from competitors, especially through their scratch-made food, full-service bars, and commitment to hospitality. Mike explains why he recently transitioned into the role of Chief Innovation Officer, how the company attempts to sell affordable food despite economic pressures and why Torchy's has resisted franchising in favor of maintaining tight operational control. He also talks about the importance of strong supplier relationships, transparency, and how deliberate growth has helped Torchy's preserve its identity and quality. Mike discusses how private equity firm General Atlantic has helped strategically guide the company's national expansion, how Torchy's innovation process blends customer feedback, social media listening and culinary trend tools and why not every idea has succeeded. Brands in this episode: Torchy's Tacos, Athletic Brewing

The moment your Amazon conversion rate drops by half is when true brand resilience is tested. In this tactical deep-dive, we examine a real-world crisis where one premium brand watched their conversion rate collapse virtually overnight, triggering a cascade of mounting problems: skyrocketing ad costs, plummeting impression share, and rapidly declining sales across their entire catalog. For brands heavily dependent on advertising—particularly those with a 60/40 or greater split favoring ad-driven sales over organic—these conversion crises hit especially hard. The downward spiral accelerates as reduced conversion forces bid reductions, leading to fewer impressions, fewer clicks, and ultimately, a severe drop in revenue and profitability. We walk through the comprehensive troubleshooting process: examining your metrics funnel from impressions through click-through rate to conversion; determining exactly when the drop occurred; analyzing what changes (if any) preceded it; and the challenging reality that sometimes there is no clear "smoking gun" to blame. Amazon's platform complexity means the true cause could be algorithmic changes, competitor actions, or other factors completely invisible to sellers. Most valuably, we reveal the surprisingly powerful price lever that many premium brands underestimate. Through careful margin analysis, our guest discovered they could reduce prices by 20% while maintaining healthy 30% contribution margins—because when properly calculated, the compounding benefits of improved click-through, conversion, and advertising efficiency often outweigh the perceived margin sacrifice. Learn how referral fee reductions, TACOS improvements, and sales velocity increases can transform what seems like a crisis into an opportunity for brand strengthening.Whether you're currently facing a conversion crisis or preparing for the inevitable day when one strikes your business, this episode provides both immediate tactical responses and strategic frameworks to not just survive the challenge but emerge stronger on the other side. Have you experienced a sudden conversion drop? We'd love to hear your story and solutions.

Long before founding Torchy's Tacos, Mike Rypka was a troubled teenager trying to outrun his own self-destruction. Growing up around addiction and falling into heavy drug use himself, Mike's future looked bleak—until he got clean and found refuge in kitchens. Cooking gave him structure, purpose, and eventually, a career. After years working in restaurants and corporate kitchens, Mike decided to take a risk on something smaller: a food truck on a street corner in Austin. In 2006, he launched Torchy's with nothing but a dream, a fiery logo, and a menu full of bold flavors. That humble truck became the start of something much bigger. Today, Torchy's is a national chain with more than 130 locations and annual sales topping $300 million. And through all of it, Mike has remained sober—more than three decades and counting. This episode was produced by Carla Esteves and edited by Kevin Leahy, with research by Katherine Sypher and music by Ramtin Arablouei.
