Brewers Association (BA) president and CEO Bart Watson entered the Brewbound Podcast studio last week fresh off stage from giving his State of the Industry speech at the 2025 Craft Brewers Conference (CBC). Watson discussed key takeaways from his speech, including why the 4% volume decline for craft last year wasn't everyone's experience, as 43% of craft breweries found growth last year. “You can have a number where yes, the middle it is negative, but there's still lots of people on the positive side,” Watson explained during a conversation with Brewbound's Jess Infante and Justin Kendall on the Brewbound Podcast. Watson also discussed why the growing number of closures has hit the long-tail of craft breweries – those making fewer than 500 barrels of beer – the hardest. “Running a small business is hard,” Watson said. “They're just on the smallest line of, ‘OK, the landlord changes the rent when our lease is up.' … Main Street gets torn up because the city is doing construction. It disrupts our traffic.' “A 2,000-barrel brewery is going to have resources and options to weather that; a 500-barrel brewery might not,” he continued. “Those are members that we're trying to think about how we help, how we drive foot traffic and what we can do to improve their conditions.” The conversation touches on several topics, including: How the BA is advocating for its members with the Trump administration in Washington, D.C., and why it's important for brewery owners to connect with lawmakers; Why full-strength spirits are being added to the Great American Beer Festival and how that's manifesting in a way to support BA members; Whether the event could move away from Denver in the future; Why there is a perception versus reality issue with consumers when it comes to the flavors that craft offers beyond IPA; And his overall read on the vibe of CBC. Ahead of the interview, the Brewbound team also discusses recent headlines, including Rhinegeist's NA beer venture and Tilray CEO Irwin Simon's honest thoughts on the company's stock price. Plus, the team plays Another Round or Tabbing Out on the commercialization of B.O.R.G.s, and Zoe dishes on her motorsport adventures.

Next month the Craft Brewers Conference and BrewExpo America takes place in Indianapolis. From April 28th to 1st May, America's largest gathering for the beverage alcohol industry will bring together countless figures from across the drinks sectors. And for Ann Obenchain, she lovingly likens it to a 'taproom on steroids'. Because as we all know, such events are the perfect opportunity to learn, and to reconnect. Ann Obenchain is the vice president of marketing and communications for the Brewers Association. Here she develops and leads the strategic direction of the association's marketing and communications activities, and serves as spokesperson with the media for events, including the Great American Beer Festival, Craft Brewers Conference & BrewExpo America, World Beer Cup, and Homebrew Con. In this podcast, we discuss that a time why it is more important than ever to engage with our consumers, our peers and the wider industry. The latest trends taking hold across the USA, why diversification remains key and by taking a little time out of our taprooms, events such as CBC and BrewExpo America represent the perfect opportunity to partake in a taproom environment of a different kind.

From their tiny outpost in the ski town of Park City, Offset Bier (https://offsetbier.com) has turned Utah's challenges—such as a ban on serving draft beer higher than 5 percent ABV—into opportunities. Last year was a breakout one for the budding brewery—we named their session IPA Dopo one of our Best 20 Beers in 2024 (https://beerandbrewing.com/the-best-20-beers-in-2024), while another session IPA, Divi, won gold medal at Great American Beer Festival. Necessity is truly the mother of invention, and the constraints placed upon founder Conor Brown force creative problem solving, as he pulls from various corners of the brewing playbook—European lager and hefeweizen, British ale, and more—for processes and creative angles that drive flavorful, aroma-led hazy LIPAs, or “Lie-PAs.” In this episode, Brown covers: mash steps to promote foam-positive proteins and body in hazy IPAs made from 100 percent barley malt dialing in water chemistry with calcium targets, sodium, and sulfate more than chloride using chit malt in lieu of oats or wheat, and selecting low-FAN pilsner malt embracing small amounts of crystal malts managing DMS reduction at altitude the benefit of boiling hops with longer additions creating texture through hop choices such as American Nobles developing exacting pH targets at each stage of the brewing process And more. In today's episode, we talk with Lucia Carrillo—founder and head brewer at Cervecería Itañeñe in Mexico City, a very small brewery that's big on flavor, often using ingredients from Mexican culinary traditions, or even endemic to the country—and her partner Rodrigo Romo, who also brews at Itañeñe and works at Tout Chocolat making craft chocolate bars and bon bons, pastries, and coffee at its cafes in the Mexico City area. Rodrigo and Lucia have worked together on beers and chocolates that use similar ingredients—including flavors and ingredients endemic to Mexican ecology or used in Mexican culinary traditions—as well as beers using chocolate or its ingredients, or chocolates using beer or its ingredients, to blur the lines between these worlds.I first tried one of Itañeñe's beers at the Great Mexican Beer Fiesta at Cervecería Colorado in Denver, several years ago. The one-day fest takes place during the Great American Beer Festival at the same time, and it's my favorite part of GABF week. Cervecería Colorado and Itañeñe had collaborated on a beer brewed with rosita de cacao, a flower unrelated to theobroma cacao, but sharing some cocoa-like flavors. This past fall I had the privilege of being a judge at Copa Cerveza Mexico, and finally got to meet Lucia and Rodrigo. Later in the trip, I walked to Tout's beautiful Hippodrome location and sat at an outdoor cafe table enjoying a flat white and several of their excellent bon bons.I had the chance to talk with Lucia and Rodrigo recently about their pursuit of unique flavors, their chocolate and beer collaborations, and what makes Mexican beer and chocolate unique and exciting. At the outset, I asked how they got involved in these worlds in the first place.Guests:Lucia Carrillo—Food engineer, beer judge, sommelier, sensory panel judge, and Itañeñe brewer with more than 50 beer medals.Rodrigo Romo—Itañeñe brewer, pastry chef, winner of the Sweet Arts competition, chocolatier, and winner of more than 30 beer medals. Steve Luke, founder and head brewer of Seattle's Cloudburst Brewing, joins Taplines today for a freewheeling conversation about an iconic moment — arguably, the iconic moment — of the 2018 Great American Beer Festival, which he single-handedly engineered both literally and figuratively with the help of a DIY t-shirt that read “F*CK AB-INBEV” across the front. There's a backstory there, more so than the standard David vs. Goliath dynamic that was popular to describe the relationship between craft brewers and macro brewers last decade. Taylor, the first Democrat in decades to hold the office, has focused on mental health, human trafficking, and gang issues, replacing the controversial 287(g) immigration program. He aims to continue these reforms if re-elected. Baker, a former deputy featured on "Live PD," criticizes Taylor's handling of deputy retention and morale. He pledges to reinstate the Jail Dogs program and improve crime-fighting collaboration with other agencies, emphasizing public safety and crime reduction. STORY 2: A Sweet Time: Sugar Rush Arts Festival Set To Entertain This Weekend The Sugar Rush Arts Festival in Sugar Hill promises a fun-filled weekend with over 100 vendors, live music, and activities for kids. The event kicks off Friday night with the Nightmare On Broad Street Film Festival and a free concert featuring Mixtape and Gimme Springsteen. We'll be right back Break 2: Tom Wages STORY 4: A Gwinnett fire truck hit was responding to an accident in Duluth. Then it was hit at the scene A Gwinnett County fire engine crew responded to a car accident at Buford Highway and Davenport Road, only for their fire truck to be sideswiped by another vehicle while they were assisting at the scene. This incident unfolded right in front of the Duluth Police Department Headquarters, adding to the chaos. The initial crash happened when a vehicle made a left turn in front of another. Fortunately, no firefighters were injured, but the intersection was temporarily closed, causing traffic delays as first responders managed the scene. STORY 5: There are 20 legislative races on the ballot in Gwinnett In the upcoming November 5 election, about two-thirds of Gwinnett County's legislative seats are contested. Out of 31 seats in the Georgia General Assembly, 20 are up for grabs. Key races include State Senate District 48, where indicted incumbent Shawn Still faces Ashwin Ramaswami, and House District 105, with Farooq Mughal against Sandy Donatucci. Notable unopposed candidates include Chuck Efstration and Arlene Beckles. The election features several races with significant implications, such as those involving Gwinnett's Muslim legislators and efforts to shift district political balances. Break 3: STORY 6: TOP PRIORITIES: Gwinnett Candidates Talk Public Safety and Affordable Housing The Gwinnett County Commission District 1 race highlights key issues like public safety and housing affordability. Incumbent Democrat Kirkland Carden emphasizes crime reduction, while Republican Tim Le focuses on housing costs. The election could shift control of the commission, with three seats, including the chair and Districts 1 and 3, up for grabs. Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson and her opponent John Sabic debate housing and development strategies. In District 3, Jasper Watkins III and Bobby Howard prioritize public safety and fiscal responsibility. The outcomes will influence the commission's approach to these critical issues. STORY 7: Buford Reunion: Texas WR Isaiah Bond, Georgia DB K.J. Bolden Meet Saturday In the upcoming college football clash between No. 1 Texas and No. 5 Georgia, Texas' offensive success may depend on junior receiver Isaiah Bond's health. Bond, a key player with 369 yards and three touchdowns this season, is questionable due to an ankle injury. Georgia coach Kirby Smart acknowledges Bond's explosive talent, noting his speed and agility. If Bond plays, he might face former Buford teammate K.J. Bolden, a freshman defensive back for Georgia with impressive stats. Bond previously played at Alabama and was a standout at Buford High, while Bolden is a five-star prospect with a strong high school record. We'll have final thoughts after this. Natalie Cilurzo Natalie Cilurzo is back on Brew Ha Ha with Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras. Russian River Brewing Co. is celebrating 20 years in Santa Rosa and 6 years at the Windsor location. The special beer called Pliny for President 2024 is back. Pliny has been running for president every time around since they opened the brewpub. They have quarterly releases of Pliny for President, so this is the last batch until 2028. The beer is very hop forward, featuring Simcoe, Amarillo, Citra, Zumo and Nectaron hops. Pliny is the candidate of the Keg Party. Vinny is known as the Hopfather, and also for his Belgian-inspired sour, barrel aged beers. He grew up in a winery in Temecula where his parents planted the first wine grapes in 1968. He grew up in the vineyard and in the cellar and on the bottling line. Intinction This beer called Intinction, which is dipping bread into wine. It is almost like a Lambrusco, red and bubbly. The grapes are Petite Syrah, which is a dark grape and gives a dark color. The ABV is high because it went through 2 fermentations, it is 10.26%. It won a bronze medal at the Great American Beer Festival. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. They are installing some new equipment for CO2 recovery from their closed top cylindrical fermentation tanks which will reduce their need to purchase CO2. They also have a wastewater treatment plant. The purple pipes carry this water which is treated water and is used for landscaping. They built their Windsor facility with dual plumbing, so they are ready to make the switch to the purple pipes when the regulations catch up to the new law. Shadow of a Doubt beer is named after the Alfred Hitchcock film which was shot in 1943 in Santa Rosa. The beer is a dark imperial porter. A local graphic designer designed the label. Tonight at dusk they are showing the movie in the beer garden in Windsor.

Brewers Association VP of marketing and communications Ann Obenchain joins this week's Brewbound Podcast to discuss how the trade group reimagined the Great American Beer Festival (GABF). The refreshed GABF takes place Thursday through Saturday in Denver, and attendees should expect a more experiential feel this year, Obenchain explained. She acknowledged that past GABF events were nearly indistinguishable in look with the blue and yellow color scheme and lines of booths serving beer. For 2024, the geographic or alphabetical lineup of booths are gone, replaced with six experiential areas and a product lineup that goes beyond beer to include cider, hard seltzer, ready-to-drink canned cocktails and more, Obenchain said. The meet-the-brewer area returns, but this year's GABF will lean into the season with a Halloween-themed area called “Fright” that will include scare actors, decorations and giant LED inflatables, and a section called “Prost” with Oktoberfest vibes, including a biergarten, stein-holding contests and German oom-pah bands. Other areas include “Score,” with live sports played on televisions and foosball; “Blast Off,” a space-themed area; and “Chill,” with live music. Adding to the experience will be Lucha Libre, the pro wrestling style originated in Mexico starring masked wrestlers. All of this is aimed at appealing to younger, experience-seeking attendees who have been the majority of GABF goers in recent years, Obenchain said. The goal is to keep them coming back and get them interested in craft beer. She added that over the last seven years, GABF attendees have skewed younger, with the majority of attendees in the key 21- to 34-year-old demographic. Obenchain also discusses the addition of beyond beer offerings to the GABF lineup; the Paired add-on, beer-and-food pairing event; and what's new with the GABF Awards.

As we plan our 11th year of covering the Great American Beer Festival out in Denver, we take this episode to preview some of the Illinois beers pouring at the fest while sharing a comprehensive list of which breweries we're most amped to check out. We review the Illinois pour lists, find many exciting “new-to-us” breweries, revisit some “familiar face” breweries, and put our total faith in those “steady hands” that still crank out essential beers. Also, we discuss t-shirts that aren't exactly getting the joke across, point out one style that Illinois has dominated as of late, embody both “High” and “Stinky,” and get punished by one beer in particular. Learn how Old Irving became so successful, it needed to open a new production facility — and what went into the expansion. 02:18 Beer Myth: When brewing sour beers, is kettle souring lazy? Katherine has some HOT TAKES about this, and Trevor from Old Irving Brewing Co. explains the science behind what actually creates sour beers. Discover the facts behind this common misconception and learn how kettle souring is a legitimate and skillful method that produces some of the best-tasting sours. Bonus: learn how a “West Coast Pilsner” is different from a regular Pilsner and what it has to do with a thing known as a Cold IPA. 10:08 NAME OF BREWERY: Old Irving Brewing Co. Head Brewer and Co-Founder Trevor Rose-Hamblin shares the back story of his move from restauranteur to brewer, including an appearance on BrewDog that led to him brewing in Scotland for 3 months. Trevor also explains how after just 2 years of development, his Citra & Mosaic hopped Hazy IPA Beezer won a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 2019 and another gold at the World Beer Cup in Las Vegas in 2024 (both in the Hazy IPA category). After the beer break, Trevor and Brian crack open a Della, which won a silver medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 2021 in the German-Style Kölsch category. Della is a Kölsch-Style Ale brewed with high-quality Pilsner, a touch of Vienna malt, and lightly hopped with Zuper Saazer, Hallertau Mittelfrüh, & Tettnang. Trevor also talks about Old Irving's new brewing facility, what compelled them to move into a new facility, and the craft beer community in Chicago that helped spur their growth. Brian also coaxes Trevor into doing his hilarious impersonation of one of his Chicago craft beer community colleagues (but you'll have to listen to find out which one!). 58:35 Beer Behavior: How does scarcity work when it comes to beer? Does it drive sales even when it's obviously manufactured? Brian talks about how Wisconsin breweries were featured during a recent convention and Katherine presents her “barbecue festival philosophy” of scarcity. Leah Scurto and Herlinda Heras. Leah Scurto from Pizzaleah joins Herlinda Heras and Harry Duke who is sitting in for Steve Jaxon on Brew Ha Ha today. Herlinda Heras is back from another trip to Liverpool, this time to see Pete Best and his band. Leah Scurto is Herlinda's neighbor and friend. This is her first time on Brew Ha Ha but she was a guest on our other podcast, California Wine Country, on this CWC episode of April 27, 2022. In that show we hear about how Leah was getting ready to serve pizzas at the 2022 Healdsburg Wine and Food Experience. Herlinda brought Leah into beer judging. Leah will be cooking at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, CO, in October later this year. “They get the best of the best of the chefs, paired up with breweries.” It's Leah's fourth year doing it. Leah's partner this year is a brewery from Iowa called Big Grove, which is the official craft brewer of the Iowa Hawkeyes, check out their website^. Big Grove making a double IPA and an Oktoberfest for the Great American Beer Fest. Leah is cooking for Thursday and Friday nights. To pair with the double IPA she will make pickles with that brew, then make a pickle dip. She will make a mushroom pizza to go with the Oktoberfest. Pizzaleah in Windsor, near Oliver's Pizzaleah is located in Windsor near Oliver's, at 9240 Old Redwood Hwy, #116. Their beer list includes a tap where she rotates local brewers in and out. Right now there is a beer from Ghost Town in Oakland. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. Leah has brought some pizzas including the Old Graybeard which is the people's favorite. It's a sweet, spicy and salty with a little orange zest. They make their own sausage for the pizzas. Everything is in-house including the peperoni which is a recipe that Leah worked on for years. They pair that pizza with the Old Caz Free Craig's. Leah participates in international pizza competitions This summer she was at the Caputo Cup in Naples. Caputo is a brand of flour from Naples and they put on the pizza festival and the competition. Leah placed third! See our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. When Leah needed a job in Santa Cruz in college, she got hired at a pizza shop where she eventually stayed for more then 2 decades. She opened 20 restaurants for them so she sure knows the business. She opened her restaurant about four years ago and survived the pandemic as the first order of business. It happened to be just as the pandemic was closing everyone down. She weathered the storm by being available for delivery at a time when that was the only way to get food to the people. The beer selection at Pizzaleah is important to Leah. She wants to support local brewers by featuring their products and also whenever possible she tries to support small local suppliers and organic production. The Lola pizza, with pesto, potato and caramelized onion, is paired with the Crispy Crusher from Cooperage.

This is part one of the podcast of their live radio show, featuring Renée DeLuca with Herlinda Heras and Steve Jaxon. In part two of the podcast, Don Barkley joins them in the studio. That episode is right here.
Brewing is famously a science and an art. There are loads of technical aspects a skilled brewer should nail down to create something special, but there's also a point where you just have to give up some autonomy. Or, at least accept it's OK to play a little for some R&D. One of the most important things people in American craft beer have learned in recent years is how this also applies to their customers. A diverse menu that may expand beyond just beer is becoming table stakes and creativity in what kind of styles and flavor experiences you offer—in or outside of beer—can matter more than ever. You can control your taplist, but you also have to be flexible to what you hear and learn from people sitting at your bar. In this episode, we explore this idea and what it means to grow a business and expectations with Kevin and Britt Templin of Salt Lake City, Utah's Templin Family Brewing, also known simply as TF Brewing. Since opening in 2018, TF Brewing has become known for its lager program, including its award-winning flagship, Granary kellerbier. The brewery has also earned recognition at the World Beer Cup, where in 2024 it won gold medals for its coconut-guava berliner weisse and Squirrel Juicy IPA. There are other medals from the Great American Beer Festival and WBC, but that hasn't stopped Britt, Kevin, and their team from expanding their menu and listening to what customers are telling them they're interested in drinking. The science of their beers has been stellar and the art of refining what that means for drinkers continues to evolve. You'll hear us talk about what it takes to feel OK about making these changes—which for TF Brewing has included a new wine program and successful cocktail menu—along with what it means to be a growing brewery in 2024. The value the Templins place on their staff and how those people help the brewery succeed is high. By the time this conversation wraps, you'll have an understanding of how “family” isn't just in the name of the business, but how they want to make people feel. Even in that, there's a science to running a brewery that's a business, but an art to creating a space that promotes imagination, community, and closeness.
The definition of “local” can be quite different when the nearest urban regions are hundreds of miles away. That's certainly the case in Jackson, Wyoming, where (quote-unquote) neighboring cities like Boise, Idaho; Denver, Colorado; and Bozeman, Montana all require a few hours in the car, if not on a plane, to get there. But it's precisely that sense of remote grandeur that attracts millions of visitors to the Jackson Hole region every year. Where do they go when they want a good, local, craft brew? To Snake River Brewing Company, of course, which is the oldest operating brewery in the state and celebrates 30 years in business in 2024. In this episode, Snake River's director of sales and marketing, Luke Bauer, describes what brought him to Wyoming nearly 20 years ago, and what kept him coming back after working in Texas, Alaska, and Colorado. In addition to his role at Snake River, he's also on the board of the Wyoming Craft Brewers Guild, and shares a first-hand account of how the state's craft beer industry has grown, changed, and evolved, especially post-pandemic. By his account, Wyoming is a unique place, but also one that's full of surprises. He believes there's a lot more experimentation than outsiders might initially expect from the local beer scene, and explains the big differences in style from one side of the state to the other. (Hint: one side sticks more to traditional or maltier beers, while the other embraces trendier styles like IPAs.) Snake River Brewing has managed to rack up awards at the World Beer Cup, including their most recent Bronze medal for Zonker Stout, as well as at the Great American Beer Festival, and many more over its 30-year tenure. It goes back to their mission statement: “The world doesn't need another beer, but a better beer.” Let's hear about the beer and beyond.

Alarmist Brewing's hilarious Gary Gulley brings an engineer's lens to brewing and nerds out about cask ales, clear hazies, and what customers really want. 01:27 Beer Myth: Are cask ales all flat? What is a cask ale, anyway? Gary explains what makes a cask ale a cask ale and the role carbonation plays in it. If you've never heard of a firkin, spile, cast breather, or cask wedge, then you'll walk away with a better understanding of them as only an engineer could provide. Plus: should you drink what's on cask while in the UK? 08:15 Alarmist Brewing Interview: Gary Gulley, owner and founder of Alarmist Brewing, shares why he's passionate about beer and how his former career as a civil engineer prepared him for a career as a full-time brewer. He talks about his experience learning about homebrewing while working at a nuclear power plant, Coors Party Balls, and how his growing appreciation for beer led him to found Alarmist. Gary also shares the story of how his Le Jus became the first-ever Hazy IPA to win a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival and how Alarmist developed other award-winning beers including Pantsless, Bronze Medal Winner for American Pale Ale in 2020, and Midwest Royalty, Bronze Medal Winner for American Style Lager in 2021 and 2022. After sampling some beers, Gary explains the difference between two-row and six-row malts and how they impact the “grainy” flavor of certain beers. He also breaks down the difference between pale ales, American pales, and IPAs, in terms of both hops and bitterness, and what happens when you put lactose in beer. Gary and Katherine also explain why beer recipes “change all the time” and how that can sometimes lead to happy accidents in brewing. Some people know early on they're destined to be their own boss. Rachael Hudson is one of these people. She's the co-owner and head brewer at Pilot Brewing Company in Charlotte, North Carolina, a small brewery that's made big waves in her local scene and beyond since opening in 2018. Since then, the business has racked up accolades at the Great American Beer Festival, the US Open Beer Championship, and the North Carolina Brewers Cup Competition, including being named North Carolina Brewery of the Year for 2023. But for as nice as the awards are, Rachael says opening a brewery isn't about fame (and it's definitely not about money). It's more about being an outlet for her ability and desire to teach curious consumers about what it is they're consuming. She's an Advanced Cicerone who plans to take the Master exam again later this year, as well as a national and international beer judge and co-host of the False Bottomed Girls podcast with Master Cicerone Jen Blair. Needless to say, she knows what she's talking about, and she's passionate about sharing her knowledge with absolutely anyone who will listen. In this episode, Rachael shares when and how she knew she had to go into business for herself and why education is such a critical part of what Pilot offers to the community. She also talks about her “less is more” mentality when it comes to recipe development, and how their ESB tends to outshine even their IPAs. Pilot probably isn't going to get much bigger, but that's not what Rachael wants anyway. She'd rather focus on perfecting what they put out and keep figuring out ways to show other people that they too can turn their passion into a profession.

You've heard the joke—four scientists walk into a bar, and hilarity ensues. But have you heard the one about a few NASA employees opening a brewery? It's not a setup. It's how True Anomaly Brewing Company in Houston, Texas actually started, when four friends and homebrewers decided to trade in the final frontier for a shot at making their own beer. Michael Duckworth is co-founder and CEO of True Anomaly, which was recently named Brewery of the Year at the Texas Craft Brewers Cup for the second year in a row. Now in their sixth year, True Anomaly specializes in making wild and sour beers, but in a lager-focused state like Texas, they brew plenty of clean beers as well. They've been recognized for both with medal wins in competitions like the World Beer Cup and Great American Beer Festival. And now, they're preparing to open a much larger second location later this year, which you'll hear about, and plan to up their output from around 1,200 barrels to around 2,000 by the end of 2024. All this begs the question: how did a bunch of NASA nerds pull this off? Well, according to Michael, the four founders took a methodical, scientific approach to the business plan and applied an artistic sensibility to making the beers themselves. Wild beer can be unpredictable, but it's that freedom from expectation he says makes each day a fun and unique surprise. In this episode, he also talks about the potential he sees in the Houston craft beverage scene, why they implemented inclusivity as part of their operations from day one, and why you might see an astronaut or two hanging around the brewery on the weekends.
Fluffernutter and Oreo Marshmallow pastry stouts. Kettle sours brewed with "obscene amounts" of fruit. A cream cheese rangoon gose. Depending on your level of curiosity and adventurousness, these beers may sound exciting or challenging, but they also have two things in common: They've been made by Colorado's WeldWerks Brewing and they're fun beers made with serious intent. In this episode, we get into some of the technical ideas, philosophies, and search for dialed-in joy with Skip Schwartz, WeldWerks' head brewer and Neil Fisher, founder and owner of the company. What makes brewing and beer fun these days? There are lots of answers, and as you'll hear both explain, it could be from the never-ending tweaks to make a beer as perfect as possible or finding ways to connect with new drinkers who would otherwise turn away from a beer. Some of the more wild beers created by WeldWerks have gotten attention over the years, but it's their flagship hazy IPA, Juicy Bits, that put this brewery on the map and has allowed WeldWerks to expand into 26 different markets this year. The runaway success of Juicy Bits has helped the business gain notoriety beyond Colorado, build out its brewhouse, and set a goal of modest growth as many companies in craft beer are focused on just staying flat with their production. So, maybe you've tried some of WeldWerks' outlandish beers at their taproom or during a major industry event like the Great American Beer Festival, or maybe you've had their signature IPA and one of its variants. Allow Skip and Neil to give you some background on what it means to connect with drinkers today and learn how their approach to beer is setting them up for 2024 and beyond.
There is the East Coast and there is the West Coast, but aficionados of hazy IPA know not to sleep on the Gulf Coast, thanks largely to Parish Brewing (https://parishbeer.com) in Broussard, Louisiana. Parish's Ghost in the Machine has become a juggernaut in the world of hazy IPA, earning accolades such as a 2019 Beer of the Year (https://beerandbrewing.com/the-best-19-beers-of-2019/) from Craft Beer & Brewing and a mention on critic Alex Kidd's top ten list in 2020 (https://beerandbrewing.com/critics-list-alex-kidds-best-in-2020/). More recently, Parish won a spot in the top 20 small regional breweries (https://beerandbrewing.com/best-in-beer-2023-readers-choice-your-favorite-breweries-by-size/) as voted on by the readers of Craft Beer & Brewing Magazine®. Nor is their success limited to IPA—Parish also picked up a silver medal at the 2023 Great American Beer Festival for its top-selling wheat beer, Canebrake. In this episode, head brewer (and Master Cicerone) Ryan Speyrer joins the podcast to discuss the ways they brew their iconic hazy IPAs, touching on: the evolution of Ghost in the Machine, from West Coast to hazy the roles that wheat and oats do (and don't) play in hazy IPA balancing specific hop varieties between whirlpool and dry hop to maximize the expression of each using classic hops such as Cascade along with Simcoe in modern, fruit-forward IPA the importance of extended cold-conditioning And more.
