After having to wait more than two and a half years from the initial tour announcement, Australian audiences finally got to experience the sheer brilliance that is TYR last week when they hit our shores for a run of five shows in five days.Although unfortunately losing Arkona from the planned line-up due to unforseen overseas circumstances, TYR pushed forward with their plans, declaring the show must go on!Existing fans would already be familiar with the Faroese four piece Viking style metal outfit, but for those who have managed to stay sheltered from their brand of sonic warfare let me tell you these shows were nothing short of sensational.Normally HEAVY has to chat with bands before they play their shows in order to help with promotion, but this time we were fortunate enough to have accompanied TYR for most of their run and as such had the chance to speak with them afterwards to get a different viewpoint. We caught up with frontman Heri Joensen on the eve of TYR's final Adelaide show last night."The crowds have been unbelievably good," he enthused of the tour so far. "It's been the dream of my life to play here."One aspect that stood out to me was seeing the crowds sing along to songs written in different languages. While the songs are sung prodimantly in English or Faroese, TYR also uses Norweigian, Icelandic and Danish languages in their music."It's very encouraging that people will go to the lengths of learning the lyrics in different languages," Joensen smiled, "but it also gives me some room to make mistakes (laughs) because if I make a mistake in Faroese nobody nptices. I can just mumble my way through a verse I've completely forgotten!"TYR are commonly refrred to as a folk metal band, but especially after seeing the band live I think that description fails to capture the full scope of their musical output."I think we have a unique sound of our own," Joensen agreed. "I don't think we sound like any other band out there. You can call it folk metal if you like - there's folk music in there, it's based on folk music partly - but it's also based on progressive metal, classic music and ordinary heavy metal, so I don't know. If people need to put a label on it Viking Folk Pagan Metal is the usual one but that doesn't really tell you what the music sounds like (laughs) so it's kind of useless. I'll leave it to the journalists and record label."In the full interview, Heri talks more about the tour, his favourite moments, learning some Australian words (for better or for worse), receiving care packages from fans, their next album and more.Big thanks to Bailey and Overdrive Touring for having HEAVY along for the ride and even bigger thanks to Heri, Gunnar,Tadeusz, Hans and Anton for being such awesome human beings!

“I think the real message of the album is to give hope to everyone, no matter what they are struggling with.” At a time of uncertainty in the world, that is a message which is much needed among fans of music and people in general. We kick off season 4 with Czech artist Viktorie Surmøvá from the band, Surma. Being a young singer in an industry during a pandemic isn't the situation she asked for, but she made the best of the cards that were dealt to her. Teaming up with renowned Faroese guitarist Heri Joensen, Viktorie tells her journey from performing in theater ensembles to singing in a multitude of bands that opened the gateways to form the symphonic metal band, Surma. Now on track to release their debut record, it's another chapter in Viktorie's life that she is very proud to accomplish – though it didn't come easy. Tune in now to this up and coming vocalist who is set to make an impact in the new era of symphonic metal, and make sure to buy/stream Surma's debut studio album “The Light Within” set to unleash November 6th on Metal Blade Records.

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History. My guest this week is Heri Joensen, lead guitarist of the Folk Metal band Týr! Heri and I discussed the importance of keeping his faroe island roots in the music, his cover songs, “By the Light of the Northern Star” celebrating a 10 year anniversary and the writing and recording of the bands new album “Hel” in which Heri explains how his health was on the line from his insane work ethic with writing and playign music and why this album was important for him to take his time writing/recording and releasing. "Hel" is out March 8th on Metal Blade Records! FOLLOW TÝR FACEBOOK // TWITTER // INSTAGRAM // HERI ON YOUTUBE
Since their formation in the late 90s, the Faroese band Tyr has faced a number of obstacles, not the least of which include finding personnel in their sparsely populated country. From their early days as a pagan-hearted progressive metal band to their current seafaring savagery, Heri Joensen and his horde of heathens have held their [...] The post TÝR Frontman HERI JOENSEN on Nazi Fans: “If You Know How to Read, You Know We Do Not Support to the Right Extremists” appeared first on Sonic Perspectives.
We are joined by Heri Joensen of the Faroese metal band Týr. We discuss the mythological and traditional inspirations of the band, themes in Týr's albums, and the importance of mythology in the modern world. Faroese metal band TYR is touring North America, and we catch up with bandleader Heri Joensen during their stop in Portland Oregon. We talk about touring the world, protests on this tour and, of course, theology. As a reminder, we're still raising funds for our next series of podcasts. If you are so inclined, please head on over to our gofundme page and toss a few bucks into the tip jar. And big thanks to those of you who already have.
This week we talk to Tyr frontman Heri Joensen. His band is about ready to tour Europe, but several shows have been cancelled after activists called threats into venues that booked Tyr. Learn why the threats were made, and Joensen's reaction to them. Also, we visit a film noir bus shelter and learn about the Faroe Islands' surprising start to 2018 World Cup qualifying. (not at the same time) If you want to see Heri's video reacting to his cancelled shows, you can see it here.
This week we have a set of surprise guests that we announced last week! I guess that's not really a surprise, huh? It's Eric and Drew from TABPxDSME, in other words The Aurora Borealis Project and Drewsif Stalin's Musical Endeavors! We have a good old time trying to talk about their amazing upcoming album The World Is A Colder Place Now. Well, we try anyway. Since Drew and I are both invested in derailing as much as possible, it goes to different places. I had a great time! Then, we talk about the news of the week. What news of the week? Stuff like Misha of Periphery doing a song for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Heri Joensen of Tyr killing whales and defending his actions, Stereogum's monthly metal roundup, You Bred Raptors playing to an empty venue, then new music or teases towards such by Departe, Saor, Destrage, System of a Down, Anaal Nathrakh, Anciients, Alcest, Negura Bunget, Hannes Grossmann, and Allegaeon. Eden gets pretty mad about the last one!
"Heathen heart. Pagan pride. Faring far. Sword by Side." The opening lines from "Hold The Heathen Hammer High" on Týr's By The Light of the Northern Star album...the band's finest release thus far. According to Heri, wait until we here the next one! While BTLOTNS is Týr at their best, each album is better than the previous release. So what does the future hold for Týr? We can expect more of what we have come to love from the band...their brand of Progressive Viking Folk Metal. While a dvd release is not imminent, frontman Heri is releasing a solo album which should hold over fans until the next Týr album in 2011, even if it will be a different style of Metal. Now if only we could convince Kári to release a solo album. Myself and Assistant Metal Director/Turn It Up host Jim Alvino joined Týr members Heri Joensen (vocals/guitar) and Kári Streymoy (drums) on the band's tour bus before their show as direct support for Korpiklaani in Worcester, MA.
