Interview by Kris PetersBilled as an Indian folk metal outfit, Bloodywood are a band much more than that. They are an amalgamation of hard rock and metal, mixed with traditional Indian elements, who create a sound comfortingly similar but also fresh, new and exciting. While the folk metal element is there, labelling them as such is doing the band a disservice musically.Bloodywood first landed on the world's sonic radar with the single Ari Ari in 2018, a Punjabi folk song made famous in the early 2000s remix boom in India by hip-hop act Bombay Rockers. The band pushed it further with help from the gritty New Delhi-based conscious hip-hop artist/rapper Raoul Kerr, offering a cultural musical alternative to the mainstream acts that were dominating the charts.Since then, Bloodywood have taken the world by storm, with their debut album Rakshak solidifying the band's growing reputation.Bloodywood have been on the road pretty much ever since, performing to packed crowds and at major global festivals, including Lollapalooza India, Download Festival, Bloodstock (UK), Hellfest (France), Summer Breeze (Germany), Brutal Assault (Czechia), Fuji Rock (Japan) and American mainstays like Louder Than Life and Aftershock.Their sophomore album Nu Delhi came out on March 21 this year, marking a new landmark in the band's short history and proving emphatically that Bloodywood are more than just a metal band from India. They are now a world-class band in their own right.HEAVY spoke with vocalist Jayant Bhadula to get the rundown."Very, very well," he smiled when we asked how the album has been received. "In terms of numbers, it's doing very good, but in terms of people showing up for the shows and singing our lyrics back from the new album, it's a great thing to see. Honestly, as an artis,t the greatest level of validation I can see is when people are singing your lyrics for you, especially the ones that are not in the language as well."We ask what Bloodywood were going for musically on Nu Delhi."In terms of music, we tried to represent the sense of New Delhi where we come from," he mused. "It is a very realistic and metal city where we come from. If you give it love you will get love 100 times back but just like we say in the album, if you fuck around you won't be found and that is what we were trying to capture. That is why this album is more in your face rather than being as subtle as the last one."In the full interview we talked more about Nu Delhi, Bloodywood's collaboration with Babymetal and how it came about, the cultural dynamics present in their music, blending Eastern and Western cultures together musically and how difficult that is to do, how Nu Delhi differs musically from Rakshak, being labelled as a folk metal band and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersIn just ten short years Melbourne musical powerhouse Valhalore have entrenched themselves as a vital cog in the growing Australian music industry, their unique blending of melodic death metal with power and symphonic elements - infused with folk influences - has resonated with audiences both domestically and abroad.Over the years they have toured with the likes of Alestorm, Arch Enemy, Blind Guardian and HammerFall, winning over legions of fans along the way with their attitude and work ethic. With the release of their sophomore album Beyond The Stars on April 11, Valhalore look set to expand their presence even more with a sound capable of transcending genres and sweeping all in its path.HEAVY spoke with frontman Lachlan Neate and guitarist Anthony Willis to get more details. We start by asking how they are feeling about the album release."Absolutely thrilled," Neate beamed. "After waiting four years to release this music, it's pretty surreal that we're finally near the finish line."We ask the guys to dive deeper into Beyond The Stars musically."In terms of the themes of the album, it describes a person's journey from the beginning of their life to the end," Willis explained. "Each song deals with the different highs and lows, ups and downs, different emotions that one would experience throughout their life. And each song represents those different moments. Then at the end of the album, the final song really deals with what happens to you after we die, and can we become something greater than ourselves? So in that regard, the album is a bit of a concept album, and it's cyclic. Each of the songs that we have written pertains to this journey of someone's life experiences."In the full interview, Lachlan and Anthony further explained that Beyond The Stars is a concept piece that reflects the emotional journey of a person's life, shaped significantly by the band's experiences during the pandemic. Anthony emphasized the importance of the album's track listing for creating a cohesive listening experience, while Lachlan noted that the writing process involved contributions from all six band members and the producer, marking a shift from their previous solo work. This collaborative effort has allowed the band to develop a unique sound that integrates diverse influences, enhancing their musical identity.Valhalore plan to promote the album with a series of four theatrical shows in May, starting in Sydney and Melbourne, where they will perform most of the new material alongside older songs. Lachlan expressed excitement about the production-heavy nature of the performances, aiming to provide an engaging experience for fans and more.Get Beyond The Stars here: https://valhalore.rpm.link/beyondprBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Send us a textOver the course of his career, Olav Mjelva has become something of a face of the Hardanger Fiddle, with his fiddle being heard in settings such as Rings of Power, God of War: Ragnarök, and Marvel's Loki. As well as being featured in over 60 studio projects, he is also well known in the Scandifolk scene for his work with Sver, the Nordic Fiddlers Bloc, Rydvall/Mjelva, and the Lodestar Trio. After collaborating with Einar Selvik and Ivar Bjornson for Skuggsjá, Olav has returned to sign with ByNorse for his project Afargang, whose debut album “Andvake” is looking to reimagine what Folk Metal can be. I hope you enjoy this milestone episode of the Nordic Sound, in which Olav and I discuss his upbringing as a fiddler from Røros, his love of black metal, and how his upcoming album Andvake blends these two worlds, and as always, taking little detours along the way.Timestamps:0:00 Intro1:12 Sver in the States4:38 Origin Stories10:11 Learning the Hardanger Fiddle13:00 Becoming a Studio Musician18:04 Skuggsjá23:02 Afargang37:25 Black Metal as a Folk Musician45:11 The Nordic Sound48:29 Waiting for Andvake52:22 ByNorse56:24 Norway's Folk Music boomSupport the showThe Nordic Sound is supported by its patrons over on Patreon.com/nordicsoundThe Nordic Sound is supported by its patrons:GeorgeBetsCarrieGenLeighMikeCindyClaytonDrakeEricJamieJuliaMaryMichaelMichaelSeanSimonTony

Making a Scene Presents Gerry Casey's Interview with Simon Michael of Subway to SallySubway to Sally is a German folk metal band founded in Potsdam in the early 1990s. Their music has clear folk and medieval influences, later also adding gothic and metal elements. With their continuous inclusion of oriental sounds and elements of classical music and the use of instruments seldom seen in metal bands such as bagpipes, shawm, violin, hurdy-gurdy and lute, Subway to Sally has acquired the label of medieval metal. The band has released 12 studio albums, two live albums, and two live DVDs. Their fame is centered mainly in the German-speaking countries, having played only a handful of concerts outside of that area. http://www.makingascene.org

Roestig.
