Norse mythology and belief systems were largely recorded by Christian authors in the 13th century, creating a significant historical gap that requires careful interpretation. The primary source for these myths is Snorri Sturluson, an Icelandic poet and politician who wrote the Prose Edda as a handbook to help poets access ancestral stories. These myths describe a world born from the meeting of fire in Muspelheim and ice in Niflheim within the eternal void of Ginnungagap. Life began with the primordial giant Ymir, whose body parts eventually formed the sky, earth, and sea. The mythology also predicts a dramatic conclusion at Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods, where the world is destroyed by fire and the giant Surtr. A chilling detail from these accounts describes the trickster Loki arriving at the end of the world in a ship called Naglfar, which was constructed from the fingernails of the dead. To prevent this ship from being completed quickly, the Norse were traditionally advised to trim the nails of the deceased before burial. Snorri Sturluson, who preserved these incredible tales, met a violent end himself; he was murdered in his basement on the orders of the Norwegian king during a period of bloody civil war in Iceland. 5/81600 Norse mythology and belief systems were largely recorded by Christian authors in the 13th century, creating a significant historical gap that requires careful interpretation. This week, the Cru dives into a strange and powerful prompt pulled from Norse mythology: Ginnungagap, the vast, primordial void of fog (that's fog, not frogs, WebEater!) that exists between worlds. From that idea, the conversation spirals into something every writer knows too well: the "creative" void. What do you do when nothing is flowing? When every sentence feels forced? When the story just won't come together? We dig into:Writing through creative blocks and burnoutThe difference between natural flow and “forcing it”Channeling frustration and anger writing into something usefulUsing constraints and prompts to unlock unexpected breakthroughsAs always, we take the prompt and turn it into original flash fiction, written fast, read aloud, and shared in its raw, unpolished form. Tune in around the 13 minute mark for those.Like this weeks episode and wish you could read as well as listen? In the vast, uncharted waters of the North Atlantic, sailors once spoke of something vast moving beneath their ships, something capable of dragging entire vessels into the depths without warning. In this chapter, we examine the legend of the ‘The Kraken', a sea creature said to dwell off the coasts of Norway and Greenland, described in early accounts as a colossal, many-limbed being that could pull ships beneath the waves. Join us as we explore where these accounts began, how they spread through seafaring culture, and whether the legend may have been shaped by real encounters with creatures from the deep.Text Me (this is 3rd party & I cannot respond, but I see all messages)Support the showIf you have more information or a correction on something mentioned in this chapter, email us at luke@lukemordue.comFor more information on the show, to find all our social accounts and to ensure you are up to date on all we do, visit www.lukemordue.com/podcast

In this long-awaited episode of The Skeptical Shaman podcast, host Rachel White (of TOTEM Readings) chats with Clay Martin, Priest of the Path of the Barbarian Spirit and author of three incredible books including: Barbarian Spirit, Prairie Fire, and Wrath of the Wendigo. Clay has taken an unusual-- but very shamanic-- road to becoming a full-time Woo Woo practitioner. He had a long and illustrious military career in active duty, having served as an infantryman, Scout Sniper, and Reconnaissance Marine and, after transitioning to the Army, he joined the 19th Special Forces Group before returning to active duty with the 3rd Special Forces Group. In 2013, Clay was medically retired, and what followed was a difficult spiral into chaos. But, in 2022, Clay underwent transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy for traumatic brain injury. Six months later, he had his first psilocybin experience. Clay now calls psilocybin "the Sacrament", and believe that true healing begins at the spiritual level. Since his use of the Sacrament, he has encountered Norse gods, channeled visions of the future, and dedicated himself to a life of healing service to other wounded warriors. He is also now an active, working priest in his pagan church, reconnecting military veterans to the old gods and the old ways. Clay upends everything The Business of Woo tells you a New Age practitioner looks, sounds, and acts like. This episode kicks off our dude-only season of the podcast for precisely this reason: men are often underrepresented and underserved by the Business of Woo, often feeling alienated and "uninvited" to this space. The result? We all suffer from the monopoly of enshittified sameness.Clay, and others like him, are challenging this paradigm. And we here at TOTEM and The Skeptical Shaman podcast sure are happy about it.LINKS:Rachel's Website: https://www.totemreadings.comTOTEM Readings Substack: https://totemrach.substack.comRachel's Other Links: https://linktr.ee/totemrachPlease support the Sponsors of The Skeptical Shaman Podcast:TOTEM + PUCK HCKY Merch Drop: https://puckhcky.com/collections/totemThe TOTEM Flower Essence Deck: https://a.co/d/gw16LsGThe TOTEM Flower Essences: https://www.etsy.com/shop/TotemReadingsATXTOTEM Spiritual Transformation Coaching: https://www.totemreadings.com/coachingTOTEM Business of Woo Mentoring: https://www.totemreadings.com/business-of-wooClay's Links:Website: https://www.barbarianspirit.com/IG: https://www.barbarianspirit.com/Please note: The views and opinions expressed on The Skeptical Shaman do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. Sigurd says he doesn't care about dragons or gold, but he can't stop dreaming about them. Finally, Regin the smithy tries to forge a powerful sword to help him defeat the dragon. Will the sword be powerful enough or will the broken pieces of Gram, his father's famous sword, be needed instead? If you prefer a music free version, please scroll down to our previous episode. Journey beneath the branches of Yggdrasil - The World Tree, follow the paths of Odin, Thor, Loki and other gods; encounter mythical creatures like Fenrir, Jörmungandr and Surtr and experience the calm unfolding of fate, the long winter, the final battle between gods and giants, the end of the world and the quiet aftermath of epic events and new beginning. Let this sleep story lull you into restful sleep.
Norse Mythology retellings or inspired fiction seem so thin on the ground compared to other mythologies so OBVIOUSLY Lauren was all over Rachel Van Dykens "Fallen Gods". Lauren finds out all about the inspiration behind it, background information needed and the US setting. In plot points they go more into runes, more into characters and discuss the ending.Tell us what you've been loving....
This week we are joined by Rachel Van Dyken. Rachel Van Dyken the #1 New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA TODAY bestselling author of regency and contemporary romances. When she's not writing you can find her drinking coffee at Starbucks and plotting her next book while watching guilty-pleasure TV. Her new romantasy FALLEN GODS from Red Tower Books is out now.In this episode, Rachel discusses her diverse writing career, which spans multiple genres including fantasy, romance, and mafia stories, and explains the importance of research in her work. Rachel also opens up about the pressures of being an author, managing her own business, and the impact of stress on her health. Throughout the conversation, she reflects on her Norwegian heritage and how it inspired her latest book, "Fallen Gods," dedicated to her grandfather. Rachel's story is one of resilience, creativity, and the pursuit of passion.Recommendations From This Episode: Girls5evaThe Vikings!: Crash Course World HistoryNathan Hill - The NixFollow Rachel: Instagram: @rachvd TikTok: @rachvdRachel's Facebook Group: Rachel's New Rockin' ReadersFollow Carly: @carlyjmontagFollow Emily: @thefunnywalshFollow the podcast: @aloneatlunchpod Please rate and review the podcast! Another great talk from this year with acclaimed comics writer Al Ewing with deep-dives. First into two legendary mythic heroes: Thor and Metamorpho.Ewing explores the mythic roots, narrative shifts, and creative challenges behind modern takes on these icons — from thunder gods to chemical-powered shapeshifters. Deep dives into Norse Mythology and the shame that we only got six issues of a great modern spin on Rex Mason Simon Stagg Saphire and of course Java Hour two highlights Venom and Absolute Green Lantern. We unpack the horror-tinged, high-stakes reinventing of legacy characters — from symbiotic monsters to cosmic-light mythos and what was the deal with the Paul hatred (lol)

When people think of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, they often picture tweedy Oxford professors and beloved fantasy authors. But their writing wasn't drawn only from their bucolic days teaching at Oxford and walking in the English countryside; it had a darker, deeper backdrop: the trenches of World War I and the cataclysm of World War II. Lewis and Tolkien weren't just fantasy writers — they were war veterans, cultural critics, and men with firsthand knowledge of evil, heroism, and sacrifice. In today's episode, I'm joined by Joseph Loconte, returning to the show to discuss his latest book, The War for Middle Earth. We explore how both world wars shaped the perspectives of Tolkien and Lewis, found their way into works like The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia, and infused their literary masterpieces with moral weight, spiritual depth, and timeless themes of resistance, friendship, and redemption. We also talk about the legendary friendship between Tolkien and Lewis, the creation of the Inklings, and how the men demonstrated the countercultural power of imaginative storytelling.Resources Related to the PodcastRelated AoM podcasts:#178: The Inklings Mastermind Group#272: Lewis, Tolkien, and the Myth of Progress (Loconte's first appearance on the AoM podcast)#430: Why You Need to Join the Great Conversation About the Great Books#499: A Fascinating Primer on Norse Mythology #594: How Churchill (and London) Survived the Blitz of 1940#723: Men Without Chests#765: C.S. I welcome several amazing Jungians during the darkening season to discuss a groundbreaking book, Soul Lore of the North: Towards a Synthesis of Jungian Psychology and the Way of the Hero. We'll explore the intersection of Old Norse soul lore and Jungian depth psychology, revealing how ancient mythic frameworks can illuminate the modern psyche. Through themes such as the structure of the soul, the role of spirit-companions, and the heroic journey inward, we'll offer a transformative path to healing and self-discovery. You're invited to walk the shadowed trail of the unconscious, guided by ancestral wisdom and the archetypal quest for wholeness. 5. Creation, Ragnarok, and the Cautionary Tale of Post-Conversion Norse Mythology Eleanor Barraclough Embers of the Hands: Hidden Histories of the Viking Age Accessing Norse belief systems requires caution because the main textual sources, such as the Prose and Poetic Eddas, were written in the thirteenth century in Iceland, after the conversion to Christianity. Snorri Sturluson, a poet and politician murdered in thirteenth-century Iceland, composed the Prose Edda as a handbook to preserve the myths. Norse creation mythology describes life beginning in Ginungagap, the eternal void where the fire world (Muspel) met the ice world (Niflheim), forming the primordial ice giant Ymir. The mythological destruction, Ragnarok (the doom of the gods), involves the fire giant Surtr and Loki arriving on Naglfar, a ship terrifyingly constructed from the fingernails of dead people. 1920

The discussion focuses on Norse mythology, noting that main written sources, such as Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda and the Poetic Edda, were recorded in 13th-century Iceland, post-conversion to Christianity, necessitating caution in interpretation. The creation story involves the eternal void (Ginnungagap) meeting the fire world (Muspelheim) and the ice world (Niflheim), from which the primordial ice giant Ymir formed. The end of the world is Ragnarök, where the fire giant Surtr destroys the world and Loki sails the ship Naglfar, made from the nails of dead people. Snorri Sturluson, a major figure in this era, was murdered in his own basement around the 13th century on the orders of the Norwegian king during a time of civil war in Iceland.
In times of rising frustration over the state of nations, times of personal, ecological, societal, and planetary impasse, when cycles of senseless suffering seemingly repeat themselves over and over, and all the global upheaval still isn't bringing about change... in times when stuck energies need to move and forces that have been restrained for generations long to break free, the myths offer visions of roarers, bellowers, trumpeters, and conch-blasters. These movers and shakers do more than release pent up energy. They awaken, they transform, and they announce the transition from one world to the next. So the howling storm gods of the Vedas "move the immovable" and the Goddess herself trembles the worlds with her cosmic roaring laughter and ushers in a new age. But the roar of the goddess is not just the roar of speaking truth to external powers — it is also an internal reckoning, a moment of reconciliation that takes place within us — a recognition of all those places in us that have gone dormant and need waking and all those old patterns that need to be shaken free. As bodies try to somatically process and metabolize the times we are living in, sometimes we need a good mother roar.... and we can learn much from traditions that harness the power of uttered sound to invoke help, to guard against intrusion, to dispel negative forces, and to carry us into states of deeper connectivity. Ready yourself for roars and bellows, trumpets of judgement, announcing angels, and a deep dive into the Norse Ragnarok myth with Rune Rasmussen of the Nordic animism channel. Because sometimes you gotta go full apocalyptic to meet the energy of the times. Featuring music from (and an interview with) Sakha songstress Snow Raven, songs, yelps, bellows, and shrieks from Marya Stark and Travis Puntarelli, appropriately doomy guitar from Sunny Reinhardt, and angelic calls from Jeunae Elita, this episode is designed to MOVE STUCK ENERGY, and then ultimately to channel it in creative and life-affirming ways. Listen loud and shake it free. Support the show

It's time for the weird giant battle. One of these seems to happen every book, and it's where we get super confused. Alex's clay creation, Pottery Barn, battles a lumpy clay giant, while TJ battles Hrungnir. Magnus just kind of stands there. Relatable king. We both wish we got to see more of Alex and Magnus's relationship developing. They defeat the giant and his clay friend, and are told to travel to Flam and take the train. But before they can do that, Blitz and Hearth return. It's time to face Hearth's father once again. They go to Alfheim and Alderman's home is not how they left it. Instead of a mean dad, they must face a mean dragon. We get a bit too deep because of Manasa's Thor's Rumbling question. Erin's question is silly, per usual. This week, I was given the opportunity to join 'The Occult Rejects' yet again for a roundtable discussion as we explore the darkest layers of modern society -- which largely remain in the shadows -- deliberately obscuring the vision of the general public. Our undisclosed enemies, shrouded in darkness, intentionally unraveling the very moral fabric disrupting the international community at large. As we remain headstrong in the pursuit of truth, we stumble across the path of our common enemy possessed with the darkest ambitions unbeknownst to the vast majority, involving complicated coverups, sexual blackmail, childhood trauma, methods of mind-control, and even ritualized murder or blood sacrifice requiring the use of ancient runes by various groups who tend to believe in the magickal elements of neopaganism. We must first understand the reconstructed ideology of our enemy if we are to defend against them. Please consider supporting our work-Links For The Occult Rejects and The Spiritual Gangstershttps://linktr.ee/theoccultrejectsOccult Research Institutehttps://www.occultresearchinstitute.org/Cash Apphttps://cash.app/$theoccultrejects Venmo@TheOccultRejects Buy Me A Coffeebuymeacoffee.com/TheOccultRejectsPatreon/ theoccultrejects Austin's Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/c/TheUnderclassPodcast Austin's Spreaker: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-underclass-podcast--6511540Austin's Rumble: https://rumble.com/user/TheUnderclassPodcastAustin's YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@UC537aCO9IfH0Hk93KjCvV6Q#truedetective #delphimurders #neopaganism #odinism #ancientrunes #bloodritualsacrifice #richardallen #norsemythology #pantheon #odinBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-underclass-podcast--6511540/support.
