For this month's episode we've gone back to ten years, only a few years before the podcast began to talk about our favourite songs of 2014, including trve kvlt black metal, avant garde noise, sparkly pop bangers, swedish alt country, & kraut influenced post rock. We also discuss whether Elbow make suitable gym music, global conspiracy theories involving giant stone owls, and songs that sound like you're about to be burned in a wicker man. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Alcest, Alvvays, Babymetal, Devandra Banhart, Beck, Charly Bliss, Elbow, EMA, First Aid Kit, Ben Frost, Grouper, Ben Howard, King Creosote, Jenny Lewis, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, J Mascis, Mayhem, Mogwai, Opeth, Public Service Broadcasting, Röyksopp & Robyn, Run The Jewels, Svalbard, Swans, Taylor Swift, Thou, Ultimate Painting, Sharon Van Etten, Warpaint, & James Yorkston.Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2juBbBjb0YxzF6VMAvNIEi?si=4334ba0599c44034Find our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next month or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Twitter – https://twitter.com/wedigmusicpcast/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com

Jesse Starcher, Robert Cooper and Mark Radulich present their Alcest Les Chants de l Aurore Metal Album Review as part of the MHOD Jukebox!Les Chants de l'Aurore (transl. The Songs of Dawn) is the seventh studio album by French post-black metal band Alcest, released on 21 June 2024 by Nuclear Blast.Alcest is a French post-black metal band from Bagnols-sur-Cèze, founded and led by Neige (Stéphane Paut). It began in 2000 as a black metal solo project by Neige, then became a trio, but members Aegnor and Argoth left the band following the 2001 release of their first demo, leaving Neige as the sole member. Neige began incorporating elements of shoegaze and post-metal into the project's sound from 2005 onwards and is largely credited with pioneering the fusion genre known as blackgaze. In 2009, drummer Winterhalter from Les Discrets joined Alcest, after eight years with Neige as its sole full-time member.Since its creation, Alcest has released seven studio albums and a number of EPs and split releases. Their fourth album, 2014's Shelter, marked a dramatic shift towards a distinctly shoegaze sound, while their subsequent album Kodama (2016) marked a return to their earlier blackgaze sound. The band are widely credited with pioneering the blackgaze/post-black metal genre, particularly with their 2005 EP Le secret. All of that plus video reviews of ALCEST - Protection, LORDI - Dead Again Jayne, ALCEST - Flamme Jumelle and GWAR cover "I'm Just Ken".Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

“Listen to it at night, by the sea.” These were Neige's parting words to me. After a discussion of the colors, emotions and seasons that Alcest's glorious Écailles De Lune runs through, his advice was to experience it in its natural habitat. Metal has always been beautiful. Metallica's “Fade to Black,” Black Sabbath's “Planet Caravan,” Emperor's “Into the Infinity of Thoughts,” metal has found glory both between and with crushing sections of doom. And Alcest tenderly weaves them all together in a grand tapestry. Écailles De Lune stands as the French outfit's finest fusion, with the sweeping brutality of Dissection in unholy matrimony with Slowdive's dream worlds. We met Alcest's mastermind, Neige, during Austin Terrorfest, chatting with him just before he took the stage. So listen to our interview, read our thoughts on Écailles De Lune and see why it's the best of the 10s.

"In 2007, the little-known French band Alcest released an album that would go on to be one of the founding texts of an entire genre, blackgaze. A melding of black metal and shoegaze, this album - Souvenirs d'un autre monde - is, 15 years later, still surprising in its delicacy and beauty, filled with childhood visions of fairy kingdoms. It was a gateway into a whole new musical world for me, so I was excited to take The Album Files on this journey." -Iain In this episode, we also discuss Bad Winds Blow, the album Matt and his brother Ash recently released. Together they are called Brineheart and you can find the album on all streaming platforms. "Griff is one of those new artists on the scene that you can't get enough of. When I first saw her perform at the Brit awards in 2021 I was blown away by her presence and immediately went in search of more. After I learned she writes, performs, and produces her own music I started to follow her closely, so I am excited to hopefully convert more people into fans of Griff. As a bonus! In the following years they continued to emerge and establish themselves as a solid part of the Reykjavik grassroots scene. In 2015, the song Kalt was released and attracted a lot of attention abroad. Subsequently, the band began performing with various well-known bands abroad. Over the past five years Kælan Mikla have travelled continuously and have released three LPs. Robert Smith, the front-man of the immortal band The Cure is a big fan and has booked Kælan Mikla to play at the various festivals he has curated, alongside iconic bands such as Pixies, Slowdive, Deftones, as well as having them solely open for the rock band Placebo. Following the release of their third LP, Nótt eftir nótt, they have gained a large audience amongst fans of dark and dreary music, but what really makes Kælan Mikla stand out is the strong audiovisual adventure through their magical world that is constantly evolving and always leaves the crowd with a memorable concert experience. The band's fourth album, Undir Köldum Norðurljósum, was released in 2021 to international acclaim and featured a guest appearance by French blackgaze band Alcest. https://www.kaelanmikla.com https://kaelanmikla.bandcamp.com/ https://open.spotify.com/artist/28meEMqGpDrolyQ9OVoDAH?si=DBZSMwjySRWSNfy65NylNQ https://music.apple.com/us/artist/kælan-mikla/1140519808 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXmnR43rroWZDFZrObOtWdQ https://www.facebook.com/Kaelanmikla/ https://www.instagram.com/kaelanmikla/ - Kinnat Sóley a.k.a. So, day three already. After the great and mighty Jarboe and Alcest, we now want to give some of you the chance to maybe discover a new band you might not have been giving attention by now: Sunflo'er from Potsdam in Upstate New York. Their latest album all these darlings and now me is bursting of energy and brimful with mighty, clever ideas and twists and turns that show a modern Hardcore band aiming for the sky. Enjoy our video-chat with the whole band! I did not know too much about Sunflo'er before this interview and me preparing for it. But listening through their discography and especially their latest album, I was not surprised because the label through which the four guys are releasing their music usually never fails in their roster-choices: Dark Trail Records . And they do not disappoint this time around either. Sunflo'er has made a giant leap and maybe released the modern American Hardcore album of 2022 next to Soul Glo and The Callous Daoboys. Therefore we talk about the record and the songwriting process behind it, but also about Wes Craven and why one of them has a box of Corn Dogs in his fridge! Enjoy!

We start with Danny who has a bug up his ass about social media and Crocs! Some of us have stronger opinions about Crocs than others. Plus we learn about Croc Nuts. Scott likes to randomly Google people he knows and decided to do Luke. He found Luke's wedding Zola. Classic pics abound on this site with Luke's sexy specimen on display. One pic reminds Luke of the night he met his wife at a show of a band Mike was in. They were one and done at the ole Berkley Front in metro Detroit. A classic night in 2009. Those pics also remind Mike of a trip to Chicago to see Pearl Jam that he partially forgot about. Googling Mike is more complicated, but we get to hear from Reese Witherspoon talking about Michael Govier's favorite movie. Danny also wants to know about the 69 position. Overrated? Underrated? What things do you think of to prevent an oncoming orgasm? Emailer Brian wants to defend Bill Maher (sorta) or at least against Luke's claim that he's the worst. He's also stoked for the NBA Draft which is Thursday night. Luke couldn't care less, but Scott and Mike are jacked to talk hoops. Have you seen the new movie Hustle with Adam Sandler? Brian speaks highly of it. This leads to a great question: what is the finest performance on celluloid by a non-actor? If you don't know who Haing S. Ngor is, you better recognize ASAP! Luke gets fired up about British actors stealing American acting roles. Also, was Shaq in Shazaam or Kazaam? Luke is pissed about the poor record of organ donation in the United States. Mr. Pink asks us about times we got fired. We definitely stories. We close the show with LeSecret by Alcest. On this episode we review Diorama, the second full length album from Danish blackgaze crew Møl. Back in 2018 their debut album Jord was one of Remfry's favorite release of the year, Steve liked it too… probably not as much if we're being honest though. But, due to our hosts' dual appreciation of the band there is certainly a high level of expectation for Diorama. Will the record live up to those expectations? Well, we're not going to tell you that here! But, with artists as diverse as Darkthrone, Alcest, Iron Maiden… er… AC/DC, Oasis and Kings of Leon all getting a name check in this episode, you can at least expect some fairly surprising revelations. Synthwave is one of those genres that has become a go to for metalheads due to its horror movie kinship, its wildly creative sound and its imagery which at times can mirror some of extreme metal's most enduring gorehounds. Perturbator and James Kent have been at the tip of this spear since Terror 404 back in 2012 and has shown more and more growth and depth on each successive album. Now, with Lustful Sacraments (Blood Music), the band dive further into the industrial side of the synth coin but do so in a way that doesn't leave anything behind. Think of it as an experiment gone incredibly right. Our maestro of the mic, Buke, chats with James about the new album and how it was conceived, his extensive background-and knowledge of-black metal, his deep rooted love for horror and how it has shaped his musical output, and how much time actually goes into making this type of music and being happy with final results. They also spend some time on synth and electronic shop talk, what James listens to and how it keeps him vibrant, a video game appearance and Alcest tie in, James' favorite Darkthrone album, and many other topics. This is an excellent conversation so dive in and enjoy!9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram
