John and Arvin close season 9 with a discussion about the importance and impact of being on a team. Most people who grow up playing sports don't end up playing professionally as a career, but the principles and character developed in the process enable them to approach life with the right perspective. After deriving several parallels between sports and ministry teams, the two men discuss the overarching goal God seeks to accomplish in a human's life: aligning each human soul with His heart in order for them to trust God not only as their Lord, but also their Father.
In episode 9, John and Arvin delve into the realities of leadership in ministry, the important sacrifices every person must make in order to last long in any profession, and the long-term fruit of staying faithful in the place God plants you.

(soundcloud.com / andoryukesuta)@andoryukesuta The town of Barrow, Alaska (now Utqiaġvik) is preparing for its annual period of the winter with a month-long polar night. As the town gets ready, a stranger arrives from a large ship and sabotages the town's communications and transports. Barrow's sheriff, Eben Oleson, investigates and learns that his estranged wife, Stella, missed the last plane out of town and must stay for 30 days. That night, a band of vampires, led by Marlow, attacks and slaughters most of the townspeople, forcing Eben's family and several other survivors to take shelter in a boarded-up house with a hidden attic. In the police station holding cell, Marlow finds the stranger, who believes the vampires will "turn" him as a reward for his help. However, Marlow snaps his neck. When the vampires torture a civilian as bait, Eben takes the opportunity to save a resident named John, who was hiding underneath a hut, injured from trying to protect his wife; however, Eben is horrified to see he has turned and forced to kill him when John tries to devour him. Resident Wilson is forced to chase after his father, Isaac, who has dementia, out into the open, and both are killed. 18 days later, when a blizzard hits, the group uses the whiteout to go to the general store for supplies but gets stranded after the blizzard ends. They head for the station while Eben creates a diversion. He lures the vampires to his grandmother's house and uses one of her ultraviolet lights to severely burn Marlow's lover, Iris, forcing him to mercy-kill her. Eben is aided by Beau, the town snowplow operator, who kills many vampires with his tractor. When he crashes, Beau attempts a suicide bombing to kill the remaining vampires. However, Beau and the vampires survive the explosion, and Marlow crushes his head. On Day 27, Stella and Eben see the deputy, Billy, signaling them with a flashlight and bring him back to the station after finding out he killed his family to save them from a more painful death. The trio find the others have made for the utilidor, a power and sewage treatment station that still has power, and head over there, but are separated after Stella saves Gail Robbins, a young girl whose family was slaughtered by the vampire Zurial. Eben and Billy make it to the utilidor but are attacked by the vampire Arvin. Billy kills Arvin but gets bitten in the process. Eben is forced to kill him when he starts to turn. As the month ends, with the sun due to rise, the vampires prepare to burn the fuel line running through the town, which will cause it to explode and destroy evidence of their presence. Realizing Stella is trapped and that he cannot beat the vampires in his current state, Eben injects himself with Billy's blood. Now a vampire, Eben confronts Marlow and manages to kill the vampire leader after a vicious fight, causing the remaining vampires to flee. Eben and Stella watch the sunrise together, sharing one last kiss. As the sun rises, Eben's body burns to ash in Stella's arms.

John and Arvin spend this season's final episode discussing disappointment as it pertains to trusting other people in a quote-unquote “Christian” context. There's a stigma around employees of Christian institutions that suggests Christian employees are exempt from making human mistakes. Thankfully, there's a way through these nuanced weeds and it has everything to do with reframing one's mindset around their work and life in God.
In this episode, John and Arvin discuss the 2024 Christmas Production: KING OF KINGS PART ONE. The two debrief the process and discuss the reasons why these shows tend to go the way they do.
Arvin Ganesan is the CEO of Fourth Power, which is developing a flexible-duration thermal energy system designed to meet the needs of an electrical grid increasingly powered by renewables. Their system heats liquid tin to extremely high temperatures, circulates it through carbon blocks for heat storage, and converts that heat back to electricity on demand via thermal photovoltaics. The technology aims to address both short-duration energy storage (5–10 hours) and long-duration needs (100 hours or more), with the ability to discharge power within seconds. At the end of last year, Fourth Power raised a Series A led by DCVC, with participation from Breakthrough Energy Ventures. Arvin's fascinating career includes time in the U.S. Senate as a senior policy advisor to the late Senator Frank Lautenberg, over five years at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and nearly six years at Apple as the head of global energy and environmental policy. In this episode, we explore Arvin's career path, his decision to join Fourth Power, and why the company's work matters for the future of energy storage. In this episode, we cover: [1:49] Arvin's career journey: From the EPA to Apple and beyond[8:13] Why Arvin chose to become CEO of Fourth Power[10:29] Focusing on electricity storage over industrial heat[12:06] Fourth Power's thermal energy storage system explained[17:11] How Fourth Power uses photovoltaics for efficient energy conversion[20:36] Trade-offs between Fourth Power's technology and lithium-ion batteries[25:03] Co-location strategies and powering renewable energy[28:21] Collaborating with utilities to meet grid demands[31:09] Fourth Power's milestones and current progress[32:57] Arvin's transition to a CEO role and what he's learning[34:59] Market optimism and the potential impact of Fourth Power's solutionRecommended Listening: Onshoring Clean Energy with Giulia Siccardo, MESCEpisode recorded on Aug 20, 2024 (Published on Dec 12, 2024) Stay Connected with MCJ:Cody Simms on LinkedIn | XVisit mcj.vcSubscribe to the MCJ NewsletterEnjoyed this episode? Happy Thanksgiving! John and Arvin sat down to discuss the delightful (and overstimulating) reality of getting together with family on thanksgiving. The two dive into stories from the past while also sharing helpful tips for navigating your own special smorgasbord of familial experiences this holiday season.
In this 5th episode of Season 8, John and Arvin observe the critics of the Big-C Church and how they've come to distinguish between legitimate oversight and just plain gossip.
Episode 4 is all about BOUNDARIES! John and Arvin have both worked in ministry for decades, so they've learned a lot from the implementation (or lack thereof) of healthy boundaries for themselves and those they lead. Chances are, if you haven't investigated the proper way to approach boundaries, you've likely been suffering from not having any.
In 1960, Smith College's Professor Newton Arvin and two of his colleagues were swept up in a scandal concocted in large part as a way of shaming being queer out of existence. Efforts to control the flow of what is erotica or smut is an ongoing crusade in the United States and in many places in the world. When those crusades are weaponized against targeted groups of people they can be lethal. Some of you listening to this episode might think a professor at a private college is a fairly privileged person, and you're not wrong, but his homosexuality stripped away much of that privilege. The other reason I'm sharing this story is that Newton Arvin and his two colleagues are stand-ins for the hundreds, perhaps thousands of mostly gay men who were arrested, jailed, and had their lives ruined for the offense of being gay. The potential loss of one's freedom and profession is both unbelievable from today's vantage point and entirely possible to imagine happening again. Please subscribe the the podcast. Thanks
In Episode 3, John and Arvin discuss the difficulty of distinguishing between what God WAS doing and what He might be doing next. It's easy to try and create a formulaic approach to how God has operated in our lives previously rather than trusting Him to do something new. Thankfully, God grants us helpful steps we can take to move from the good in our past to what can be great in the future.
In this episode, John and Arvin discuss the importance of trusting God for His unique plan each day rather than doubling down on what may have worked before (OR worked well for someone else).
John and Arvin are back! This season, we're diving into even more conversations around serving full-time behind the scenes at Victory Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Arvin Alaigh, writer & political activist from New Jersey, currently a Ph.D student at the University of Cambridge, to discuss his recent piece in The Nation entitled "Abolishing the “Ballot Line” Will Reshape Progressive Politics." Then, she speaks with Mya Frazier, journalist based in Columbus, Ohio, to discuss her recent piece in Harper's entitled “The Eviction Experts.” First, Emma runs through updates on +972's recent report on Israel's use of AI technology to bomb the families of Palestinian targets, Biden's supposed “anger” over Israel's slaughter of World Central Kitchen workers, Israeli elections, Donald Trump's legal woes, Ukraine's war efforts, labor action in Alabama and Chicago, fascism in Texas and Alabama, and emissions reporting, before watching Richard Haass' call for sanctions against Israel. Arvin Alaigh then joins, first walking through what New Jersey's “ballot line” voting entailed, and how it drastically reduces the chances of outsider and non-county-endorsed candidates in state primaries. Stepping back, Alaigh walks Emma through the corrupt politics that the ballot line policy has enabled, with two major culprits, Governor Phil Murphy and Senator Bob Menendez, also inspiring the most recent scandal, with Gov. Murphy using his power to push his wife onto the preferred ballot spot to replace recently-indicted Sen. Menendez's seat, seeing opposition Andy Kim file suit with no pushback from even Murphy's allies. Wrapping up, Arvin tackles the current state of the suit, and the ongoing injunction against New Jersey's ballot line policy. Mya Frazier then brings Emma through a brief history of her reporting on eviction and tenant-landlord power dynamics, and how reporting on the wave of evictions in the wake of the end of the COVID-19 eviction moratorium brought her to a corporate landlord conference of the Columbus Apartment Association. Expanding on this, Frazier walks through the major role that tech companies and startups played at the conference, advertising their ability to automate and streamline much of the landlord process, and how the automation trend plays with the increasing private consolidation of housing to severely undermines the power of tenants, bringing mass and constant eviction crisis to places like Columbus (Ohio). Next, Frazier parses through the severe necessity (and near impossibility) of federal housing regulation for tenants' rights, before wrapping up with a who's who of the consolidation of the housing market. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they discuss the heartwarming work of the World Central Kitchen and the White House's heartless insistence that Israel has yet to break international law. Jack from Colorado calls in to discuss the ongoing shift of right-wing content creators to manosphere content, which transitions perfectly into a Charlie Kirk clip, and Kenny from Berkeley expands on the growing movement of student organizing. They also discuss Israel's targeting of Iran amid US-Iranian negotiations, watch Chaya Raichik struggle to define wokeness in 2024, and talk with Ross from New York about depatriated and deported veterans, and the organizing efforts of Black Deported Veterans of America, plus, your calls and IMs!
