Our longtime friend Cheryl Scruggs joins us today to talk marriage, parenting and THRIVING!    Cheryl and her husband, Jeff, are biblical counselors and founders of Hope Matters Marriage Ministry.  Their book, “I Do Again” chronicles their story of marriage, divorce, and remarriage. They are passionate about seeing marriages changed, made whole and reconciled to God's plan.  Cheryl and Jeff have two grown daughters and 3 grandchildren.   Our discussion on this episode centers around how women can thrive in good times, hard times and everything in between. In other words, we talk about thriving in LIFE.  “Abundant life isn't perfect circumstances, it's perfect peace within those circumstances.”   In her new book, “Thriving Beyond Belief - Courageous, Rooted, Thriving Women,” Cheryl provides practical tools to improve every relationship, tools to know the real you, and tips on becoming more vulnerable.     “It's important to remember thriving doesn't mean happy.  You can thrive in every season of life, even when you're not necessarily happy.”    Cheryl's book is available everywhere you get your books! She also hosts a podcast of the same name.  ☺ Connect with Cheryl @cherylscruggs and @thrivingbeyondbeliefbook.  You can also learn more about their ministry by going to www.jeffandcherylscruggs.com.   The Raising Sinners Podcast is a part of the Christian Parenting Podcast Network. Today I'm so excited to share an interview with a woman I look up to so much, Cheryl Scruggs. Cheryl and her husband Jeff have a nonprofit called Hope for Marriages where they support couples in reconciling their marriages and they also co-wrote “I Do Again.”   Cheryl and Jeff spent 10 together in a disappointing marriage, only to get divorced and stay separated for 7 years. But that was not the end of their story. Theirs is one of unbelievable reconciliation that could only be possible with a God like ours.     I love their story not just because of the happy ending but because of the way God used their stories and hearts to change them and impact others as they submitted to His will. Regardless of the outcome of any tough situation or divorce, this is something He can (and promises to!) do for each of us.    I was blessed by this conversation realizing some of the ways we can go awry in our marriages and was spurred on in so many ways by her wisdom. Enjoy!

You guys, we are back with our first guest of the year! I'm so thrilled to be sharing this conversation I had with Cheryl Scruggs— she is the mother of Lauren Scruggs Kennedy (who we had on the podcast in episode 002- click here to listen!) who is a dear friend of mine. Cheryl and her husband have a nonprofit called Hope for Marriages where they support couples in reconciling their marriages and they also co-wrote “I Do Again.”   Cheryl + Jeff: The Way They Met " style="background-color: transparent; color: #222222; font-family: -webkit-standard; font-size: 18px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 36px; margin-top: 0px; orphans: 2; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">• Cheryl and her husband, Jeff, have such a beautiful story that genuinely makes me cry. • In a world that says to bail on something the second it becomes uncomfortable, they have chosen a countercultural response in their marriage. • Cheryl was working as a cocktail waitress to put herself through college when Jeff walked in. They talked a bit and he asked her out on a date. • She was already engaged at this time, but deep in her heart knew that she would not end up marrying the man to whom she was engaged. • When Jeff returned the next week, she agreed to go on a date with him. After a year, they became engaged.   Chasing Happy • Two years in to their marriage, she began to feel lonely. “I thought there was something wrong with me for feeling that way because it looked like we had the perfect life.” • She opens up about her IVF treatments that led her to have her two twin girls who are now 30 years old. She thought maybe they had been the missing link. • One day, she was on a sales trip and she met a man that she would eventually have an affair with. “I'm not proud of any of this, but this is our story.” • When she and Jeff moved from Los Angeles to Dallas, she found herself missing the man she had been having the affair with.  • They would have phone calls—connecting heart to heart. Ultimately, Cheryl filed for divorce from Jeff.    A Second Chance At Love • Looking back, she realizes that Jesus was the missing piece in her marriage. • “I think God had a different plan and we weren't following it.” • Two months after their divorce, Cheryl really dove into her faith. • “By the end of the year 1992, I realized that, ‘oh my gosh, I feel like God is wanting us to pursue reconciliation.'” • Jeff didn't think that was going to happen, so they continued to co-parent from separate homes. • “The more I read about biblical marriage, I realized if we could just work on this, we could have a marriage honoring God, being what God wanted us to be rather than who we were.” • Five years after their divorce, they began to spend more time together as a family. And soon after, Jeff began asking Cheryl out on dates. Soon after, they remarried. • Out of this experience, their nonprofit Hope for Marriages was born.   All In Commitment • “You yourself have to understand who you are and who God has made you.” • Cheryl recognizes that our pasts always have an effect on our relationships, but if we are aware of them, we can have more control over how they affect us. • “Happiness is very fleeting. What the Lord wants for us is deep joy. You can be going through trials and still have deep joy.”   Keep up with Cheryl at @cherylscruggs on Instagram, Thrivingbeyondbelief.com, on Facebook at Cheryl Scruggs. Here's where you can get her book “I Do Again.”     Hey, single ladies— are you frustrated by the dating world? Happy Valentines today! I am so thrilled to interview my wonderful husband Jeff Scruggs, on the podcast today. I hope you enjoy this very special conversation and remember to do something special for the loved one in your life. Jeff & Cheryl Scruggs are the founders of Hope Matters Marriage Ministries, a 501c3 non-profit Christian non-denominational organization. Their ministry includes sharing God’s heart for marriage and relationships through Biblical marriage counseling, writing, and speaking. They passionately seek to help make marriages whole in God’s power. We train, teach, and disciple believers from the Word of God, to help them understand their true identity in Jesus Christ so that they can live out an abundant marriage. Jeff & Cheryl are intimately familiar with a marriage focused on the principles of the world, the sting, heartbreak, pain from a divorce, and the deep-rooted hope and joy of a fully restored marriage centered on Jesus Christ. It is this unique perspective and experience that they obediently share in a private couple to couple, individual appointments, and with audiences nationwide. Their writings include the well-known book “I Do Again,” their 30-year story of marriage, betrayal, infidelity, divorce, emotional damage, forgiveness, restoration, trust, and re-marriage. They are co-authors of “Still LoLo” with their daughters Lauren and Brittany. This remarkable and life-changing story has been featured on The Today Show, I Am Second, Focus On The Family, The Village Church Interview with Matt Chandler, Good Morning America, and many more. Here's my interview with Jeff Scruggs.

Thriving Beyond Belief with Cheryl Scruggs

Today on the TBB podcast I am super excited to have a very special guest and friend. Kathie Lee Gifford and I first met in 2009, when she and Hoda had Jeff and I on their show, to talk about our book, I Do Again. Since then, we have had many opportunities to see each other in NYC, talk about our kids, and share the latest is in our lives! She has had a successful four-decade career as a television host, actress, singer, playwright, and author, and is best known for her 15 years on “Regis and Kathie Lee”. As most of you know, she is the co-host of the fourth hour of the Today Show with Hoda Kotb. One of the things I love the most about Kathie Lee is that she is unashamed about her walk with Jesus Christ, and shares her walk whenever possible. On today’s podcast, Kathie Lee gives us her insight about how she has learned to thrive, regardless of the circumstances she’s been given in life. She puts God first in her life, and lives by “it’s God’s faithfulness to me, not my faithfulness to God” that matters. In our conversation, we talk about lots of things like what you can do to prioritize your day, stay positive, laugh and enjoy every moment you have. And I just I love when she talks about her daily 9am call with her mom! Kathie Lee also has a new book coming out in March 2018 called The Rock, the Road and the Rabbi. Preorders start September 21, 2017 and I can’t wait to get it!

Cheryl and her husband live in Dallas, where they run a marriage ministry called Hope Matters Marriage Ministries. I have been so anxious to get a chance to chat with Cheryl. She shares about the Lord saving her in the years of their divorce, and calling her to restore her marriage.
