Five years after their first Christmas Poetry Slam in 2019 (routinely “regifted” ever since), the Ladies have finally picked up their pens to write a fresh batch of poems for the holiday season. And this time, they have help. Joining Sarah, Erin, and Rachel in the Lounge are authors Katie Schuermann and Lisa Clark. Together, they share original Christmas poems ranging from psalms of lament to epic odes to hilarious parodies. Whether you cry or laugh (or do both at once), you'll almost certainly be inspired to make poetry a more regular part of your holiday celebrations. Katie Schuermann is a household name in many LCMS circles, beloved for her cozy novels (among them, our summer book club pick The Saints of Whistle Grove) and for her nonfiction books including He Remembers the Barren and Pew Sisters. Click to visit Katie's website or browse her books from Concordia Publishing House, Kloria Publishing, and Emmanuel Press. Lisa M. Clark is an editor at Concordia Publishing House and the author of devotions, picture books, Bible curricula, Christmas programs, young adult novels — and literally hundreds of original hymn texts. I'll never forget the time in high school when Kate and I had a disagreement, and she threw down these inflammatory words: “welllll I am 18 years old.” I believe my response was something like, “yes dear one, you're an 18-year-old that drives our car, uses our cell phone, lives in our house, wears our clothes, and exists on our money.” (Perhaps I should have paused a bit before responding.)    Nonetheless, if you have older kids, you've probably had similar moments of trying to adjust to kids reaching adulthood-ish while they are still financially dependent and oftentimes making questionable decisions. Thank goodness Lisa Clark is here today!   Lisa is an author, mother, grandmother, and incredible lady who is giving some much-needed advice on parenting our adult-ish children. Some of the topics we cover include:  Best advice on sending a kid to college How to respect our child's independence while also giving them important advice  Practical ways to connect with older kids Recognizing they are adults even when they don't act like it   Even if you don't have older kids yet, the day is coming, so tune in for some great wisdom from precious Lisa Clark!     All things Cynthia Yanof  Lisa Clark Raising Sinners by Lisa Clark

It's the MOST WONDERFUL time of the year!!! It's Christmastime! And we're celebrating hard over here at Raising Sinners!   The story of Jesus' birth seems to come alive every year at this time as parents, grandparents, friends, and family tell the story from Luke chapter 2.  Every time we open God's word to read the account, it seems like it refreshes itself and becomes anew.  That's the truth of God's word, isn't it? It's always fresh and comes alive.  And the Christmas story is no different.    By gathering to tell the story, you're giving Jesus a seat at your table.  You're inviting Him into your celebration and making much of Him, the Guest of honor.  As we tell the story, we're being faithful to the generations behind us who are depending on us to repeat and repeat the message of Christ's birth to redeem mankind.  Oh, what a story! Oh, what a Savior!   We wish you and yours a blessed Christmas and a VERY Happy 2024!   As always, thanks for listening! We appreciate you! Today our guest, Katy Boatman, chats with us about her new devotional for boys, “You Can Trust.” We were fascinated listening to Katy discuss how she landed on this writing project.  (You'll have to listen to find out…☺)   Preteen boys have a lot of thoughts spinning through their curious minds each day.  But too often, their “what-if” questions are rooted in fear and anxiety as they try to find their way in a world that doesn't always make sense.  This easy-to-read devotional by Katy Boatman offers daily encouragement and truths to combat that worry.  Each of the 100 devotions, plus interactive activity days, (which sound super fun!) rallies boys to trust the God who has all the answers.  They'll explore questions such as:   What if I don't feel strong enough? What if I'm scared? What if my team loses? What if God changes His mind about me?   “You Can Trust” offers boys tangible reminders that they can trust God with all their what-ifs and questions in life.   Katy lives in Nashville, is passionate about mentoring the next generation and authored a devotional book, “You Can Rest,” for girls which was a finalist in the category of “Young People's Literature for the ECPA'S 2023 CHRISTIAN BOOK AWARD. “Check it out, too!    Connect with Katy on Instagram @katyboat   As always, thanks for listening! Nick grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan, where he is currently raising two young children of his own. He started practicing yoga in 2000 as an antidote to the head-centrism of college. He found it to be a beautiful combination of spiritual practice and exercise, a way to contemplate cosmic ideas as they manifest in the particular pleasures and pains of human life. When not teaching, running his studio Grateful Yoga, or parenting, Nick likes to contemplate the fruitful intersections of yoga, Buddhism and science. He explores these ideas weekly in his newsletter Within Us and Without Us on Substack. His weekly classes aspire to this integration, mixing science and yoga philosophy with inquiry-oriented yoga practices. Nick has extensive experience working with beginners, men, couples, emerging adults, traumatic brain injury, the chronically stressed, and those seeking to make yoga and meditation part of their daily routine. He is a certified yoga therapist (C-IAYT) through the International Association of Yoga Therapy. View his full resume here.  In spring 2022, Nick trained at the Kripalu School of Outdoor Leadership and now leads weekly outdoor experiences of communion with the lakeside lands around Evanston. Nick has a degree in Computer Science from Brown University, where he also studied the theory and practice of Buddhist meditation. Other influences include the Chinese arts of tai chi and qigong, running, the somatics of Lisa Clark and Bonnie Bainbridge-Cohen, improvisational theater, West African dance, artmaking, communing with nature, and cooking. We start where we are. This is not a hard hitting agenda or getting to the bottom of things, it's about being in the bottoms of things. Finding each other in the not-knowing. I'm here for the spaciousness, the awkwardness, the silliness, the silence — From the dark insides of our bodies to the brightness of our minds, I'm excited to welcome people who's impulses I'd like to get to know. www.weenapauly.com

Chris Sasser joins us today.  We've had Chris on before and he's extremely wise and helpful in discussing real life topics, like performance and how to parent against the mentality of EVERYTIHNG IS A PERFORMANCE! We're our kids' parents, not their agents. ☺    Chris is the pastor of family ministries at Port City Community Church in Wilmington, NC and author of the book, “Bags.”  (If you haven't read this book…read it!)    There is a ton of pressure in a child's life to perform in the classroom, on the field and at home.  Chris shares 3 practical thoughts for parents to consider in parenting them to know their identity is in Jesus Christ and not in what they do.   “We must redefine what success looks like in our family.”    He encourages parents to view the Ted xTalk, “Change the Game Project” by John O'Sullivan.     As always, thanks for listening! UPDATE: Hopefully you've listened to part 1 of this discussion with our friend, Caitlin Fechner.  We'd highly recommend you listen to part 1 before diving in with us for part 2.     We surveyed parents a few months ago about where they stood with regards to allowing (or not allowing) sleepovers for their kids.  The reviews were heavy on the “no way” or “family only” but there were quite a few parents landing on “yes, they're fun and such a great childhood memory!” And they are and were!    In the internet age, information is coming at us at lightning speed.  So, we know more.  In real time.  What do we do with that knowledge? Should it affect our parenting?   Our friend, Caitlin Fechner, joins us for this 2-part series.  Caitlin has a BA in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin and a MS in counseling from SMU.  She is a Licensed Professional Counselor, currently employed as a therapist with Dallas ISD.  She's married to Michael, and they have two sons, Trey and Milo.  We had so much to talk about that we decided to devote 2 episodes to this topic.  This discussion is hard and real.  Sleepovers in the 1970s consisted mostly of junk food, music, and a game or two of “straight as a board, light as a feather!” (iykyk) ☺    Sleepovers in the 2020s can look a lot different.  As always, you're the parent and will make decisions for your family that reflect your family values and parenting style.  We're all doing the best we can most days, and that's the truth.  Hopefully this episode will give you something to think about and consider as you make decisions for your family.     As always, thanks for listening! The Raising Sinners Podcast will be re-playing some of our favorite episodes (and yours!). Today we're talking CHANGE. New city.  New church.  New friends.  New schools.  New home.  New dog (hey Moose!)    The Stephens family has experienced lots of change in the couple of years and we wanted to check in with the queen of the household herself, Mrs. Debbie Stephens! Wife, mom, speaker, teacher and funny girl, Debbie shares from her heart how they've navigated their new normal.     Debbie is married to Jarrett Stephens, senior pastor of Champion Forest Baptist Church in Northwest Houston, Texas.  They have 4 daughters and 2 dogs.  (Fun fact: both Jarrett and Debbie have been guests on The Wonder Podcast! ☺)   “Obedience is costly but so worth it.”  Debbie Stephens   In obedience, the Stephens family left their life in the Dallas area and embarked on a new journey, but it wasn't easy.     Teaching our children to be flexible is difficult on many levels because most find their security in routines and consistency.  Change is hard.  But the Stephens family has done it with grace and come out on the other side shining bright! We absolutely LOVED our visit with Lauren.  Grab a coffee and enjoy this convo amongst friends.  Happy Summer! Lisa and Chrissie   Chatting with Lauren Chandler was truly like catching up with an old friend.  She is DE-LIGHTFUL!!! Lauren is an avid writer, a worship leader at her home church, The Village Church, in Flower Mound, Texas where she and her husband, Matt, have served for almost 20 years, and mom to her 3 children.  Lauren is also a Bird Lady! That's right! She watches birds, feeds birds, and even has an app on her phone telling her what kind of bird is perched on her windowsill at any given moment…she's legit! We just love her!   And she has a sincere and pure heart for worship. When her kids were younger, she wrote a song to help them in the highs and lows of life.  That song, became PRAISE HIM!, her new children's book out NOW.  Lauren's lyrical lines are accompanied by whimsical illustrations and encourage children that no matter day or night, wherever they go, they can praise God continually.     From page to page, readers will follow a child through her day as she goes from sunny morning to stormy afternoon and then a shadowy night.  Parents can utilize this book as a great resource to remind their children that God is always there with us, even when days are hard, and that only simple words are needed to praise Him.    Go to LaurenChandler.com to read more about Lauren, and her newest book, PRAISEHIM! It's available everywhere books are sold.     Connect with Lauren on Instagram @laurenchandler   We hope you enjoy our conversation with Lauren.  She's the real deal.  Her heart for Christ and worship encouraged our hearts in many ways.  As always, thanks for listening! Don't overthink making friends – for yourself or your kids! Enjoy! And Happy Summer! Lisa and Chrissie Friends.  Whether you are 8 or 58, making friends can be tricky.  Especially today when we are living in a false reality world called “social” media.  We have more “friends” than ever, but are experiencing depression, loneliness, and isolation more than ever, too.     Amy Pierson, mom to Eva, Isaac, and Benjamin, shares her personal experiences as a new mom in a big city, and how she helps her children navigate friendship.     “Why don't we invite someone?” These are Amy's connection words.  Going to the park? Invite someone! Going to eat dinner after a game? Invite someone! Taking a class at the gym? Invite someone! We're all looking for an invitation.  A simple invitation connects two people.  It's not hard to do, but why don't we do it? Fear.  We talk about it.     “You have to want friendship more than you fear not having it.”    We also discuss modeling friendship, being proactive and “helping” younger children learn how to be a friend.  Thanks Amy! Lisa and Chrissie   We have to admit it…WE ARE BIG EXPERIENCING GOD FANS!!! Dr. Henry Blackaby wrote the study 33 years ago, we have completed the study countless times over the years, and it has shaped us, encouraged us, challenged us and strengthened us! So, we were a little starstruck when Dr. Richard Blackaby joined us for this interview.   Dr. Richard Blackaby, Henry's son and ministry partner is the General Editor of the completely revised, Christian Standard Bible (CSB) Translation of the Experiencing God Bible.  Just released, it features unique design elements and study helps including sections throughout the Bible asking, as only Henry Blackaby can do, “Did you notice?” We so often read God's word in a hurry and miss so much truth and detail.  This Bible will help us think, study, and absorb what God would have for us each day.  And experience Him in His word.     We talk a lot about the study that changed us in this episode.  But we also ask our guest some parenting questions.  One of our favorite quotes, “There aren't enough rules to make your kids love Jesus.  So be so fun and full of joy that they can't possibly NOT want to follow Christ!” AMEN!!!! Teaching our children to be selfless and think of others first is a big parenting goal always looming in the backs of our minds, but seriously, it's hard in the day-to-day moments of life to really instill this into our children's minds and hearts.  Our society says worry about yourself! Focus on yourself! Take care of yourself! ME ME ME!    But the scripture is clear, “So he answered and said, you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself.”  Luke 10:27  Love God.  Love others.  That's our marching orders.     Our friend Rebecca Rapp-Salas joins us again to talk about raising children who are Kingdom minded and have a heart for serving others.  Rebecca grew up on the mission field and met her husband on the mission field.  The Salas' love Jesus and have devoted their lives to loving Him and others.  This was an easy conversation.  Rebecca and her husband David are raising their daughters Amelie and Toni to live out Luke 10:27. They serve others well.  Rebecca gives us ideas, thoughts, and intentional ways we can raise children to think of others first and desire to serve them.    We don't have to teach our children to focus on their own needs.  That comes with skin. ☺ We must teach our children to see those in front of us whom God created that need our love, impact, friendship, and possibly our food, clothes, money and Jesus.     The Raising Sinners Podcast is a part of the Christian Parenting Podcast Network. It's May and summer is quickly approaching.  We thought it would be fun to take a minute, and a breath, and dream about having a simple summer. Our friend Rebecca Rapp-Salas joins us and shares how her family keeps it simple.  It's funny but keeping is simple takes planning, intentionality, and grit.  Keeping it simple isn't that simple after all! ☺   What is a simple summer? It's recognizing the daily gifts of time, rest, and meals together that the school year typically doesn't afford us.  It's fireflies at night, walks in the neighborhood, an overnight camping trip, visiting grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, VBS, and summer camp.  It's lists of fun activities like smores over a fire, scavenger hunts through the park, adventures in the kitchen, service projects and late-night talks.   So many of us look up in August and wonder, “where did summer go?”  Is this because we looked forward to that grandiose trip the whole summer and forfeit the daily blessings of a simple, regular day? We want you to think ahead and plan for a simple summer.  Thank you, Rebecca, for spurring us on to do just that.   The Raising Sinners Podcast is a part of the Christian Parenting Podcast Network. They are passionate about seeing marriages changed, made whole and reconciled to God's plan.  Cheryl and Jeff have two grown daughters and 3 grandchildren.   Our discussion on this episode centers around how women can thrive in good times, hard times and everything in between. In other words, we talk about thriving in LIFE.  “Abundant life isn't perfect circumstances, it's perfect peace within those circumstances.”   In her new book, “Thriving Beyond Belief - Courageous, Rooted, Thriving Women,” Cheryl provides practical tools to improve every relationship, tools to know the real you, and tips on becoming more vulnerable.     “It's important to remember thriving doesn't mean happy.  You can thrive in every season of life, even when you're not necessarily happy.”    Cheryl's book is available everywhere you get your books! She also hosts a podcast of the same name.  ☺ Connect with Cheryl @cherylscruggs and @thrivingbeyondbeliefbook.  You can also learn more about their ministry by going to www.jeffandcherylscruggs.com.   The Raising Sinners Podcast is a part of the Christian Parenting Podcast Network. Mary Kruta is a wife, mother, Lutheran Lady, and part of the creative team behind Kruta Bakery in Collinsville, Illinois.   In this drool-worthy “Conversations with Creatives” episode, Mary shares stories and wisdom from her decades of experience helping to run a family-owned, from-scratch, small-town bakery. What's it like to be part of a century-old family business? When do bakers really get up in the morning? Why do professional bakers refer to “formulas” instead of “recipes”? And how on earth does Mary maintain her trim figure despite being surrounded by mouthwatering baked goods all day?   At the end of the episode, Mary challenges the Ladies to try their hand at what she considers the ultimate Easter dessert: carrot cake.   To learn more about Kruta Bakery and the Kruta family, check out their website and Facebook page.   You can also listen to previous “Conversations with Creatives” podcast episodes featuring liturgical seamstress Anna Hart, singer/songwriter Erin Bode, microfarmer Beth Ritzman, writer/editor Lisa Clark, author/soprano Katie Schuermann, visual artist Kelly Uffenbeck, and designer/entrepreneur Jessie Bell.  Connect with the Lutheran Ladies on social media in The Lutheran Ladies' Lounge Facebook discussion group (facebook.com/groups/LutheranLadiesLounge) and on Instagram @lutheranladieslounge. We were thrilled to chat with Audrey Elledge and Elizabeth Moore about their new prayerbook, “Liturgies for Hope–60 Prayers for the Highs, the Lows, and Everything in Between.”We want to be their best friends. Let's get that out there. They are full of JOY AND PURPOSE! This book started“as an act of defiance against fear.” They were great friends, living in NYC in March 2020 as Covid-19 swept the world. They watched as their friends, colleagues, fellow Believers, and neighbors fought isolation, sickness, and worry. God started to give them words of comfort and peace, and they wrote them down.  When we say the book is honest and holy, we mean it. There is a liturgy for anything and everything. If you've felt, hoped, or experienced it, there's a prayer. And the best part is each liturgy is accompanied by the scripture that led them to write. This book is a marvelous ministry and will spur you on spiritually and meet you where you are. Order the book on Amazon or Barnes and Noble, or you can hear them read it on Audible! Maria Bower shares her testimony of faith in this episode. All we can say is buckle up! God does a work in her heart and uses Chrissie in the process. Maria was searching, tired of religion, and wanted a relationship. And God answered her prayers.   From her first prayer for direction and clarity to her everyday prayers, she unrelentingly trusts God. She doesn't question His plan for her life or her family's, and she walks confidently because of His love for her. She is a woman of deep faith.   We loved hearing about Maria's faith journey so much that we ran out of time! But she wanted to ensure our listeners were reminded of two things: Maria reminds us NOT to get discouraged in our daily bible reading. No time to read? Then listen!   God doesn't want to guilt us into spending time with Him. As a desire of our heart, we want to spend time with Him, and sometimes listening to His word in the car, on a walk, or at home is the best way to “hear” from Him! She also reminds us not to lean on our own understanding. We'll never see the whole picture as God does, so we'll never understand everything that happens in this world.   Rest in Him today!   Thanks for joining us for this episode of The Wonder Podcast!   Hit subscribe, and please tell your friends!
