Welcome to The JOY Series on the Dear Daughters Podcast! I'm so glad you're here. I believe that gathering at the table over a simple meal is one of the best ways to love people and invite them to a closer relationship with God. So listen in and enjoy … right now we're talking about the secrets to joy at the table and I've invited my favorite table experts on the show. This week my favorite table expert is Kristin Schell. She lives in Austin, Texas, with her husband, Tony, and one of their four children—the others have left the nest. She loves loving her neighbors, and she wrote a book and travels all over to encourage others to love their neighbors, too. Kristin is known for her Turquoise Table, which started a movement of Turquoise Tables and Front Yard People (ordinary people who create community right where they live) across the country. I'll let Kristin tell you more about that herself. Kristin believes that our deepest need is to belong, our deepest desires to feel needed and included. And an invitation to the table is a reminder that you belong, that you are welcome. And you know what? We are all in a position to offer that to someone in some way. It will look different for everyone. Our lives have seasons, and so does the table. And it doesn't have to be an invitation to dinner, it can be an invitation for coffee or a walk or needlepoint. The important thing is to do just as it says in Kristin's favorite verse, Romans 12:13: Take every opportunity to open your life and home to others. So let's dive a little deeper into what that looks like today. I hope that you feel like you belong. And I hope that you will help others feel like they belong, too. My prayer for you and for me is that we will take every opportunity to open our lives and our homes to others. SUBSCRIBE IN ITUNES SHOW NOTES Follow Kristin on Instagram. Check out Kristin online. Kristen had four young children and found herself spending most of her time taking her children from one place to another.Even though she was busy she found herself to be lonely. Then one day she went out brought a table, painted it turquoise and set it up in her garden. The intention was to be welcoming to anyone who wanted to join her friends, neighbours or whoever was passing by.Kristen discusses how she came up with the idea of the Turquoise Table and how it helped people connect with each other. After people had joined Kristen, they went out and got their own table and the idea of having a safe place to connect grew. But as Kristen points out in this podcast you don't need a physical table. It's all about opening up and letting people in and taking the opportunity to connect with each other. You can connect with Kristen here:www.theturquoisetable.comFacebookInstagram: **********************************Stacey, The Modern Storyteller, is a storytelling expert and host of The Life Chapters Podcast and The P.S. This week I talk to my friend and MILS-Sister (Military Spouse-Sister) Meg Kelvington. During the pandemic, between her leadership and determination to keep us Christ-centered and sane, and my determination to keep us jubilant and maybe slightly tipsy, she and I worked our magic to keep the heart and soul of our community vibrant. While much of our community-building efforts began before the shutdown in 2020, I feel, as a community, we were our best during the pandemic and this has motivated me to cultivate the same sense of community in every lived-in space I have going forward. As I get older, I find that community where one LIVES is so important. We don't always have to go out to find a sense of belonging and although it may seem hard at first, it is possible to cultivate a sense of belonging and togetherness in heterogeneous communities. Listen as she and I share our community stories and provide advice from our lived experiences on how to create a community where it is needed most, in our neighborhoods. About this week's guest: I'm kicking myself for this because during the episode I fail to really capture what a badass Meg is. Please forgive me! Meg flew helicopters, planes and deployed to Afghanistan. Now she uses her Army leadership experience to coach others through her company "Riveting Mission LLC" while being an Army Wife and mother to 4 young children. She grew up in an Army family with both her mother and father being West Point graduates. She joined the family business and graduated from the United States Military Academy in 2006. After graduating from flight school in 2008, qualified in both the Blackhawk helicopter and RC-12 Guardrail airplane, she was stationed at Hunter Army Airfield. She then deployed to Afghanistan and flew over 200 combat hours. After additional schooling, she went on to the 82nd Airborne Division and 1st Corps before leaving the Army to focus on her family and pursue coaching and mentoring. She has done work with Team Red White and Blue, Wear Blue: Run to Remember, and led groups in her local church. She and her husband, Mike, have four children, McKinley (9), Madison (8), “Mac” Arthur (5), and Moriah (2). Find her at riveting.mission@gmail.com and on Facebook @RivetingMissionLLC and Instagram @riveting.mission.llc She runs a Monday morning virtual group that shares a short Bible-based message and then does a workout together called "Fit To Serve." This episode in our “3 For You” series features Tri Delta alumna Kristin Schell, Texas, founder of The Turquoise Table. As someone on a mission to love her neighbors, Kristin offers great insight on building community in a time of social distancing. She looks at the difference between loneliness and isolation, and the concept of hospitality as love of a stranger. Even in self-isolation, there still opportunities for new connections, taking care of yourself and getting to know people. By being brave as a sisterhood, we can create powerful empathy as we get through this together!"3 For You" is a series of resources to help guide you and uncover the best tips from experts as we navigate our new circumstances during COVID-19. In our new social-distancing and even shelter-in-place environment thanks to the Corona Virus - it's still important to remain connected. And there are safe ways to do that, with the people who live closest to us. Kristin Schell chats with us today (via Zoom!) on why we need to and simply ways how to do just that. Kristin Schell is an author, speaker and blogger on the subjects of food, faith, and hospitality. Passionate about community, she founded the Turquoise Table and Front Yard People movement where she offers encouragement & practical insight on how to open our lives and homes to others. She lives in Austin, Texas, with her husband, Tony, and their four children.
There are many things my husband and I are both on board with. Our food preferences are very similar as is our taste in furniture, décor, music, and perfume. But when we don't agree, I am quietly stubborn and he bristles at any attempt to control him. He wants to air the conflict and I would much prefer to wish it away. He sees in black and white and I point out how the same thing could be seen from multiple angles. He is decisive, and the less important a decision is, the harder it is for me to make it. If you haven't guessed it by now, we are in a lot of ways polar opposites. Perhaps you can relate. But what happens when you and your spouse find that you feel very differently about something that is pretty important to you? This week we are going to dive into the question of how do we live on mission in our neighborhood if our spouse is not on board. Next up in the “Obstacles to Neighborhood Missional Living” series is “Neighborhood Missional Living When My Spouse Is Not on Board”! Listen in, or if you prefer to read, head on over here to the blog. From this page you can view the full topic line-up for the series and easily click over to the post on the blog. Register for Creating Community & Connection: A Workshop with Kristin Schell In this episode of The Turquoise Table, host Kristin Schell continues the storytelling series talking with people who are creating community in unique and remarkable ways. Rachel Jones lives at the crossroads of faith and culture in the Horn of Africa. She is the author of the book Stronger Than Death, and she and her husband founded the International School of Djibouti. Her story takes us on a beautiful journey from a high rise apartment complex in Minneapolis to a school in The Horn of Africa. Rachel’s story of creating community and connection is one of the most inspiring yet. Relationships that started in her own backyard led her family across the globe to Djibouti. When she was just twenty-two years old and a new mother of twins, Rachel received hospitality from complete strangers, her Somali neighbors. Her immigrant neighbors befriended her -- bringing her food and even offering to clean her house while she rested with the twins. Rachel was overwhelmed by their incredible friendship and a curiosity to know more about their home East Africa was born. What transpires next is remarkable. Rachel and her family move from urban Minneapolis to a rural part of Somalia. Then to Djibouti. Kristin and Rachel talk about what it’s like to be a Christian in a country that is 99% Muslim and the incredible relationships she’s made with her neighbors. Rachel gives us a brief overview of the Muslim religion and piques our curiosity to learn more. After all, loving your Muslim neighbor is the same as loving your non-Muslim neighbor. Register for Creating Community & Connection: A Workshop with Kristin Schell. In this episode of The Turquoise Table, host Kristin Schell speaks with Maria Reed, founder of the home improvement television show Moving with the Military. Maria’s mission is to bridge the military-civilian divide through design and community building. Kristin and Maria discuss the unique hardships military families face and how the community can welcome them with open arms. To begin, Maria shares her background and her own experiences being in a military family. She was born in Cuba and raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She worked for many years in the film industry as a producer. However, during this time she dated long-distance and fell in love with her military husband. To her surprise, soon after they were married her husband deployed, and she found out she was pregnant. 17 years and five moves later, her love for the film industry continued with her. She then formed the idea for her television show, Moving with the Military, from her own life experiences raising a military family. Maria describes the fear that comes with starting life over every time her family moved. Sometimes, she would barely leave her house and often felt paralyzed. She shares a story of making friends with another military wife. Now she can find excitement and positive experiences from moving. While there are struggles for military families to build community, Kristin and Maria agree that the Turquoise Table has been a great resource for military families to find a sense of place in their community. With the growing number of military families living outside military bases, Maria saw a need for home makeovers and her television show. Maria is in charge of the difficult task of choosing a military family for a makeover through the submission of stories and nominations. From backyards to bedrooms, the show has completed 27 makeovers in three years. With the work of her show, she encourages civilians to be a part of the lives of military families that live around them. Maria also describes the purpose of DIY nights within the communities and is coming out with a cookbook, The Military Melting Pot, as a way to meld families together. Her biggest tip to civilians is to reach out to military families in their neighborhood and be in community with one another. What Do You Need? A simple question inspires The Turquoise Cart Program at Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas. In this episode of The Turquoise Table, host Kristin Schell speaks with Kim Muench, a volunteer program coordinator at Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas. Kim began her Turquoise Table journey by placing her own Turquoise Table in her front yard. Unfortunately, this was met with resistance by her Homeowners Association, and, despite Kim’s efforts to convince them otherwise, they would not allow her to keep her table in the front yard. Still determined to create community in her neighborhood, Kim began a tradition of bringing her Turquoise Table from the back yard to the front yard one Friday night per month. Each month, between three and seven families join hers to play games on the street and socialize. Kim hopes that even more families will join them, and that her community will continue to grow. However, bringing out her Turquoise Table once a month wasn’t enough for Kim. She brought the idea of placing a table at Cook Children’s Hospital to her boss, who told her it wasn’t feasible. However, Kim and her boss came up with the idea of turquoise carts: rolling hospitality carts that go from room to room serving parents. When children are in the hospital, parents often forget to take care of themselves. The children receive constant attention, but parents often lose themselves in the care of their children. Kim wanted to start The turquoise Cart Project to serve and uplift these parents. To jumpstart the project, Kim asked all the parents who had children in the hospital: “what do you need?” This simple but powerful question rendered all the information she needed to pursue her idea of the turquoise carts. Kim is grateful for the impact the project has already made, and encourages listeners to create their own Turquoise Table missions wherever they are. The Turquoise Table calling is not limited to a front yard picnic table. As Kim has proven, it can be manifested anywhere that there are people to be served and community to be created. In today’s episode of The Turquoise Table, host Kristin Schell interviews Bailey T. Hurley, who is committed to small community settings with her husband and two children. Kristin and Bailey discuss small groups: how to find one, how to join one, and even how to start one. Kristin shares how she and Tony are in the process of starting their own small group in their church community. Bailey gives tangible tips on how you can invite people into community in your life, as well as how you can sustain community. While Bailey is committed to lifelong friendships, she explains how you can start slowly and easily, as well as how to maintain high-quality friendships when you live far apart. In her neighborhood, Bailey builds friendships across generations. When Bailey arranges play dates, sets up the book club meeting or invites someone over, it’s a lot of work. However, she gets quality time, the conversations she needed, and the chance to he heard in her circle of friends. On the other hand, when you experience hospitality fatigue, it is important to take breaks and know your boundaries. It’s equally important to make sure that what you choose to do in community is something you love, so if you love reading, have a book club, and if you love cooking, invite people over for dinner. Her most recent book Beholding and Becoming: The Art of Everyday Worship takes us on a journey of redirecting our eyes and hearts for worship, right where we are. Ruth and Kristin discuss the role social media plays in our ability to be present. We are distracted by millions of images that fly by, we don’t even realize our short-sightedness and hurry can lead to shallow faith. Ruth and Kristin discuss how hard it is to be the new family in a community and the assumptions that are made which prevent people from inviting a family over. In today’s episode of The Turquoise Table, host Kristin Schell has an inspiring conversation with Rebekah Lyons, co-founder of Q Ideas, a nonprofit organization, and author; her newest book is Rhythms of Renewal: Trading Stress and Anxiety for a Life of Peace and Purpose. During this episode, Kristin and Rebekah discuss how stress threatens our mental and physical health, and how to manage it in a holistic manner. According to the American Institute of Stress, 77% of the population experiences physical symptoms associated with stress on a regular basis. This is the result of the loneliness epidemic, the false sense of connection in the digital age. These numbers are dismal, even at a first glance. But you can handle stress in a positive, efficient, and wholesome manner that gets you back into the rhythm God created for you. The way to do this is by following four pillars: rest, restore, connect, and create. It is essential to remember that each of us is created for community. Being alone is not what God intends for us, and that is why we are suffering and stressed when we are lonely. Committing to 15 minutes every morning to connect with God will be beneficial and uplifting. You can do this by making this time to sit down, relax, and listen to what He has to say to you. Thus you will notice that you actually can get into the rhythms God created for us to be in back into your life. Make sure to tune in to hear all the healthy and encouraging wisdom and insight from Kristin and Rebekah. ⭐️ Rate, review, and subscribe to the podcast! ⭐️ Links: Rebekah’s website: rebekahlyons.com Rhythms of Renewal: Trading Stress and Anxiety for a Life of Peace and Purpose Join our FREE online community for: full show notes and links podcast episode discussion guide journal prompts Rebekah's fabulous charcuterie boar The Turquoise Table Community
In today’s episode of The Turquoise Table, host Kristin Schell interviews Leslie Verner, who is sharing with us about hospitality and loving others well. Leslie recently published her book Invited: The Power of Hospitality in an Age of Loneliness, which dives into the epidemic of social isolation as a result of us lacking face-to-face interaction with one another. In today’s episode of The Turquoise Table, host Kristin Schell interviews Kat Armstrong, an innovative ministry leader, a sought-after speaker, and the co-founder and executive director of Polished. Kat stewards the community of Polished, which is a network of young professional women who gather over a meal to discuss the intersection of work and faith. The diverse group of women discuss the hardships they are experiencing at work, as well as what they believe and how faith can be applied to their careers. Kat explains how she uses the Bible to inform her personal life, and how Jesus has prioritized for us what’s most important: loving God and loving others. Kat realized, through conversations and by looking inward, that many women want to give more of themselves to their communities and their faith, but they are scared. In her book, No More Holding Back, Kat uncovers the history of ideological gender bias around women not using their brains as much as men and being smaller or weaker. Theologically, any of the early church fathers looked to Eve as an example as someone easily deceived and not to be trusted with truth or leadership. But within the Bible, there are many hidden female figures that led and bettered the community. Many of the young professionals at Polished are looking for a mentor, not just in terms of work, but also for life. Kat explains that any Christ-follower can find a mentor that is also a Christ-follower at a local church that works for your faith and schedule. In the Polished chapters, there are groups of women who believe in the power of prayer to support their fellow members in times of hardship or struggle. Kat’s prayer for the women that read her book is that they feel they can still be who they are and love God and other people well. oin Stephanie and Michelle as they interview Kristin Schell, author and founder of The Turquoise Table® and Front Yard People movement.
Have you ever felt lonely despite being surrounded by tons of people? Maybe you are sitting at your desk with co-workers all around you, in the middle of happy hour with friends, or cooking dinner for your family and you have that moment where you just feel alone. We are rarely ever physically alone in today’s hyper-connected world and yet, we often feel like we are missing out on the meaningful connections that make us feel seen, heard and loved. Craving connection with those around her, Kristin Schell built a community at a turquoise table right in her front yard. Her story will encourage you to build authentic relationships and show up for others right where you are. You’ll also catch up with our HQ team later on in the episode and hear how some of their closest friends have showed up for them throughout their lives. Kristin Schell is on a mission to love her neighbors. She put a picnic table in her front yard, painted it turquoise, and began inviting neighbors, friends, and even strangers, to hang out and do life together at The Turquoise Table. A new concept of hospitality unfolded in her neighborhood, and before long The Turquoise Table led to a movement of Front Yard People—ordinary people who long to create community right where they live. Today there are thousands of Turquoise Tables all across America from California to Maine. In all fifty states and thirteen countries, Turquoise Tables have become a symbol of hospitality, a safe place to sit down and connect over a cup of coffee or glass of sweet tea. As founder of the Turquoise Table and Front Yard People movement, Kristin travels the country speaking at conferences and events with an encouraging word on how to open our lives and homes to others. She lives in Austin, Texas, with her husband, Tony, and their four children. Kristin’s book The Turquoise Table: Finding Community and Connection in Your Own Front Yard (HarperCollins Christian Publishing) is available where ever books are sold. It’s the last 2018 episode of the Turquoise Table Podcast, and I’m in one of my favorite places: the kitchen! Today I’m whipping up a five-ingredient holiday appetizer, Cranberry Pistachio Gruyère Croutons, and thinking about all the wonderful guests we’ve had on the show this year. I’ve had the incredible opportunity to talk to thought makers, authors, experts and leaders who have had shared important lessons on hospitality and community, and how we can connect with the people in our neighborhoods. So today, we’re going to reflect on the wise words of a few guests we’ve had at the table, and how we can carry the lessons they have given us into the new year. (And don’t worry, I’m sharing that over-the-top delicious crouton recipe with you at the end of the show!)

We’re making Turquoise Table history today with our very first pop-up podcast! A few weeks ago, my hospitality partner-in-crime Susie Davis and I recorded a live podcast in my front yard with fifty friends and our special guest, Myquillyn Smith. And y’all, just a hint of what’s to come: this will be the first of many pop-up podcasts because we had so much fun! So if you don’t know Myquillyn, you’re going to fall in love very soon. She’s the brains behind The Nesting Place, a beautiful blog where she encourages women to create warm, inviting homes using what they have, wherever they are. Myquillyn just released her brand-new book Cozy Minimalist Home. And inspired by the book, Myquillyn answered questions from our live audience about how to create a cozy home with less stuff. Music to your ears, right? And be sure to stay till the end, where we dish on a yummy cider recipe you’ll want at all of your holiday parties.

Today on the Dear Daughters Podcast, I’m talking with Kristin Schell of the Turquoise Table about all things Thanksgiving. This is the final episode in what I’m calling the Thanksgiving Trio which is three episodes with three of my favorite table people. The first was with EP 75 with Bri McKoy, the second was EP 76 with Jen Schmidt and last but certainly not least is with my friend and neighbor, Kristin! Kristin reveals her biggest Thanksgiving blunder and how that led her to create one simple rule to follow every Thanksgiving. I think you’ll benefit from hearing what that rule is and how it makes everything much easier for Kristin over the holiday. As well, she talks about allowing space for real connection with the people at the table. Kristin is just the best at creating space to spend quality time with her people. Kristin is a hoot. You will just love her. And you also might love winning a signed copy of her book + a cute pie tea towel + a couple Capri Blue Fir & Firewood Candles. Just jump over to my Instagram to enter to win! We love to talk about community around the table, about fostering connection with people on our streets and in our neighborhoods. But we get really inspired when we see people take their Turquoise Table gatherings to the next level by getting together to create connection beyond their neighborhoods. That’s why we’re excited this week to share an opportunity with you on how you can easily organize a gathering that brightens the lives of children in other countries by packing simple shoeboxes full of toys and goodies. Each year, Operation Christmas Child delivers hundreds of thousands of these shoeboxes, filled by volunteers, to kids all over the world, spreading a message of love in the process. And to tell us how meaningful this little gift can be, we’re thrilled to have Yuliya Shubina and Gracie O’Laughlin from Operation Christmas Child on the show to tell us all about the program and how we can participate. Just wait until you hear Yuliya’s story—when she was 9 years old, she received a shoebox that changed her life forever. Her story shows us how a simple act of love can have a huge impact. And stay around until the end of the episode, when Kristin shares a delicious sweet-and-salty snack you can make for your own shoebox packing party! Show Summary:Our guests today are going to help us get ready for the holidays in the best way: they're preparing our hearts for giving to little ones in need. Gracie O'Laughlin and Yuliya Shubina work for Operation Christmas Child, an international relief organization that shares God's love with children around the world in the form of a shoebox. At some point, maybe your family has packed a shoebox gift, whether through your school, church, or neighborhood. Today, Gracie and Yuliya are going to walk us through how to pack those shoeboxes, what to put inside, how to host a packing party at your Turquoise Table, and when and where to drop off those boxes. And just wait, y'all, until you hear Yuliya's story. When she was nine years old, Yuliya was living in Central Asia and actually received an Operation Christmas Child shoebox gift with a letter from the young girl who packed the box. These shoeboxes of love really do make an impact, and Yuliya is living testament to that. I cannot wait for you to hear her story. The Turquoise Table has been an Operation Christmas Child partner for a few years now, and it's one of our favorite things to do every year to kick off the holiday season. I am thrilled to have Gracie and Yuliya on the show today to share this wonderful work. And stick around for a super yummy Heavenly Harvest Chex Mix recipe that’s a snap to whip up for your shoebox packing party! Links, Products, and Recipes We Mentioned: Operation Christmas Child Gift Suggestions (and what not to pack) Turquoise Table Blog Post: “How to Host a Shoebox Packing Party” Need help from an Operation Christmas Child volunteer? Recipe: Heavenly Harvest Chex Mix Interview Quotes:“God, we know, doesn't waste any seasons in any of our lives ” – Yuliya Shubina, Operation Christmas Child “I remember [my stuffed puppy dog in my OCC shoebox] was the nicest toy that my sister and I have ever owned. And so even though I didn't want to, I had to share this puppy dog with my sister, also with my cousins. This puppy would travel to their house, stay with them a week or two at a time. They would play with it, and then we would get it back—not to mention, all of the neighbor kids who also got their turn playing and petting this puppy dog.” – Yuliya Shubina, Operation Christmas Child “The most important item [in my shoebox], actually, wasn't a puppy dog. It was the letter from the girl who packed it for me. . . . She wrote, ‘I am praying for you. God loves you.’ And I remember reading and translating that very simple letter, and getting to these last two sentences and just wondering why would a stranger, who has never met me, who lives all the way across the world from me, who doesn't know me, would not only bless me with a beautiful shoebox gift that is packed with so many wonderful items, but also tells me there is God out there who loves and cares for me and that she is praying to this God on my behalf. ” – Yuliya Shubina, Operation Christmas Child “I will never forget the feelings that those words left in my heart. I remember carrying that sentence with me for years and continuing to wonder, Who is this God that she's praying to. And once again, why would a stranger do something like that?” – Yuliya Shubina, Operation Christmas Child “There's just something so approachable about the simplicity of this. . . . When we just show up and do something so simple, it allows God to do what only God can do. That's the beauty of it.” – Kristin Schell “It's fun to pack fun items such as toys, school supplies, hygiene items in the shoeboxes, but that's not the most important part about this ministry. The most important part is prayer that we packed the shoeboxes with.” – Yuliya Shubina, Operation Christmas Child “There are millions of stories that we have heard. The most surprising for me is when a child has been praying for a very specific item, a child or a family praying for a very specific item, and then that item shows up in a shoebox. ” – Gracie O’Laughlin, Operation Christmas Child Connect with Operation Christmas Child: Website FacebookTwitterInstagram
Meredith and Kaytee are back in your earbuds for a show that required us to put up our dukes to fight with technology in more ways than one. Give us grace on the audio foibles this week, and blame Skype, m’kay? You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us: happy podcast vibes and bookish t-shirts. We dive in to discussing 3 books each. Two we really enjoyed and one… not so much. Watch out for those strong opinions in this segment this week! Then we spend a little time talking about Anne Bogel’s new book, I’d Rather Be Reading, and the pieces that resonated with both of us! You’ll also hear our first non-sponsor sponsor segment. Obviously we’re a bit unclear what “sponsorship” means at this point! We finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we’d like to put into every reader’s hands, and this week’s picks will either tear out your heart or scare the pee-waddle out of you (Meredith’s phrasing. We need to feel like we belong before we can extend an invitation to others. That’s what today’s guest at the Turquoise Table, Whitney Bell, reminded Kristin a few Sundays ago as Whitney gave a sermon at Kristin’s church. Whitney is the middle school ministry director at Kristin’s church in Austin, and she’s guided not only Kristin’s four kids, but scores of middle schoolers in her tenure. And whether you’re in the trenches with teens or looking for more inspiration on how to love deep, you’ll drink deeply from Whitney’s advice. Today Whitney and Kristin talk about practical and creative ways to connect with your teen, even when they shy away from deep conversations, and why it’s important for kids to have trusted adults in their lives in addition to their parents. Kristin and Whitney share insight not only for those of us with teens, but wisdom we can all take away about the power of connection: sometimes the best way to love someone is to sit with them and be, accepting them just as they are. And be sure to stay till the end for a delicious snack recipe that that’ll make your house smell like heaven and become a fall favorite.
In 2011 Joplin, Missouri, was devastated by an EF-5 tornado. The storm ripped up 15 miles of the town, killing 161 people. Turquoise Table community member Ann Leach survived, but lost everything. Ann tells us her remarkable story of rebuilding after the storm, the miracle of the human spirit, and the beauty of a community coming together to survive and thrive. A grief counselor and life coach, Ann gives us tips on how to help those in our community who are hurting, what to say when you have no idea how to say it, and how we can find hope in the most dire situations.
Lauren Flake is Lauren is an author and blogger from Austin, TX, and a member of our Turquoise Table community. Lauren has been using her table in really powerful, special ways since she lost her mother Dixie to early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease. Today Lauren shares her story and walks us through what community looked like for her during and after her mother’s illness. She gives us first-hand advice on how not to fix the problem, but how to show up to simply be present with those who are grieving, and what that looks like.
Sometimes the thought of having people over is a little overwhelming but it doesn't have to be. Learn how to engage your neighbors and keep it simple. Today, Kristin Schell has some ideas on how to be a good neighbor with her idea of the Turquoise Table. Her mission is: "I'm on a mission to love my neighbors. I put an ordinary picnic table in my front yard, painted it turquoise and invited neighbors, friends, and even strangers to hang out and do life together at the Turquoise Table. " It's something we can all do. Find out how!

Where do I even begin? I am in awe of GOD that HE would use the angst of a woman who desired to make a difference in HIM. A table. That poignant gathering place...in the front yard? A Lowe's picnic table? Haahaa! Yes! A picnic table painted "Nifty Turquoise" by Sherwin Williams. The fears never were, "What if I fail?" Instead they were the question, "What if this does really well?" Now how's that for a "What if?" All the while for me personally to have the honor of having so many people sit in my guest chair here in the studio blows me away every time. Meanwhile a woman whom I've wanted to meet for years, named Kristin Schell showed up in my home studio! Really? Yes! Really!! All I can do is laugh with JOY! So GOD! Some may ask, did you know someone to connect with her? Yep! I networked with the NETWORKER OF ALL...and HIS name is JESUS! And wow, did we ever find that out today when Kristin was here. To know how many people we knew - or people we knew that knew the same people is hilarious and yet again, it points back to The Father, the Author and Finisher of each our lives!
Kristin Schell is on a mission to love her neighbors. She put a picnic table in her front yard, painted it turquoise, and began inviting neighbors, friends, and even strangers, to hang out and do life together at The Turquoise Table. As founder of the Turquoise Table and Front Yard People movement, Kristin travels the country speaking at conferences and events with an encouraging word on how to open our lives and homes to others. Faith Story (1:49) Kristin's testimony is the backdrop and preparation God used for the story of The Turquoise Table. In middle school Kristin was beat up so her mama pulled her from school and enrolled her in a parochial school where she wasn't allowed to participate in the daily church service. Other events developed during those years that led to Kristin walking away from Jesus. Spoiler alert! She found her way back to him after a friend in a foreign country invited her to church and she realized that the Lord had been there all along. Encouragement For During The Journey (9:20) Kristin offers encouragement to women who are in the midst of the struggle to not fall into the trap of comparison when they hear someone else's story. There's a story that isn't mine but shows those good and Godly characters I know to be true no matter what's going on your life. The Turquoise Table (11:00) Kristin talks about the story behind The Turquoise Table. She had a craving and wanted to share her story and Jesus with others. She often tried inviting people to church and many times it didn't work out. The table is almost like the Lord's way of saying, "Let's start at the beginning and keep this simple." She asked the Lord to teach her about hospitality, outreach and loving others. Get In Touch Want to get in touch with Kristin? Listen as Air1's Monika Kelly chats with Kristin Schell, author of the Turquoise Table: Finding Community and Connection in Your Own Front Yard, about easy hospitality that can start with a picnic table
Listen as K-LOVE's Monika Kelly chats with Kristin Schell, the author of The Turquoise Table: Finding Community and Connection in Your Own Front Yard. What started out as a simple idea has turned global, with turquoise picnic tables all over the country and even internationally.
This week on the podcast, I talked with Amy Hannon of Euna Mae’s and Kristin Schell of the Turquoise Table about true, biblical hospitality. And good news – it’s much simpler than we often make it and often more fun. It doesn’t matter what your house looks like or how good the food is – all that hospitality requires is being available and welcoming. Ordinary moments around the table or in the front yard become holy when we’re truly available. “All the other stuff,” as Kristin says, “is just gravy. Good, Amy Hannon style gravy.” Today on the podcast we talk about the difference between hospitality and entertaining. We hope it will encourage you to have spiritual eyes to see the people around you, to release your expectations, and open your front door. This week's episode features Part 1 of Kristin live at the Turquoise Table talking to her own neighbors about how they got to know each other. Through a few simple steps of outreach, their community and neighborhood flourished as neighbors took the initiative to be welcoming, hospitable and accessible. Listen in on their conversation, which is full of advice to those of us who really want to know our neighbors, but don't know where to start. You'll love hearing about where they started and where they are today--and how we can all create greater connection on our own street.
Welcome to The Turquoise Table Podcast with Kristin Schell. Kristin’s guest in our debut episode is Thomas Farley, better known as Mister Manners. Thomas is an etiquette expert, speaker, and author who inspires audiences across America. He’s perhaps best known as the beloved guest in his role as Mister Manners on NBC The Today Show. Kristin and Thomas talk about what it means to be a good neighbor and Thomas gives tips on simple ways to get around barriers that keep us from knowing the people who live near us whether home is the upper West Side of NYC or suburban America. Emphasizing that face-to-face communication is always to be prized over digital connection, Thomas encourages us all to put “people over pixels,” and that life is much sweeter when we are in community with each other. In Kristin’s Kitchen segment this week, sponsored by Shipt!, Kristin shares her grandmother’s delicious and easy chocolate sheet cake recipe. While she whips up the decadent cake, Kristin invites you to think about the rhythm of your neighborhood and shares a story from a Turquoise Table in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

My dear friend Leah Marshall rejoins me on this episode to talk about one of our favorite things...food! Food was meant to be savored and shared. God created it for more than simple nourishment for our bodies; it is meant to be experienced. It is a catalyst for community, a joint effort between God and humanity, and a source of joy. In this episode, we share about our fun food experiences on our birthday road trip/cruise, food memories, the satisfaction that good food and fellowship brings, as well as our favorite foods here in the Tulsa area. This was such a fun one to do! We reference the following in this episode: Lone Wolf, Laffa, Antoinette's Baking Co, China Garden, India Palace, Tandoori Guys, Rose Rock Creamery, Jinya, Shawkat's Bakery, Umberto's Pizza, Mandarin Taste, Wild Fork, Oceana (New Orleans), Cafe du Monde (New Orleans), Mama's Fried Chicken (Opelousas, LA), The Turquoise Table by Kristin Schell, A Meal with Jesus by Tim Chester, Jen Hatmaker's "For the Love Podcast: For the love of food: Ep 03: Melissa D'Arabian"
It’s Episode #3 of our phenomenal “For the Love of New Beginnings” Series. This week, Jen talks to Kristin Schell, the author of The Turquoise Table and leader of the Front Yard People movement. Kristin shares how she was longing for connection and belonging in her community and was struck by the realization that she didn’t know many of her neighbors, their names or much less their stories. This moved her to take a step toward that connection, and she started with a brightly colored turquoise picnic table that she put smack dab in the middle of her front yard. Kristin’s simple act of inviting connection at a turquoise picnic table has spawned a movement that has spread across the country; from individuals and families putting turquoise tables in their front yards right along with churches, businesses and parks getting involved. We’ll all be inspired and challenged to get to know our neighbors in the new year with the simple ideas and resources Kristin passes on that can bring the joy of community right to our own front yards.
Today, we are kicking off the holiday season of chatologie with Kristin Schell of the Turquoise Table. Y'all, I'm just gonna tell you that this is one of my very favorite interviews. Author, speaker & founder of the Front Yard People Movement, Kristin Schell shares her inspiring story challenging us to experience "freedom from achieving, striving, & doing - just show up and be present and love." Kristin Schell is an author of The Turquoise Table (Thomas Nelson (5/17), speaker & blogger on the subjects of food, faith, and hospitality. Passionate about community, she has served at every level, from grassroots-level work in church and local nonprofits as well our nation’s capital. As founder of the Turquoise Table and Front Yard People movement, Kristin travels the country speaking at conferences and events with an encouraging word on how to open our lives and homes to others. She lives in Austin, Texas, with her husband, Tony, and their four kids.
Author of The Turquoise Table, Kristin Schell, joins us! She talks about "Finding Community and Connection in Her Own Front Yard" and describes how her desire to practice the ministry of presence turned into a movement of hospitality that spread across the world. Krisitin painted a picnic table turquoise, set it up in her front yard and spent intentional time out there to get to know her neighbors. She confesses that she needed to learn the difference between entertaining guests vs. hospitality. God showed her through the Turquoise Table that being present was what He was calling her to. She used her creativity to gather others around the table and she now describes herself as a "holder of stories" as others tell her about their own turquoise table experiences. You can find more info about the book and Kristin at http://www.kristinschell.com https://www.facebook.com/FrontYardPeople/ Her book is available at retail book stores nationwide and online.

Episode #027 with Kristin SchellThe Art of Practicing Hospitality Head to KristiClover.com/027 to see all the Show Notes & Awesome Quotes that we collected for you! If you are not already familiar with Kristin and her turquoise table, after today, you are going to want to run out and check out her amazing new book The Turquoise Table. It’s about finding community and connecting with those in your community in your own front yard. You are in for a treat today. Romans 12 is one of my favorite passages—especially verses 12-13, which talk about the “practicing hospitality.” This is what we are talking about today—hospitality. We all have a lot of gifts from the Lord. As I’ve mentioned on other episodes, I love helping people. A passion of mine to help people simplify—to know when to say “no” to the things that we can, so we can say “yes” to the things that God wants us focused on. When we start simplifying, we start seeing the joy that comes from that. One of the major themes that you will see woven into each of these podcasts is guests who have said “yes” to God in one way or another. Even when we say “yes” to the most simple of things, God can show up and use that in a big way—just like He used the little boy with his loaves of bread and fishes. That’s exactly what we’re going to hear in this episode. How one person said yes to God in the area of hospitality. We all have different gifts, but God tells us to practice hospitality! Today we’re going to break down the difference between hospitality and entertaining. Hospitality is opening the door. And as you will hear in this episode, Kristin says you can say “yes” to God and “yes” to hospitality and you don’t even have to open your door! That’s just one of the many things that I love about this episode—we simplify hospitality! When you think of the story of Mary and Martha, you have Martha trying to do it all—trying to be hospitable, and Mary who sitting at the feet of Jesus. That’s what I want to encourage you guys today. Sometimes we get caught up in the busyness of hospitality, and sometimes we just need to sit with the people that Jesus is bringing to us. I am ultra-excited for you to listen to this episode today! I know that you are just going to love it! ON A SIMPLY JOYFUL NOTE… This episode is full of so many great ideas for simplifying hospitality. You aren't going to want to miss it! Hi friends! I'm so excited to share this episode of Heart Lessons with you today. My special guest is Kristin Schell. Kristin started the Turquoise Table and #frontyardpeople movement, which is all about building community with those around you. Kristin just released her first book and so we chat about many of the ideas she shared there including how to make space in your heart for others, the difference between hospitality and entertaining, and how we should be ok inviting others into our lives and homes because it is less about perfection and so much more about just belonging and being together. In this age of being so "connected" via social media I think learning to connect with others in a face to face way is deeply important and I'm so happy Kristin was able to share her heart and her vision with us here. Kristin Schell wants to be a front yard person. In an effort to do life in a way that was accessible to her neighbors, to facilitate relationships in their everyday experiences, she put a picnic table in her front yard and painted it turquoise. She had no idea that would become a movement of turquoise tables around the country. You'll hear in this episode that Kristin is a dear friend to both Alex and Krista. She shares a love of hospitality, food and the table. As she discovers ways to get to know and build connections with her own neighbors, she shares tips with her readers. In this episode, on the actual launch day of her new book, The Turquoise Table, we talk about hospitality, what can happen at a front yard table, how shepherds' pie can be modified without lamb, and Kristin's new partnership with the Tuesday Morning retail chain. Don't miss this conversation in our own virtual front yard. May the sisterhood be a turquoise table right here for you to stop by, listen, and make new friends.

She is the mom to adult twin daughters - Brittany Morgan and Lauren Scruggs Kennedy (who joined me for episode #132). She's also the co-author of I Do Again and Still LoLo. Cheryl and her husband live in Dallas, where they run a marriage ministry called Hope Matters Marriage Ministries. I have been so anxious to get a chance to chat with Cheryl. You may remember part of her story from Lauren's interview a few weeks ago. After her own extramarital affair, Cheryl filed for divorce from her husband. She shares about the Lord saving her in the years of their divorce, and calling her to restore her marriage. After 7 years of divorce and a beautiful story of reconciliation, Cheryl and Jeff got remarried. They are now passionate about marriage ministry and helping couples to find hope in their marriages. I absolutely loved hearing Cheryl's story. Marriage is hard, really hard. There are marriages all around me that are in hard places. Cheryl's story is evidence of how our marriages are never without hope with the gospel as a foundation. A new concept of hospitality unfolded in her neighborhood, and before long The Turquoise Table led to a movement of Front Yard People—ordinary people who long to create community right where they live.A gatherer at heart, Kristin brings people together for delicious food and stories at her table and online home www.kristinschell.com. She also shares with us a recipe for this amazing dish which she says is a crowd-pleaser and what she'd cook my husband and me if we visited her in Austin. I haven't made it yet, but I am going to the market today so maybe I'll grab the ingredients for Chicken Marbella: Shalom Steps: Every episode, I ask our Shalom Sista to give us 2-5 practical next steps to help empower us if we feel inspired to share in her Shalom Practice. Kristin is the heart behind the Turquoise Table, a movement to get people out in their front yard where they can connect with neighbors and build genuine community. Among other things, we talk about the difference between entertaining and hospitality, the importance of family traditions, and our mutual struggle to keep our kids at the table for more than five minutes.Kristin is one of those people who manage to make you feel like she's your best friend, even if you just met. She is a delight. Enjoy!
