Nels & Mollie Sitting in a Tree (K-I-S-S-I-N-G… sorta) Hold onto your bonnets, folks—Nels Oleson is LIVING. HIS. BEST. LIFE.This week, we dive into Season 6's “Second Spring,” aka the midlife crisis episode we didn't know we needed. Nels finally gets fed up with Harriet, Nellie, and Willy's constant harping and dinner demands, and decides it's time to take a little “business trip” … and maybe find himself a little happiness while he's at it.Cut to: Nels, free at last, living his prairie bachelor fantasy at a charming boarding house run by Mollie — a sweet Irish beauty with a soft brogue, a warm heart, and the kind of kindness Harriet wouldn't recognize if it smacked her with a bonnet. Suddenly, Nels is smiling again, cracking jokes, and looking suspiciously like a man who's discovered the meaning of life (and maybe love) over a cup of tea.Meanwhile, back in Walnut Grove, Harriet realizes something terrifying: Nels might actually not come back. Cue full panic mode. It's possibly the most begrudging display of vulnerability ever committed to frontier television. Will Nels leave his life for Mollie's kindness and her lilting accent? Or will Harriet's last-ditch charm offensive win him back? Either way, the Olesons are serving up one of the wildest emotional rollercoasters this side of Plum Creek. (Is it just me or are we kind of rooting for Team Nels & Mollie?)Tune in as we unpack this one, and celebrate the fact that—for one glorious episode—Nels Oleson said “I choose me.”Then, join us on Patreon where Dean and Alison talk all things Richard Bull!Links and Resources:Haven't signed up for Patreon yet? Remember the episode when they played Baseball and there was a giant brawl at the end? Or the time Nellie ruined a perfectly good wig or the time Colonel Sanders came to Walnut Grove? It's easy to forget, at its core, Little House on the Prairie is about the Ingalls family. And with over 200 episodes it's safe to say not all of them are necessary or contribute to the ongoing story of this Pioneer family. Join me in this special edition episode as I share my thoughts and feelings (after reviewing all my notes from making this podcast series) of what an ideal viewing of the series would be. From the Ingalls piling into their family wagon in Wisconsin to Laura and her Monthly Crew at the Wilder Boarding House, Little House on the Prairie has a bit off filler we can trim off.

In this Meat the People episode, we go inside the finishing pen—literally—with Adam Wackel of Plum Creek Wagyu. Surrounded by 80 full-blood Wagyu cattle, each tipping the scale at over 1,000 pounds, Adam walks us through what makes his herd different: calm, well-treated animals raised with intention. We talk about the temperament of Wagyu and how low-stress handling directly impacts meat quality, marbling, and texture. Adam breaks down the difference between feeding corn versus force-feeding corn, especially in large-scale feedlots vs. small, local operations like his. Yes, he uses corn—it's Nebraska—but it comes from the farm next door, not a commodity mill. Everything is sourced locally, with care and transparency. We also dig into how Wagyu cattle behave differently from Angus, why scale matters, and what it takes to raise some of the best beef in the country. If you've ever wanted a behind-the-scenes look at ethical Wagyu farming done right, this episode delivers.Learn more about Adam's work and order his beef at plumcreekwagyubeef.comWorld Wagyu Council Health Benefits: https://worldwagyucouncil.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Health-Benefits-of-Wagyu-Beef-ISSUED-MAY-2025.pdf

In this episode of The Meat Dudes, we dig into a question that's been bugging us: Why isn't Wagyu beef taken seriously yet? We break down the perception problem, the misinformation, and why so many people still don't get what makes Wagyu worth it.We also shine a light on the Ranch Steak — an overlooked cut that's a game-changer when it comes off a Wagyu cow — and ask the hard question: Should steakhouse servers actually know where their meat comes from? (Yes. Yes, they should.) And yes, we walk back our hot take on the Wagyu hot dog — because when it's made right, it actually slaps. We finish with a field interview straight from the finishing pen at Plum Creek Wagyu, where Adam Wackel talks local feed, full-blood genetics, and how keeping cattle calm leads to better beef. You can almost hear the cows breathing.Marbling, myths, and meat-based redemption — let's go.

The memoir is a fascinating form to explore. I'm always intrigued as to how an author can adapt their life and fit it into the confines of a page. How does one capture all its complexities, contradictions, and fleeting moments, in a narrative that feels both honest and coherent? My guest today is Susanna Crossman, a British-French writer, essayist, and clinical arts therapist, who has just published Home is Where We Start with Penguin Random House. The book is her own account of growing up in ‘the fallout of the Utopian Dream' – in a politically revolutionary Community in the late 1970s. In the fascinating work, she blends memoir and social commentary, weaving philosophical ideas into the wider narrative of her own experiences with community and disillusionment. It was great talking with Susanna today, and I'm so pleased to be able to share her insightful, nuanced thoughts about literature in general. Susanna has recently started a Substack, which you can check out here. Susanna Crossman's four books were: On The Banks of Plum Creek, Laura Ingalls Wilder (1937) The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Milan Kundera (1984) Memoirs of Hadrian, Marguerite Yourcenar (1951) What is Ancient Philosophy?, Pierre Hadot (1995) Lit with Charles loves reviews. If you enjoyed this episode, I'd be so grateful if you could leave a review of your own, and follow me on Instagram at @litwithcharles. Let's get more people listening – and reading!

The Honeymoon is over. But did it ever really begin? Laura and Almanzo continue to argue, what seems like, all the time. Things go into overdrive when Laura starts to assume her husband is having an affair with a young songwriter who has recently returned home to Walnut Grove. In the meantime Charles is trying to install a new picture window at the little house at Plum Creek. Trying to. I know it's based on a book series, but are Laura and Almanzo suppose to eventually get along in the T.V. series? How long has Almanzo been playing guitar? Why doesn't Albert ask to move out to the Prairie Air BnB instead of staying up in the loft?
