Tune in as Shawn Murphy (Men Who Like Men Who Like Movies Podcast) rejoins the program to review and recap Color of Night, the 1994 erotic thriller that takes us on a wild and atmospheric ride with a color-blind psychiatrist who gets himself caught up in a murder mystery and a steamy affair simultaneously. An intense BTS feud that led to different cuts of this movie being released, drawing inspiration from giallo, the therapy group in the plot acting like a dysfunctional family, and 90s-era queer representation that's both progressive for its time and dated for our contemporary world comprise just a few of the subjects that get coverage in today's episode. Directed by Richard Rush, Color of Night stars Bruce Willis, Jane March, Rubén Blades, Lesley Ann Warren, Scott Bakula, Brad Dourif, Lance Henrikson, Kevin J. O'Connor, Andrew Lowery, Eriq La Salle, Jeff Corey, Kathleen Wilhoite, Shirley Knight, and Erick Avari. Shelley RobertsonTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Shelley Robertson. Shelley is an actress who you may have seen in: Chicago Med, General Hospital, NCIS, The Morning Show, The Rookie, This Is Us, Shameless, Timeless, Agents of Shield, and so much more. In this episode, we chat about why she became an actress, and some of the pitfalls and hurdles associated with that career. Shelley then shares some personal stories about managing finances as an actor, and juggling work while being a single mom. Next up, we give some love to mutual friend and previous guest D. Elliot Woods. We do discuss some of the industry changes that help single parents working on set, and I ask her why she still takes acting classes after having so much success. She shares with me some of the important lessons she has learned in various acting classes; including the most valuable lesson she learned from Eriq La Salle & Michael Beach; in their class. We touch a little bit on the book that she is in the process of writing, and why she thinks it is necessary. Tune in as Tyler Hewitt (Dumb-Dumbs & Dice) makes his long-awaited return to the program for a review and recap of One Hour Photo, the 2002 film that presents plenty of stalkery suspense and a nostalgic freeze-frame of the antiquated era of photo processing. The masterful skill that Robin Williams shows off in his against-type performance as lonesome photo lab tech Sy Parrish, the numerous times when this movie sneaks in brand licensing, the questionable stab that Matthew McConaughey has been taking at the self-help industry, and the irritation that Tyler expresses toward implausible workplace behavior in the film comprise some of the talking points for this episode. Written and directed by Mark Romanek, One Hour Photo stars Robin Williams, Connie Nielsen, Michael Vartan, Dylan Smith, Gary Cole, Erin Daniels, Clark Gregg, Eriq La Salle, Paul Kim Jr., Nick Searcy, and Jim Rash. If you were winning awards and clearly dominating your industry, would you let yourself tap out or would you instead take the leap to test out your skills in a new industry? The most recent episode of That Moment with Daymond John featured the incredible Eriq La Salle, who dove headfirst into the latter. It takes a confident but strategic person to try your hand in a whole new skillset, but Eriq knew he had what it took to pivot from a successful acting and directing career to an author status (without skipping a beat when it comes to continuing to create and star in new film/TV!). He joined me on That Moment to share the moments that led to him releasing the latest book in his fiction series and what he has in the works on and behind the camera. Eriq shared some powerful insights that listeners will definitely learn from, like: Where the drive to become an author actually came from What to do when you've done literally everything right…but still can't succeed Navigating industries that are known for being cutthroat and forming genuine relationships Finding inspiration as you try to figure out what's next for yourself Why you need to prepare before the opportunity is even there Making room for everyone in your space and the importance of representation And more! Mark interviews actor/director/producer/writer Eriq La Salle about his latest novel LAWS OF ANNIHILATION and his life-long passion for storytelling. Prior to the interview, Mark shares comments from recent episodes, thanks Patrons, provides a personal update, and shares a word about this episode's sponsor. You can learn more about how you can get your audiobooks distributed to retailers and library systems around the world at starkreflections.ca/Findaway. In their conversation, Mark and Eriq talk about: How Eriq had always wanted to be a writer Joining the high school drama club in junior high with the idea that they'd be able to put on the plays that he would write Being told by the drama teacher that he had to audition, and how that started the "acting bug" that took him through a multi-decade career acting, directing, and producing The way the author desire resurfaced about a dozen years ago The prequel story to The Martyr Maker series (which appears in the end of LAWS OF DEPRAVITY) and why Eriq wrote it The concept behind The Martyr Maker franchise Loving movies and television and being inspired by the storytelling conventions there The way each of the three main characters leads a little bit more in the first three books in the series Eriq's work as Executive Producer for several years on Chicago PD Directing and Executive Producing Dick Wolf's first show launched into streaming on Amazon Prime A minor character in the series (known as "The African") who was fashioned after the Luca Brasi character in The Godfather and who will return in a later book in the series How it took 10 years to find a publisher, and Eriq's DIY experience self-publishing The importance of understanding and participating in the grass-roots style marketing as an author Having to do a lot of marketing work even when you're with a larger publisher The way that the status of "celebrity" can sometimes work against you Eriq's respect for each medium and how to re-think, and re-learn in his unique roles within them The importance of humbling yourself How the marketing person that Eriq had hired and worked with eventually became his agent Feeling that he is a better writer of fiction novels than of screenplays, despite his years of experience as an actor, director, and producer The intention cinematic writing that Eriq did when crafting The Martyr Maker series Enjoying collecting "useless trivia" and how that can aid in the research aspect of writing a novel Giving credit to the technical advisors Eriq has worked with on shows like ER and Chicago PD The various first readers that Eriq works with Being an old fashioned paper book reader Eriq's great respect for librarians The delightful feeling of seeing your book in various bookstores of all sizes, including indie bookstores, big box stores, and airport bookstores Doing several events in New York for the week the book is launching, including a special "On the Couch with Eriq La Salle" The importance of listening to the messaging The understanding that "we are blue collar artists" Advice Eriq would offer to writers who are working at it and haven't yet found their success And more . . . After the interview, Mark reflects on a few of the things Eriq talked about, as well as a subtle, but important way Eriq spoke about the "team" he works with as an author. Emily finally got her life together and edited an episode!! In this episode, your favorite Hallmark Queens chat about birthdays, weekend getaways, and childhood trauma from divorced parents! What a trifecta. The movie for this week is A Second Chance at Love, Hallmarks newest (like it's still on Hallmark Channel kinda new) movie that stars Gloria Reuben, Alvina August, Jarod Joseph, and Eriq La Salle. One couple's marriage is amiss and rather than facing it, our main character immerses herself in her divorced parents' dating lives by setting them up on a dating app. What could possibly go wrong, right? This week I review the newest Hallmark film called A Second Chance at Love starring Eriq Lasalle, Gloria Reuben, Alvina August and Jarod Joseph. I have to say it was great to see Eriq and Gloria on my screen together again. It had been almost 30 years since their ER days. And they look good. Let's start a petition for them to be on more Hallmark movies. Lol. This movie was in my opinion about cutting the umbilical cord. Children, when you're married and have your own family, I think it's time to start letting your parents make their own decisions and live their own lives while you concentrate on yours. Lol. It is also about well as the title claims it to be a second chance at love. I liked this movie. It had me laughing. The chemistry between Eriq and Gloria was smoking. And I honestly think, as irritating Alicia was at certain points in the movie, Alvina carried this movie well. She held her own with such TV legends. Lol. I give it 3/5 stars Spring into Love movies 4/4 Just One Kiss Review 4/11 A Royal Romance Review 4/18 Love, Classified Review 4/25 A Tail of Love Review Every Thursday I will also be releasing When Calls the Heart episode reviews. Diana's pick Coming to America (1988) is an often quoted movie at extended family dinners. Ryan was introduced when a different Eddie Murphy/John Landis movie was unavailable to stream. As it would have affected her predictions for the future, Diana refused to watch the sequel until the podcast episode was completed. An extremely pampered African prince travels to Queens, New York, and goes undercover to find a wife that he can respect for her intelligence and strong will. Stars Eddie Murphy, Shari Headley, Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, John Amos, Madge Sinclair, Eriq La Salle, Paul Bates, and Samuel L. Jackson. LaRoyce Hawkins is our guest this week. For eight seasons, he's been in your house as Officer Kevin Atwater on NBC's Chicago PD. Turns out he's also a talented rapper, comedian, poet, and has a strong sense of his "assignment" in life and business. I loved his story about how he chose acting as a career path, and how he relies on mentors like his grandfather and Eriq La Salle to help him stay focused and out of his comfort zone. Some good stories and big lessons in this one. Chicago P.D. airs Wednesday nights at 10/9 central on NBC. The full series is also available on Peacock. @nbconechicago https://www.nbc.com/chicago-pd Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Today, we’re going back to 1988 for John Landis’s romantic comedy, Coming to America. Eddie Murphy stars in this story of an African prince who rejects the idea of his arranged marriage, so he travels to America to find true love while feigning that he’s a broke immigrant to be sure of their sincerity. Eddie is joined by Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, Eriq La Salle, with bit parts played by Louis Anderson, and an appearance by Samuel L Jackson. Coming to America made ~$300 million from a $36 million budget, won two Oscars, and became a classic comedy of its time. But does it hold-up? Listen in as Jon, Colin, and Brent debate the proper way to clean a royal penis as we figure out if this one is more Soul Glo or Soul No.

Eric Deines is no Eriq La Salle, but we still love him.
Writer-director Eric Haywood started out as a successful Atlanta-based music video director, but since moving to Los Angeles has written for cable and network television, has written a TV movie, and has written and directed many short films. You’ll love hearing how he has approached every step of his interesting journey through the industry!Eric was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He began his career as a music video director while still enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in filmmaking. After relocating to Atlanta, Eric went on to direct and produce videos featuring such artists as Usher, Cee-Lo Green, Outkast, New Edition, Ice-T, Tupac Shakur, and legendary Parliament-Funkadelic bassist Bootsy Collins. His video for Bay Area rapper E-40’s song “Sprinkle Me” was selected by MTV and XXL Magazine as the #10 Greatest West-Coast Rap Video of All Time.Eric then turned his focus to writing, and moved to Los Angeles, where he landed jobs as a writer on all five seasons of Showtime’s Soul Food: The Series, and NBC’s police drama Hawaii. Along the way, he has periodically returned to his filmmaking roots, writing and directing three short films (Staring at the Sun, Intersection, and Nick of Time), each of which has screened at a number of film festivals around the country. Most recently, Eric wrote the Hallmark Channel Original Movie Relative Stranger, starring Eriq LaSalle and directed by Charles Burnett. Most people no Emmy Award Winning Actress, Tasia Valenza from such remarkable characters as Poison Ivy in the Batman: Arkham Series, Venisa Doza in Star Wars Resistance, Shaak Ti in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Sniper Wolf in Metal Gear Solid video games. Eriq La Salle is a dear friend from back in the ER days when he played Dr. Peter Benton (and earned him three NAACP Image Awards and nominations for a Golden Globe Award and three Primetime Emmy Awards). What excited me about hosting him on the podcast was exploring the ways artists must proactively co-create their career longevity. To sustain a career that spans an entire adulthood requires deeply honed skills and next-level talent, not to mention a good amount of right time-right place luck. So much of winning in the arts is totally out of our control. However, what is in our control is the mental tenacity necessary to withstand challenging times which every artist will inevitably face. It’s exactly this angle I wanted to explore with Eriq because he is an MVP of his own, very successful, career destiny. He has not missed a beat in creating a deeply rewarding expansive creative career. While he was winning as an actor, he was already creating his path as a writer and while he was pumping out novels, he was masterminding a deeply rich new chapter as a director and producer. This fascinated me because so many artists, especially actors, can be myopic about their gifts. As artists, we need to cultivate an expansive vision about our talents and see one road as an opening for several potential paths. We get into what a flexible, non-fixed mindset is as an artist and how to navigate your B and C plans while slaying your A plan. If you are in the arts, or a self-made creator of any kind, I think you’ll find this exciting and informative. Also, if you’re an actor, Eriq gives some not-to-be-missed insider tips about the long game. Eriq is currently the executive producer (and sometimes director) of NBC’s Chicago PD. More about Eriq: is an American actor, director, writer and producer known for his performances in the films Coming to America (1988) and especially as He attended the Juilliard School's Drama Division for two years as a member of Group 13 (1980–84),[2] then attended New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Graduate Acting Program[3 In 1988, La Salle starred alongside Eddie Murphy in the movie Coming to America as Darryl Jenks. In 1994 the medical drama ER premiered on NBC with La Salle starring as Dr. Peter Benton. He held the role until leaving during the eighth season. He returned to ER for three episodes during its 15th and final season, including his uncredited appearance as himself in the opening of "Heal Thyself" to tell the audience of the death of the show's creator Michael Crichton. Also during season 15, he returned to direct an episode.[6]

After some Oscar talk (02:01), the bros take a look at the 2017 film Logan (16:16), which Marco had never seen before. It’s bloody and shocking and surprisingly moving and we really liked it. Patrick Stewart is crushing it, and poor Eriq La Salle’s family just didn’t deserve that.
Chipperish Media/How Story Works chief Lani Diane Rich sat down with me to see which Son Of Sam stories worked -- Investigation Discovery's, Smithsonian's, or the 1985 CBS version starring Martin Sheen -- and the one that's so bad it's good may surprise you. Why do David Berkowitz's crimes still preoccupy us? What's with every single Sam-doc producer having to put several minutes of public-domain disco on the soundtrack? And who decided Eriq LaSalle should only have one line? We'll try to answer all these questions in our latest episode. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

"When you think of garbage, think of Akeem!" Eddie Murphy was riding high through the 80s. John Landis, on the other hand, had had a string of flops, not to mention a very difficult Twilight Zone trial. Considering their success together with Trading Places, Murphy thought Landis could use a boost and brought him on to direct his fairy tale film Coming to America. It was the hit Landis needed, and yet another film cementing that Murphy was king of the box office. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we wrap up our Eddie Murphy series with Landis’ 1988 film, Coming to America. We talk about why the film doesn’t hold up that well for us now nearly 30 years after its release, even if it did seem to hold up more at the time. We chat about the script problems and director/actor relationship problems this film had, and how things ended up. We look at the talent and what they’re bringing to the table – Murphy, Arsenio Hall, John Amos, James Earl Jones, Madge Sinclair, Shari Headley, Eriq La Salle and more. And speaking of talent, we discuss Rick Baker and his amazing effects work to transform Murphy and Hall into several other characters and how these not only hold up for us but also how they triggered an entirely new direction for Murphy’s career to head. And we talk about the music and how 80s it feels. It’s a fun conversation about a film that neither of us connected with nearly 30 years after we first saw the film. But it’s still fun to watch and discuss, so check it out!
