This lecture will reflect upon a life-time of research arising from Balfour's legacy and what it has meant for Palestine and Palestinians, past and present. This event is the fourth in a series of events organised by the CBRL Kenyon Institute marking the centenary of the British Mandate in Palestine.
In this episode, I am joined by two Hungarian scholars, Gábor Scheiring from Bocconi University and Kristóf Szombati from the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology. Gábor and Kristóf have worked extensively together in opposition politics but also in academia, co-authoring multiple papers on the political economy of Hungary. We discuss together the ideology and class-coalitions sustaining Hungary's current authoritarian regime. We talk about racism, labor exploitation, democratic suppression - but also social policy initiatives such as the Public Works Program, which solved unemployment by making the state an employer of last resort… with far-reaching political consequences. For this evening of conversation, Inès Seddiki interviewed Jean Beaman about her research, including her book, Citizen Outsider: Children of North African Immigrants in France. Dr. Beaman then posed some questions to Inès about her organization, GHETT'UP. Finally, the two discussed racism in France more broadly re COVID-19 and police violence. They also offered their thoughts and perspectives on the recent protests in France for Adama Traoré and in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Jean Beaman is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She was previously on the faculty at Purdue University and has held visiting fellowships at Duke University and the European University Institute (Florence, Italy). Her research is ethnographic in nature and focuses on race/ethnicity, racism, international migration, and state-sponsored violence in both France and the United States. She is an Editor of H-Net Black Europe, an Associate Editor of the journal, Identities: Global Studies in Culture and Power, and Corresponding Editor for the journal Metropolitics/Metropolitiques. She earned her B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from Northwestern University. Inès Seddiki is a French-Moroccan activist and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) professional living in the banlieues of Paris. Inès graduated with a masters degree in corporate social responsibility from Grenoble Graduate School of Business and a bachelor's degree in economics from Pierre Mendès-France University. In 2016, she founded GHETT'UP, an organization dealing with youth empowerment and leadership in the underprivileged areas of Paris, the banlieues. 5000+ youth have been impacted by the organization's programs.
Puerto Rico is often depicted as a “racial democracy” in which a history of race mixture has produced a racially harmonious society. In Remixing Reggaeton: The Cultural Politics of Race in Puerto Rico (Duke University Press, 2015), Petra R. Rivera-Rideau shows how reggaeton musicians critique racial democracy’s privileging of whiteness and concealment of racism by expressing identities that center blackness and African diasporic belonging. From censorship campaigns on the island that sought to devalue reggaeton, to its subsequent mass marketing to U.S. Latino listeners, Rivera-Rideau traces reggaeton’s origins and its transformation from the music of San Juan’s slums into a global pop phenomenon. Reggaeton, she demonstrates, provides a language to speak about the black presence in Puerto Rico and a way to build links between the island and the African diaspora. Petra Rivera-Rideau is an associate professor of American Studies at Wellesley University. She earned her B.A. at Harvard University and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. Her research examines the cultural politics of race in Latin American and Latina/o communities. Rivera-Rideau is primarily interested in how ideas about blackness and Latinidad intersect (or not) in popular culture, especially popular music.
