(Anita Gould / Flickr) Ketchikan Indian Community and two conservation groups are asking a federal court to halt an old-growth timber sale in Alaska's Tongass National Forest. The Shelter Cove sale offers about 4 million board feet of timber as part of the larger South Revilla project near Ketchikan. The groups argue logging would harm subsistence resources, wildlife. and remaining old-growth forest. KIC President Gloria Burns says Indigenous knowledge cannot be treated as an afterthought in decisions about Tribal homelands. The groups are seeking an injunction while the court considers their broader lawsuit challenging the South Revilla project. Bids for the timber sale are scheduled to open October 20. Tesuque Casino in Santa Fe, N.M. (Courtesy Tesuque Casino) Prediction markets are becoming an issue for Native American tribes who argue they are threatening their gaming revenues and thus their ability to fund vital services. As KUNM's Jeanette DeDios (Jicarilla Apache and Diné) reports, New Mexico tribes and state lawmakers are looking at taxing them. Prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket are online platforms where people wager bets on an outcome around future real-world events, like sports or elections, but because of the way they are regulated they do not usually pay taxes to states. Tribal gaming in New Mexico, however, contributed over $151 million to the state's general fund in the last fiscal year. Tribes fear that prediction markets will lead people away from gambling in tribal casinos to online markets, which people can access on their phones while on tribal lands. and tribal officials say that is a violation of the gaming rights they negotiated with the state as sovereign governments. Tribes also use those revenues for things like early education programs, housing, and healthcare. During a meeting of the Indian Affairs Interim Committee last week, Navajo Nation Council Delegate Eugenia Charles-Newton describes how prediction markets are also targeting minors to bet. Right now, with prediction markets, we know that a 10-year-old standing next to the sheep camp, they can go onto a website and they can wager a bet. Prediction market websites are classified as federal financial exchanges rather than traditional gambling platforms, which allows them to market to people 18 and older. With weak age verification on social media, minors have been reported making wagers. Prediction markets currently exist in a legal gray area and gaming officials want the state to tax them, but lawmakers raised concerns. Those include whether taxes would affect current gaming compacts, how online activity would be tracked on tribal lands, and who would collect revenue. The Mescalero Apache, along with Isleta, Pojoaque, and Sandia pueblos are suing Kalshi. The New Mexico Attorney General also filed suit in June. They are among a number of lawsuits across the country against the platforms. In response, the federal government is suing New Mexico to block the state from enforcing its gambling laws against prediction markets. (Courtesy Native Voters Alliance Nevada) Voting disparities have deep roots for people of color and new research shows New Mexico’s Native voters are likely to face numerous roadblocks at the November ballot box. Roz Brown has more. Native voters in New Mexico face many barriers to voting, including disproportionately high rejections for voter registration and mail-in ballots. The new Native American Rights Fund and Blockwell Consulting report, “Obstacles Persist”, analyzes data collected by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission from the 2020, 2022, and 2024 general elections. The report found rejected voter registration applications increased by an average of 200% in counties where Native Americans make up at least a quarter of the population. Senior staff attorney Allison Neswood says the report confirms what Native communities have long known to be true. “Their registration is getting denied, their ballots [are] getting rejected, and all of this really adds up to the systemic disenfranchisement of our people in our own homelands.” The report also outlines how disruptions at the U.S. Postal Service had a significant impact on Native voters. Even as overall mail-in voting numbers declined between 2020 and 2024, the rejection rate of ballots in areas with larger Native populations increased by 134%. Earlier this month, the U.S. Supreme Court blocked President Donald Trump's executive order, calling on the Postal Service to oversee mail-in ballots, a move plaintiffs successfully argued would have severely restricted voting by mail. The report's recommendations include expanding automatic and same-day registration to areas with larger Native populations, and paying poll workers comparable wages. Neswood says more investment is needed for voting infrastructure in Indian Country. “Making sure that our Native communities have polling locations in a reasonable distance from where they live, making sure they have registration opportunities, making sure that they can participate in mail voting.” The study focused on counties with high Native populations, including Cibola, McKinley, and San Juan counties in New Mexico along with Apache and Navajo counties in Arizona. Research by the Brennan Center in 2024 found voters of color are more likely to turn out when they live in jurisdictions where their ethnic group is the majority. Bad Bunny has had a busy week, with new recognition, political attention, legal developments, and another major fashion collaboration making headlines. At the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, Bad Bunny won Best Latin for “NUEVAYoL,” a track from his Puerto Rican-focused album DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS. He was not at the ceremony, and has not publicly explained his absence. The award follows a highly successful world tour that ended with additional performances in San Juan in August. The song's celebration of New York's Puerto Rican identity has also helped keep Bad Bunny's broader cultural message in the spotlight. The album blends contemporary urbano with salsa, plena, bolero, and jíbaro influences, and “NUEVAYoL” incorporates elements associated with classic Puerto Rican music. Another major story involves Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. His campaign released a Portuguese adaptation of Bad Bunny's “Lo Que Le Pasó a Hawaii” in a video promoting Brazilian sovereignty and criticizing outside pressure from the United States. The rewritten lyrics refer to rivers, beaches, and rare-earth minerals. Agence France-Presse reported that the campaign version had attracted nearly seven million social-media views. There is conflicting reporting over authorization. TVT News said Bad Bunny's team authorized the use, while AFP reported that a Workers' Party source said the artist had not granted rights. Bad Bunny himself has not been publicly reported as endorsing Lula's campaign. The original song examines cultural displacement, gentrification, tourism, and the fear that Puerto Rico could lose control of its identity and territory. In legal news, Digital Music News reports that the long-running “Frankenstein” reggaeton copyright case is continuing. Plaintiffs are asking a judge to reconsider a ruling that favored Bad Bunny on part of the dispute. A hearing on that request is tentatively expected in late October. Fashion followers are also watching Bad Bunny's ongoing partnership with Adidas. Design Scene reports that a new Gazelle Indoor “Solar Gold” colorway is expected in October, with a reported retail price of 140 dollars. The bright yellow-and-black design follows other recent releases, including Badbo models that arrived in late September. Bad Bunny's influence therefore remains visible across music, politics, entertainment law, and fashion, even as he appears to be taking time away from the spotlight after his tour. Sermon Outline: "When Who He Is Meets Where You Are" I. Grace in the Mundane & For the Assignment Meeting God in the Everyday: God does not just appear in high-profile moments; He meets believers in the routine, daily rhythms of life (00:48:44). Grace Arrives at the Step of Faith: Illustrating through personal testimonies (preaching in San Juan, Puerto Rico to 8,000 people) and a Miss America ticket analogy, Pastor Rhonda emphasized that grace for an assignment is released when you step through the door, not beforehand (00:50:13). The Exam Already Passed: Sharing a story about a Bible college professor who marked all exam answers correct in red ink, illustrating that righteousness and spiritual victory are gifts given because Christ took the test for us (00:52:59). II. Moses at the Burning Bush (Exodus 3:1–14) Outliving Past Consequences: After 40 years on the backside of the desert in Midian (14,600 days), Moses thought his story was over due to past murder and rejection. God demonstrated that a wilderness season cannot cancel His purpose (00:56:32). Holy Ground Wherever You Step: When Moses turned aside to the burning bush, God commanded him to take off his shoes. Under the New Covenant, because Christ lives in believers, every workplace, home, and assignment becomes holy ground (01:00:58). Overcoming the "Imposter Syndrome": Addressing insecurity and the inner soundtrack of "Who do you think you are?", God answered Moses' insecurity ("Who am I?") not with self-confidence, but with God-confidence: "I will be with you" (01:05:05, Exodus 3:12). III. The Power of the Name: Yahweh (I AM THAT I AM) The Self-Existent One: Unlike humans who are defined by parentage, origin, or beginning, God revealed Himself as Yahweh (I AM THAT I AM)—eternal, self-sustaining, uncreated, and needing no external fuel (like the unconsumed bush) (01:13:08, Exodus 3:14). Breathed Presence: Referencing the Hebrew root Haya and the divine name Yahweh, God's very name matches the rhythm of human breath (01:15:50). Jesus, the Great I AM: Connecting Old Covenant revelation to Jesus' "I AM" statements in John (Bread of Life, Light of the World, Door, Good Shepherd, Resurrection and Life), proving that where Christ steps in, human inadequacy is completely swallowed up (01:28:40). IV. Four Core Kingdom Principles God Takes the Initiative: History is His story; God initiates pre-blessed plans (01:17:31). God Moves in Response to Prayer: Corporate crying out invites divine intervention (01:18:01). God is the Supplier: When we carry anxiety or sleeplessness over assignments, we carry what belongs to God. God stays up so we can sleep (01:20:28). What happens when you build your life around the things that make you come alive - not someday, but right now? Monica Aguilar, known on trail as "Moss," is an artist, long-distance hiker, and everyday explorer who has intentionally built a flexible life around creativity and adventure. After graduating from UMass Amherst, she spent a season working in Alaska before thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail in 2018. Since then, she's continued exploring on foot and by bike, including the Pacific Crest Trail and more than 3,000 miles on the Continental Divide Trail. In this conversation, Monica and I talk about what keeps drawing her back to long trails - the community, the challenge, the highest highs and lowest lows, and the chance to experience a place slowly rather than simply passing through it. We also get into fear and risk, including difficult snow travel on the PCT and the decision to change course in Colorado's San Juans when challenge began moving beyond her comfort zone. But Monica's story is also about designing a life around what matters. She's built enough flexibility into her work, spending, and art business to disappear onto a trail for months at a time while still saving for what she calls "future Moss." That philosophy overlaps beautifully with something I talk about often: living your great life right now without ignoring the future. El oso, el león y el águila son, aparte de unos animales extraordinarios, los motivos más habituales de la heráldica europea. Su rastro sigue visible en nuestros días en los escudos de familias, ciudades y países. El oso fue el primero en aparecer porque era el animal más grande de Europa. Eso significaba que cualquiera podía encontrarse con uno y verlo con sus propios ojos. Celtas, germanos y eslavos lo asociaban a la fuerza y al valor. En tanto que en Europa no había monos el oso era, además, el animal más parecido al hombre, hasta el punto de que en el siglo XIII se diseccionaban para enseñar anatomía en las escuelas de medicina. La Iglesia, siguiendo a San Agustín, que quería erradicar los cultos paganos, lo convirtió en símbolo del diablo, la lujuria y la pereza. Sobrevivió en el folclore y en las armas de algunas ciudades importantes como Berna, Berlín o Madrid, cuyo oso junto al madroño recuerda un pleito en 1222 entre el concejo y el clero. Cuando nació la heráldica en el siglo XII su declive ya era imparable. La derrota de Alberto de Welf, apodado el Oso frente a Enrique de Brandeburgo, conocido como el León durante una disputa en el seno del Sacro Imperio selló simbólicamente el relevo. El oso terminó primero como animal de feria y luego como mascota infantil de peluche. El león era el rey de los animales en la cuenca del Mediterráneo desde la Antigüedad, pero luego desapareció de la simbología. Renació entre los siglos XII y XIII y se fue imponiendo poco a poco. Los leones europeos se habían extinguido hacía siglos, lo que los convertía en un símbolo más fácil de controlar para la Iglesia, que además contaba con una larga tradición bíblica de leones, empezando por el de Judá. Para depurar al león de sus rasgos negativos crearon el leopardo heráldico, un león que miraba de frente y que siempre tuvo muy mala fama. Los tres leopardos de los Plantagenet ingleses pasaron a llamarse leones a finales del siglo XIV para esquivar las burlas francesas durante la guerra de los Cien Años. En España el reino de León adoptó el animal por simple asonancia con la Legio VII. Ese león, el primer escudo propio de un reino europeo, se extendió por municipios, linajes y ciudades americanas como Caracas, Santiago de Chile o Ciudad de México. El águila, que había simbolizado en el mundo romano a Júpiter y a las legiones romanas, empezó a disputar la primacía al león a partir del siglo XIV. Carlomagno lo había recuperado antes como símbolo imperial, pero fue en el Sacro Imperio donde mayor fortuna hizo ya que allí se fundió con el halcón de los antiguos germanos. En el Sacro Imperio, de hecho, el águila pasó a representar al emperador y el león a sus vasallos rebeldes. Asociado desde entonces a la realeza, triunfó por completo como encarnación del poder a finales del siglo XVIII cuando los recién nacidos Estados Unidos de América se lo llevaron a su escudo. Poco después Napoleón hizo lo propio creando un águila de estilo romano para que simbolizase a su imperio. El águila fue adoptada más tarde por el nazismo, el nacionalismo árabe y varios países africanos después de su independencia. En España los Reyes Católicos la incorporaron por devoción a San Juan, Franco la resucitó y, tras su muerte, se retiró del escudo. El único superviviente animal en el escudo de España fue el león, que se cobró de este modo una venganza tardía. That is according to a new report that says those challenges can begin well before a voter reaches the ballot box. For the Mountain West News Bureau, Daniel Spaulding has more. The report from the Native American Rights Fund says voting disparities have deep historical roots. NARF analyzed federal data from 2020 through 2024 and found issues ranging from voter registration rejections to difficulties with mail-in ballots. In counties where Native Americans make up at least a quarter of the population, rejected voter registration applications increased by an average of 200%. Allison Neswood (Navajo) is a senior staff attorney at NARF. “Voting is not just one act. It's a series of steps and the report illustrates that Native people are more likely to get hung up every step along the way.” Neswood says addressing those issues will require greater investment in voting infrastructure across Indian Country. The study focused on counties with high Native populations, including Arizona's Apache and Navajo counties – and New Mexico's Cibola, McKinley, and San Juan counties. The event marked a quarter century of teaching and sharing songs and dances that leaders say had been absent from some communities for decades. KNOM's Margaret Sutherland traveled to the remote village for this story. On the first night of the Kingikmiut Dance Festival, fog settles over the runway in Wales. Three of the five scheduled visiting groups are grounded: Gambell, Savoonga, and Brevig Mission. But inside the Kingikmiut School gym, the festival began anyway with groups from Wales and Unalakleet. Sixteen-year-old Cain Seetook is one of the younger Kingikmiut drummers. “It heals my hurt and makes me happy. And I don't know. That's just it.” Seetook says he has been drumming since he was about one year old and practices with the Kingikmiut group once or twice a week. His cousin, 15-year-old Frank Komonaseak, is also part of the group, rotating between the drum line and the dance floor. “It feels good to be dancing again. It's an honor to be in this dance group again, to be singing and dancing. I grew up doing it, and I'm proud of who I am, and I'm proud of my cousins because they're all good dancers too.” Komonaseak moved back to Wales about a year ago after living in Anchorage for several years. He says he stopped dancing while he was away.
