What can Canada's death laws teach us about policy limits? Sarah and Beth examine Canada's medical assistance in dying (MAID) program, where assisted deaths now account for 1 in 20 deaths nationwide - more than Alzheimer's and diabetes combined. They trace how policies that began with terminally ill patients have expanded to include those with treatable conditions and mental health issues alone. When does personal autonomy go too far? Sarah and Beth explore the moral injury experienced by healthcare workers, question whether doctors should make ethical decisions, and examine what happens when individual autonomy becomes society's dominant value. How do you deepen friendships by sharing life stories? In Outside of Politics, Sarah describes a weekend exercise where friends told their complete life stories from birth to present, plus creative alternatives like wedding album tours and conversation games like Hygge. Under the federal Death in Custody Reporting Act, anyone who dies in law enforcement custody must be reported to the Department of Justice. A Marshall Project investigation into the data found that many in-custody deaths are reported inaccurately to the federal government, or not reported at all. One of many deaths that was reported inaccurately was George Floyd's. Marshall Project reporters Anna Flagg and Ilica Mahajan worked on this story and joined Minnesota Now to share more.
In 2013, 9-year-old Ella Roberta died from a severe asthma attack. She became the first person in the United Kingdom (and possibly the world) to have “air pollution” listed as the cause of death on her death certificate. Her mother, Rosamund Adoo-Kissi-Debrah, founded the Ella Roberta Foundation and has become a global voice for clean air. Globally, the World Health Organization says that air pollution is associated with 6 to 7 million premature deaths every year. Addressing the cause of these deaths would also go a long way to addressing climate disruption. And since talking about climate has become so politically fraught, should we reframe the conversation to focus on taking care of our air? Hour 2 opens with a heated follow-up on the MAGA hat controversy at St. Louis City SC. Marc breaks news that a listener—booted from the stadium for wearing the hat—had worn it before without issue, revealing the real trigger: a liberal fan's complaint. The show draws a clear contrast to other accepted political expressions at the venue—like Pride flags and “No Kings” shirts—proving the policy is being selectively enforced. Marc, Kim, and Ethan hammer the ideological double standard, warning it's part of a broader leftist push to silence conservative visibility. Nicole Murray jumps in with a spirited market update and shares bachelorette party plans in Philly—Marc and Kim tease her about yoga, hangovers, and zero sleep weekends. In Segment 4's “In Other News,” the crew tackles viral headlines: The Hulk Hogan cause of death Saudi amusement ride collapse injures 23 in a terrifying near-tragedy. WNBA viewership is up 21%—but Marc makes it clear: it's all Caitlin Clark. Justin Timberlake announces he has Lyme disease, raising eyebrows over his “mailed-in” concerts. Devastating day for the defense and a great day for the all-star Commonwealth team of Hank Brennan, Adam Lally & Laura McLaughlin. Karen Read's lawyer ignores the devastating black box car data shows John O'Keefe's phone stopped moving seconds after Karen Read's SUC crashed into him and instead harangues forensic data expert Shanon Burgess about how he presented his schooling on his CV in a previous case. But the jaw-dropper of the day was when Hank Brennan played the clip of Karen Read informing the “Body in the Snow” tv show crew that John O'Keefe died at approx 12:25 or 12:30. This confirms the black box data that Karen Read reversed into John O'Keefe at around 12:31:47am - 12:31:55am. John O'Keefe's phone stopped moving (adjusted for the clock drift) 12:31:47 am. Either Karen Read is psychic or she knows she fatally injured John when she chose to reverse into him at approx. 24 mph with her foot approx. 75 % down on the gas pedal with her infotainment system alarm blaring & flashing- warning Read she was about to hit John. Despite Read's car dire warning, Read never touched the brake.
