When Arturo O'Farrill was 19 years old, playing piano in a bar in upstate New York, he was spotted by Carla Bley—who promptly invited him to join her band. At the time, he was doing everything he could to distance himself from the legacy of his father, the legendary Cuban composer Chico O'Farrill. He avoided anything labeled “Latin” like his life depended on it. But as he tells it, the real turning point came when bassist Andy Gonzalez sat him down and played him the history of Afro Latin music. Arturo realized that the music he'd rejected might actually be his greatest treasure—and more complex and profound than he'd ever imagined. Since then, Arturo has built an extraordinary body of work as a composer, bandleader, educator, and activist. From founding the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra to creating his nonprofit Belongo—now building a major cultural center in Harlem—he's dedicated his life to music that carries meaning. Not just swing, but sting. “You can pretend that music is pretty noise,” he says, “or you can think it's only to soothe. But I don't believe that's the purpose of art.” In our conversation, Arturo opens up about identity, legacy, faith, creativity, and the urgent role of art in a broken world. For more than 50 years, Mulatu Astatke has been performing at venues around the world, inspiring audiences with his original genre of music known as Ethio-jazz.He recorded the volumes of ‘Afro-Latin Soul' with his band, The Ethiopian Quintet, in 1966. They were the first experiments of this new sound, fusing Ethiopian traditional notes with Afro Latin and jazz forms. Mulatu Astatke tells Vicky Carter how he created the genre of Ethio-jazz. She was hosted here in town from March 2-4 by the University of Louisville, where she spoke on campus for Women History Month and shared her journey documenting the Afro-Latin diaspora and Afro-Latina issues. On today's show, we discuss the origins of the program and why it is so important to highlight Afro-Latino culture in today's world; how the show has been received by audiences in the U.S. and Latin America; social justice and representation in media; challenges Afro-Latino communities have faced in preserving and celebrating their heritage; and sustainable development and ethical tourism the supports local communities and environmental conservation. An Indianapolis dance instructor is using movement to bridge cultures and educate the community.She's doing this through her unique fusion of modern dance with African and African American traditions.At Iris Rosa Dance Studio, movement is a language that speaks across generations and cultures. A choreographer, Rosa Santiago is a longtime educator at Indiana University Bloomington's department of African American and African diaspora studies. She blends modern dance with influences from the African diaspora, including Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Latin styles. She opened her dance studio in 2022 to expose the community to the diversity of dance and music.Seda Negra/Black Silk Dance Company is one of Rosa's dance groups within the dance studio. The dancers tell political, social and cultural narratives. Dancer Amelia Smith says she likes Rosa Santiago's style, and how she includes her students in the creative process.Rosa Santiago says its important for dancers to branch out and learn more than one dance genre. In 1980, Charles Wetli---a Miami-based medical examiner and self-proclaimed “cult expert” of Afro-Caribbean religions---identified what he called “excited delirium syndrome.” Soon, medical examiners began using the syndrome regularly to describe the deaths of Black men and women during interactions with police. Police and medical examiners claimed that Black people with so-called excited delirium exhibited superhuman strength induced from narcotics abuse. It was fatal heart failure that killed them, examiners said, not forceful police restraints.  In Excited Delirium: Race, Police Violence, and the Invention of a Disease (Duke University Press, 2024), Aisha M. Beliso-De Jesús examines this fabricated medical diagnosis and its use to justify and erase police violence against Black and Brown communities. Exposing excited delirium syndrome's flawed diagnostic criteria, she outlines its inextricable ties to the criminalization of Afro-Latiné religions. Beliso-De Jesús demonstrates that it is yet a further example of the systemic racism that pervades law enforcement in which the culpability for state violence is shifted from the state onto its victims. In so doing, she furthers understanding of the complex layers of medicalized state-sanctioned violence against people of color in the United States. Aisha M. Beliso-De Jesús is Olden Street Professor of American Studies at Princeton University and author of Electric Santería: Racial and Sexual Assemblages of Transnational Religion. Reighan Gillam is Associate Professor in the Department of Latin American, Latino, and Caribbean Studies at Dartmouth College.
