Greetings Glocal Citizens! This week Hélène Himmer, a French national with roots in the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, now based in Portugal joins me in conversation about her current work at African Futures Lab (AfaLab) leading a project on climate reparations. I met Hélène last November at FORGE: Harnessing Creative Arts for Reparatory Justice, a convening of artists, media, cultural workers, civil society, and government leaders across Africa, Europe and the U.S. to further the movement for reparations. The event took place in Accra, Ghana and featured Glocal Citizens Esther Armah (https://glocalcitizens.fireside.fm/guests/esther-armah), Makmid Kamara (https://glocalcitizens.fireside.fm/guests/makmid-kamara), and Nyamal Tutdeal (https://glocalcitizens.fireside.fm/guests/nyamal-tutdeal) as facilitators. In addition to meeting so many dynamic diasporans I was introduced to organizations like AfaLab, an international non-profit organization supporting racial justice movements in Europe and Africa through conducting research and developing policy and legal strategies to empower civil society actors and public and private institutions in their fight for justice and reparations. Currently the Policy and Advocacy Officer at AfaLab, Hélène is a committed activist and professional with a diverse background in human rights law, corporate social responsibility and international development. Her activism began in her early teens with a youth organization focused on education, youth rights and inclusion. She then spent several years working for racial justice in France. Moving to the corporate sector, Hélène worked in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in start-ups and technology companies. However, her passion for social impact led her to international organizations where she specialized in advocacy, project management and partnerships. Her work has focused on climate justice, peacebuilding, anti-corruption, women's empowerment, youth cooperation and inclusive societies across Europe, Sub-Saharan Africa and the MENA region. Power can be rapidly stripped away from individuals, or it can be taken away layer by layer. Not everyone makes it out of a cult, but life can become particularly meaningful when they do. A new purpose can arise for the person, more substantial than the grasp of mind control. Leaving an authoritarian cult is the experience that Dr. Debbie Haski-Leventhal, PhD, shared with us on this episode of Cult Conversations: The Influence Continuum. She found this meaning after a period of healing and self-exploration when she left the Kabbalah Centre. Her parents brought her into it when she was only five years old. She devoted her life to it as a chevre (hand-picked servants of Philip and Karen Berg, its leaders). She was able to escape by age nineteen. Debbie currently describes her role as “a professor of purpose and impact”, working with individuals and companies to make lives more meaningful. She crafted her book after decades of exploring what pro-social and satisfying behaviors bring to life. Her book is both inspirational and practical, laying out pointers from the model she developed. She believes strongly in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and works with business leaders to better utilize their human resources into meaning on both an individual and group basis. I must say, I loved this book, listened to it as an audiobook, and then bought it as a paperback and read it. It is a must-read book, in my opinion, for all survivors of mind control cults. It is an inspiration! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is becoming increasingly critical for both corporations and nonprofits. Our cohosts dig into the nuances and potential of CSR partnerships. Cohost Tony Beall begins by defining CSR as "what organizations commit to in terms of how they want to represent their brand to the community," encompassing environmental, ethical, social, philanthropic, and economic responsibilities. The duo discuss the strategic importance for fundraisers to understand these distinct CSR pillars to enhance their approaches. Cohost Julia Patrick admits, "I just lumped it all together," pointing to the common mistake nonprofits make. Tony expands on this concept, describing how nonprofits must align specifically with a company's CSR goals to effectively establish mutually beneficial relationships. The discussion explores the intersection between CSR and cause marketing. Tony differentiates the two clearly: "CSR is focused on doing good as part of the business operation…cause-related marketing is how you express what's happening, how you engage customers."Ethical alignment also becomes central in the conversation, citing the value for nonprofits to choose corporate partners whose activities align with their mission and values. Julia speaks to the weight of ethical decisions and the challenge when nonprofit leaders reject lucrative but misaligned partnerships. Tony concurs strongly, remarking, "You have to have those standards within your organization." The two also talk about the practical need for clearly articulated agreements through ‘Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs)', described as a necessary "formal handshake". This formality, rather than inhibiting relationships, provides clarity and aligns expectations, further nurturing a more sustainable corporate partnership. Finally, they emphasize relationship nurturing and the critical importance of asking corporate sponsors about their reporting and engagement preferences. Tony says powerfully: "It is so important that we understand what is valuable and important and motivates the individual donors and the corporate supporters."Find us Live daily on YouTube!Find us Live daily on LinkedIn!Find us Live daily on X: @Nonprofit_ShowOur national co-hosts and amazing guests discuss management, money and missions of nonprofits! 12:30pm ET 11:30am CT 10:30am MT 9:30am PTSend us your ideas for Show Guests or Topics: HelpDesk@AmericanNonprofitAcademy.comVisit us on the web:The Nonprofit Show
In this episode of Leadership on the Links, host Tyler Bloom sits down with Gina Rizzi, a leader in sustainability and inclusion in the golf industry. Through Radius Sports Group, ARCUS Marketing, and VRA Connect, Gina drives environmental stewardship, economic impact, and diversity. Gina also introduces the BMP Hero platform, a groundbreaking tool simplifying BMP guide creation and helping golf courses showcase environmental leadership. Additionally, Gina highlights her diversity efforts, such as PGA Vendor Match events and the VRA Connect platform, which supports over 5,000 diverse suppliers. Finally, we'll explore her work in economic impact reporting and the engaging “Turf Busters” segment, which busts industry myths with a mix of technical insights and humor. Let's dive into this impactful conversation with Gina Rizzi. What You'll Learn in this Episode: Sustainability and Marketing Expertise: Gina Rizzi leads Radius Sports Group, ARKIS Marketing, and VRA Connect, focusing on sustainability, marketing, and inclusion within the golf industry. BMP Hero Platform: Recently launched tool that streamlines the creation of facility-specific best management practice (BMP) guides for golf courses. (25:13) Key Quotes: “There's a lot of focus on DEI in the news right now. Speaking personally, as a female business owner, I would never want to receive business just to check a box because I'm a woman. I want to earn it based on merit. The same applies to the workforce. I wouldn't want to get a job just because of my gender—I want to be hired because I'm the best person for the role, period.” “The goal is that if all facilities can have their BMPs, then this is something that the RGCSA can share with legislators and hopefully prevent them from having to undergo these types of irregular kinds of rules and laws or legislation between cities." “When we talk about inclusion in the workforce, it's about reaching out to local markets, schools, colleges, universities, and associations—connecting with people in non-traditional areas, beyond just sports management programs.” Links and Resources Mentioned: Website: https://www.radiussportsgroup.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ginarizzi/ Email: Gina.Rizzi@radiussportsgroup.com

Mobilizing Investors to Build a More Sustainable Global EconomyAs the effects of climate change rise in prevalence, all facets of the global economy will be affected. In order to address many of the global environmental crises of today, such as biodiversity loss and extreme drought, entrepreneurs are looking into sustainable investment initiatives as a tool for change. Sustainable investing is a process that directs investment capital to companies and businesses actively working to prevent environmental destruction. Sustainable investments often follow an Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) framework, which seeks to promote socially conscious investments. Similar to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), which refers to a company's commitment to operating ethically, ESG goes one step further in providing an assessable outcome of a company's overall sustainability performance. Thus, ESG lays a foundation for investors in determining which corporations operate sustainably. Current Climate of Sustainable InvestmentFrom 2021 to 2026, institutional investment in ESG projects is expected to increase by 84%. The World Economic Forum recently published a report noting that over $200 billion is required annually in order to meet adaptation and resilience investment targets, which is three times the current funding. Such investing in adaptation and resilience could reduce exposure to climate risks and yield financial benefits for stakeholders involved. Although climate financing is slowly on the rise, there remains minimal progress in climate-vulnerable and high-emission countries. There are various types of sustainable investing, operating through registered investment companies, alternative investment funds and community investments. The US Sustainable Investment Forum identified 645 registered investment companies with $1.2 trillion sustainable investment AUM in 2022. Not only does sustainable investment cover private equity investments, but also cash, fixed income, and alternative investments. Sustainable investments, like conventional investing, receive a return on their investments. Reports from the Morgan Stanley Institute for Sustainable Investing found no financial trade-off between sustainable investing compared to traditional investment initiatives. Does sustainable investing provide hope for the future?Investing in sustainable industry, infrastructure, and business has the potential to provide a more climate-proof economy for all. For private investors, effective investments in areas vulnerable to climate change could reduce disruptions in the supply chain, thereby boosting labor productivity and lowering operational costs. As such, companies will have the tools in place to be able to respond to vulnerabilities when they arise while still maintaining a profit. Additionally, ESG investing has been proven to provide downside protection during social or economic crises according to the NYU Stern Center for Sustainable Business. Such protection may be pertinent in a world more susceptible to the adverse effects of climate change. Many studies corroborate such findings; a meta-study conducted by Oxford University in 2015 revealed that 88% of companies with robust sustainability practices demonstrate better operational performance, translating into higher cash flows and positive effects on investment performance.Greenwashing and ESG ConcernsOne concern within the world of sustainable investment is largely centered around the question of whether organizations will be willing to take more or less risk to achieve an impact. Companies that prioritize sustainability may be more volatile than traditional companies, creating fear around the uncertainty of consistent returns. Further, there is often confusion on how to make a good return on investment when choosing to invest in more socially responsible companies. The rise of sustainable investment has brought about potential concerns related to greenwashing, in which a company's ESG credentials or potential sustainability initiatives may be over-embellished, leading to falsified information. On the other hand, many investors prioritizing sustainable investment initiatives have received a surge in backlash against their new initiatives, mainly from Republican politicians. A recent study by The Conference Board revealed that 48% of surveyed businesses have experienced backlash to their ESG policies or activities, potentially deterring companies from further pursuing such initiatives. An increase in educational awareness is vital to inform investors of the benefits of sustainable investing and ways to do so responsibly amidst criticism. Who is our guest?Kirsten Spalding leads the nonprofit Ceres Investor Network, which supports global investor initiatives such as Paris Aligned Asset Owners, Climate Action 100+, and Net Zero Asset Managers. Nonprofit advocacy organizations like Ceres Investor Network are at the forefront of promoting sustainable business practices through mobilizing investors to build a more sustainable economy. One way some businesses try to leave a positive mark is through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The United Nations and the Australian Human Rights Commission champion CSR's potential, but not everyone is buying in. Employment lawyer Josh Bornstein argues that it might be nothing more than a façade. Kirsten holds a B.A. from Yale College in music, a J.D. from Hastings College of Law, and an M.Div. from Church Divinity School of the Pacific. For six years, she chaired the Center for Labor Research and Education, UC Berkeley and taught at the School of Law. Hong Kong has always been ground zero when it came to hospitality, tech, innovation and education. How this came to be, and was put to practical use was the subject of conversation with this week's guest, Richard Hatter. Richard has an extensive background in the hospitality space, opening many hotels in the Asia-Pacific market over the last 25 years. Richard's operations expertise led him to become an adjunct professor at Hong Kong Polytechnic University which opened up new doors, putting his hotel background, love for technology, a desire to teach, all together to enable Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives within the hospitality industry. In the competitive Asian market, innovation with technology was seen as a way to teach students. As GM of hotel ICON, Richard put a technology prototype, development and testing center working with suppliers and hoteliers, and at the same time being a teaching hub for hospitality students. First, this gave suppliers a chance to test their products and viability with real guests, providing the ability to make adjustments to ensure a successful launch. A secondary benefit of this being that the hospitality students would go on to lead the market and be familiar with the suppliers who's products were being tested. In terms of technology, everything from robotics to sustainability in uniforms and reducing food waste was tested. Richard believes that hotels today can learn from these methods. As a center for innovation and creativity it's very attractive to students and patrons alike. Students come for the education and hotel patrons desired more dynamic experiences during their stay. The hotels themselves could use the opportunity to update outdated systems.Tune in to this episode of Accelerate to learn more about the teaching hotels, and how education, hospitality, and innovation can become an ICONic experience.

I will be sharing with you two different definitions of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) from Investopedia and Oxford Research Encyclopedia. Let us differentiate the two definitions, today. First, CSR is for a company to be socially responsible, it needs to be accountable to itself and its shareholders. For the latter definition, CSR is a legitimate responsibility to society. CSR goes beyond the legal, ethical, and financial obligations that create profits. Today, let's talk about why this whole concept of CSR is garbage. Show notes: [13:58]#1 Your success does not mandate that you give charitably to others who have not achieved the same level of success as you have. [27:12]#2 CSR is a social justice "woke" term that is based on someone having more, being indebted to people who have less. [36:22]#3 The entire concept of social responsibility is a slippery term whose definition can be changed as needed. Sustainability is an important concept for businesses today, yet there is a lot of confusion about what it really means. People often think of sustainability as just protecting the environment, which is true to an extent. But there's more to it than that. It encompasses economic, social, and environmental aspects and involves finding ways to use resources in a way that meets the needs of current generations without compromising the ability of future generations to do the same.Sustainability is an umbrella term that focuses on creating a better future, both environmentally and socially. It encompasses steps to stop climate change, reduce water and natural resource misuse, as well as ensuring human rights, labor rights, animal rights, philanthropy, and charity are observed. Professionally this type of sustainability is referred to as ESG (environmental-social-governance). It is sometimes known by its other name: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).In this episode, John Pabon, a sustainability expert, covers the topic of sustainability and its importance for business owners. He explains why sustainability is a must-have for businesses and how to develop it in your organization.Snapshot of the Key Points from the Episode:[02:28] John's journey and why he's so passionate about sustainability.[05:08] Three top tips for sustainability.[09:35] The correct definition of sustainability.[11:31] John's superpower skill sets that have helped him in his journey.[14:04] Why is niching down a disadvantage at times?[16:39] John's greatest fight with businesses and how he has navigated that.[26:10] John's greatest achievement in his career. The world is a changing place, and with technology moving in consistently fluid ways, there's almost no way to keep up. As technology progresses forward, corporations, governments, and ultimately, societies, must find ways to adapt. Unfortunately, many of these "adaptations" have the potential to come at the expense of personal freedoms. Hyperbole aside, corporate America has gone through some concerning transitions over the last few years. Many of these decisions have been made, seemingly, without consideration of future optics or implications. Ranging from invasiveness in relation to the medical autonomy of employees to downright discrimination, it appears relatively clear that corporate America may need to evaluate its priorities... especially with future government litigation constantly on the horizon. Our bureaucracy-filled corporate future is one that is entirely dependent on agreement in addition to coercion. Since the 1950s, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has been a burgeoning ideology that many American institutions have adopted wholly. Why wouldn't they? Everything sounded perfect on paper, and it effectively solidifies a positive perception from the American public, right? What happens though, when Corporate Social Responsibility goes too far and engages in discriminatory practice? What happens when the government decides it's time to take it a step further? Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) is the "next step" in further politicizing corporate America. Whereas CSR has its limitations, ESG doesn't, and the future implications, which might sound good on paper, could also be absolutely catastrophic. Join the Wolf, the Bull, and Baewolf in episode 75 as they discuss Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance and how both of these ideologies are not only echoes of each other, but potentially intertwined. It's an interesting conversation and one that hopefully provides you with some awareness of some of the silly bureaucratic futures that we may be living in quite soon. She built her foundation at Unilever, and over the last decade, she has spearheaded nationwide programs in the areas of unemployment, health, financial literacy, sports, and career planning. She has established the structure and strategy for nudge units, set their national agendas, and designed behavioral interventions to serve public policy. After consulting with Bain and Company Middle East she moved onto a senior role in her native Saudi Arabia; leading the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) function at a Mckinsey subsidiary and creating nationwide community programs. From there, she spent a decade as a partner at the foremost boutique consultancies in the GCC, leading social impact and behavior change efforts. Her passion is advising on behaviorally informed policies across sectors. Wiam believes strongly in spreading knowledge about the implementation of behavioral change across industries and has published a variety of articles on the practical application of behavioral science and has an MBA from UC Berkeley as well as a master's from the London School of Economics and Political Science. In continuing to have a more global view of the representation here on The Brainy Business, Wiam is our first guest from Saudi Arabia. I'm excited to share some of her work with you on a specific CSR project on the show today. Show Notes: [00:40] Today I am very excited to introduce you to Wiam Hasanain. Wiam is a seasoned social impact consultant, with 20 years of experience operating at the intersection of policy reform, societal development, behavior change, and civic engagement. [01:58] Her passion is advising on behaviorally informed policies across sectors. [04:27] Wiam shares about herself, her background, and how she found herself in this space. [07:30] She is from Saudi Arabia and has spent the majority of her life there. [08:16] She worked with a client on a corporate responsibility program that focused on helping the youth in Saudi Arabia find their career path. [10:41] They agreed that they could help open the youths' eyes to other careers that were out there as opposed to the traditional STEM careers. [12:04] Their project was such a success that it ran for three years in a row and kept growing each year. [14:29] It is really nice for her to see how the social norm has changed and know that they were part of this change. [16:31] The parents along with the career counselors had to work together to really help the students bridge the intention to action gap. It was also important for the parents to see that these other jobs were acceptable as well. [18:20] The parents had a different hang-up than the youth. (Know all your audiences and plan accordingly!) [19:55] Wiam shares how they reduced sludge and friction in their project and made things easier. [21:41] They had over double-digit changes in their perceptions of certain careers. The short-term response was very promising. [22:27] An RCT is a randomized control trial. [24:03] You are always adding sludge and removing sludge in various ways. [24:54] Wiam shares how they added some sludge to help with the problem they were trying to solve. They made it difficult for students to leave without going through all the exhibits (to help increase exposure to careers that wouldn't have been a focus previously). [26:57] They utilized augmented reality in some of the exhibits so that would be where the majority of the students were drawn (and these were typically for the non-traditional careers to broaden horizons). The most desired careers were also at the end, so you had to have some exposure to the other careers no matter what. [28:08] There are times when customer experience, behavioral science, and corporate responsibility all come together so be more concerned with your end objective. [30:18] Whether you think about it or not you are influencing the decisions that people make with the way you put the booths in the space even – so you should definitely think about it! [31:43] Don't think anything is too small to be considered a small step towards behavioral change. Be thoughtful and intentional. [32:52] Melina's three tips for setting up your own experiment are to keep it small, be thoughtful, and test often. [34:29] Melina shares her closing thoughts. [35:41] My upcoming book, What Your Employees Need and Can't Tell You, is now on presale and will be in a bookstore near you on October 11, 2022. [36:21] If you enjoy the experience I've provided here for you, will you share about it? That could mean leaving a rating/review or sharing the episode with a friend (or 10!) Thanks for listening.
