Welcome to Season Three of Talking ‘Ship, a podcast dedicated to discussing fictional television relationships and how they relate to our non-fictional lives. Brought to you by the Bleav Podcast Network. This season your hosts Megan Fitzgerald and Victoria Hoffman discuss Issa and Lawrence of HBO’s Insecure. Issa and Lawrence aren’t your classic TV couple. They aren’t a “will they won’t they” love story, they don’t have a romantic arc filled with huge realizations and grand gestures. (SPOILERS AHEAD) These two start out together, break up, and through the course of the four seasons they slowly make their way back to each other. The show still has at least one more season, and fans are divided on the fate of Issa and Lawrence. Will they end up together? SHOULD they end up together? This season we will deep dive into their relationships and try to answer those two questions. This episode is all about the early days of Issa and Lawrence on the show, who they are and how they are when we meet them. The pilot of Insecure essentially opens with Issa questioning everything: her career, her identity, and most importantly, her relationship. Lawrence and Issa have been together for five years, the majority of their twenties, but the state of their relationship is not so hot when we meet them. After introducing ourselves, we’ll kick off this episode with our initial takes on Insecure and this couple. Why did we choose to talk about them? Do WE think they belong together? Then we’ll start to unpack their relationship… We’ll talk about Issa’s identity crisis, how her desperate need for something to change leads to a wandering eye. However, Lawrence does nothing to stop her from doing so. How does his rut prevent him from being present with Issa. Should Issa have been more supportive of him? Was she capable of it?We’ve all known a couple in an Issa/Lawrence situation (or *AHEM* we’ve been that couple). We’ll wrap up the episode by giving our advice to all the couples out there spending their twenties on the couch. What advice would we give?Tune in next week for our discussion on Daniel, the breakup, and how it all went down for Issa and Lawrence. This week on Good Bye To All That TV Editor Alex Marcus (@MediaThinkings) is joined by new PopBreak contributor Lovey McPherson (@IAmLoveyToo) to discuss the Season 4 finale of HBO's Insecure, created by and starring Issa Rae. In this episode we discuss all the ins and outs of the Molly/Issa rift that dominated this season. We also get into the Molly's struggles keeping the spark alive (and managing messy interpersonal drama) with Andrew, Issa/Lawrence reunion, who we think was this season's breakout character, and the surprisingly powerful Postpartum Depression storyline that dominated the finale.
Lena & Kisha recap and discuss Insecure S4 E10 - Lowkey Lost. Baaaaaabyyyyy, there is so much to unpack here that all the likka in all the stores couldn’t have prepared us for this insurmountable pile of dirty diapers dropped on us - and LawrIssa. This BONUS episode of Insecure finds us in an alternate reality where Condolavirus proves she is not only the gift that keeps on giving, but she’s also apparently with ALL the shits. After Lawrence and Issa find their happiness with each other and commit to a possible future together this bit...I mean, Canola Oil pops up and let’s us know that not only does Lawrence have poor dick control, he’s also not the “nice guy” husband material he portrays himself to be when he responds to her unexpected unplanned and unwanted - by Lawrence - pregnancy. Lawrence reveals the news to Issa following a night long journey to track down Tiffany after she runs away to get a break from her new mommy duties. Molly takes Drew to a work function which becomes the catalyst for them to finally discuss their struggles. TELL US: What’s next for our favorite crew? How will Issa & Lawrence work their way through the big news? Will we meet Simone’s real dad next season? Has the friendship between Issa & Molly been mended and rekindled? Can we get more than comedy from Kelli? If you have a movie, TV show, or Netflix original you want us to review, send us a DM and we’ll shout you out in the review - the blacker the show or movie, the better the chances that we’ll actually check it out. xoxo, Lena & Kisha! Lena & Kisha recap and discuss HBO’s Insecure S4 E9 - Lowkey Tryin’. Starting back where we left off last episode Issa & Lawrence have continued to get it in over the last few weeks. They are exploring their new selves with each other and are really enjoying what they are finding - and we enjoyed watching. A meet up with fine ass Nathan has the potential to cause issues as Issa struggles with finding a way to keep things “casually friendly” between them, but Lawrence remains unbothered. Molly’s therapist unsuccessfully tries to subtly convince salt truck Molly to consider a different approach when dealing with people who have wronged her, but as usual, Molly can’t see the wrong in her ways. As Issa’s relationship with Lawrence is growing closer, Issa and Molly seem to be heading for a permanent break up thanks to Molly’s Twitter fingers sending unintended mean girl texts to the wrong person. TELL US: It looks like Issa has a choice to make: will she pick sexy ass husband material Lawrence or fine ass Nathan (or both #lightanddark)? Will they find LaToya before the season ends? If you have a movie, TV show, or Netflix original you want us to review, send us a DM and we’ll shout you out in the review - the blacker the show or movie, the better the chances that we’ll actually check it out. xoxo , Lena & Kisha! Is there hope for Issa & Lawrence??? I am excited to review Season 4 ep. 8 of Insecure on HBO.
Tamu and Mallory read Trisha R. Thomas's Nappily Ever After and compare it to the Netflix adaptation. Let's just say there were high expectations which were sadly not met. However, both the book and movie are pioneers for moving natural hair into the mainstream; hopefully the next movies and books about natural hair will be even better. Moral to the Story: We are beautiful regardless of what comes out of our heads. Other Fun Topics Discussed: The protagonist is really a selfish human. She cut her hair off and had no new growth as a person. Mallory liked the first chapter of the book. Communication is important in relationships. Don't get blasted and share feelings because you may end up engaged. Book break up vs. Insecure breakup between Issa & Lawrence. Mallory wondered if the movie was for white people to get an idea of black women & their hair. The movie's theme is "if a black man approves" Most Ridiculous Movie Quote: "Men want realness" Anything with a dick can still be a dick. Women & beauty standards. Sex in the shower can be a thing on wash day. Miraculously Sanaa's character can braid, but was unable to do her own hair. Don't assume because someone is wearing a scarf that they have cancer. Mallory found the sexism in the movie! Tamu talks about the moment when she cut her hair off. Mallory finds the misogyny in the final pool scene between the father and mother! Bad@Love Remakes this Movie: Would have been better to see someone with more power in their hands. Myth Busted: Going natural is not cheap, nor is it quick. The World According to Mallory: Online dating = Love resumes so use grammar and spell check. Tamu compares the movie to bad tequila. ____ Artwork by Kerriann Art: https://www.instagram.com/artbykerriann/ Follow us on Instagram: www.instagram.com/badatlovepodcast Tweet us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/badatlovepod Visit our website: www.badatlovepodcast.com Email us: badatlovepodcast@gmail.com
The Ringer’s Hannah Giorgis and Alison Herman look ahead to the season finale of HBO’s ‘Insecure’ by first celebrating the nuanced character developments in Season 2 (2:50), highlighting the show’s place among the summer TV landscape (8:15), and giving recognition to the showrunners’ even-handed approach in tackling the issues facing black employees in the workplace (10:40). Then they voice their expectations about how the finale will address the protagonists’ various romantic relationships (19:40), whether ‘Insecure’ will head the route of a sitcom or a more in-depth social commentary (23:30), and whether perhaps the Issa-Lawrence relationship will be reconciled (27:00).
