This episode features a conversation with Jessica Alter and Krisserin Canary of https://www.techforcampaigns.org/ (Tech for Campaigns). After Trump's Muslim ban in 2017, tech entrepreneur Jessica Alter couldn't take it anymore and asked a few of her fellow tech workers if they were interested in volunteering their skills to help Democratic campaigns, and Tech for Campaigns was born. Tech for campaigns is now the permanent tech and digital arm for Democrats, offering access to best-in-class talent with their 15,000 volunteers focusing on state races. Jessica and Krisserin, a state director in charge of flipping the Texas State House, talk to Nancy about why they focus on state races, catching up with the Republicans who are 8-10 years ahead on tech and digital, and why no matter what happens on Election Day, they both know they will have left it all on the field.

Jessica Alter is the Founder/CEO of Tech For Campaigns. She was also one fo the first guests we hosted on 'This is Your Life in Silicon Valley'. A lot has changed in the three years since we interviewed Jessica - the organization she built grew massively. We ask Jessica why democrats are still way behind on technology, and why we should be worried about state elections. We ask Jessica about why Democrats are perceived to be tech-savvy, yet spend very little money on digital tactics to help boost their campaigns. Jessica shares some shocking anecdotes of just how behind the Democratic party is when it comes to digital strategy, and why that's concerning for the long term future of the party (unless something is done now). We dig into the importance of state elections, and why in many cases they ultimately determine the entire fate of the country. And how Republicans understood this early and invested accordingly. We ask how Tech For Campaigns is potentially turning the tide in this regard. The podcast covers a lot of heavy subject matter, including the future of the country, climate change, and the current political environment. If you are a politics buff, and want to know more about the dynamics of elections, you won't want to miss this episode of This is Your Life in Silicon Valley.

Jessica Alter woke up on Wednesday Morning, the 9th of November 2016, and did not take a 'mental health day'. She got to work. What started as a Google Doc to organize like-minded individuals ended up becoming a large scale progressive movement called Tech For Campaigns. Alter, a multiple time technology founder and executive, began using techniques she learned during her time in industry to consolidate large groups of people. Alter's organization has influenced multiple elections, and she's just getting started. How did she start Tech for Campaigns? What's her take on the tech industry, Silicon Valley and politics? We learn more in this episode.

Jessica Alter has been starting and growing some of Silicon Valley's most impressive companies for her entire career, but her latest endeavor, Tech for Campaigns, is her most important startup yet. What started as a simple Google Doc shared among her friends and colleagues in the tech world to see who was interested in providing tech expertise to Democratic campaigns following the election of Donald Trump has since morphed into a full-fledged organization with an army of volunteer digital talent ready to be dispatched to progressive and centrist campaigns at a moment's notice. On episode 13 of Next Gen Dem, Jessica and I discuss how Tech for Campaigns came to be, how we can ensure technological innovations live on in future elections, why we need to focus on the state level, and how Democrats need to take a page out of the Chicago Cubs' playbook.
