Dr Vincent O'Malley FRHistS FRSNZ is an award-winning and bestselling historian who has written and published extensively on the history of Māori and settler relations in New Zealand. His book Voices from the New Zealand Wars/He Reo nō ngā Pakanga o Aotearoa (BWB, 2021) won New Zealand's premier book award for non-fiction in 2022, and he received a Prime Minister's Award for Literary Achievement that same year. In 2023, he was awarded the Royal Society of New Zealand Te Apārangi's Humanities Aronui Medal. Dr O'Malley is a Fellow of the Royal Society Te Apārangi and a founding partner of HistoryWorks, which specialises in Treaty of Waitangi research. His publications include:"Kingitanga and Crown: New Zealand's Maori King movement and its relationship with the British monarchy." The Coalition government has paid its respects to the Maori King at Tuurangawaewae Marae. Along with dignitaries, the Greens and the diplomatic corp, they made-up the final powhiri before Kiingi Tuuheitia's burial tomorrow. Ministers Shane Jones of NZ First and ACT's David Seymour both spoke on behalf of the coalition and Teanau Tuiono spoke on behalf of the Greens party, political reporter Lillian Hanly is there spoke to Lisa Owen.

The Maori King's chief of staff says his national hui exceeded expectations. Around 10-thousand people attended the hui which was held in response to concern about the Government's Māori policies. National's Maori Development Minister Tama Potaka went - but there were no representatives from other coalition partners Act or NZ First. Kiingitanga Chief of Staff Ngira Simmonds told Tim Dower that there was unity, peace and harmony. A right royal mess. The High Commissioner to the UK, Phil Goff, has apologised to the Maori King for not following tikanga at an event in London. The faux pas happened during a gathering of New Zealand's Coronation delegation. The Prime Minister is describing the situation as "regrettable" and a "mistake". Tensions between the Maori King Movement and the Government are expected to be patched up quickly. A function at the High Commission in London for the King's Coronation didn't follow tikanga, prompting a Kingitanga spokesman to interject. High Commissioner Phil Goff started the ceremony without a karakia, and didn't acknowledge the prior coronations of Maori Kings and Queens. Professor of Indigenous Studies Rawiri Taonui says that Goff has already apologised, and we need to respect him for that.
