Monday, 2 December 2024   “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.' Matthew 5:27   “You heard that it was said to the ancients, ‘Not you shall commit adultery'” (CG).   In the previous verse, Jesus spoke to the disciples about not getting out of prison until the last penny had been paid. This is the idea behind the law. When there is law, there is a possible violation of the law. In violating the law, one can then be sentenced and punished according to the standard of the law.   But Jesus has been teaching that the standard of the Law of Moses is actually more stringent than simple external observance. He will begin to highlight that thought again by saying, “You heard that it was said to the ancients.”   As in verse 21, He addresses a teaching that has already been set forth long ago to the people. A teaching was spoken to them and they were to abide by it. It should be noted that some manuscripts do not include the words “to the ancients.”   If it was inserted into the text, it was probably for the sake of conforming to the previous instance in verse 21. If it was dropped out of the text, it was probably because this is a command directly quoted by the Lord to the people. As such, someone may have decided that the words shouldn't be there because no additional commentary is attached to what is said, as was the case in verse 21. Either way, what was said was, “Not you shall commit adultery.”   This is the seventh commandment as recorded in Exodus 20:14. Despite it being one of the Ten Commandments, it was also a teaching that was passed down by the spiritual leaders of Israel. In fact, it may be that the people didn't even realize it was a precept of Moses. Rather, it was something taught as binding upon the people as it is in many cultures.   Jesus will provide insight into this teaching that will go far beyond what was either taught or considered.   Life application: In 1631, Robert Barker and Martin Lucas, the royal printers in London, published a reprint of the King James Bible. A copy of that reprint is now worth between $55,000 to $85,000. This is because it has become known as the Wicked Bible. Other names for it are the Adulterous Bible or the Sinners' Bible.   The reason for the names is that it is based upon a mistake made by the compositors. In the Ten Commandments of Exodus 20:14, it says in the KJV, “Thou shalt not commit adultery.” However, whether truly a mistake or an intentional change, the word “not” was left out, “Thou shalt commit adultery.”   Along with that, Wikipedia describes a second error that was found in the print –   “The 1886 Reports of Cases in the Courts of Star Chamber and High Commission (which gives the Bodleian Library manuscript Rawlinson A 128 as its source) lists this as one of the ‘two grossest errors', among ‘divers other faults'. The other is a misprint appearing in Deuteronomy 5: the word ‘greatness' appearing as ‘great-asse' [meaning a donkey], leading to a sentence reading: ‘Behold, the LORD our God hath shewed us his glory and his great-asse'. Gordon Campbell reports that there are no surviving copies of the book that contain the second error (‘great-asse'), but that in three of the surviving copies there is an inkblot where the missing ‘n' would be, suggesting such a mistake may have been covered up in these copies. He also notes that, at the time of the Wicked Bible's publication, the word ‘asse' only had the sense of ‘donkey'.”   Because of the lack of current evidence, some have suggested that the second error was sabotage by other printers on the surviving copies. However, when the court was held, neither of the publishers suggested the possibility of sabotage. Either way, because of the nature of the error, the king had their printing license revoked, and they were fined 300 pounds, an enormous sum at the time, equaling $72,863.42 today.   Considering the penalty for making an error in a printed copy of the Bible levied upon these two, what do you suppose God will do when you purposefully or negligently trifle with His word? Be sure to treat the Bible with the utmost respect it deserves.   Glorious God, Your word is precious and holy. May we never trifle with its sacred contents. Amen.

“I concede.” After a dramatic - and bloody - week of protests on the streets of Kenya, President William Ruto has agreed to ditch his unpopular finance bill. In an address to the nation he said that it was clear that Kenyans “want nothing” to do with the bill which would have introduced controversial tax hikes. Protesters say they would have hit the poorest who are already struggling with rising living costs. On Tuesday, parliament was set ablaze and lawmakers hid in the basement garage after voting for the bill. At least 22 people were killed in the protests. Now President Ruto says he will enter into a dialogue with the young people who have led the protests. For Africa Daily, Alan Kasujja speaks to protesters outside Kenya's High Commission in London – and gets an explanation of what was behind both the bill and the protests from Julians Amboko, an Economist and Business Journalist based in Kenya.

Peter Lewis: Surveillance of Indian diplomats in Canada led to allegations around Sikh killing, official says

Heather du Plessis-Allan Drive

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 22, 2023 8:46

The allegation of India's involvement in the killing of a Sikh Canadian is based on surveillance of Indian diplomats in Canada, including intelligence provided by a major ally, a Canadian official told The Associated Press on Thursday. The official said the communications involved Indian officials and Indian diplomats in Canada and that some of the intelligence was provided by a member of the “Five Eyes” intelligence-sharing alliance, which includes the U.S., Britain, Australia and New Zealand, in addition to Canada. The official did not say which ally provided intelligence or give details of what was contained in the communications or how they were obtained. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation first reported the intelligence. The revelation came as India stopped issuing visas to Canadian citizens and told Canada to reduce its diplomatic staff as the rift widened over allegations by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of suspected Indian involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a 45-year-old Sikh separatist. Ties between the two countries have plunged to their lowest point in years after Trudeau told Parliament Monday there were “credible allegations” of Indian involvement in the assassination on Canadian soil. Nijjar, a plumber who was born in India and became a Canadian citizen in 2007, had been wanted by India for years before he was gunned down in June outside the temple he led in Surrey, a suburb of Vancouver. Speaking Thursday on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly, Trudeau acknowledged the complicated diplomatic situation. "The decision to share these allegations on the floor of the House of Commons was not done lightly,” he said. “There is no question that India is a country of growing importance and a country that we need to continue to work with." “We are not looking to provoke or cause problems but we are unequivocal around the importance of the rule of law and unequivocal about the importance of protecting Canadians.” The bombshell allegation set off an international tit-for-tat, with each country expelling a diplomat. India called the allegations “absurd.” Canada has yet to provide public evidence to back Trudeau's allegations, and Canada's U.N. ambassador, Bob Rae, indicated that might not come soon. “This is very early days,” Rae told reporters Thursday, saying that while facts will emerge, they must “come out in the course of the pursuit of justice.” "That's what we call the rule of law in Canada,” he said. Meanwhile, the company that processes Indian visas in Canada announced services had been suspended. Canadians are among the top travelers to India, with 277,000 Canadian tourists visiting the country in 2022, according to India's Bureau of Immigration. Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi blamed the visa suspension, which includes visas issued in third countries, on safety issues. “Security threats being faced by our High Commission and consulates in Canada have disrupted their normal functioning,” Bagchi told reporters. He gave no details on the alleged threats. The announcement quickly rippled across Canada, especially among people with ties to India. Maitreyi Bhatt, a 27-year-old Indian citizen whose partner is Canadian and needs a visa, was distraught because her wedding is scheduled for late October in India, when he was to meet her family for the first time. “I've been crying all day,” she said. “It's so difficult. I was just so excited for him to meet my family.” She said the venue is booked and the couple has non-refundable flights. She said her partner went to the Indian Consulate in Toronto but was escorted out by security. “People like me are just caught up in this and it's just not fair,” she said. Sukhwinder Dhillon, a 56-year-old grocery store owner in Montreal, said he had a trip planned to India to see family and sort out his deceased father's estate. Dhillon, who came to Canada in 1998, makes the trip every two or three years and has lost two family members since he was last home. “My father passed, and my brother passed,” Dhillon said. “I want to go now. ... Now I don't know when we'll go.” Bagchi, the Indian foreign ministry spokesman, also called on Canada to cut its diplomatic corps in India, saying they outnumbered Indian diplomats in Canada. The Canadian High Commission in New Delhi said Thursday that its consulates in India were open and continue to serve clients. It said some of its diplomats had received threats on social media, adding that Canada expects India to provide security for its diplomats and consular officers working there. On Wednesday, India warned its citizens to be careful when traveling to Canada because of “growing anti-India activities and politically condoned hate-crimes.” India's security and intelligence branches have long been active in South Asia and are suspected in a number of killings in Pakistan. But arranging the killing of a Canadian citizen in Canada, home to nearly 2 million people of Indian descent, would be unprecedented. India has criticized Canada for years over giving free rein to Sikh separatists, including Nijjar. New Delhi had accused him of links to terrorism, which he denied. Nijjar was a local leader in what remains of a once-strong movement to create an independent Sikh homeland, known as Khalistan. A bloody Sikh insurgency shook north India in the 1970s and 1980s until it was crushed in a government crackdown in which thousands of people were killed, including prominent Sikh leaders. While the active insurgency ended decades ago, the Indian government has warned that Sikh separatists are trying to stage a comeback and pressed countries like Canada, where Sikhs comprise over 2% of the population, to do more to stop them. At the time of his killing, Nijjar was working to organize an unofficial Sikh diaspora referendum on independence from India. New Delhi's anxieties about Sikh separatist groups in Canada have long been a strain on the relationship. In March, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government summoned the Canadian high commissioner in New Delhi, its top diplomat in the country, to complain about Sikh independence protests in Canada. Signs of a broader diplomatic rift emerged at the summit of the Group of 20 leading world economies hosted by India earlier this month. Trudeau had frosty encounters with Modi, and a few days later Canada canceled a trade mission to India planned for the fall. A trade deal between the two is now on pause. - by Rob Gillies, APSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The American Army in Germany, 1918–1923: Success against the Odds (UP of Kansas, 2021) by Dean A. Nowowiejski fills a gap in American military and political history through thorough research and a compelling narrative of the Rhineland occupation. After the armistice ended the fighting on the Western Front in World War I, the Third US Army marched into the American occupation zone around the city of Koblenz, Germany, in December 1918. American forces remained there as part of an “inter-Allied” coalition until early 1923. Nowowiejski reintroduces us to a successful military-diplomat, Major General Henry T. Allen, who faced two major challenges: build an efficient army and handle the complexity of working with the Allied powers of France, Britain, and Belgium in the Inter-Allied Rhineland High Commission (IARHC). Allen's ability to balance the interests of the French with those of the occupied Germans made him an indispensable participant in the High Commission. As the French sought revenge and added security against Germany, Allen moderated their actions with diplomatic skill. When the French sent forces into Germany in 1920 and 1921, Allen ensured that the US zone around Koblenz remained free of French interference. These achievements were without the support of the administration, and Congress had no desire to take part in European affairs. Allen also had to create a competent American army in the Rhineland so that the Allied powers and the Germans would respect American views and interests. He successfully took a large number of new recruits, who replaced World War I combat veterans, and molded them into a professional fighting force. As a result, the American Forces in Germany became an exemplar for the entire US Army and a symbol to the Allies and Germans of American power and resolve. This force competently accomplished the difficult task of postwar occupation according to the highest international standards. The US administration made the decision in 1922 to radically cut back the size of Allen's army, and in 1923 to remove all US troops from Germany. The author analyzes this withdrawal as a “missed opportunity” for US leverage on diplomatic developments in Europe. Dean A. Nowowiejski is the Ike Skelton Distinguished Chair for the Art of War and director, Art of War Scholars Program, US Army Command and General Staff College. Dean A. Aldo speaks to HRH Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands about why she feels education is in dire need of a radical rethink. A passionate plea to create genuine equality between child & teacher, stepping away from tests & exams and aiming to achieve measurable progress through the process of ‘shared learning'. Guest Introduction:  When my next guest joined the Dutch Royal family through her marriage with Prince Constantijn in 2001, it very soon became apparent to the Dutch people that this Princess was not only here for the ribbon cutting formalities but keen to make a positive difference in any way she possibly could. From nature & wildlife preservation,  circular economies to Education. This ‘Power Princess' is here to get some work done.  In 2004 she founded the Stichting Lezen & Schrijven (freely translated Foundation for Reading & Writing) to effectively attack the public secret of illiteracy ongoing in her country.  17 years later this organisation has had a tremendous impact notably having supported  tens of thousands of people from all corners of the Netherlands to make reading and writing accessible to all. Her activism to improve the state of education and the environment did not stop there. As a Special Envoy for UNESCO on Literacy and Development and as a Literacy Expert for the High Commission of the European Union to ensure changes could be realised on a top-down level.   But also through starting admirable  initiatives like Missing Chapter  to specifically help children become more  aware of societal problems at hand.  There are simply too many accolades, chairships and  patronages to mention so I won't go through all of them but very worthy of looking at  are the series of books Princess Laurentien has written to increase a child's understanding on sustainability and the environment around the character Mr. Finney, as well as her fairy tale writing skills that she deployed  with other renowned Dutch children's book writers.  Seemingly Princess Laurentien can do it all. Raising awareness, funds and connecting people  to find a solution for topics that matter. And that she wasn't anywhere near done, became clear when she founded the Number Five Foundation in 2017 together with her husband to find an answer to the big questions that require our attention today:   The team at Number 5 are here to make a strategic difference and to create a positive impact  way by connecting the right people with each other -  they have already worked on many assignments but one project that caught my attention is :  The creation of an Alliance on Digital Togetherness involving key players from both private as well as public world to better understand all the changes that come along as we develop further into this Digital Era. The Number Five Foundation keeps an open mind in which equality is its highest value and has carefully integrated the UN's Millennium Development Goals into its DNA. Lots of work to be done led by a Princess who is more than ready to rumble! You can check out the website of the Number Five Foundation here: https://www.numberfive.community
