My long-time friend, Peter Scott Ruben, is the best guitar player I know, having personally watched him jam with some of the great rock and blues musicians of the seventies (Joe Perry in his pre-Aerosmith days and Kim Simmonds of The Savoy Brown Blues Band are two who immediately come to mind -- I read that Simmonds died two years ago in England and the band had to break up after an amazing fifty-five year run). Since then, Peter has fronted his own bands, and has also carried on his father's legacy as leader of the premier special events orchestra/band in Philadelphia, through which he met "the great one," Frank Sinatra, at a White House gig the orchestra was playing during the Reagan administration back in the 1980's. He also donned a wig a few years ago and played as Eric Clapton in a Cream tribute concert (and I seem to recall he even played a set as Jimmi Hendrix). In addition to his amazing playing, he knows way more about music than anyone in my social orbit so, now that he has embarked on an Act 3 career performing a Frank Sinatra and Bobby Darin one-man tribute show (having bought performing rights to the original Nelson Riddle and other Sinatra/Darin charts), I thought it would be fun to pick his brain here on Pizza Quest regarding why he thinks Sinatra is the greatest performer of all time as well as to see if together we could create a top ten list as well as a Mt. Rushmore top four list of the greatest of the greats. It was so much fun recording this episode -- as you will see and hear -- that I plan on inviting him back to do a similar retrospective on the greatest guitar players and also another on the best bands and performing groups of our time. Peter and I used to stay up all night during our college days talking about stuff like this, so I know he's game for it, as you will hear in this conversation in which we explore not only Sinatra's greatness but also dive deeply into the why and how of what made him the GOAT (and why Bobby Darin was the prince in waiting until he died way too young). So, as we like to say, it's more about the quest than it is about the pizza, and this time around we jump into Peter Ruben's quest for what distinguishes the good from the great when it comes to musical artists. The topic may have changed, but the game remains the same -- and the quest never ends....

This sermon was preached by Tim Simmonds at the Fallowfield site of Christ Church Manchester on Sunday 6th April 2025 from Exodus 16:1-17:7.
In this exploration of church membership, we're reminded of the profound mystery of Christ and His body - the Church. Drawing from 1 Corinthians 12, we see how each of us is an integral part of this living organism. In a world that champions individualism, convenience, and materialism, we're called to a radically different way of life. The Church isn't just an institution; it's a family bound by covenant love, mirroring God's steadfast commitment to us. As members of Christ's body, we're invited to shift from self-centered living to embracing a mission larger than ourselves.

This week, we discuss the recent news that Imogen Simmonds tested positive for Ligandrol, a selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM) known to enhance muscle mass and strength. Simmonds has denied intentional use, attributing the positive test to intimate contact with her partner, who was unknowingly taking Ligandrol to improve his physique. We explore the details of this case, its implications for her career, and the broader impact on the sport. We then sit down with Mike Phillips, the new Ironman New Zealand champion and course record holder, to hear how his race unfolded and what this result means for the rest of his season. Finally, we recap all the action from Ironman New Zealand, breaking down the key performances, race dynamics, and standout moments from Taupō. Join the hosts as they uncover the story of 19-year-old Sian Simmonds, a young woman with her whole life ahead of her. In 1993, while living in Surrey, B.C, Sian discovered unsettling truths about a well-respected doctor, a man trusted by the community but hiding dark secrets beneath his white coat. Determined to take a stand, she refused to stay silent. But before she could get justice, she was silenced in a horrific way. The investigation into this doctor's past exposed something far worse than anyone had imagined—decades of abuse, victims left unheard, and a system that allowed him to continue for far too long.
Today on People Doing Physics, we're delighted to welcome Charlotte Simmonds, an astronomer with an incredible journey and a woman on a quest. Of all the guests we had the pleasure to welcome here, Charlotte stands out as one of the most determined, driven by an unshakable fascination for the universe, and our place within it. But when the time was right, she finally embraced her first love and passion and navigated her way through the various challenges that academia invariably presents. Now a postdoc in the Galaxy Formation and Evolution Group at the Cavendish, it looks like she's found her rightful place in the universe and is already preparing for her next move. With Charlotte, we'll talk about taking chances, the importance of representations in science and her efforts to demonstrate that no matter who you are and how different you may be, there's a place for you in science if you want it…Useful linksDetails on Charlotte's research are on the Galaxy Formation and Evolution Group website.Watch one of Charlotte's talk: "Unveiling the Mysteries of the Early Universe with JWST", part of the Cambridge Physics Centre lecture seriesTo learn more about the Cavendish Laboratory, or if you are interested in joining us or studying with us, go to the Cavendish website.Share and join the conversationHelp us get better by taking our quick survey. The transformative power of God's grace takes center stage in this exploration of Saul's conversion in Acts 9. We're reminded that God's grace doesn't just save us - it saves us into His church, bringing us into profound union with Christ. When we hurt, Jesus feels it personally. The story of Saul, the church's archenemy turned apostle, showcases how God's grace brings powerful change, often starting with our hearts rather than our circumstances.

A new bill looks to make universities less 'risk adverse' over freedom of speech. When introduced in March, it will amend the Education and Training Act and require universities adopt a 'freedom of speech' statement. They'll also have to report on its commitment yearly. Tertiary Education Minister Penny Simmonds says this will ensure they have policy and procedures around allowing and promoting possibly controversial issues. She explained there are also requirements about having to record and being transparent about complaints. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Conversations ensued and a plan was created to take vodka made in New Zealand to the United States market. They developed a recipe for their vodka that is produced from whey. Show me an equestrian entrepreneur and I'll show you someone who is dedicated, getting their hands dirty daily, and always looking for ways to improve and grow, both personally and professionally. The only downside to all that? We're not often known for making self-care a priority in our list of to-dos and must-dos for the day. Taking care of your horse? Absolutely. Taking care of yourself? Not so much. But, if you don't take care of yourself, your chances of building a business that you enjoy AND will be sustainable for the long term go down quite a bit. That's why Ifa Simmonds with Ifa Fit is breaking down some practical ways you can incorporate self-care into your routine—even if you start with just 5 minutes a day. Many of you may already be familiar with Ifa Simmonds, perhaps at one of his rider fitness sessions at Equine Affaire, through his online programs, or even an equestrian publication. He's passionate about rider fitness, but as you'll hear, he's also a fellow entrepreneur in the equestrian space. AND, he's passionate about self-care. Show Notes (also known as “Where to read a quick summary of what we talked about here and get links I mentioned.”) are over at Stormlily.com/139 FREE Goal Setting Cheat Sheet → Stormlily.com/goals
Public swimming pools are more than just concrete and water. Often, they are the heart of a community, a place to exercise, to meet people and connect. Paralympic gold medallist Ellie Simmonds explores what it takes to design and build a swimming pool, and asks why they are so important in a post-pandemic era. She joins award-winning Dutch architects VenhoevenCS as they sign off their biggest project to date - the aquatic centre for Paris 2024. Their lead architects talk us through their plans for the new pool, looking at sustainability, accessibility and safety. She also hears from British architect, author and swimming advocate Chris Romer Lee about the importance of public pools, and why he thinks more of us should be getting into the water.
