There's concern about how many people drop out of apprenticeships, according to new reports. Vocational Education Minister Penny Simmonds has told a conference more than half of trainees aren't completing training. She says it's driven by a number of reasons, but she's pointing the finger at the previous Government incentivising training. Simmonds says it means many signed up despite not being that interested - and didn't complete their apprenticeship. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week on Talking Triathlon we cover a big mix of stories from across the sport. We open with the news that Braden Currie is retiring and reflect on the incredible career and legacy he leaves behind. We then turn to the Noosa Triathlon, where Matt Hauser and Cassandre Beaugrand are set to line up at Australia's most iconic race. Lionel Sanders has confirmed his comeback and will return to racing at Indian Wells 70.3 in December, and we discuss what to expect from him as he builds back towards long-course competition. We also look at Alex Yee's outing at the Valencia Half Marathon and react to an impressive T100 Dubai start list that sets up a blockbuster final race of the season. To finish the show, we revisit the biggest story of the week as Imogen Simmonds is ruled "not guilty" in her anti-doping case and talk through what this means for her return to racing.
BIG NEWS WEEK! We cover it all this week, from the races that happened in Europe and Brazil. To the Imogen Simmonds news including our accounts, the timeline of information as we understood it, amongst some other things. After that we go through the 70.3 start list that dropped and some storylines to follow as we near raceday, also the 2026 IRONMAN racing calendar. Ending the show, like always, with the hot takes!

The Government's assuring industry groups they'll still have influence as polytechnics change. Next year, 10 polytechs will return to regional governance - but four remain under Te Pūkenga's umbrella. More decisions will be made mid-next year. Vocational Education Minister Penny Simmonds says these 10 institutions are following a planned pathway designed to boost long-term viability. "This is work that should have happened 5-6 years ago, it's happened now - and they are getting rid of the wasteful spending, they are getting themselves back on track." The Vocational Minister's hopeful students will flood back to polytechs after the model is de-centralised. Staff-to-student ratios are still lower than they were in 2016, despite staff numbers being slashed by 8.2%. Penny Simmonds says low ratios signal financial trouble. She told Mike Hosking student numbers have dropped by 11,000 since Te Pukenga was established in 2020. Simmonds says the Government's working hard to get student numbers up and viable again. Episode 99. Bonus For this Bonus episode, I've invited two British women, Lindsay Simmonds and Julie Siddiqi, both PhDs, to talk about their interfaith friendship and the public facing work they've done since Hamas' attack on Israel on 7 Oct. 2023. Lindsay is an Orthodox Jew and Julie is Muslim. The fact of their religious identities and deep practice is noteworthy and relevant, as the attack and subsequent war, have proven polarizing, straining the already challenging work of bridging religious differences between Jews and Muslims. Lindsay and Julie offer an inspiring example of possibility, showing us the path to connection, communication, and healing, while not shying away from the challenges. Given the long standing and apparent intransigence of the conflict, this seemed a good time for some hope.Highlights: Intersection of deep faith practice and interfaith work.Organizing inclusive events amidst tension.Impact and significance of their work. The role of space, gender, and representation.Trivializing women's impactful initiatives.Sustaining hope and setting intentions for the future. Bios: Dr. Lindsay Simmonds is a Research Fellow at the London School of Jewish Studies (LSJS) where she has lectured for 20+ years. She recently worked as a Researcher at the London School of Economics (LSE), UK, working on Women of Faith and Peacebuilding.Lindsay is very active in local interfaith work. She has five adult children and five grandchildren, and she promotes women's participation in her local orthodox Jewish community in London. Brought to you by Toniebox. This week I have Phoebe Simmonds & Kate Casey, co-founders of The Memo; the retail store with the best brands in the babysphere, on the podcast. We chat about:
My long-time friend, Peter Scott Ruben, is the best guitar player I know, having personally watched him jam with some of the great rock and blues musicians of the seventies (Joe Perry in his pre-Aerosmith days and Kim Simmonds of The Savoy Brown Blues Band are two who immediately come to mind -- I read that Simmonds died two years ago in England and the band had to break up after an amazing fifty-five year run). Since then, Peter has fronted his own bands, and has also carried on his father's legacy as leader of the premier special events orchestra/band in Philadelphia, through which he met "the great one," Frank Sinatra, at a White House gig the orchestra was playing during the Reagan administration back in the 1980's. He also donned a wig a few years ago and played as Eric Clapton in a Cream tribute concert (and I seem to recall he even played a set as Jimmi Hendrix). In addition to his amazing playing, he knows way more about music than anyone in my social orbit so, now that he has embarked on an Act 3 career performing a Frank Sinatra and Bobby Darin one-man tribute show (having bought performing rights to the original Nelson Riddle and other Sinatra/Darin charts), I thought it would be fun to pick his brain here on Pizza Quest regarding why he thinks Sinatra is the greatest performer of all time as well as to see if together we could create a top ten list as well as a Mt. Rushmore top four list of the greatest of the greats. It was so much fun recording this episode -- as you will see and hear -- that I plan on inviting him back to do a similar retrospective on the greatest guitar players and also another on the best bands and performing groups of our time. Peter and I used to stay up all night during our college days talking about stuff like this, so I know he's game for it, as you will hear in this conversation in which we explore not only Sinatra's greatness but also dive deeply into the why and how of what made him the GOAT (and why Bobby Darin was the prince in waiting until he died way too young). So, as we like to say, it's more about the quest than it is about the pizza, and this time around we jump into Peter Ruben's quest for what distinguishes the good from the great when it comes to musical artists. The topic may have changed, but the game remains the same -- and the quest never ends....

This week, we discuss the recent news that Imogen Simmonds tested positive for Ligandrol, a selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM) known to enhance muscle mass and strength. Simmonds has denied intentional use, attributing the positive test to intimate contact with her partner, who was unknowingly taking Ligandrol to improve his physique. We explore the details of this case, its implications for her career, and the broader impact on the sport. We then sit down with Mike Phillips, the new Ironman New Zealand champion and course record holder, to hear how his race unfolded and what this result means for the rest of his season. Finally, we recap all the action from Ironman New Zealand, breaking down the key performances, race dynamics, and standout moments from Taupō.
