At the halfway mark, can we suggest things are starting to turn for the Government? This week we have seen the Prime Minister at Ruakura with a multi-billion dollar investment that sells the Māori economy and showcases large amounts of foreign money, as well as the potential for huge productivity gains and economic growth. On Monday there was more money for tourism. Tourism is coming back, it's too slow, but the tourist spend is up to post-Covid levels. On Tuesday, Education Minister Erica Stanford was pumping more money into classrooms with savings made from the bespoke design nonsense and waste that the Labour Party trainwreck was in charge of. Then the Prime Minister is back with the police and Justice Ministers, spruiking very good-looking numbers around victims of crime. This comes on the back of three polls all of which show the Government being returned to office if an election was held today. Slowly but surely specific bits are starting to fall into place. Things like the fact we had good GDP in the last growth stats. Clearly from Tuesday's numbers, crime, which was as big an issue last election, is looking very much in a box. The gang patch laws are working with even the critics saying they're working. Surveys say people feel safer on the streets and the victim numbers look very good indeed. Health remains an issue and there seems a determination among the unions especially to keep it on the front page. But the key bits that sink or support Governments —the economy, education, crime and justice— look solid. If they can get health under control they will be rolling. Obviously, the economic side is fragile and open to a lot of stuff that is beyond our control, so counting chickens is pointless. On that note, you then come to this idea that's gaining traction that the Trump fiasco could well be the making of our Prime Minister. A bloke who has struggled to connect might well have settled nicely into his wheelhouse with an economic mess that could see the best of him shine when it's needed most. If the polls play okay for them they way they do now, with glimmers of light, by the time we get to the end of the year momentum might well be theirs and an election may well be theirs to lose. 2024 is coming to a close and with it the Coalition Government's first year in power. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon joined Mike Hosking for the last time this year to reflect on his first year as Prime Minister. In response to the reports that say New Zealand faces an investment gap with a growing population, Luxon says that it's a marvellous set of challenges. "The last 30 years, what we've had is a productivity disease," Luxon said. He said countries with similar populations are wealthier than New Zealand. "I've studied this for about 20 years and it comes down to about five things, it's education, science, technology, innovation. What you're seeing at Fonterra, they're really adding a lot of value to their product services, it's definitely infrastructure..." Luxon said as a country we are bad at attracting foreign investment. Hosking asked Luxon if he thinks people "truly understand how troubled this country is." "No," Luxon responded, referencing the past six years of previous government policy. "We run the country like it's 1975," Luxon said. Hosking said the mentality in the country is "the government will wipe my bum." There needed to be a "better quality economic engine" in place for New Zealand to be able to fund its public services better, Luxon said. In regards to his first year as Prime Minister, Luxon said it's been a great 12 months, but you don't really have time to digest it while you're in it. Hosking said his criticism of Luxon was that he hasn't gone hard enough, but the Prime Minister says problems are often more complex than they seem from the outside. So, one poll tells us something by not really moving and another poll tells us something by being badly misrepresented.  The TV1 news numbers last night show that essentially the Government is travelling well, most parties are stable, the Greens are down a bit, but its all, so far, within the margin of error. Nothing really has changed.  What that tells you is broadly a couple of things. The first is at this stage of the electoral cycle people don't pay as much attention as they will be in 18 months' time.  The second is the Government, with its level of support, is doing basically what they said they would, and most people are happy.  The other poll was on race relations. TV1 promoted the fact only 10% think the Government is improving them, but 46% think they are damaging them.  What they didn't give the appropriate prominence to was the fact 37% think it's not making any difference. In other words, despite all the noise and hot air being drummed up by radicals and the media, most of us aren't engaged because nothing really is changing.  If you take the 37% who see no change and the 10% who see an improvement you have 47%, which is in fact more people thinking things are either neutral or better, as opposed to the 46% who think they are worse.  This of course ties into why the Government numbers overall haven't moved and their support remains strong. The so-called drama around Māori policy is not actually politically damaging.  You will note the numbers weren't presented that way by the state-run broadcaster. A good question might be: why not?  What moves needles is the economy and on that we might be in for an improvement. If we are, what you will then see is the polling numbers most definitely shift in the Government's favour.  Māori relations have been tested and testy my entire life. The previous Government bent over backwards for Māori, their beliefs, needs and causes, and look where it got them.  The current Government have read things right.
