Born and raised in Georgia, Marlon Patton is a New York-based drummer and music producer/engineer. Hailing from a long line of drummers dating back to his grandfather, Phil Patton who played in the Chicago big band circuit, Marlon keeps his schedule interesting and packed full of all types of music. He is the first call for so many musicians not just because of his impeccable time, but because of the incredible musicality of what he delivers. He plays within a huge dynamic range, making him the perfect match for quiet piano jazz performances to hard- hitting rock gigs. He can play with everything from precision to reckless abandon and make it truly his own. He currently is a member of Kenosha Kid, Weisshund, Nelson Patton, Lonnie Holley, The Trey Wright Trio and The Mace Hibbard Quintet. He has toured, performed and/or recorded with Liv Warfield, The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Jim White, Larkin Poe, Lonnie Holley, Jeff Coffin, Shahzad Ismaily, Col. Bruce Hampton, John Patitucci, Randy Brecker, Rufus Reid, Marcus Printup, and Wycliffe Gordon. He has recorded for labels such as Sony, Universal, Jagjaguwar, RH Music, Yep Roc, Ropeadope plus many more independent releases. His drumming has been in soundtracks on Adult Swim, ABC, and HBO. In the studio, Marlon has carved a name for himself recording, mixing, and producing. Some recent projects he's worked on are Lonnie Holley's MITH, Liv Warfield's Live at Cafe Wha, Jim White's Where It Hits You, Leah Calvert's Satellite, Daniel Clay's 10,000 Things, Kenosha Kid's Fahrenheit 451, ILL's Gotten Gains, and Blair Dunlop/Larkin Poe's Killing Time. In this episode, Marlon talks about: Being willing to abandon "correct" technique in favor of a sound, feel, or idea How New York has changed his musical priorities and identity What true collaboration really means Improvising vs. "composing in the moment" Moving away from Atlanta with the goal of expanding, personally and musically Tapping into old relationships in a new place Sharing studio space with Jordan Rose and mixing Liv Warfield's latest record

©️ 2023 JOE ALTERMAN Joe Alterman - piano Kevin Smith - bass Justin Chesarek - drums All compositions by Les McCann, except "Don't Forget To Love Yourself," which was composed by Les McCann and Joe Alterman Producer: Joe Alterman Associate Producer: Alan Abrahams Recorded and Mixed by Trammell Starks at Studiomagic Mastered by Dave Nelson and Marlon Patton at Bone Hollow Recording Released August 11, 2023 СЛУШАТЬ АЛЬБОМ - https://album.link/i/1687753079 THE UPSIDE OF DOWN - https://t.me/discor/6331 Лучший трек альбома в плейлисте JAZZ по-русски 6 на AppleMusic и Spotify Поставь лайк ❤️ и подпишись на канал JAZZ по-русски https://t.me/discor #jazz #swing #RnB --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/konstantins/message
Atlanta native Joe Alterman expresses a certain upbeat naivete, with a broad smile and bright eyes that make you feel welcome. One would not guess that this is a man hailed by greats; Ramsey Lewis describes his piano playing as ‘a joy to behold', Les McCann states ‘As a man and musician he is already a giant'. Journalist Nat Hentoff championed three of Alterman's albums, as well as his writing (Joe wrote liner notes to three Wynton Marsalis/JALC albums, calling one of Joe's columns “one of the very best pieces on the essence of jazz, the spirit of jazz, that I've ever read, and I'm not exaggerating.” Joe Alterman began at NYU with a BA and Masters in Jazz Piano, followed by performances with Houston Person, Les McCann, Dick Gregory, and Ramsey Lewis. But there is more to the story, of course. The twenty-first century has thus far seen yet another transition for this thing called Jazz. In one moment we see the push and pull between tradition and progression, and in another we see Pop and Hip-Hop musicians emulating and sampling. In Joe Alterman we find none of this struggle; the music just sounds good. This fresh and joyful intent is captured on Joe Alterman's new release The Upside Of Down. Taken from two live shows at Birdland in November 2019 and February 2020. Joined by Nathaniel Schroeder on bass and Marlon Patton on drums, Alterman cruises gently and delightedly through timeless selections from Less McCann, Oscar Peterson, Henry Mancini and more.
“Yeah he’s a great drummer, but he’s a jazz player.” I’d be willing to bet that sometime during a conversation you’ve heard a similar comment. What does that even mean? And more importantly what’s the rationale for saying that? It’s obviously a reference to the musical approach of the jazz player and how he’d be inappropriate for a particular job. It’s certainly no secret that many musicians devote the majority of their time to one particular musical style. That devotion however can lead to neglect and the superimposition of the preferred style while playing another genre. That’s not good. However, instead of a sweeping generalization what particular aspects of his approach make him suitable for jazz but not for rock? In this episode we welcome Marlon Patton to the show as we dissect and examine the differences between the jazz and rock mindset. What makes up the mentality of a great jazz or rock musician? We take the topics of touch, gear, independence, feel, groove construction, song structure, and gig preparation to dig deep into what makes the approach different between the two styles. We also spend a few minutes talking about the start of the new season while reviewing a few listener emails.
