Born and raised in Georgia, Marlon Patton is a New York-based drummer and music producer/engineer. Hailing from a long line of drummers dating back to his grandfather, Phil Patton who played in the Chicago big band circuit, Marlon keeps his schedule interesting and packed full of all types of music. He is the first call for so many musicians not just because of his impeccable time, but because of the incredible musicality of what he delivers. He plays within a huge dynamic range, making him the perfect match for quiet piano jazz performances to hard- hitting rock gigs. He can play with everything from precision to reckless abandon and make it truly his own. He currently is a member of Kenosha Kid, Weisshund, Nelson Patton, Lonnie Holley, The Trey Wright Trio and The Mace Hibbard Quintet. He has toured, performed and/or recorded with Liv Warfield, The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Jim White, Larkin Poe, Lonnie Holley, Jeff Coffin, Shahzad Ismaily, Col. Bruce Hampton, John Patitucci, Randy Brecker, Rufus Reid, Marcus Printup, and Wycliffe Gordon. He has recorded for labels such as Sony, Universal, Jagjaguwar, RH Music, Yep Roc, Ropeadope plus many more independent releases. His drumming has been in soundtracks on Adult Swim, ABC, and HBO.  In the studio, Marlon has carved a name for himself recording, mixing, and producing. Some recent projects he's worked on are Lonnie Holley's MITH, Liv Warfield's Live at Cafe Wha, Jim White's Where It Hits You, Leah Calvert's Satellite, Daniel Clay's 10,000 Things, Kenosha Kid's Fahrenheit 451, ILL's Gotten Gains, and Blair Dunlop/Larkin Poe's Killing Time.  In this episode, Marlon talks about: Being willing to abandon "correct" technique in favor of a sound, feel, or idea How New York has changed his musical priorities and identity What true collaboration really means Improvising vs. "composing in the moment" Moving away from Atlanta with the goal of expanding, personally and musically Tapping into old relationships in a new place Sharing studio space with Jordan Rose and mixing Liv Warfield's latest record

Today, the Spotlight was meant to shine On drummer, percussionist, and composer Ches Smith, whose album Laugh Ash was released earlier this year on Pyroclastic Records. As we arranged to get together, Ches suggested we include Shara Lunon, the transdisciplinary poet, vocalist, composer, and improviser featured on the album.Laugh Ash is one of the most intriguing records I have encountered in quite some time, with its mix of form and improvisation, acoustic and synthetic, quiet and explosiveness. In addition to Ches and Shara, the album includes an all-star cast from today's creative music scene: flutist Anna Webber, clarinetist Oscar Noriega, tenor saxophonist James Brandon Lewis, trumpeter Nate Wooley, violinist Jennifer Choi, violist Kyle Armbrust, cellist Michael Nicolas, and bassist/keyboardist Shahzad Ismaily. It is an exciting work and we had a great conversation. One of the songs I keep coming back to is “Mohabbat” by Arooj Aftab. It's really special to me. I listen to it all the time. I've been listening to it so often that I wanted to revisit Arooj's episode about it. In the time since the episode has come out, she has released a collaborative album with Vijay Iyer and Shahzad Ismaily called Love In Exile, which got two Grammy nominations. And she has a new album that's about to come out on May 31st, called Night Reign. Here's her episode: Arooj Aftab is a singer and composer based in Brooklyn. She grew up in Saudi Arabia, but her family is from Pakistan. And earlier this year, she made history by becoming the first Pakistani artist to win a Grammy. Her song, “Mohabbat" won the Best Global Music Performance Grammy, and she was nominated for Best New Artist. "Mohabbat" was first released on her 2021 album, Vulture Prince, but it's been a part of Arooj's life for a long time . In this episode, she tells the story of how the song was first born, and how it lived with her and evolved over the years before she finally recorded it.For more, visit songexploder.net/arooj-aftab.

He has amassed a celebrity following including Brad Pitt, Chris Martin, Beyoncé, and Jay Z who are drawn to his eternal message of peace and transformation.Other singers of Rumi's poetry mentioned in the conversation: Homayun Shajarian | Mohammad-Reza Shajarian | Shahram Nazeri | ParisaHaleh Liza Gafori is a translator, vocalist, poet, and composer born in New York City of Persian descent. Her book of translations, "Gold: Poems by Rumi", was published by New York Review Books in 2022. Supported by a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, Gafori has created a musical, cross-media performance piece based on the book, weaving translations, original text, and compositions sung in Persian and English which she debuted at the New York Public Library. Shahzad Ismaily is a Brooklyn-based musician, composer, and engineer who founded Figure 8 Recording. Often referred to as the “musician's favorite musician”, he has collaborated with many avant-garde artists and composers including Laurie Anderson, Anthony Coleman, and Marc Ribot. The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

Pianist-composer Vijay Iyer has been described by The New York Times as a “social conscience, multimedia collaborator, system builder, rhapsodist, historical thinker and multicultural gateway.” He has been praised by Pitchfork as “one of the best in the world at what he does,” by the Los Angeles Weekly as “a boundless and deeply important young star,” and by Minnesota Public Radio as “an American treasure.” He received a MacArthur Fellowship, a Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, a United States Artist Fellowship, a Grammy nomination, the Alpert Award in the Arts, and two German “Echo” awards, and was voted Downbeat Magazine's Jazz Artist of the Year four times in the last decade.  But beyond all that praise, he is at his core simply a seeker of genuine connection and community. Here he talks about growing up in Rochester, NY as one of a small handful of first generation Indian Americans (his parents immigrated), how he developed his musical identity alongside an academic career as a scientist (he did his undergraduate work in math and physics at Yale and holds a PHD from UC Berkeley in the cognitive science of music), creating work for an uncertain future, how to make music matter, and his most recent recordings.  He released Love In Exile - a collaborative album with Arooj Aftab and Shahzad Ismaily - last month on Verve Records.  www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.wbgo.org/studios

British singer and songwriter Beth Orton has found distinctive ways to blend her folky acoustic guitar-playing with the sounds of the electronic music world. But her latest record, Weather Alive, settles in a distinctly personal space where genres don't so much collide as fade away, and the basis for the album wasn't guitar, but tracks she recorded on a beat-up, questionably-tuned upright piano she bought at a street market. Orton also says that she got to collaborate with herself - as she produced the record - and with that old piano, which "really spoke to me," (Pitchfork.) Additionally, in keeping with her wide ranging musical circle (she's worked with Chemical Brothers, William Orbit, Nick Cave, Emmylou Harris, Four Tet, to drop a few names), she collaborated remotely on Weather Alive with multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily, the Smile drummer Tom Skinner (Sons of Kemet), and guitarist Grey McMurray, and other folks during lockdown.  Beth Orton and her band play some of these tunes in-studio.  Set list: "Friday Night", "Fractals", "Arms Around a Memory" Weather Alive by Beth Orton

Acclaimed LA / New York bassist, producer and songwriter Joshua Crumbly joins Shahzad Ismaily's figureight records for the release of beautiful new album ForEver   “ForEver is a letter to tomorrow,” Joshua tells us. His music embodies this sentiment with eloquent gravitas. It is certainly as personal as a letter, handcrafted in the most expressive and affecting ways. Like a letter, it speaks not only of its own words, but of the writer, a soul baring important truths. And it is addressed to “tomorrow”; a sense of hope and conviction illuminate its gentle musical miniatures. “ForEver is a reflection on love, legacy and happenings in the world. A warm hug in inner space.”   Though centred about the bass guitar - Joshua is a sought after bassist whose credits include albums for Blue Note, recording dates with Bob Dylan, and performances with Kamasi Washington - ForEver uses additional instrumentation with subtlety and grace. Key track “THREE” grooves on a balmy percussive rhythm while a jazz-tinged synth melody loops and coils about the repeated bassline. The rolling, free drums of “Higher” offer a chaotic counterpoint to the lilting serenity of its arpeggiated bass chords.    Interestingly, the record's first vocal lines appear midway through the album (in “To Morrow”), a timely reminder that all of the elegance, power and fluency thus far has been achieved without a single lyric. Towards the end of the record, “Kolkata” is named after the birthplace of Joshua's mother. Combinations of cultures - Joshua has an African-American father and a South Asian mother - is found in abundance in his music. “I think the sound of the album is flexible and doesn't inherently lead to any one singular experience,” he writes. “ForEver can be the leaves of a tree in the wind far off in the distance, or the vast sea that you've dipped your feet into whilst taking in the infinite, finding your own reflection.”   Joshua made his musical debut aged 10, playing alongside his saxophonist father. A gifted performer, even as a pre-teen, he enjoyed mentorships with renowned bass players Reggie Hamilton (Whitney Houston, Seal) and Al McKibbon (Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins) before moving from LA to New York to attend the prestigious Juilliard music school. After years of honing his musicality alongside seminal players, Joshua finally embarked on recording his own solo pieces, beginning with 2020's Rise album. The starting place of ForEver quickly followed, beginning with encouraging words from friend and collaborator Shahzad Ismaily. “ForEver began with an out of the blue call from Shahzad. He told me that I needed to record a solo bass album. It started out as such, then I added some other instruments. It branched out even further when I reached out to a few friends, whose voice I was strongly hearing on particular songs. I'm grateful they were down to be a part of the record.”

We Quaran-Team Up with our boys, The Spook House Podcast for this week's episode. Please find them at https://www.instagram.com/thespookhousepodcast and https://thespookhousepodcast.bigcartel.com/ The film is Hereditary, you know that delightful little family movie. Oh, whoops, wrong "D" word, I meant devastating! After Ari Aster's ambitious student films, The Strange Thing About the Johnsons and, Munchausen, he made his feature film debut with this film. Originally conceived as a typical family drama, he added demons and kings from hell for kicks. The film stars Toni Collette (Krampus, Knives Out). I cannot stress this enough... SHE IS THE ENTIRE MOVIE! If it was not for her gripping acting and reaction to the events of the film, truly I think the rest of it would be meaningless. Her husband is played by Gabriel Byrne (The Usual Suspects) who is clearly struggling with his wife's descent into madness. Their son is played by Alex Wolff, who went full method in his performance. He refused to be addressed as anything but Peter for the two months of filming and did not introduce himself to his cast mates until production was over. Lastly, I would just lose my head if I did not mention Milly Shapiro, who plays the tragic Charlie, who has never really had an identity of her own, as she was a vessel for the demon king, Paimon. Makeup was designed by Steve Newburn, who indicated that the *ahem* scene, was originally much gnarlier. We'll explain why and how on the show. The music was by Colin Stetson. He's collaborated with a few bands you may have heard of, basically ALL OF THEM: Tom Waits, Arcade Fire, TV on the Radio, Feist, Bon Iver, Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, Sinéad O'Connor, The National, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, BADBADNOTGOOD, Fink, Animal Collective, LCD Soundsystem, Hamid Drake, David Byrne, Bill Laswell, Evan Parker, Jolie Holland, The Chemical Brothers, Shahzad Ismaily, My Brightest Diamond, Angélique Kidjo, Kevin Devine, David Gilmour, Anthony Braxton, and Beanie Burnett. There's really no other way to say it: Music journalism is kind of in the sh@#@er in 2017. We're panling up in the basement to consider how things got this bad, could we all have done anything to stop it, and, most importantly, where do we go from here? Elder is a metal/prog band from Boston. We like Elder. Elder has a savage new album out, Reflections Of A Floating World. We like savage things. Seems like a thing we'd need to talk about, yea? PLUS! Colin Stetson is back and he's bringing his friends! This time the "heavy metal" wizard is diving headfirst in to metal/prog with his new band Ex Eye (featuring Stetson, Liturgy's Greg Fox on drums, Toby Summerfield on guitars, and Shahzad Ismaily on synths) and and the results are as wild as you would expect. "Xenolith; The Anvil" is your first taste of this righteous sonic assault that's coming for all of us later this month. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

EX EYE is the strong combination of Colin Stetson on saxophones, Shahzad Ismaily on bass and synth, Greg Fox on drums and electronics, and last but most certainly not least Toby Summerfield on guitar. The result is hard, heavy, and thrilling. We met the four members right after their show at Roskilde Festival and talked about their fluffy roles in the band and the extreme level of dynamics between them.

It almost goes without saying that anything that Marc Ribot touches turns to gold, and Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog is no exception. Aside from his own prolific solo career, Ribot has worked with captains of industry like Elvis Costello, John Zorn, The Black Keys, plus goes back thirty years and seven records deep with Tom Waits. He's been lauded as one of the best living guitar players and is now trying his hand at a new project pregnant with absurdist jazz, free form punk, and garage-y overtones. As Ceramic Dog, Marc Ribot is joined in-studio at KEXP with bassist Shahzad Ismaily and drummer Ches Smith. Check out their unbelievably raw session hosted by Jazz Theater's John Gilbreath. In this podcast guitarist and OutsideGuitar.com founder Aram Bajakian (and guitarist for Lou Reed, Diana Krall, John Zorn) talks to Marc Ribot.  During the course of his career, Ribot has worked as a sideman with an impressive lineup of artists, most notably as the sound smith behind many of Tom Waits' classic recordings. In addition to the dozens of albums he's played on on John Zorn's Tzadik label, he's also worked with Elvis Costello, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, Marianne Faithful, Mike Patton, The Lounge Lizards and Diana Krall. His own groups are equally as diverse, from a project that plays the compositions of Cuban composer Arsenio Rodriquez (Marc Ribot y los Cubanos Postizos) to his noise-rock group Ceramic Dog with drummer Ches Smith and bassist Shahzad Ismaily. Ribot's solo records, Saints and Silent Movies, are easily some of the most beautiful out there. In this episode Aram asks Marc questions from outsideguitar.com subscribers, which lead to discussions of how to break away from blues cliches when improvising, to Ornette Coleman, to how to keep your cool when performing in front of large (or small) audiences, as well as many other subjects.  Half the episode is here. The iconic multimedia artist Laurie Anderson always has two or three projects going at any one time, and aside from her acclaimed new feature film Heart of a Dog, she’s unveiling an installation and performance called Habeas Corpus, which takes place at the cavernous Park Avenue Armory in New York, October 2nd through 4th, 2015. Among Anderson’s collaborators on the show are the great Syrian singer Omar Souleyman, ace multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily and Anderson’s partner in this Talkhouse Music Podcast, Merrill Garbus from Tune-Yards. Garbus and Anderson actually met through a Talkhouse Music Podcast, and you can hear them hit it off in the course of that conversation. If fact, they hit it off so well that Anderson invited Garbus to develop a musical piece with her for Habeas Corpus. So, on the occasion of their collaboration, we brought these two remarkable artists back together for another chat. They spoke mostly about the show, but when you get two such brilliant, interesting people, the conversation is going to go to some fascinating places, and it sure did — everything from Anderson’s experiences with a psychiatrist to the reason why Garbus wanted to become an artist.

I'm joined in the interview by Mike Keegan. Carla's music projects have included Ethyl Meatplow, Geraldine Fibbers, Scarnella, and most recently Evangelista who have put out three epic albums on Constellation Records. They take a break from their busy schedules to chat with me at the Huffin House in Oakland. They've got two gigs in the Bay, their last US shows for the foreseeable future, July 19th at the Nightlight and August 17th at the Hemlock. A bit hectic and goofy, given how dark and mysterious the music gets, with a special surprise drop-in phone guest. ------------ HIGH CASTLE - After God - Spirit of the West (Zum) (intro music)  GERALDINE FIBBERS - You Doo Right - Butch  BORFUL TANG - Sanctuary  BUSINESS LADY - Rock Candy Mountain - Torture Footage (Load)
