It's a challenge to describe bassist John Patitucci. He's a 2025 Jazz Journalists Association Award winner for Electric Bassist of the Year, and four-time Grammy Award winning artist, one of today's elite bassists, not just jazz but in all of music, but that's too limiting. John is a bassist with not only excellent rhythm but a complex, angular rhythmic style with dynamic and warm tones and a style that moves people emotionally as well as physically. No, that's too inadequate. John describes himself as, “a man of faith.” But when I step back, I realize all the above pretty much sums it up. A Brooklyn, New York native, John Patitucci's musical history is, in his words, a “Cinderella story.” At 25 years old, he was suddenly whisked away by iconic jazz pianist Chick Corea to join his new band, the Chick Corea Elektric Band and later the Akoustic Band where he played a large role in developing the sound of jazz fusion of the 1980s and 90s. It was Chick Corea who facilitated Patitucci's connection with GRP Records to make his first recordings and then tour the world, quickly becoming a global jazz figure. The story continues in 1986 when he was invited by saxophonist legend Maestro Wayne Shorter to contribute to his Columbia Records project Phantom Navigator. This led to Patitucci joining Wayne Shorter's 20-year four-time Grammy Award winning quartet, along with his good friends, pianist Danilo Perez and drummer Brian Blade. For John, this was the ultimate life. While Chick's band set John on a forward trajectory, it was in Wayne Shorter's band that he grew spiritually as well as technically. “The things that happened on stage are spiritual experiences for me. It's been transformative.” It's this spiritual development that is the pinnacle component of our conversation. John's “faith” plays a large role in his music, his stage presence, and his relationships with key band members including saxophone giant Chris Potter and legendary drummer Brian Blade. His fondness for pianist Danilo Perez continues from their brotherhood in the Wayne Shorter Quartet. This conversation occurs just as John, Danilo Perez, and Brian Blade returned with iconic saxophonist Ravi Coltrane on the three-week Wayne Shorter Legacy Tour in Europe. We open the episode recounting the tour and the importance faith played in it. We spent time delving into his recent recording, Spirit Fall, laughing and enjoying ourselves describing the compositions that impressed us the most. The creation and emotional depth of Spirit Fall, recorded without rehearsals, is a focal point of the conversation, illustrating the trio's deep connection and improvisational synergy that's felt throughout the album. Thanks to Edition Records, there are three tracks to listen to on this episode. The John Patitucci Trio: John Patitucci-double bass/electric bass, Chris Potter-tenor saxophone/bass clarinet, and Brian Blade-drums/percussion. The playlist: Think Fast (6:51), Spirit Fall (6:18), and Lipi'm (7:40), all John Patitucci compositions and produced by John Patitucci. Thank you for listening to this podcast. I know you have many others to listen to, but you chose Strictly Jazz Sounds. When you subscribe you become one of the first to hear new episodes, read articles, see new photos, and learn of my annual “Best of” list. Soon, I will introduce a Patreon opportunity, your way of saying thanks to me for spending the more than 25 hours per episode to bring it to you. John Patitucci and I dove right into the conversation talking about one of his most cherished people, Brian Blade, and the impact their collaborations had on John's sound, particularly highlighting Brian Blade's dynamic drumming.

Mark-Anthony Turnage is a composer of contemporary classical music. Once called “Britain's hippest composer”, he has been in a rock band, got drunk with Francis Bacon, and tackled anything from drug abuse to football in his works. Mark was born in June 1960 in the Thames estuary town of Corringham in Essex. His musical talent was nurtured by his parents and he studied composition at the junior department at the Royal College of Music from aged fourteen. There he met the composer Oliver Knussen who became his tutor, mentor, and life-long friend. His first performed work, Night Dances, written while still at the Royal College, won a prize and heralded Mark's evolution into what one critic calls “one of the best known British composers of his generation, widely admired for his highly personal mixture of energy and elegy, tough and tender”. Greek, his debut opera, a reimagining of the Oedipus myth whose protagonist is a racist, violent and foul-mouthed football hooligan, shocked the establishment, which flinched, but accepted “Turnage, the trouble-maker” as a forceful voice. Over the past four decades he has sustained a distinguished and productive career that has seen him working closely with conductors of the stature of Bernard Haitink, Esa-Pekka Salonen and, particularly, Simon Rattle. He has been attached to prestigious institutions, such as English National Opera and both the BBC and Chicago symphony orchestras, and has written a vast range of music for many different instruments and ensembles. His influences include soul, gospel, all sorts of jazz and the great symphonic works of the repertoire. He has written operas, ballets, concertos, chamber pieces and choral works together with orchestrating a football match. His key works include Three Screaming Popes and Blood on the Floor (both inspired by Francis Bacon paintings, and the latter containing an elegy for his younger brother, Andrew, who died of a drug overdose in 1995), as well as more operas including one about the former Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith. Mark lives in North London with his partner, the opera director, Rachael Hewer. DISC ONE: Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op. 125 II. Molto vivace - Presto - Molto vivace – Presto. He went on to graduate from the Manhattan School of Music and The Juilliard School where he studied with piano great Kenny Barron, Phil Markowitz, and Gary Dial. In his sophomore album, Spiritual Nature (Resonance Records, 2012), he was joined by the regal rhythm tandem of bassist Christian McBride and drummer Lewis Nash. Vega teamed up again with Lewis Nash on his third album, Concerning Monty, (Resonance Records, 2015) along with Hassan Shakur, the great bassist and former Monty Alexander band member, and long-time friend and Grammy-nominated artist, Anthony Wilson on guitar. Donald recently finished recording his latest album, As I Travel (2023), with Lewis Nash on drums and John Patitucci on bass, featuring Luisito Quintero on percussion.

On his new recording, Something About Believing tenor saxophonist Tim Armacost is joined by trumpeter Tom Harrell and baritone saxophonist Gary Smulyan as well as the outstanding rhythm section of bassist John Patitucci and drummer Al Foster. Listening to the music one is struck by the comfortability of master improvisers doing what they do best, however in this episode of LINER NOTES Tim explains that this recording is a snapshot of a journey that he embarked on a number of years ago while exploring synesthesia. The project began as a chordless quartet in which the musicians worked with lighting designer Liz Liebeskind in real time and beyond this recording Armacost has assembled a new quartet that is working with visual artist Mary Shah who joins the band at performances and creates a visual response to the band's music.

With music a proven border-crossing phenomenon, musicians are the world's ambassadors, setting the stage for sonic and social mutual respect, collaborations, and partnerships. One such story is that of the song "Way Maker" and the artist who created it, Nigerian vocalist and songwriter Sinach. The song, originally made popular in the United States by Leeland, has crisscrossed the globe repeatedly, becoming a Christian worship music standard for many cultures. Our guests discuss how a song reaches such ubiquity and what it takes to steward a song that loves to wander into hearts and voices anywhere and everywhere. The conversation (recorded at Nashville's Sound Emporium Studios) begins with a song by Nigerian musician King Sunny Ade, one of Charlie's West African musical influences. In turn, Sinach reveals some of her American music influences. Throughout the episode, Charlie weaves the story of border-crossing and neighbor-love as a way of being, revealing the musical and spiritual interplay between people, the places they call home, and Jesus—the Way Maker of the Christian faith. Integrity Music executives, Vice President Mark Nicholas and Director of A&R Gilbert Nanlohy figure in prominently, including a discussion of Gilbert's Indonesian musical heritage, and Mark's perspective on the community-partnership focus of Integrity Music's global mission. The episode wraps with Charlie checking off an item on his bucket list—sitting down to his Fender Rhodes electric piano for an impromptu jam on one of Sinach's new songs, "Victory Is My Name." Nashville meets Nigeria, indeed! In closing, a reminder that our show theme, "Sound of the Room," performed by Charlie and bassist John Patitucci, is now available in its full-length version, everywhere music is streamed.
