On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with Matt Mundy to discuss his incredible musical journey, which is deeply rooted in family heritage and a love for bluegrass. We dive into the evolution of bluegrass music, breaking down the role of various instruments and how academic influences have helped shape modern sounds.Matt opens up about his early years in music, playing with family, and the joy of making music together. He also shares some memorable stories, including his experiences playing with Wendy Bagwell and his later transition to working with Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit. We talk about the significance of rhythm in bluegrass, the importance of being a team player, and how the lessons he learned from his bandmates helped shape his playing style. We even discuss some of Matt's collaborations with well-known musicians like Bela Fleck, the rise of jam bands, and how he handles performance anxiety—a common challenge for so many in the music world. Matt also talks about teaching as a way to understand music on a deeper level and reflects on the joy of passing on his love for music to younger players. Born and raised in Georgia, Marlon Patton is a New York-based drummer and music producer/engineer. Hailing from a long line of drummers dating back to his grandfather, Phil Patton who played in the Chicago big band circuit, Marlon keeps his schedule interesting and packed full of all types of music. He is the first call for so many musicians not just because of his impeccable time, but because of the incredible musicality of what he delivers. He plays within a huge dynamic range, making him the perfect match for quiet piano jazz performances to hard- hitting rock gigs. He can play with everything from precision to reckless abandon and make it truly his own. He currently is a member of Kenosha Kid, Weisshund, Nelson Patton, Lonnie Holley, The Trey Wright Trio and The Mace Hibbard Quintet. He has toured, performed and/or recorded with Liv Warfield, The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Jim White, Larkin Poe, Lonnie Holley, Jeff Coffin, Shahzad Ismaily, Col. Bruce Hampton, John Patitucci, Randy Brecker, Rufus Reid, Marcus Printup, and Wycliffe Gordon. He has recorded for labels such as Sony, Universal, Jagjaguwar, RH Music, Yep Roc, Ropeadope plus many more independent releases. His drumming has been in soundtracks on Adult Swim, ABC, and HBO.  In the studio, Marlon has carved a name for himself recording, mixing, and producing. Some recent projects he's worked on are Lonnie Holley's MITH, Liv Warfield's Live at Cafe Wha, Jim White's Where It Hits You, Leah Calvert's Satellite, Daniel Clay's 10,000 Things, Kenosha Kid's Fahrenheit 451, ILL's Gotten Gains, and Blair Dunlop/Larkin Poe's Killing Time.  In this episode, Marlon talks about: Being willing to abandon "correct" technique in favor of a sound, feel, or idea How New York has changed his musical priorities and identity What true collaboration really means Improvising vs. "composing in the moment" Moving away from Atlanta with the goal of expanding, personally and musically Tapping into old relationships in a new place Sharing studio space with Jordan Rose and mixing Liv Warfield's latest record

Chris is powerful, creative, and consistent, yet very reactive and conversational with his playing. I was so happy to chat with him. I'll be honest—I haven't really said this in an intro before, but this conversation is what I envisioned when I started this podcast. Chris is incredible at sharing his story through his choices and offers invaluable advice along the way. This is hands down one of my favorite episodes. Please enjoy my chat with Chris Fryar about the five records that shaped him into the musician he is today. And make sure you check out his honorable mentions. Interview with Mark Bingham Guitarist-singer-songwriter-arranger and esteemed producer Mark Bingham (a 2021 recipient of Offbeat magazine's Lifetime Achievement in Music Business Award), has dedicated over 50 years to pursuing creativity regardless of category. From working with seminal punk and No Wave bands MX-80 Sound and Bush Tetras to Cajun groups Michot's Melody Makers and Lost Bayou Ramblers to Beat poets Ed Sanders and Allen Ginsberg to jazz artists John Scofield, Wycliffe Gordon and Nicholas Payton to celebrated pop stars like Marianne Faithfull, Dr. John, R.E.M., Roy Orbison and Jon Batiste, Bingham has always sought out projects that get his creative juices flowing. “There's been no linear path,” he said of his storied career. “It's been up and down and all around, and you just try to find good people to work with.” A true child of the ‘60s, Bingham is from an era when ‘Question Authority' was de rigueur. He ended up taking it to heart, both politically and musically. While attending Indiana University in the early ‘70s, at the peak of the anti-war movement on the campuses all across America, the Bloomington, Indiana native formed the Screaming Gypsy Bandits, a sprawling 10-piece theatrical psych rock group with an absurdist/prankster bent that shared the renegade stance of such bands of the day as Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band and the Hampton Grease Band (led by visionary frontman Col. Bruce Hampton).   Mark's Info  https://markbingham.bandcamp.com/music

Challenge accepted!  For our last "regular" episode of Season 3 (before our holiday party and best of 2022 shows), we discuss the artists who continue to challenge us, defy expectations, and create uncompromising art.  Some of these artists have such deep catalogues that it can be daunting to take it all in, some may be too esoteric or eccentric to immediately grab you.  But the 25(!) artists that we pick during this episode have one thing in common...stick with them, and their music will reward you handsomely. In other words...you'll come around, Gregg!  On the other hand, there are certain artists who we find immediately appealing...even if it took 40 years, like the Atlanta band Current Rage.  To celebrate the 40th anniversary reissue of their 1982 mini-album Seven Songs on Propeller Sound Recordings (now generously expanded to 15 tracks) is guitarist John Moore, drummer Paul Lenz, and singer/guitarist Oliver Bewley (son of late Current Rage singer Chris Bewley).  It's a powerful rock n' roll story about family, loss, redemption and second chances that you won't want to miss.  It's the Penicillin Sound! Get the Seven Songs reissue at: https://propellersoundrecordings.com/ About Current Rage: Current Rage are a four-piece, post-punk, musical group that played live in the Southeastern United States during the early eighties. They were comprised of Chris Bewley, John Moore, Pat Kirkland, and Paul Lenz. In the landscape of a fertile, burgeoning Athens/Atlanta music scene Current Rage gained notoriety and a loyal following performing with such musical icons as REM, Pylon, Swimming Pool Q's, The Fleshtones, The Bush Tetras, and The Bongos. Eventually Current Rage would headline shows on their own at such iconic venues as Athens, GA's 40Watt Club, Atlanta's 688 Club, Chapel Hills's The Cat's Cradle, Birmingham's The Nik, and Nashville's Frankensteins. Current Rage first formed in 1979 when skaters, Chris Bewley and John Moore, began writing songs together after school on a pair of second-hand guitars. The two first met as early teen-agers having been recruited separately by Mike Maloof, founder, and manager of Atlanta-based Progressive Skate shop. Bewley and Moore traveled the Southeast competing and marketing Maloof's “Equalizer” skateboard decks and “Accelerator” wheels. Eventually, Moore was recruited by the Z-East team, in Jacksonville, Florida to ride professionally for their Z-Flex brand of decks and wheels. While Bewley was recruited by Sabre Skateboards out of northern Alabama to represent their laminated skate decks at competitions and demos. In the summer of 1979 Moore entered his freshman year at Georgia Tech University and Bewley was invited by his older brother Randy to join his group Pylon as they made their way to New York for their first show opening for Gang of Four. During this trip Bewley became immersed in the New York post-punk music scene and was inspired to start a band of his own. Once back in Atlanta Bewley and Moore began writing songs and practicing. The early version of Current Rage was Bewley and Moore on guitar, Pat Kirkland on drums and Norman Hanson on lead vocals. In mid-1980 Current Rage performed their first show in Athens at the 40th Watt Club opening for The Method Actors. Next, they performed at Atlanta's newly opened 688 Club with The Swimming Pool Q's. Current Rage became the “go to” opening act that year at the 688 Club performing several times each month opening for numerous national and regional acts. By the beginning of 1981 Current Rage was headlining shows in both Athens and Atlanta and began venturing out to Charlotte, Nashville, Chattanooga, and Birmingham. Once the band had found their true drummer in Paul Lenz, who they enticed away from the Atlanta underground band, Vietnam, the original drummer Pat Kirkland shifted his focus to lead vocals and supplemental percussion while Hanson left to start his new band Feast of Friends. Current Rage released an indie label E.P. album called Seven Songs on EOD Records in late 1982. Current Rage was known for short catchy post punk tunes dripping with danceable irony as well as darkwave surf instrumentals. “Seven Songs” was produced by legendary Athens-Atlanta engineer, Bruce Baxter. Baxter had engineered the B-52's single, “Rock Lobster”, Pylon's debut album “Gyrate” followed by the debut albums of The Swimming Pool Q's and Love Tractor. Current Rage's album was the first release on Ron Bond's EOD (Entertainment on Disc) Records. “Seven Songs” was recorded in April 1982 at Channel One studios with Bruce Baxter handling engineering and sound mixing and was released in late October. It is highly regarded by record collectors seeking out early eighties DIY releases. The first pressing of “Seven Songs” yielded 400 copies that were sold primarily at Southeastern independent record stores. Garnering significant east-coast distribution from Important Records, the band rushed to press another 500 records within three months of the initial release. Current Rage gained significant regional buzz from college radio stations WRAS, WREK and WUOG among others across the southeast who played songs like ‘Waikiki' and ‘Sweet Torture'. They also released several music videos that were played regularly in Athens-Atlanta area nightclubs and screened on the weekly music video show on Channel 36 WATL in the early-years of the MTV era. Anthony DeCurtis of Rolling Stone magazine wrote, “an enviable and impressive explosion of new music was emerging from the Atlanta-Athens area at this time” in his Rolling Stone magazine feature article charting the explosion of innovative bands coming out of Atlanta-Athens in 1983. He noted Current Rage as “An up-and-coming standout.” Current Rage has shared the stage with such local legends as Pylon, REM, the Method Actors, The Roys, The Brains, The Swimming Pool Q's, Love Tractor, Vietnam, Kilkenny Kats, and the Side Effects. By 1983, they will have also performed with Col. Bruce Hampton's Late Bronze Age, and Tinsley Ellis' Heartfixers, as well as Guadalcanal Diary and Jason and the Nashville Scorchers. Current Rage's lyrics sketched out wry, lyrical observations about pop-culture fads in “Right Side of the Brain” and “Gidget goes Digital” and expressed vivid, realistic, expressions of common psychological experiences in “Sweet Torture” and “Bitte Schӧn [Beat to Shame]”. In some of their most memorable songs they championed mock-anthemic choruses that affirmed ordinary, everyday, phenomena such as living with an aging dog in “My Dog Sam” or scoring some cool shirts at thrift stores in “Bag of Shirts”. Current Rage's distinctive sound is brash, energetic, and rhythmic, showcasing two drone-based guitarists with crunchy, first-position chords strummed beneath chiming post-punk leads on top of fast frenetic drumming. The relative scarcity of “Seven Songs” today suggests the item does not circulate on the marketplace often. The combination of a small batch release plus, eye-catching three-color cover art, and short catchy songs connects you to the ‘golden age' of the Athens-Atlanta music scene. After Current Rage ceased performing each of the members followed different paths. Paul played drums in several successful bands, The Nightporters, Drivin-n-Cryin, and Michelle Malone's Drag the River. In 1983 he founded a successful musical charity, Rat Aid, which raised much needed funds for targeted relief of local area members of the Atlanta music scene. Today, Paul has a successful audio visual production business in metro Atlanta. Pat had a successful modeling and acting career in Los Angeles, later moving to Phoenix. John returned to school eventually becoming a humanities professor at a college in South Carolina where he still teaches today. Chris took up a career in graphic design gaining a position with the United States Printing Office in Washington D.C., a skill he developed designing concert flyers for local bands and clubs in Atlanta and Athens. In 2018 while living in Charlotte Chris succumbed to a heart attack at the age of 57.

Grant talks about admiring Bert Bacharach since his childhood days, and Grant offers thoughts about specific tracks on this brand new tribute to the legendary songwriter/pianist/producer/performer. Grant also reveals why (and on which song) he was first motivated to sing, that he doesn't use Spotify and one specific example of how Johnny Cash inspired him. He also admits that his father first didn't want him to play guitar, then was very critical of his guitar playing at first, but ultimately things changed. Grant also reflects on living next door to Stevie Wonder, his years in Atlanta, and brings forth insight about Charlie "Bird" Parker, Max Roach, Col. Bruce Hampton, Eddie Roberts and others. He even tells a story about how he and Stevie Wonder ended up wrestling by a champagne fountain at a fancy after-show party. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Nick Buda:    Nick's experience in playing and recording music goes back to his freshman year in high school, where he played in a popular band that had a single on college radio. This led to his first major industry gig with Mac Gayden (co-wrote iconic hit "Everlasting Love") while still in high school. Within a few months of being out on the road, Nick moved to Boston where he attended the Berklee College of Music and got to see what real playing was all about. With his ego immediately put in check and his head full of new musical ideas , he got the gig with Col. Bruce Hampton and the Codetalkers, which was a band he had loved to play along to in high school. During this time, Nick got to play with so many of the amazing musicians he had only heard in his headphones such as Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Bob Wier, and the late great Richie Hayward (from Little Feat) who joined Nick multiple times for some unforgettable double drumset gigs.  Upon moving back to Nashville in 2002, Nick picked up right where he left off, when he was asked to play with Cyndi Thompson, starting another new chapter in his career. It was the first of many tours that would follow with such diverse artists as Edwin McCain, Hank Williams Jr., Jedd Hughes, Maia Sharp, Emily West, and many others. Playing with these various artists has led to performing at so many great iconic venues such as the Grand Ole Opry along with TV appearances on many of the late night and daytime talk shows. It also led to a whole new side of Nick's career as a session drummer.  Nick's unique drumming style combines his delicate touch with a soulful r&b backbeat and an explosive energy, which adds depth and excitement to his tracks. He's never afraid to take chances with music, which sets him apart as a player. Bruce, and Oteil reflects on some wild and inconceivable tales about his beloved mentor.  You'll hear about how Col. Bruce could intercept people's thoughts through certain stages of dreams, the story of an evening when Bruce and his band were forced to play James Brown songs at gunpoint, how Bruce's music “dismantled” Widespread Panic (in their own words) during the early stages of their career and almost caused them to break up, and a whole lot more.  It's impossible to cover the entire realm of Col. Bruce's anomalous nature in one podcast, but Jerry, Mike, and Oteil pack in a ton of captivating stories and commentary in this episode.  You'll even hear their insights on the craziest thing that they think Col. Bruce ever did! Bruce Hampton and even includes one-on-one interviews with the man himself.  Jerry still works as a freelance writer for publications like Atlanta magazine, Emory Medicine magazine, and Super Lawyers magazine, and is also a playwright, having co-written eight plays that have all made it to the stage.  In this episode you'll hear him talk in-depth about the legacy of Col. This week on Comes a Time Oteil and Mike talk with Jerry Grillo, who recently published a biography about Col. Bruce Hampton titled The Music and Mythocracy of Col. Bruce Hampton: A Basically True Biography. In this conversation, the three dive deep on the mystical life of Col. Bruce ever did!Jerry Grillo is an award-winning music journalist and a science writer at Georgia Tech. Jerry worked for a variety of different newspapers and magazines as an editor, writer, and photographer and has produced multiple regional and national award-winning stories and columns. In April he published The Music and Mythocracy of Col. Bruce Hampton: A Basically True Biography, which details the life of Col. Bruce, and tell wondrous tales about Bruce's incredible life.-----------This podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. This week on Comes a Time, Oteil and Mike catch up! You'll hear your two favorite podcast hosts discuss a myriad of subjects ranging from working hard at their respective art forms in their salad days, to differences between performing in large venues versus small ones, to weirdness on the New York subway, and much more. The two converse as if there's no microphone in front of them, as Mike tells an interesting story about a recent standup experience he had that “transcended time,” and Oteil talks about opening for a crowd of 20 people at Red Rocks when the Aquarium Rescue Unit was in its infancy. The duo also discusses new skills that musicians and artists will bring to the table after having a year to practice in quarantine, and they each provide surprising insights on stage fright. Lastly, you'll hear Mike pay respect to his mentors, who he equates to Oteil's mentor, Col. Bruce Hampton.   ----------- This podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Please leave us a rating or review on iTunes! My guest today is bassist, Todd Smallie. After his family moved to Atlanta at the age of 14, Todd got very involved with the local scene and attended the Atlanta Institute of Music, where he got to learn from the likes of Jimmy Herring. Connections with Herring, Tinsley Ellis, Col. Bruce Hampton, and others led him to an audition with The Derek Trucks Band in his early 20s. He toured and recorded with Derek up until 2010 when Derek teamed up with Susan Tedeschi to start Tedeschi Trucks Band. Todd didn't sit stagnant for too long, as he started playing with JJ Grey & Mofro just a few months later, and has spent the last 11 years as a member of that group. (NOTE: The band, Greyhounds, made up of former Mofro members Anthony Farrell and Andrew Trube were my guests on the very first episode of this podcast). When he's not touring, Todd can be found playing at bars, clubs, and festivals with an assortment of acts all over Colorado. In our conversation, we chat about getting back on the road for the first time since COVID, his upbringing and history as a player, and all of the new projects he's involved in locally. This week on Comes A Time, Luther Dickinson and Brandon "Taz" Niederauer join Oteil and Mike for an action-packed episode chock full of captivating conversation. Oteil, Luther and Taz discuss their connection to Col. Bruce Hampton and the impact that his teachings had on each of them, and Taz describes what it was like to play with Bootsy Collins. You'll also hear Luther ask Mike about the conceptual thought process behind joke delivery in stand-up comedy, and Mike's insightful comparisons between improvisational music and stand-up. Luther Dickinson is a guitarist and vocalist best known for his work in the North Mississippi Allstars, a soulful blues-rooted group that he co-founded with his brother Cody in 1996. The son of legendary Memphis record producer Jim Dickinson, Luther has lived a life decorated with music since he was an infant. His soaring slide guitar playing has landed him on stage with legendary artists like The Black Crowes and Phil Lesh, and when he speaks about music his thoughtful approach to his creative process is unmistakable. The Mississippi Allstars 2019 album Up and Rolling can be listened to here. Brandon "Taz" Niederauer is one of the most exciting guitar players in the world- and he's only 18 years old. Taz's talent has been readily apparent from a very young age, as he had already played with The Scorpions, Gregg Allman, Stevie Nicks, and Derek Trucks by the time he was 15. Needless to say, Taz is the premier name for young guitarists. His wildly energetic playing and expressive note selection have allowed him to stand as a beacon of light for instrumentalists in an increasingly digitized era of music, and his passion for his craft shines through when he speaks about it. ----------- This podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Mike & Oteil welcome legendary bass player Dave Schools of Widespread Panic. Dave shares his approach to consuming media and how his political views have evolved since his childhood in Richmond, Virginia, as the three cover the current political climate and the polarization we see today. The conversation takes a turn away from current events to the wonders of music, as they discuss Col. Bruce Hampton and his influence, how dancing styles differ between Grateful Dead and Allman Brothers fans, and Dave shares stories from growing up and going to Dead shows. The three bond over their appreciation for Frank Zappa. David Allen Schools is a bass player and founding member of American rock band Widespread Panic. He is also a record producer, songwriter and journalist with articles published in a wide variety of music magazines. Schools lives in Sonoma County, California with his two dogs; when not on tour he likes to garden. Schools is an innovator on the bass with a non-traditional approach that has given him a unique voice on the instrument. With his primary band, Widespread Panic, he plays a six-string Modulus Quantum 6 bass that affords him a wide range of sounds that are further enhanced by an envelope filter and octave pedal. Influenced by an early desire to play drums and childhood piano lessons, Schools has deviated from, though not abandoned, the established rhythm role of the bass and created a more melodic, improvisational style that has been referred to as “lead bass.”   This podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Col. Bruce Hampton was a legendary musician, actor, producer, and all around nice guy. He was in Sling Blade, the Run the Jewels video for “Blockbuster Night Part 1,” Space Ghost Coast to Coast, and that's just the tip of his IMDb page. Col. Bruce was also a musical pioneer and one hell of a nice guy. I had the honor of interviewing Bruce backstage at Suwannee Roots Revival 2016. This was one of the first episodes we recorded for The Marinade. A lot has changed since then, from production to interview style, but we want you all to have a chance to hear this wonderful conversation. As was his way, he made me feel like an old friend. Rest in peace, Col. Bruce. The music in this episode is from Deadman De Los Santos off of the forthcoming EP 'Deadman and Stranger.' The EP will be released on April 6th.

The dream of a democratic internet has become a dystopia of unregulated monopolies. Creators are being devastated - deprived of their income and control by a handful of tech behemoths. That's the analysis of Jonathan Taplin in the new book MOVE FAST AND BREAK THINGS: How Facebook, Google, and Amazon Cornered Culture and Undermined Democracy. Taplin is director emeritus of the Annenberg Innovation Lab at the University of Southern California. He's had a wide-ranging career that began in the 1960s as road manager for Bob Dylan and The Band, movie producer for Martin Scorsese, and - as a consequence - he was the executive producer of The Last Waltz, the landmark 1976 concert film documenting the final show by that The Band. Our conversation took place before a live audience at Nashville's City Winery in March 2017 as part of a book tour stop presented by Nashville's Who Knew speaker series. Taplin outlines his case against Google, Facebook and Apple and offers some ideas to tilt the playing field back toward the interests of creators. Also in this hour, an unaired interview with Col. Bruce Hampton and a historic return to the Ryman Auditorium by Emmylou Harris.

Backstage at The Enharmonic

August 28, 2016: In this episode I get to talk with one of my all-time favorite drummers, Jeff Sipe.  I've been a fan of Jeff's since 1994, when I first heard him with Col. Bruce Hampton and The Aquarium Rescue Unit.  Since then I've been able to see his trio live, have seen him perform with Jeff Coffin's Mu'tet on numerous occasions and have even been able to perform with Jeff Sipe for the Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration featuring Warren Haynes. In this episode Jeff talks about his early drum lessons in Germany, playing on a cutting board during his first lesson, why there is no background music in his world, how a jazz competition award in high school changed his perspective, and why he considers teaching a sacred thing.
