Who needs Spanish when you've got a saxophone? A music-lover proves that disability access is just another improvisation in Havana's jazz scene. Best viewed as a video https://youtu.be/Qz9Rm89LHD0 Summary Danny, Health Hats, chronicles his week-long trip to Cuba in January for a music-cultural exchange. Using a wheelchair and playing baritone saxophone, he traveled with a group of 11 from the States, organized by Dan Fox and Arlington MA's Morningside Studios. The group participated in a "Band Camp" hosted by the Havana Music School, receiving daily individual lessons, rehearsing in ensembles, and performing Cuban music at a restaurant. Despite Danny's initial anxieties about traveling with his disability and instrument, he found Cubans accommodating and helpful. The podcast features an interview with Claudia Fumero, manager of the Havana Music School, who discusses: The school's focus on teaching Cuban music to foreign visitors How the business began and evolved from connecting students with teachers in their homes to having a dedicated facility Her dream of expanding with more instruments and creating a small café where people can play music The episode is interspersed with musical performances by the ensembles, including renditions of "Sofrito" and "Afro Blue" by Mongo Santamaria. The group also attended the Havana Jazz Festival each night during their stay. Click here to view the printable newsletter with images. More readable than a transcript, which can also be found below. My nighttime voices bombarded me. How can you go to Cuba as a musician? You're not good enough. Your wheelchair won't make it over their crumbling roads and sidewalks. I should be excited about this chance of a lifetime. I completely trust Dan Fox, our guide and arranger. My disabilities do not define me. Helpful people are everywhere.
Ever heard of Jug? Gene Ammons along with Sonny Stitt? Maybe Willis Jackson or Red Holloway. These cats were mercenaries on the band stand counting off Cherokee at some ridiculous tempo that would separate the common artist from the professional. Take a trip down to Jim and Andy's and you just might see my guest with Al McKibbon or Cal Tjader playing Afro Cuban melodies with Ray Barretto, or Stomping at the Savoy with mainstay Kenny Burrell. Jazz is really black blues and for a long time a jazzers education was on the streets up the corner and round block from Chess Studios where cats like Ramsey Lewis and Ahmad Jamal paved the way for younger minority improvisers to develop an identity. My guest is as accomplished a player as those listed above. He whistles while he works playing chromatic hypnotic chords to tunes like Afro Blue, mas Ritmo Caliente and Along Came Betty. He came of age in the old school back in the game when albums were being written about the Tender Gender, melodic invention with no words just sounds- mainly acoustic with drummers like Joe Dukes, Idris Muhammad, Elvin Jones, Dick Birk, the aforementioned Tjader, Joe Morello and Art Blakey. These cats were messengers of music with an understanding of their significance to pass the music along to those who were younger, educate them on the history the technique the looseness and unique sound that would ultimately pave the way for their own careers. His collaborations are noteworthy because he got his shot with the masters. Rasa an Roland Kirk, another free king in Charles Mingus, Roy Haynes and Frank Foster. Wait! There's more! Listen to the full episode on Patreon: patreon.com/blkgirltalkspop | All social media: linktr.ee/blkgirltalkspop Hey y'all! It's been a while, so I'm so grateful to you for coming back. This month will be another music haul! First, I'll bring back the segment Hear Me, Hear Me and introduce a new segment called Where Did the Black TV Shows Go. Then on my Patreon, I'll dive into my problems with One Tree Hill's Drama Queens podcast. After that, I'll discuss the music I've bought! I'll be reviewing the first albums from the Black pop artist Lu Kala (Kah-luh) and the jazz artist Christie Dashiell (Duh-sheel), a former member of the a capella group Afro-Blue. On my Patreon, I'll discuss Meghan Trainor's second album Thank You and GWSN's (Go-won Sun-yuh's), or Girls in the Park's, mini-album The Other Side of the Moon. Disclaimer(s): First, I want apologize for any audio issues in advance. Also, I don't know any of these people, so I'm not speaking on anyone's behalf. I just make comments based on the words and actions of others. I don't intend to cause harm or offense, but I apologize for any words which could have communicated a lack of empathy or intentional thoughtlessness. Please respectfully let me know what I could have said better or seen in a different light. I want to keep learning so I can create opportunities for conversation and change, and I hope that you will grow with me. Corrections Corner: I referred to Sondi as a 3b as a shorthand for having lighter skin, but Black people with lighter skin can have type 4 hair, so my apologies for any offense. Furthermore, Matthew accused Sondi of being IMmature. The current Run the World trailer is different from the trailer I saw during the summer (maybe there was backlash to suggesting that another light-skinned biracial woman would be the lead of a Black show...). The trailer below gives the FOUR stars of the show time to shine. Christie Dashiell effortlessly scatted in Afro Blue's cover of American Boy, NOT Killing me Softly. Christie Dashiell's album is HIT.

This is a black arts and culture site. We will be exploring the African Diaspora via the writing, performance, both musical and theatrical (film and stage), as well as the visual arts of Africans in the Diaspora and those influenced by these aesthetic forms of expression. I am interested in the political and social ramifications of art on society, specifically movements supported by these artists and their forebearers. It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes. Ashay! From the Archives 1.
