Filmmaker Cyrus Moussavi Finds Stories Where the Music Lives

Artist as Leader

Cyrus Moussavi has carved out a career that is as improbable as it is original. Raised in Iowa in a bicultural Iranian American household, Cyrus grew up spending summers in Iran and the rest of the year steeped in his father's love of prog rock and his mother's passion for traditional Iranian music. That early immersion in disparate sound worlds laid the groundwork for a lifelong obsession with music—not as a performer, but as a listener, connector, and storyteller. After studying economics and philosophy in college, Cyrus gravitated toward filmmaking, not to make conventional movies but to explore how visual storytelling could capture, preserve and transmit music and the lives of those who make it.As a filmmaker, Cyrus has developed a body of work that's both deeply collaborative and boldly inventive. His films include “I Snuck Off the Slave Ship,” a science-fiction documentary co-directed with the visionary artist and musician Lonnie Holley that screened at Sundance and BlackStar, among many other festivals and galleries, and the upcoming “Somebody's Gone,” a feature-length film about gospel legend Brother Theotis Taylor that he is co-directing with Brother Theotis' son, Hubert. And as a music archivist and promoter, since 2019 Cyrus has led the influential reissue label Mississippi Records, where he works closely with artists and their families to bring overlooked and under-celebrated music from around the world to new audiences. In this interview, Cyrus discusses how his early experiences shaped his eclectic sensibility, what it means to ethically archive music across cultures and how he sees his work as both creative practice and cultural preservation.

Aquarium Drunkard - SIDECAR (TRANSMISSIONS) - Podcast

Welcome back to Transmissions, your weekly conversational series from Aquarium Drunkard in partnership with the Talkhouse Podcast Network. This week on the show, a long awaited return visit from Lonnie Holley. The Atlanta artist joins us alongside his manager, Matt Arnett, son of William Arnett, the Southern art curator and collector who brought Holley to the attention of the art world in the 1980s.  In those days, Holley often worked directly with trash—taking discarded materials to forge his sculptures. Philip K. Dick has said “the symbols of the divine show up in our world initially at the trash stratum,” and in Lonnie's case, that truth is made evident.  His art draws from what's thrown out—a theme he returns to often—but also from personal tragedy: first artistic project was carving headstones for his sister's two children, who died in a house fire in Alabama in 1979. Since then, his found-object assemblages, paintings, and collages have endeared him to the fine art world—they have even been displayed in the Smithsonian and the White House—in part due to the patronage and care of Arnett's father.  But the younger Arnett helped Holley get on the path he walks know, as an oracular sculpture of sound. Lonnie and Matt join us ahead of the March 21st release of Holley's new album, Tonky. Crafted with Irish producer Jacknife Lee (R.E.M., U2, The Killers) and featuring guests like Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse, harpist Mary Lattimore, rappers Billy Woods and Open Mike Eagle, spoken word from Saul Williams, and others, Tonky rattles with blues-punk-industrial art folk anthems. We discussed the new album, Holley's poetic metaphysics, and his work with kindred spirit Richard Swift.   You can read a full transcript of this conversation at Aquarium Drunkard, where you'll find 20 years worth of playlists, recommendations, reviews, interviews, podcasts, essays, and more. With your support, here's to another decade. Subscribe at Aquarium Drunkard. Stream a playlist of bumper music featured on Transmissions, as well as selections from our guests. Mesmerising dance floor tapestries from a singular experimental musician. Can you reinvent the human voice? The oldest musical instrument in existence, our voices are the foundation of music as we know it, and few push its limits in electronic music today like Lyra Pramuk. On her masterful debut, Fountain the Berlin-based, US-born artist's voice was the only instrument. No drums, no synths—just her voice warped, synthesized and layered to achieve orchestral-like electronics. Five years on from her breakout, Pramuk's practice has steadily evolved, with a continued interest in ideas of folk and futurism, and how technology can enable us to build community beyond boundaries of time and space. There's a holistic nature to her artistry, one that extends seamlessly into her DJing (she's also a quantum physicist by training). As she explains in the Q&A accompanying this week's RA Podcast, she sees her work as "part of a continuum of sacred, folkloric, and communal music represented by many different subcultures and communities across the world." It's an approach that, like much of Pramuk's output, feels explicitly choral in nature. The first voice we hear on the mix comes from Lonnie Holley, his woozy Southern drawl calling out, "Earth will be there to catch us when we fall." (Although, you have to wonder, if we keep flogging the Earth, will it?) More voices follow across an eye-catching tracklist, from the poetry of friends (Nadia Marcus) to esoteric French chantresses from the '80s (Anne Gillis), while Pramuk wraps an extensive amount of her own forthcoming material around tracks from SD Laika, Leyland Kirby, rRoxymore and 33EMYBW, to name just a few. By the end, voice and noise become indistinguishable—stammering, glitchy vocals colliding with an orchestra of instruments. The effect is mesmerising. Unfolding as one continuous composition, RA.979 exists somewhere between an ambient set at Kwia and the main stage at Unsound, voices and textures blurred into a fluid tapestry of sound. It's a singular offering to the series from a singular artist. @lyra_songs Read the interview and find the tracklist at ra.co/podcast/980

Lonnie Holley faithfully follows his heart by making art and music out of hardship, curiosity, and biological necessity. His practice is by no means typical as he does not work out of a studio, but improvises on the spot. Each performance unfolds organically and speaks to his evolving experimentation. Holley’s new album, Tonky, is set for release on March 21 and features “Protest With Love.”

This week on Transmissions: Camae Ayewa, better known as Moor Mother. As one-half of the Black Quantum Futurism collective, a creative project she founded with Rasheedah Philips, Ayewa has focused her considerable energies on “the manipulation of space-time in order to see into possible futures, and/or collapse space-time into a desired future in order to bring about that future's reality.” As the front-person of the incendiary jazz punk group Irreversible Entanglements, she's let it rip on a series of albums released by International Anthem & Don Giovanni Records. Last year's Protect Your Light found the band moving to the legendary Impulse! Records.   Along the way, she's released records under the Moor Mother banner, like 2021's Black Encyclopedia of the Air and 2022's Jazz Codes. Her latest is The Great Bailout, a record that functions at times like a sonic horror movie, while also possessing tremendous passages of beauty. Joined by guests like Lonnie Holley, Kyle Kidd, and Sistazz of the Nitty Gritty—past Transmissions guest Angel Bat Dawid delivers an absolutely breathtaking clarinet solo out ‘South Sea”—the album finds Moor Mother transmuting jazz, noise, rock, folk, gospel, classical music—melting down genres in a poetic churn. Moor Mother plays history and time like a science fiction story, bending temporal moments in a psychedelic flurry. This conversation flows in similar way. Join us to jump through timelines, ponder the Mandela Effect, and untangle histories with Moor Mother on Transmissions. To close out the year, Brittany is sitting down with Lonnie Holley. He's a painter, sculptor, and musician who released his latest album, Oh Me Oh My, in early 2023. In it he sings of his difficult childhood growing up in Jim Crow Alabama where he was sold, beat, and effectively enslaved. But today he sings of hope. He's been on a journey to heal his pain, and the pain of the generations that came before and the ones that will follow. It's a story of gratitude.

US artist Lonnie Holley is a prolific maker of things - whether it's his assemblages of found objects or the fluid, jazz-style improvisations of his music. He's one of those polymath creative spirits who don't separate one artform from the other. But his life of improvisational creativity wasn't a certainty for Lonnie, who was born 73 years ago in the Jim Crow era in a hotbed of racial politics in America's Deep South. Classicist Mary Beard examines art inspired by the lives and excesses of the Caesars, who wielded power in cruel and immoral ways. They established a visual propaganda machine - minting themselves in coins, sculpture, paintings, mosaics, and even baked goods! Their art historical legacy is however contemporary and omnipresent. First broadcast November 2022.

Luminary Lonnie Holley released Broken Mirror: A Selfie Reflection with Matt White in 2022. The amalgam of afro-futurism and cosmic southern funk make for a rollicking time for a juxtaposition for two artists that make for surprising collaborators. Holley, born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1950, has dedicated his life to improvisational creativity in the form of both sound and visual art. White, a Virginia-based producer and musician who's worked with the likes of Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, Sharon Van Etten & the Mountain Goats. “I am an African-American, colored, Black or from the negros that were brought to America on slave ships,” says Holley. “So when I do something like ‘I Snuck Off the Slave Ship' or ‘Broken Mirror Reflections,' [those were] two different pieces of music, but aren't we still bound by those conditions? We're bound by slavery and we're bound by the fear of the broken mirror.” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

No meio do balanço, a trinca celebra o discurso do Chico em Portugal durante a providencial entrega atrasada no prêmio Camões. E a trilha que embala a episódio abre com I Am a Part of the Wondere com Lonnie Holley e fecha com Rodrigo y Gabriela e The Ride Of The Mind. The 73 year old outsider artist has pivoted towards music in later life, with the opening of his bio on Wikipedia reading, "He was born the 7th of 27 children during the Jim Crow era and claims to have been traded for a bottle of whiskey when he was four". This though is highly accessible and in no way off-puting music, that at its best draws a link from 1800's slavery to modern variants.

Lonnie Holley's Oh Me, Oh My is a continuation of his exploration of the darker rooms of our history that were the centerpiece of his 2018 album Mith. On that release, Holley seemed content to simply illuminate for the sake of awareness. Oh Me, Oh My finds the lauded artist/poet/musician settling for nothing less than carrying the listener to a home in the light that everyone, Holley seems to argue, deserves no matter what hardship came before. It's a message of hope that will thaw even the coldest of hearts, and an early (and easy) contender for the best album you are likely to hear in 2023.PLUS!
