In this episode, Da Bruhs tackles Nigger: An Autobiography by comedian, civil rights activist, and truth-teller Dick Gregory—a bold, unapologetic account of a life lived at the intersection of poverty, pain, protest, and punchlines. First published in 1964, Nigger is not just an autobiography; it's a declaration, a protest, and a deeply personal journey into the soul of a man who refused to be defined or diminished by America's most loaded word.Gregory reclaims the slur that once sought to dehumanize him, using it as both the title of his book and the entry point into a story that mixes sharp wit with heartbreaking realism. From his childhood in St. Louis, raised in deep poverty, to his rise as one of the first Black comedians to break the color line in white nightclubs, Gregory uses humor as a weapon and a shield. But this memoir isn't just about comedy—it's about protest, sacrifice, and the cost of telling the truth. The episode explores how Gregory's political awakening came at the height of the civil rights movement, shifting his career from comedy to activism. His story becomes a raw chronicle of racism in America, a mirror reflecting the hypocrisy of a nation that celebrates freedom while denying it to so many. The podcast highlights Gregory's voice—fierce, unfiltered, and radically honest—as he details encounters with injustice, brushes with the FBI, and moments of deep personal loss.We also unpack the legacy of the book's title. Gregory famously wrote in the introduction:"Dear Momma — Wherever you are, if ever you hear the word ‘nigger' again, remember they are advertising my book.”
Welcome to our new series, “The Beat Goes On,” where we will celebrate the work and enduring influence of Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, and the other writers whom we identify as “The Beats.” - that crop of artists who worked to expand our consciousness, exploring the hidden possibilities of post WW2 America in the 1950s - Other significant names to be explored: Diane Di Prima, Tuli Kupferberg, Ed Sanders, Delmore Schwarz, Anne Waldman, Carolyn Cassidy, and many others. We will also include jazz musicians like Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Dizzy Gillespie, whose sinuous Bebop lines influenced the expansive prose of Kerouac and poetry of Ginsberg, and comedians like Lenny Bruce, Lord Buckley, Brother Theodore and Dick Gregory with their scathing critique and unmasking of our nation's hypocrisy beneath the self-deceptive rhetoric of American exceptionalism. And, then there are their artistic children like Hunter S. Thompson, Charles Bukowski, Tom Waits and Lou Reed…. The list goes on.First off: we need to define that confusing term “beat”… Once the satirists were able to pin them down, the Beats and their devotees were labelled “Beatniks” (a cold war epithet) and put into a farcical box. This is where I, as a child, first became aware of them through the character of Maynard G. Krebs on the Dobie Gillis show. The child-like, pre-hippie with the dirty sweatshirt and goatee, indelibly played by Bob Denver, later of Gilligan fame. He was a gentle figure of fun, not to be taken seriously. But, the truth goes so much deeper. Kerouac defined Beat as short for “beatitude” - a state of grace, a codex for the maturing “peace and love” Baby Boom generation coming up - those in search of existence's deeper meaning beyond the consumerist and war-like American culture being offered as our only option.Well, boy, do we need them now! HENRY MILLER INTERVIEWOur inaugural offering is a 1964 interview with the writer Henry Miller, of TROPIC OF CANCER, TROPIC OF CAPRICORN, and THE ROSY CRUCIFIXION TRILOGY fame, among many others. This is an insightful, in depth look at a artist of gargantuan influence. Miller was interviewed by Audrey June Wood in Minneapolis during a speaking tour; he considered this interview to be one of his best. Miller discourses on some of his favorite books and authors and the struggle of writing well. It was released on Smithsonian/ Folkways Records.Strictly speaking, Miller was not a Beat - he preceded them, and out lived many of them, making it to 88 in 1980, but he was their spiritual and artistic pathfinder.Living hand to mouth, on the edge, abroad in Paris, writing free form in a raw, explicit, semi-autobiographical manner, telling the truth about sex, love, art, and struggle - he set the artistic compass for the Beats - as Dostoevsky and Walt Whitman had done before him. They are all part of a chain - a chain of searchers, and we are fortunate to have these lights to guide us on our own personal journeys to self realization. Please enjoy…THE BEAT GOES ON.

Ashton Forbes became interested in a leaked video purporting to show missing Malaysian Airlines MH370 being portalled to another location via three rotating plasma orbs during its disappearance on March 8, 2014. He has accumulated evidence that the craft was taken en route from Malaysia to China carrying 20 scientists who had developed a superconducting microchip that was going to be patented or developed in China. Forbes claims that early conspiracy theories by the comedian Dick Gregory and others pointing to the Carlyle Group, the Rothschilds, and/or Blackstone wanting to kill the scientists so they could assert ownership of the superconducting microchip patent were misplaced. Forbes claims that the MH-370 operation was conducted by the US intelligence community that wanted to stop China gaining control of the superconducting microchip technology, which represented a breakthrough technology. Forbes discusses how MH370 was portalled to Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean after disappearing en route to China. Dr. Michael Salla introduced the corroborating testimony of a secret space program participant, Mark Domizio, who claims that one of his alters, a cloned version of himself based at a DUMB facility at Diego Garcia, was tasked to kill a crew that disassembled MH-370's tail and wing sections. Forbes next discusses the controversy raised by Kim Dotcom, who offered a $100,000 bounty to anyone who could prove the leaked MH370 video was a hoax. When a still photographer, Jonas De Ro, released images he had taken from an airplane of clouds allegedly used in the leaked video, Dotcom claimed that proof now existed that the video had been debunked and offered to pay the bounty. Forbes initially thought the video had been debunked and made a tweet to that effect, but later learned that Jonas' released cloud formation images did not predate the leaked MH370 video. Forbes also discusses a mysterious letter he received from a covert intelligence operative who encouraged him to continue his efforts and that it was indeed the US intelligence community that was behind the disappearance of MH370. Finally, Forbes discussed plasma balls, cold fusion, gravity waves, and other advanced technology projects, many of which he believes are still too dangerous to be released to the world. American Heart of Darkness: Volume I:The Transformation of the American Republic into a PathocracyJan 3, 2021These days, most Americans know that the country has serious problems. Problems that will have to be addressed before the country can move forward. What are these problems? Where did they come from? Before we can move forward we have to know where we are and how we got there.American Heart of Darkness paints an unvarnished picture of the seeds of destruction that were sown into the foundations of the Republic from the very beginning. How did slavery come about in the land of the free? How did a pre-Columbian native population, in North America alone, of over eighteen million (yes, you heard it right) native peoples dwindle down to about two hundred thousand? Was it really Small Pox? Why has a people who constantly talk about freedom, democracy, equality, human rights, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness continually practiced racism, genocide, and war? How do drugs come into the country, and who is really behind the most profitable product sold in the world? There are also other unanswered questions that need to be explored:Why were thousands of the worst Nazi war criminals given refuge in the U.S.?Who financed Hitler?Where did Hitler get his master race and genocidal ideas from? Was Lee Harvey Oswald a C.I.A. agent? Were Oswald, Sirhan Sirhan, Ted Kaczynski, Timothy McVey, and the Peoples Temple all mind control, MKULTRA, subjects? What really happened in the Jeffery MacDonald, so-called Fatal Vision case? How does hundreds of billions of dollars come into the United States every year without detection? The answers to these questions, and many more, will surprise you! They are not in the History books, although they should be. American Heart of Darkness, Volume I, explores the ugly side of America that has been hidden for far too long, and it is literally killing us. This book is not for the reader looking for an uplifting story to escape everyday life for a few hours. It is for true patriots who are sick and tired of being lied to and stolen from. It is for those who know they need to do something but do not know where to start. It is for those who feel powerless and that Americas problems are far too big for little ol me to handle. It is for those with the courage to go from darkness to light. As comedian and activist Dick Gregory once said, If you been in the DARK for so long, LIGHT will hurt your eyes. This book will hurt your eyes. The reader will be shocked, then angry, then motivated, and finally, in the authors next two books, empowered and liberated. It is better to see where we are and where we need to go, right now, before it is too late.Congratulations! If you have read this far this book is probably for you. Please keep in mind the universal truth that with any form of government, the leaders only have the power that the people allow them have. This was true in India when a little skinny guy named Gandhi with no money and only a rag wrapped around his middle took on the British Empire, and won! There is no question that the American people have the power to reclaim a government that is clearly not being run for them. We have to empower ourselves to take this government back from only a handful of selfish and greedy individuals, who have proven that they only care about making more and more money. Let us all stop giving them the power that belongs to us. Reading this book is a beginning, and then we will talk about what to do about it in the authors next two books!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

A groundbreaking comic from the 1950s who blended standup skill with sly racial and social commentary, Dick Gregory went on to a career that mixed writing, performing, and social activism for 5 decades. As was common in the 50s, Dick's gift for comedy was discovered by his army buddies. Hugh Hefner gave him his first big career break, filling in for Professor Irwin Corey at the Playboy Club (a gesture that Dick never forgot to acknowledge). From there Dick played top clubs, becoming increasingly political in his approach. In 1968 he ran for President on a "peace" platform, and he became a frequent sight at all manner of movement events, from anti-apartheid to feminism to Native American rights. Dick also became known for his strong commitment to vegetarianism and animal welfare. As always, find extended cuts below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Dick Gregory? Dick Gregory always credited Hugh Hefner for booking him into the Playboy Club at a time when black comics found it hard to get a gig. Have you ever thought about eating raw food as opposed to cook food? Khepra Anu is a Raw Foodist, and author who has dedicated his life to sharing his knowledge of the power that the Live Food lifestyle combined with systematic fasting has on the body. Over the past 20 years, he has hosted numerous health retreats in the U.S. and internationally, during which he guides participants through his unique approach to repairing and detoxifying the human body through the scientific and mechanical application of coconut water, fresh juices, and living food. During the interview, he will discuss his early childhood growing up in Monticello, New York into a very religious family. It was during that time that he first learned about a very profound scripture from the Bible in Genesis 1:29 that stated “Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.” After reading that scripture his eyes were opened and he never looked back. He realized that we should be eating more of what God made and less of what man-made. He also mentioned the great Dick Gregory, who also planted a seed the first time Khapra got to hear him lecture, “he was the one who opened up the Bible and said, this is, you know, we supposed to eat this way.” Our conversation delved into various aspects of nutrition, particularly focusing on raw foods, salt, and fasting. Khapra emphasized the importance of consuming a wide variety of foods, including exotic fruits, fatty fruits, and salty fruits like olives, to ensure a balanced intake of nutrients. He discussed different types of salt, favoring Celtic sea salt and real salt over Himalayan salt due to concerns about its quality. The conversation also touched on the benefits of fasting, particularly coconut water fasting, as a way to detoxify the body and allow it to heal naturally. Retreats focusing on holistic health experiences, including sun gazing, meditation, yoga, and coconut water fasting, were highlighted as opportunities for deep rest and rejuvenation. Overall, the dialogue underscored the importance of embracing natural foods and lifestyle practices for optimal health and well-being.

Jackson, active in the fight for equal rights, had tried multiple times to register to vote in Alabama and was denied each time. When Jimmie Lee Jackson saw his frail 80-year-old grandfather rudely turned away from the registrar's office in 1962 after attempting to register to vote in Marion, Ala. He knew he had to join the civil rights movement. On Feb. 18, 1965, he was among more than 200 people participating in a night march in Marion. Before they had walked a block, they were confronted by state troopers and the police chief, who ordered them to disperse.Jackson and his mother huddled for safety in a café. When Jackson's grandfather entered the café bloodied and beaten, the young man tried to take him to a hospital. But they were quickly shoved back by a crowd of club-swinging troopers and terrified marchers. Another trooper pulled his pistol and shot Jackson in the stomach. It was two hours before Jackson arrived at the hospital in Selma. He died eight days later. At one of two services for Jackson, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. told a crowd of 2,000: “Jimmie Lee Jackson's death says to us that we must work passionately and unrelentingly to make the American dream a reality. To Sanford Biggers, the past, present, and future are intertwined and all part of one big, long now. Over the past three decades, the Harlem-based artist has woven various threads of place and time—in ways not dissimilar to a hip-hop D.J. or a quilter—to create clever, deeply metaphorical, darkly humorous, and often beautiful work across a vast array of mediums, including painting, sculpture, video, photography, music, and performance. Among his standout works are “Oracle” (2021), a 25-foot-tall cast bronze sculpture that combines a Greco-Roman form with an African mask; his “BAM” series (2015) of gunshot statuettes; and his ongoing “Codex” series of quilts, which have, over his past decade of making them, become an especially potent and ritualistic part of his art-making.On this episode, Biggers talks about the influence that musicians such as Mahalia Jackson, Ray Charles, and Stevie Wonder have had on his art; why he thinks of himself as a “material polyglot”; and why religious and spiritual works like reliquaries, shrines, and “power objects” are the bedrock of his practice.Special thanks to our Season 8 sponsor, Van Cleef & Arpels.Show notes:[00:26] Sanford Biggers[03:55] “Sanford Biggers with Yasi Alipour”[07:14] “The Playful, Political Art of Sanford Biggers”[12:34] Moon Medicin[13:36] Mahalia Jackson[13:39] Ray Charles[13:40] Charles Mingus[13:41] Thelonious Monk[15:32] Stevie Wonder[16:06] Prince[18:00] Dick Gregory[18:01] Richard Pryor[18:02] Redd Foxx[18:47] “BAM” series[27:17] “re:mancipation”[29:05] Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture[30:08] John Biggers[31:41] “Codeswitch” at the California African American Museum[33:28] Dr. Leslie King-Hammond[33:30] Maryland Institute College of Art[37:47] University High School[38:23] Morehouse College[38:33] Art Institute of Chicago[47:34] Isamu Noguchi[47:36] Martin Puryear[49:06] “Lotus”[50:31] “Orin”[55:52] “Meet Me on the Equinox”[55:52] “Back to the Stars”

Dick Gregory said, "When we are born, we have one thing to do. All raindrops have one job... to work its way back Home to the river, to the stream, to the ocean. When you come here, the only thing you have to do is work your way back Home."But wait-- while that raindrop was making its way back home, it was already, always water! It was water while it was appearing as the cloud, it was water as it fell to the ground, it was water as it mixed with mud, it was water as it merged with The Water, The Ocean. It was water all along the journey. It didn't need to meditate to become water. It didn't have to pray, practice, or fast to become water. It just had to realize 'I Am Water'... and feel the presence of it Self.
