Tonight's Jazz Feature is one of the first great soloists on the vibraphone: the amazing Lionel Hampton. This was his first session after he signed up with Jazz producer Norman Granz. Granz wished to present the artistic side of Lionel and this recording does the job in a big way. Lionel, who's style works in so many contexts is joined here for the first time by the great Canadian pianist Oscar Peterson, bassist Ray Brown and master drummer Buddy Rich. The band selected the 6 tunes and delivered them with swing and soul. All of this was recorded in New York on September 2, 1953. Lionel the magnificent!

You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To”. Como es habitual en los trabajos que publica «Sedajazz Records», excelente álbum.

This episode begins with Pärt's “Hymn to a Great City.” (That would be New York.) Elsewhere, there are songs, setting Langston Hughes and Mark Van Doren. Oscar Peterson plays a pop song, adding various musical ingredients. Finally, there is a tribute to Edith Mathis, the Swiss soprano, who has died at eighty-seven. Much to listen to, and maybe even think about. Pärt, “Hymn to a Great City” Wheeler, “If I Had a Wife” Tchaikovsky/Wild, Pas de quatre (“Dance of the Cygnets”) from “Swan Lake” Bonds, “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” Prokofiev, Sonata for Solo Violin Modugno, “Volare” Wood & Mellin, “My One and Only Love” Bach, “Alleluja” from “Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen”
Tonight's Jazz Feature is a tribute to Canada and all things Canadian. It's been heard on The Jazz Show before but in these unsettled times I think it's time to hear it again. It's The Canadiana Suite played by and composed by the great Canadian pianist Oscar Peterson. Oscar performs the suite with his working trio of the time with Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums. It was recorded on Sept.9,1964 in New York. The 8 movement suite takes us across Canada from East to West in a series of musical portraits. It's time to be proud of Canada and the Canadiana Suite represents that pride.

On this edition of the Richard Crouse Show we meet musician, broadcaster, photographer, empresario, and author who joins me today to talk about his newest book “Rollin' Through the ‘70s. Weed, Woman and Song.” Born in Indiana, his recording career began in 1965 with a cover of jazz great Bobby Timmon's song “Moanin'” by his band The Chateaus. Since then, he was mentored by jazz legend Oscar Peterson, and worked with everyone from Janis Joplin and The Pointer Sisters to Linda Ronstadt and Howdy Doody. I've had a remarkable life, he says, and he joins me today to talk about Vietnam and his arrival in Canada, smoking hash and many other stories from his book “Rollin' Through the ‘70s. Weed, Woman and Song.” Then we get to know Christophe Lebold, a professor of literature, performance studies and rock culture from Strasbourg, France, joins me to talk about his book “Leonard Cohen: The Man Who Saw the Angels Fall.” It's an intriguing, massive, 543-page compendium that takes a deep metaphysical dive into the late Montrealer's world.

Jesus Molina discovered his musical gift at a very young age. Born in Colombia, you might assume that his music inspiration was cumbia or vallenato. That wasn't the case for Jesus. As a self-proclaimed YouTube baby, it was there that he discovered legendary jazz artists, such as Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum, Errol Garner, Bill Evans, Chick Corea, and Dizzy Gillespie - artists that captivated him and shaped the musician he is today. In 2016, Molina was honored with the prestigious Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation award, the Juan Luis Guerra Scholarship, which included music education at the Berklee College of Music. Since then, Jesus has emerged as one of the premier jazz keyboardists on the international stage. He recently released a new album titled “Selah” that was produced by the legendary Bobby Colomby. Here to chat with us about the new album, and his sudden rise to prominence on the jazz scene, is Jesus Molina.

Pianist Mulgrew Miller, born August 13, 1955, toured with the Duke Ellington Orchestra for three years right out of college, later accompanying singer Betty Carter, then three year stints with trumpeter Woody Shaw followed by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. He was already recording with his own groups when he joined drummer Tony Williams in quintet and trio settings, he also served as director of jazz studies at William Paterson college up unto his tragic death of a stroke at age 57. His playing never lost its roots as a church pianist, but he also incorporated the pyrotechnic technical influences of Oscar Peterson and the harmonic language of McCoy Tyner.
Roni Eytan, a renowned Israeli-born, New York based jazz harmonica player, performs with a passion that differs from other harmonica artists. Perhaps it's the region from which he derives-the Middle East and North Africa. His culture greatly influences his compositions and inspires his passions. Roni's work is influenced by harmonica legend Toots Thielemans but only partially. The folk cultures that make up the regions and his spiritual influences mostly inspire his writing. Roni Eytan stopped by my studio to talk about his harmonica work and how he got interested in this instrument. We talk about Roni's early fascination with music in Jerusalem, initially wanting to play the trumpet inspired by a film by a popular British band, the Beatles. After a short stint with the trumpet, he transitioned to the harmonica influenced by various sources, including friends and inspired by Israeli artists such as Yonathan Avishai and Avishai Cohen. Roni talks about his journey into jazz, mentioning significant influences like jazz legends Oscar Peterson and Charlie Parker as well as Toots Thielemans and the modern-day sound of French harmonica player Gregoire Maret. Educated at the Herbie Hancock Institute at UCLA in Los Angeles, California, Roni emphasizes the importance of mentorship and collaboration and how powerfully important to him and his work were Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. He also delves into different types of harmonicas, including diatonic, chromatic, and microtonal, and his innovative approach to microtonal harmonica playing for traditional music from his region. The history of the harmonica is fascinating, and I encourage you to delve into it. The conversation wraps up with Roni discussing his compositional process. For this episode, three tracks are presented from the concert the Roni Eytan Quartet presented in Columbus, Ohio, hosted by A Tribe for Jazz. The quartet includes Roni Eytan-harmonica, Gadi Lehavi-piano, Simon Willson-bass, and Alon Benjamini-drums. These tracks are not compressed in any fashion. These are the raw tracks from the show in Columbus, Ohio at the Columbus Dance Theater, thanks to A Tribe for Jazz. The three tracks are respectively: "Winter Dance"-Duet between Roni Eytan and Alon Benjamini: 5:22; "Focus-Hymn"-3:08; and "Melody People"-11:14. Thanks for listening. If you're a subscriber, you're one of the first ones to receive this episode. Subscribing gives you that honor. Following the opening track, Roni and I begin our conversation with how his interest in the harmonica started. I'm Steve Braunginn. Photo by Stephen Braunginn.

Now, I have a whole bunch of actual solutions to actual problems. In today's episode of "Superpowers for Good," I had the pleasure of speaking with Rick DellaRatta, the visionary founder of Jazz for Peace. Rick's insights into the power of music as a universal language for fostering peace and unity struck a deep chord with me and, I believe, with our listeners as well.Rick poetically expressed how "Jazz for Peace, coming through the trees, fills my heart like a celebration." This imagery captures the essence of what Rick has achieved through his work—using the universal appeal of jazz music to bridge divides, inspire hope, and foster a deeper connection among people, irrespective of their backgrounds.During our conversation, Rick recounted an incredibly moving experience in Ghana, where he performed for individuals who had never been exposed to jazz music before. His reflections on their genuine, unfiltered reactions to the music underscored the universal language of jazz. "It's funny because there's a video of it... and you can hear the people reacting to the music at certain points. They would start clapping and make sounds as it affected them, and they would just emote that it was affecting them," Rick shared. This experience in Ghana highlights the raw power of music to transcend cultural and linguistic barriers, offering a glimpse into the potential of the arts to build bridges and foster understanding. Rick's commitment to using his art to "espouse, so to speak, for who you are as a person, your growth as a human being, and what it means to you to make a difference for others" is a testament to the transformative potential of integrating one's passions with a purpose greater than oneself.Rick's journey with Jazz for Peace is a beacon of hope, showing us how the arts can be a powerful catalyst for positive change. As we continue to navigate a world rife with challenges, Rick's work serves as a poignant reminder of the beauty that can arise when creativity, humanity, and a commitment to peace converge.AI Episode Summary1. Initially, this manifested in his talent for "making lemonade out of lemons" when aiding outstanding causes. Over time, this evolved into Rick possessing actionable solutions to significant global problems, garnered from his experiences and the wisdom shared by the numerous exceptional individuals and causes he's encountered. An illustrative story from the interview is Rick's account of bringing together Israeli, Palestinian, and American musicians in 2002 at the United Nations. This endeavor was part of his ongoing effort to address the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a commitment that has won him over a million impressions on LinkedIn from people interested in his solution to this longstanding issue. This story exemplifies how Rick uses his superpower to foster peace and understanding through music and dialogue. To develop a superpower akin to Rick's, one might embrace humanity, creativity, artistry, and intellectuality, thereby allowing the "cream to rise to the top." By bringing out the best in oneself, one can inspire others, finding common ground even in the most challenging situations.
