POPULARITY
Maestro Nicolas Jaar is one of modern music's MVPs. His long run of solo albums plus the two superb AAL albums plus the Pink Floyd analogous cat-nip Darkside project, with guitarist Dave Harrington and now winningly drummer, Tlacael Esparza. Possibly their best album in this now The Smile analogous collective. Continually restless and evolving - often in one track - and always hugely listenable, my fave of the year so far.

For the past two weeks, our series on summer music festivals has uncovered the interplay of festival fashion and music and examined festival subcultures. But we've so far overlooked an essential reason that people attend music festivals: to experience transformational joy. At the start of summer 2021 it seemed like the pandemic was waning and that live music was coming back. But now, heading into the fall with the Delta variant, the fate of live music is once again in question. Caught in this limbo, we thought it might be a good time to get nostalgic and reflect on joyous music festival moments as we hope for more live music in the future. This week's episode features seven stories from listeners about their most surprising and wonderful moments at festivals past. The first story comes from musician and producer Dave Harrington of the band Darkside, who was once helped out of a musical rut by a Phish festival set Songs Phish (live Aug 4, 2017) - Everything In Its Right Place, Axis Bold As Love, Prince Caspian Darkside - Only Young Music scored by Zach Tenorio of Arc Iris Learn more about your ad choices. Greetings, Dead Freaks! On this episode, I am joined by Dave Harrington. Dave has a lot of musical irons in the fire but his band, Darkside, has returned from hiatus with a new album entitled, Spiral. We talk about putting the duo back together, improvisation, Dave's numerous other projects and, of course, Grateful Dead. After the chat, there is a heavy dose of 1974 Dead to keep your head right for late July. Nothing beats the heat like blowing your mind. Be sure to check out Spiral, the latest from Darkside, on your favorite streaming platform, directly from Matador Records, or on Bandcamp. As broadcast July 26, 2021 with plenty of extra palm trees for podcast travelers. Tonight we remember Aaliyah, a transformative talent in the worlds of music, film, and pretty much everything else she wanted to do. Yesterday marked the 20th anniversary of her final live performance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Exactly one month later, she would be gone, killed in a tragic aviation accident in The Bahamas that was also easily avoidable. After our rememberance, we started rocking the new tunes out this past weekend, with a particular focus on Leon Bridges & Chiiild, both out with new albums, along with new singles out from Lorde, James Blake, Childish Gambino & many other very worthy artists for our first hour New Muses Monday. With our 2nd half comes The Popcast on Mondays, and we had a slew of great new tunes there as well from Lil Nas X, Coldplay, Khalid, and many others.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Aaliyah – More Than A WomanLeon Bridges – SteamChiiild – WeightlessWinston Surfshirt feat Ramirez – All Of The Little ThingsBig Red Machine feat Fleet Foxes & Anais Mitchell – Phoenix Del Water Gap – Better Than I Know MyselfPart II (31:59)Lorde – Stoned At The Nail SalonJames Blake – Say What You WillNASAYA feat MARO – I SEE IT COMINGBrittany Howard – Stay High (Childish Gambino vers)La Luz feat Adrian Younge – Watching Cartoons DARKSIDE – I'm The EchoKilo Kish – American Gurl Part III (63:37)Lil Nas X – Industry Baby (feat. In this episode Bryan sets down with "Super" Dave Harrington. Whats all the performance vs outcome vs practice vs training etc? As an LEO are you Training to take a test or practicing to pass a test? As a Concealed carrier are you trained once you've passed the entry test? What is the difference anyway, S Dave breaks it down in a way only he can. The post Episode 19 – Dave Harrington- Training/Practice/Qual. first appeared on The Off Duty On Duty Podcast.
Riley Bowman interviews "Super" Dave Harrington, a retired US Army Special Forces veteran, former military contractor, firearms instructor, and talented guitarist. Dave spent much of his career training our nation's top soldiers how to fight and shoot at the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare School at Ft. Bragg. He knows a thing or two about how to develop skill for critical performance under pressure.
Our guest this week is Chris Forsyth, guitarist, bandleader, composer, and DIY lifer. His studio albums evoke the punk psychedelia of Television, balancing ‘70s rock grooves the loose, exploratory feel of the Dead. But as good as his studio LPs are, it might be live recordings that best showcase his sound. His latest is called First Flight. On it, he’s joined by guitarist Dave Harrington, drummer Ryan Jewell, and bassist Spencer Zahn on stage at Nublu in New York City on September 20th, 2019. Who knows how long it will be before we can safely cram into a room to take in some live jams, but in the meantime, the 40-some minutes of First Flight should help those missing the thrills of unexpected and immersive live music. Forsyth joined Transmissions to discuss his roots, time spent studying with Richard Lloyd of Television, and his motivations in opening a DIY space in Philadelphia, Jerry’s on Front. Does Transmissions make your listening life better? Help us continue doing it by pledging your support via our Patreon page. Doing so will get you access to our secret stash—including bonus audio, exclusive podcasts, printed ephemera, and vinyl records—and help us keep an independent publication going.
"There's been a washing away of that cultural element in music discovery online…there's no sense of authorship as a fan, and there's no interaction with the artist." Andrew Fox is a musician and songwriter out of New York. Outside of NYC, he's also spent stints in Berlin and Paris, and in his music, the energy of the Berliner techno scene and that romantic Parisian charm are nearly as present as the Brooklyn indie aesthetic that surrounded him when he was coming into his own in the mid-2000s. Before his most recent record, Shock by Shock, Andrew released music under the moniker, Visuals. The first Visuals EP was produced by Dave Harrington and Nicolas Jaar (together, Dave and Nico make up the band Darkside). The three of them went to school together and remain friends. Andrew's also released music on Nicolas Jaar's Other People label and he opened for Darkside in Berlin on their first tour, deejaying the main room of Berghain, the infamous techno mecca. We chatted about the artist communities that became his foundation in New York, as well as how the depreciation of music journalism and lack of social tools are negatively affecting online communities. Lots of great tunes throughout, and some insight into Andrew's next release, too. Featuring a hot new track from Bridget Kearny and Benjamin Lazar Davis; a live cut from Erik Deutsch's 5/1/20 release ‘Live from LunÁtico'; a beautiful new song from musical master Teddy Thompson; atmospheric wizardry from Stu Bogie, Dave Harrington, and Phil Weinrobe aka Night Sax; Brooklyn pianist/vocalist Damon Smith's fresh-off-the-press jam; Victoria's Reed's latest single ‘Life 2 Be Adored'; genius interpretations of West Side Story from Ben Allison, Steve Cardenas, and Ted Nash; Argentine diva Gabriela Anders; and the one and only FUNKADELIC.
Nicolas Jaar is one of the least predictable and most experimental dance music producers of the late 2000s and 2010s, composing reflective downtempo numbers indebted to jazz and modern classical as well as minimal techno. After establishing his name throughout the techno scene for his early EPs and singles, he reached a wider audience with the release of his acclaimed debut album, Space Is Only Noise, in 2011. He formed a neo-psychedelic duo called Darkside with multi-instrumentalist Dave Harrington; their only full-length, 2013's Psychic, was also heavily praised. While Jaar's subsequent work under his own name often moved in a more abstract direction, he continued making dance music under pseudonyms such as A.A.L. (Against All Logic), eventually collecting the project's work on the 2018 full-length 2012-2017.

Guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Dave Harrington is one hell of a nice guy and a monster on his instrument. A lifelong New Yorker, he spent his teenage years sneaking into shows at Tonic and the Knitting Factory, absorbing the music of Sex Mob, Bill Frisell and Marc Ribot, while studying bass with Brad Jones. For many years he was one half of the duo Darkside and more recently leads his own groups the Dave Harrington Group and the Merry Pranksters. He can frequently be founded performing in a variety of settings at Nublu in NYC as well as DJing parties around the world. He's a solid cat.
Guitarist Dave Harrington (Darkside), guitarist/bassist Robbie Seahag Mangano (Tom Morello, Sean Lennon), Steve Okonski (The National Reserve) & drummer David Butler (Guster, Marco Benevento) improvise a soundtrack to Gasper Noé's psychedelic melodramatic thriller, Enter The Void.

Episode 10: The Moment with GETOVERHER, Dave Harrington and Chris Black On this episode of Point we're looking backward, forward and at the present with three momentous creators. First up is a conversation with "Baby Oil" rapper and reminiscer GETOVERHER (https://soundcloud.com/getoverher) about growing up in Queens, "club row" in the 2000s, and moving forward. Then we talk with cross-genre multi-instrumentalist and Darkside co-frontman Dave Harrington (https://soundcloud.com/harringtone) about growing up playing jazz, NYC's early 2000s jam bands and pulling off an all-ECM Records Boiler Room set in NYC. Before and after all those moments, though, we chat, as always, with Chris Black (twitter.com/donetodeath) about Athleisure, Desiigner and jazz (again).

Another multi-instrumentalist! Also much much more than that, Dave Harrington is one half of the electronic / dance / jam band Darkside (@daftside-2). He was also once a little kid carrying an upright bass onto the subway to go to his lessons, which is a very very cute image. He tells me (and you) all about that, playing in party bands, meeting and teaming up with Nicolas Jaar, and much much more, on this week's episode of No Effects.
