1. Benny Benack III - BB3 - is a phenomenal, extraordinarily talented, Emmy nominated, double threat guy. He's a world class trumpet player and a world class singer/crooner all in one. He's a consummate showman too and he lights up the room. He's carrying on the tradition of the great crooners. Sinatra would be proud of him. He was a finalist in the Thelonious Monk Competition on trumpet, and he also won a prize in the Sarah Vaughan Vocal Competition. I saw Benny perform this summer at Tanglewood in Massachusetts with three other world class trumpeters: Randy Brecker, Jon Faddis and Bria Skonberg, and invited him to be a guest on the podcast. I'm pleased to say that Benny performs as a Guest Artist on my upcoming single! My featured song is “The Rich Ones”, my recent single with guest artist Randy Brecker. THIS SPECIAL EPISODE introduces “WHAT'S UP!”, my new compilation album featuring 10 of my recent singles. The songs run the gamut from instrumentals to a few vocals, and they cross genres from Jazz to Rock to Pop and Fusion. This episode features excerpts from the songs.“Rough Rider” captures a cool, 1960s, Spaghetti Western kind of vibe. You can almost picture Clint Eastwood giving it to the bad guys.“Day At The Races” is a fun, upbeat number that reflects the thrills and chills of the racetrack.“The Rich Ones All Stars” features 8 World Class musicians who were all guests on this podcast: Billy Cobham (drums), Randy Brecker (flugelhorn), John Helliwell (sax), Pat Coil (piano), Peter Tiehuis (guitar), Antonio Farao (keys), Elliott Randall (guitar) and David Amram (pennywhistle).“Lovely Girlie” is a fun, upbeat vocal song featuring John Helliwell of Supertramp on sax and Tony Carey of Rainbow on the organ.“Moon Shot” is a firey Jazz Rock Fusion number featuring 5x Grammy winner Mark Lettieri of Snarky Puppy and The Fearless Flyers on guitar solo.“The Cut Of The Knife” is my homage to jazz legend Dave Brubeck and his hit song “Take Five”, and it features Kerry Marx of the Grand Ole Opry band on guitar solo.“Sostice” is a sax driven number that was going to be called “Solstice” until my engineer screwed up the spelling and I loved the nonsense word that he came up with.“Saturday Morning” is the other vocal song in the collection. It's a positive, upbeat song with a reggae beat about the pleasures that we get from everyday events in our lives.“Lou's Blues” is my Jazz Fusion tone poem. I wrote it in the studio and we recorded it in one take.“The Gift” took my love song ballad and was transformed by Michael Abene, Grammy winning arranger, into a big band samba. That's me and my band mates as the rhythm section.Thank you for listening to this podcast, and to my music.
My guest, Bobby Sanabria, is a 7 time Grammy nominee. He is noted drummer, percussionist, composer, arranger, conductor, producer, documentary filmmaker, bandleader...and most important to me, educator. He has played with some of the all time greats, including Dizzy Gillespie, Mongo Santamaria, Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Ruben Blades, Randy Brecker, to named a few. He was named Percussionist of the Year in 2011 and 2013 by Jazz Journalist Association. He has a radio show in the New York area entitled, "Latin Jazz Cruise" on WBGO FM (wbgo.org). Simply a magnificent episode not to be missed! Produced, directed, edited and hosted by Stephen E Davis.
Episode 77: Steve Smith. The incredible, multi-faceted, Steve Smith was one of my favorite drummers growing up. His playing with Journey blew me mind, and the fact that he had a full-on jazz career alongside his rock success made him even more inspiring to me. Steve made Modern Drummer's Top 25 Drummers of All Time list and won the #1 All-Around Drummer Award five years in a row. His credits are stacked, from early gigs with Jean Luc-Ponty (alongside Allan Holdsworth), Focus, and Ronnie Montrose, to arena-filling hits with Journey, to leading his band Vital Information (for the past 4 decades). He's done sessions with Mariah Carey, Andrea Bocelli, Vasco Rossi, Zucchero, Savage Garden, Bryan Adams, and Zakir Hussain. On the jazz side, Steve has played with heavyweights like Steps Ahead, Tom Coster, Ahmad Jamal, Victor Wooten, Mike Stern, Randy Brecker, Frank Gambale, Stuart Hamm, Dweezil Zappa, Hiromi, and Bill Evans.Steve is one of the greatest to ever do it, and it was a total honor to have him on the show. I hope you enjoy my conversation with the legendary Steve Smith! Special thanks to Zildjian. I used their ALCHEM-E Perfect Tune Headphones in this episode and loved it. Today on Too Opinionated we sit down with multi-Grammy winning keyboardist George Whitty to talk about his new musical endeavour WHAT!!!! In addition to playing live with the likes of The Brecker Brothers, Herbie Hancock, the late David Sanborn and Chaka Khan, as producer and session keyboardist, Whitty's credits include Santana's blockbuster Supernatural (with Dave Matthews), Celine Dion's Falling Into You and These Are Special Times, Hancock's The Imagine Project and hundreds of others. He has won four Grammys for his work on Chaka Khan's The Woman I Am, Randy Brecker's 34th and Lex, Michael Brecker's Tales From the Hudson and the Brecker Bros.' Out of the Loop. Amidst all the searing soul balladry, deep spirituality, insightful and impactful social consciousness and rousing funk on their infectious dual album In the World, legendary, world-wise cats George Whitty and Ellis Hall – collectively pooling their decades of musical passion as Whitty Hall Artistic Team, aka WHAT!!!! - infuse a beloved, inevitable R&B classic into the enticing mix. Driven by Hall's trademark rousing vocals, their fiery, tight groovin' and brass fired twist on Isaac Hayes' co-penned “I Thank You” takes the 1968 Sam & Dave classic to fresh, exciting heights. It's a way for the duo to express gratitude for their incredible individual careers and all the serendipitous events that led them to this epic moment. One of many potential hit singles and film licensing opportunities from the 10-track collection, “Die Living” is a simmering blues-soul anthem whose title came to Whitty out of the blue one day and led him to create a powerfully rhythmic gospel-influenced song with a bit of a raw front porch vibe. Hall's combination of vocals and organ drive the track, and he also adds various guitar tracks. In part inspired by a cool response Willie Nelson once gave a journalist who dared to ask if he would ever think of retiring, “Die Living” offers dynamic food for thought about wringing as much meaningful life experience we can during our time on this planet. WHAT!!!!'s new album In the World releases on February 14th, 2025. Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)

This is the WORLD PREMIERE of “THE RICH ONES ALL STARS”, the new extended version of my recent single, “The Rich Ones”. The new version features me and my band, Project Grand Slam, along with 8 World Class musicians who previously have been guests on this podcast. Here's the back story.A few months ago I released a single, “The Rich Ones”, featuring Randy Brecker of Blood Sweat & Tears fame on flugelhorn. The single was very popular, and I decided to do something a bit daring and different. I've had many World Class musicians as guests on the podcast. So I asked several of them if they would record a new solo for the track and I would release a new, extended version of the tune. I'm pleased to say that everyone who I asked agreed. The new version, “The Rich Ones All Stars”, features the following musicians in this order.BILLY COBHAM of Mahavishnu Orchestra fame, recorded a new drum track for the tune. Billy is one of the most revered drummers of all time.I kept RANDY BRECKER'S flugelhorn solo from the original version of the tune because it's just so darn good.JOHN HELLIWELL was the saxophonist in Supertramp, one of the greatest bands of the rock era. John contributed a fantastic sax solo to the piece.PAT COIL is an acclaimed jazz pianist who has performed with Michael McDonald, Carmen McRae and many others. He added a sublime piano solo.PETER TIEHUIS is the heralded Dutch guitarist who performs with the Metropole Orkest. He contributed a wonderful guitar solo.ANTONIO FARAO is the extraordinary Italian jazz keyboard player who has performed with Joe Lovano and Jack DeJohnette among others. Antonio contributed a smokin' Fender Rhodes keyboard solo.ELLIOTT RANDALL is the incredible guitarist who gave the world the unforgettable solo on Steely Dan's “Reelin' In The Years”. Elliott gave me a classic guitar solo for the new track. And last, but certainly not least, is DAVID AMRAM, who is, simply put, a National Treasure at 96 years young. He was Leonard Bernstein's first composer in residence for the New York Philharmonic and also the composer for Shakespeare In The Park among many other accomplishments. David contributed a stunning Pennywhistle solo for the track. So there it is. 8 World Class musicians who have contributed their talent to this project.TO WATCH THE OFFICIAL VIDEO CLICK HERETO LISTEN AND STREAM THE TRACK AND FOR ALL LINKS CLICK HERE---------------------------------------------The Follow Your Dream Podcast:Top 1% of all podcasts with Listeners in 200 countries! For more information and other episodes of the podcast click here. In this conversation recorded during Botti at Sea '24, as part of the Jazz on Film series hosted by Lee Mergner, we showed a bit of Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool, Stanley Nelson's 2019 documentary about the great trumpeter. To talk about Miles' life and legacy, we asked another great trumpeter, Randy Brecker, who has always been a marvelous story teller. Perhaps no other artist lends themself more to stories than Miles Davis. Randy not only put Miles' singular influence in perspective, but shared some of his personal encounters with Miles, including their exchange about who discovered the wah wah peddle first.
