Going #2: The Dueling Rules of Nature That Every Good Earthling Needs to Know

Send us a textHappy Earth Day! There are two concepts that every person should understand to be a better Earthling: entropy and self-organization. It seems like a paradox, but systems on Earth are simultaneously breaking down into disorder and arranging themselves into complex superorganisms. Everything on Earth (well, really in the whole universe) is subject to the second law of thermodynamics, which means it all dies and decays. But with access to steady flows of energy, organisms, ecosystems, and human societies can hold back the death and decay for a spell. After dropping the kids off at the pool, Asher, Rob, and Jason cover the interplay of entropy and self-organization and contemplate how to manage the inevitability of entropy with elegance (beyond morphing into a lizard person).Originally recorded on 4/8/25.Warning: This podcast occasionally uses spicy language.Sources/Links/Notes:Geoffrey West, Scale: The Universal Laws of Growth, Innovation, Sustainability, and the Pace of Life in Organisms, Cities, Economies, and Companies, Penguin Books, 2018.Robin Wall Kimmerer, The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World, Scribner, 2024.William Rees, “End game: the economy as eco-catastrophe and what needs to change,” Real-World Economics Review, 2019.The laws of thermodynamics, as explained by the website “Physics for Idiots""Telegraph Road" - song by Dire StraitsDavid Owen, "Green Manhattan," The New Yorker, October 10, 2004.Other Crazy Town episodes you might like:Crazy Town 100 - A Temporary Techno Stunt: Tom Murphy on Falling out or Love with ModernityCrazy Town 35 - Self Domestication and Overshoot, or… the Story of Foxes and Russian MelodramaCrazy Town Bonus Riff - Vanilla Andreessen, Pygmy Marmosets, and Hi-Tech DelusionsSupport the show

Send us a textWho knew that the breakthrough moment of AI sentience would come from interacting with an annoying neo-Luddite?After failing to raise a single dollar for PCI's newest initiative — the $350 billion Transdisciplinary Institute for Phalse Prophet Studies and Education (TIPPSE) —  Jason, Rob, and Asher devise the only profitable pitch for raising capital: using AI technology to cure the loneliness that technology itself causes. The only problem is that AI chatbots won't talk to us, as evidenced by Asher's experience of being blocked by an AI “friend.” So Asher turns to the flesh-and-blood author of Blood in the Machine, Brian Merchant, to discuss the rise of the neo-Luddite movement — the only people who might be able to stand your humble Crazy Town hosts. Brian Merchant is a writer, reporter, and author. Send us a textRecovering technology booster Tom Murphy visits Crazy Town to discuss his journey from shooting lasers at the moon, to trying to "solve" the energy predicament, to falling out of love with modernity itself. Asher, Jason, Rob, and Tom discuss the roots and short-lived nature of modernity, which has not only shaped the world we inhabit but conquered our very imaginations. They reminisce about aspects of hi-tech society that have already fallen away in its hubristic march towards mastering (or should we say undermining?) nature. We also get into turning 40, working at SportChek, the water-skiing/wakeboarding/tubing scene, and John talks about seeing Limp Bizkit in Belfast and meeting Fred Durst. Plus, Matt jokingly asks for a job and then is horrified to learn he might get it, Stefan picks his favorite tweet from the cursed Trump/Biden debate, and John pays tribute to the recently passed lead singer of Crazy Town, Shifty Shellshock. AI BIZNESS: n this part of the conversation, David Manheim discusses his experience with drugs and addiction, as well as the importance of compassion and connection in recovery. He also pays tribute to the lead singer of Crazy Town, Shifty Shellshock, who died of an accidental drug overdose. The conversation then transitions to an interview with Rachel Elizabeth Slocum, a TikTok star known for her comedic content. Rachel reflects on her addiction to drugs, particularly oxys and heroin, and the impact it had on her life and relationships. She also discusses the toxic relationship she had with her partner and the challenges of being a young mother while struggling with addiction. Rachel shares her experiences in detox and rehab, including her time at Crossroads in Antigua. She talks about her journey to recovery and the importance of finding the right support system. Rachel reflects on her drug-fueled relationship and the progression of her addiction, from pills to heroin to crack. She describes the all-consuming nature of her addiction and the lengths she went to in order to maintain her habit. Despite facing numerous challenges and near-death experiences, Rachel continued to use drugs until a friend called CPS on her. The intense cravings for drugs can lead individuals to go to great lengths to obtain them, even at the expense of their own health and safety. Recovery is a journey that often involves multiple attempts and different treatment approaches. Finding the right support system and treatment program is crucial for long-term success. The stigma surrounding addiction can make it difficult for individuals to seek help and find understanding from others. Recovery is possible, and with the right support and determination, individuals can rebuild their lives and find a path to a healthier future. Rachel's addiction escalated from pills to heroin to crack, leading to a destructive and all-consuming lifestyle. She went to great lengths to maintain her habit, including manipulating others, robbing people, and hiding her drug use while working as a dental assistant. Despite facing numerous challenges and near-death experiences, Rachel continued to use drugs until a friend called CPS on her, prompting her to seek help. Her son's arrest and subsequent sobriety also played a role in her decision to get sober and turn her life around. Addiction can lead to isolation and a loss of connection with others, but reaching out and offering support can make a significant difference in someone's life. Recovery requires putting sobriety first and making it a priority above all else. Being a single mother while in recovery can be challenging, but finding strength in sobriety can provide stability and a loving environment for children.
