Having grown up in Atlanta, with a long lineage of preachers and connections to gospel music to inspire him, GRAMMY-nominated Carlos Simon's music ranges from concert music for large and small ensembles, to film scores with influences of jazz, gospel, and neo-romanticism.Carlos is the current composer-in-residence for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and he frequently composes for its National Symphony Orchestra and Washington National Opera. This past season featured the premiere of his Gospel Mass, with Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, a work reimagining the traditional mass with gospel soloists and choir, with visual creations from Melina Matsoukas.Carlos frequently curates concert programs, which often highlight his own music as well as that of close collaborators. Curation concerts have recently been programmed by Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Boston Chamber Players, Tanglewood Festival for Contemporary Music, and the Kennedy Center.Carlos also released the live premiere recording of brea(d)th, a landmark work commissioned by Minnesota Orchestra and written in collaboration with Marc Bamuthi Joseph, conducted by Jonathan Taylor Rush. “Arguably the most important commission of Simon's career so far” (The New York Times), brea(d)th was written following George Floyd's murder as a direct response to America's unfulfilled promises and history of systemic oppression against Black Americans.  I'm especially proud to have discussed the piece with Carlos in this episode.

This is it, folks! The episode you've all been waiting for….our birth story! Matthew and I sit down (in bed, as always) with our first guest - less than a week old baby Maya. She lies quietly (for the most part, you might hear some coos and little grunts in the background at times) on Matthew's chest while we recount the story of our home birth, while it's still fresh in our minds. We take you from the beginning of the birthing waves (contractions) when they started late Saturday night, all the way to delivery. It just so happens that the night it all started was a special date night, and one that we're sure to remember forever. I purchased tickets to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra performing music by the famous composer John Williams earlier in the year as a Father's Day present for Matthew. Its date being a precarious one (close to our due date), we weren't sure if we'd end up going. Turns out that Maya must've known, and was waiting for us to have this special time together before her arrival. It would be a couple of hours and attempts to sleep the discomfort off that I would realize I was in active labor. I spent this time in our bathtub, listening to Hypnobabies while Matthew sat with me, made me a PB&J and kept me hydrated. Over the next few hours our birth team, which included a midwife and 2 apprentices, as well as 5 close family members, arrived and assumed their roles of supporting myself and Matthew. I labored for the majority of the time in the giant kiddie blow up pool and eventually delivered on what the midwives refer to as the “birthing stool.” I won't give all the fun details away. You'll hear all of that in the episode. But let's just say it was intense, intimate, spiritual and magical. The whole event was 12 hours total, exactly the amount of time I envisioned when I mentally planned the birth experience. There were a lot of tears, a fair amount of blood, some laughs and so much love. So join us from our bedroom - where we made our baby, birthed her and are now hanging out with her and talking about the whole darn thing. He plays within a huge dynamic range, making him the perfect match for quiet piano jazz performances to hard- hitting rock gigs. He can play with everything from precision to reckless abandon and make it truly his own. He currently is a member of Kenosha Kid, Weisshund, Nelson Patton, Lonnie Holley, The Trey Wright Trio and The Mace Hibbard Quintet. He has toured, performed and/or recorded with Liv Warfield, The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Jim White, Larkin Poe, Lonnie Holley, Jeff Coffin, Shahzad Ismaily, Col. That's when our Declaration of Independence was ratified by the Second Continental Congress establishing the United States of America as an independent country. SynopsisT.J. Anderson was the first Black composer to hold the title of composer-in-residence with an American symphony orchestra. That was in Atlanta, when Robert Shaw was the music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. For Atlanta, Anderson orchestrated Scott Joplin's opera Treemonisha, resulting in the first full staging of that 1911 work, about 60 years after it was written, a performance that was broadcast on NPR in 1972. In addition to orchestrating Joplin's opera, Anderson wrote a few of his own, including Soldier Boy and Walker, which was based on the life of David Walker, an anti-slavery activist. One of Anderson's concert works, Squares, was premiered on today's date in 1966 by the Oklahoma Symphony and later recorded by the Baltimore Symphony for inclusion in a now-classic set of recordings issued by Columbia Records in 1970, The Black Composer Series.Squares is abstract and modernist, perhaps reflecting Anderson's academic background of composition studies at the esteemed Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and with French composer Darius Milhaud at the Aspen School of Music. Before his retirement in 1990, Anderson also taught composition at several universities from Massachusetts to California.Music Played in Today's ProgramT.J. How can a dairy operation balance the ESG demands of consumers while still creating delicious cheeses and ice cream? Tillamook County Creamery Association executive vice president of stewardship Paul Snyder joined The Food Institute Podcast to discuss the brand's sustainability goals, its Oregon-based history, and the company's expansion to the U.S. East Coast. More About Tillamook County Creamery Association: The Tillamook Way is a way of life—the way our farmer-owners have done things since 1909. We cared for our farmer-owners, who cared for the land, which sustained healthier cows, which provided better milk. And better milk made better dairy products. It's a simple recipe that we've followed for over a century and it has never failed. More About Paul Snyder: Paul Snyder joined the Tillamook County Creamery Association (TCCA) in 2019, as Executive Vice President of Stewardship. In this role, Paul leads several functions including corporate responsibility, sustainability, community engagement, corporate communications, government affairs, farm services, and co-op member relations. Before joining TCCA, Paul served as Global Vice President – Corporate Responsibility at InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), based in Atlanta, Georgia. In that role, Paul co-led IHG's global corporate responsibility function and directly oversaw sustainability strategy and execution for the company's nearly 5,200 hotels worldwide. Additionally, he directed the company's Americas Public Affairs activities, its U.S. based Foundation and several community-based and diversity-focused initiatives. He also held various other leadership positions during his time at IHG in development, operations, marketing, and brand management. Prior to joining IHG, Paul worked at Marriott International in the company's Brand Management, Development and IT departments. He started his career in the hospitality industry with Winegardner & Hammons, Inc. as a line level employee at a Holiday Inn hotel and was promoted into managerial positions in both the Food & Beverage and Rooms departments. In addition to his role at TCCA, Paul currently serves on the board of directors for Newtrient, an organization that partners with dairy farmers, technology providers and other stakeholders to help them make informed decisions regarding manure management opportunities and challenges. Additionally, he serves on the Advisory Committee of Oregon's Greenhouse Gas Emissions Program 2021 Rulemaking — a new Climate Protection Program to limit greenhouse gas emissions from some of the most significant sources in Oregon. Prior to relocating to Oregon to join TCCA, Paul was a committed community leader in Atlanta, having served on the Boards of the Georgia Center for Non-Profits, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Opera and the Metro Atlanta Chapter of the American Red Cross. He also led the Marketing efforts for the Atlanta chapter of Conscious Capitalism. Paul earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature at Lawrence University and an MBA at Cornell University's Johnson Graduate School of Management. Throughout the summer, we'll be developing a brand podcast that will have a new name and a new sound. In the meantime, we'll be revisiting some of our favorite interviews from our first four years while still keeping you up-to-date on things to do in and around Atlanta. In 2018, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra conductor and music director Robert Spano announced that he'd be leaving the orchestra in 2021. The pandemic postponed that for a year, and he spent the 2021-22 season as co-artistic director with ASO principal guest conductor Donald Runnicles. This weekend, the ASO's season finale will also serve as Spano's farewell. Soon after the announcement of his departure, Bo Emerson spoke with Spano about his time in Atlanta leading the ASO and you can hear that on this week's podcast along with our usual roundup of some things to do in and around Atlanta. Taki Watanga was conceived on the Paris Metro. A simple conversation that rapidly turned into a dare. “Be brave and take hold of your obvious and quite frankly unique talents”.In 2019 Mark Hedges, the director of London's West End production of Phantom of theOpera, presented a challenge to Chrissy: develop a drag queen persona for cabaret and burlesque shows. She seized the opportunity and immediately began collaborating withhim to create her alter ego: Taki Watanga. To create this unique personality Chrissy would draw on her own fascinating life as a performer, a curious seeker, experienced yoga practitioner and adventures.... Growing up in the aftermath of the civil rights movement, the Atlanta native was immersed in the soulful oratory of the African-American community.Melding that experience with her Scottish and Native American ancestry contributed to her unique cross-cultural perspective. While still a teenager Chrissy earned the opportunity to perform with Robert Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in Leonard Bernstein's Mass.Soon after she moved to Nashville, Tennessee where she was a singer and dancer forOpryland U.S.A. During her residency in the Home of County Music', she recorded background vocals for Grammy-winning country artists Reba McEntire, Tammy Wynette. Through her diverse career, Chrissy continues to delight audiences with her unfettered wit, expressive playfulness, and exuberant personality.https://www.instagram.com/taki_watanga/https://www.facebook.com/christiineflowers.actricevoicetalent/http://www.christine-flowers.com/main.php?ca=10&p=12&tt=teaching&lang=enhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/christine-flowers-25073311/?originalSubdomain=frhttps://yogaflowerparis.com/Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/join/Laviecreative)
