This week, Josh and Evan talk about the fine line between minimalism and hoarding, and trash and treasure. Sometimes those lines blur and everything is the same! Do the guys have anything they want to pass on, or should everything be sold or tossed? Maybe Josh will pass down some guns and furniture, and maybe Evan will sell some Pokémon cards and hold onto old toys. If you listen to the end you'll hear a little-known story about why Evan is the way that he is. As always there's some "sticking it to the man" and a Fact of the Week too!
Happy New Year, everyone! The calendar has changed, but the Screeners haven’t...right down to the part where Josh hasn’t seen the movie they’re reviewing. It’s a shame, too, because this episode’s main event is Molly’s Game, written and directed by Aaron Sorkin. High-stakes poker, the FBI, and skiing weren’t enough to bring Josh out of his cave, which seems like a bad omen for the year in general. Oh well; we suppose there’s still time for him to make a resolution or two. In the meantime, the rest of the crew will be there for you, watching movies all year long and taunting him. In honor of Aaron Sorkin, this episode’s Top 3 focuses on everyone’s favorite directorial debuts. There have been some pretty great first efforts throughout the years, so competition could be heated. Maybe Josh will join in the fun if the Screeners ever decide to do “worst directorial debuts”. We won’t hold our collective breath. Make sure to let us know your thoughts on Molly’s Game and your favorite first films over on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/screenerscast/), and we’ll see you next time for our review of The Post! The second epoch of The Two Jamokes begins in earnest, and luckily, there is a stellar Pick of the Week to start off with. Maybe Josh will start doing voice again? It’s hard to say. We’re picking up on some trends in comics, some good, some bad. We even did some War Corner, but didn’t realize it at the time. So that will be a fun game for the listeners. Hey, friends! Head on over across 110th Street, because it's time for a new episode of Mousterpiece Cinema. This week on the show, Josh and Scott invite friend of the show Jason Bailey of Flavorwire to help commemorate the 20th anniversary of Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown, based on the Elmore Leonard novel Rum Punch. This story of a flight attendant playing a con on ATF agents as well as a menacing gun-runner didn't get quite the fanfare of Pulp Fiction (also a Miramax release in the 1990s, back when Disney owned that studio, in case you're wondering why this movie counts!), but is it secretly Tarantino's best film? Should people give it more of a chance in 2017? Or is it more sluggish than expected? (Maybe Josh is the only one who thinks that.) Find out now!
For anyone paying attention to...just about anything last year, the best way to describe 2016 might just be, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” Unless, of course, you’re Josh, who doesn’t know if he’s seen a “best of” anything just yet. Anyway, 2016 certainly had its low points, but the quality of cinematic releases wasn’t one of them. There were some standout films last year, and the Screeners have made it their mission to find as many of them as they can. This episode is...the Best of 2016.Longtime listeners know the drill here, but if you’re new, you’re, um, not that far behind. It’s your basic top-ten countdown list, with the caveat that only Daniel has seen every movie released in 2016, so he’s the only one who can make a proper list. We think he might be living in a theater; frankly, we’re worried about him. We’ll put the lists below for anyone who happens to be a fan of spoiling their own surprises (you’re the kid who broke into Dad’s office just so you could find out if you got that Power Rangers action figure, aren’t you?), but if you’re not in that crowd, we have just a couple more paragraphs here before you should stop reading and start listening. After the top 10 is over, the Screeners have a couple of palate cleansers (or palate ruiners, depending on your perspective) for you. First off, they’ll recount their biggest disappointment of the year (did anything disappoint Chris last year?). Up next is the overall worst movie of the year, then one that each host liked despite everyone else* hating it, and, to round things out on a sour note, the movie they didn’t like despite all the good things everyone else said about it.By this point, the Screeners were approximately 6 hours into recording the episode, so a vote was taken; the best TV of 2016 was mercifully cut from the roster, and the episode was wrapped up. Rest assured, though; Chris and Melody really loved WestWorld.Anyway, that’s it for 2016. Finally. It’s over. We’ll all tell our grandchildren about it in muted, wavering tones. Join the Screeners next time for a review of M. Night Shyamalan’s Split...if there is a next time. Even if there’s not, we’re sure at least Facebook will survive, so remember us there.Oh, right. Maybe it’s critics; maybe it’s everyone else on the podcast. As we’ve said time and time again, there are no rules, and everything is meaningless. OK, so we’ve at least said the first part. Maybe Josh has just thought the second part.
