Solo episode where I just talk about all the things I watched on Saturday. Hopefully it doesn't suck! Probably a good chance it does though.

This episode is brought to you by Anglican Aid. Your gift will strengthen churches and help transform communities. You can donate to With All Due Respect's featured causes here. This week, our hosts are grappling with the topic of sin. They discuss what sin is, and then ponder the relationship of desire to sin. In particular, is all sinful desire ... sinful? Michael and Megan don't entirely see eye to eye on this one!Writer and podcaster Elizabeth Oldfield, well-known as the host of The Sacred podcast, then joins the show for a wide-ranging discussion, including on her new book Fully Alive: Tending to the Soul in Turbulent Times. Finally, our hosts discuss the confronting - and beautiful - film Manchester By The Sea (2016).(01:32) - - For Arguments Sake (22:19) - - Be Our Guest (47:50) - - Through The Wardrobe Help internally displaced people in Africa!Disasters and conflicts have led to a record number of over 75 million internally displaced people, or IDPs, around the world. IDPs are people who have been forced to flee their homes but have not crossed international borders. Almost half of all IDPs - more than the population of Australia and New Zealand combined - are in sub-Saharan Africa. Most of the displaced have left everything behind: their homes, belongings, and livelihoods. They urgently need food, shelter, clothing, and trauma counselling. So Anglican Aid has launched a Forced to Flee Emergency Appeal to provide essential aid to IDPs in Sudan, Nigeria, Kenya, and beyond. This aid will be distributed by local churches, who are sacrificially providing for the needs of the displaced, and pointing them to the God who is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. To find out more about this appeal and make a tax-deductible gift, visit anglicanaid.org.au/wadr.

We've got a couple of depressing movies to dive into this week in the show. Kevin's choice is the 2013 Coen brothers film Inside Llewyn Davis about a struggling folk musician in 1960's New York City. Drew chose the 2016 drama film Manchester by the Sea from director Kenneth Lonergan. This movie follows a man who, after his brother dies, ends up becoming the sole guardian of his teenage nephew. This week on Remainders, we discuss the 2016 film Manchester By the Sea. A story of grief, depression, trauma and confronting the past, Kenneth Lonergan directs a movie that manages to deal with these difficult themes while also showing the imperfections in life and the awkward, sometimes funny moments in between. A case of realism with a touch of levity, Casey Affleck plays Lee, a man who upon losing his brother must step into the parental role for his nephew, played by Lucas Hedges. Both give incredible performances and let's the audience feel for their characters as they are exposed and vulnerable in times of death.Other topics include best performances by Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams, Darren's upcoming Punk Rock & Paintbrushes at When We Were Young festival, recent and upcoming live shows, the month of Friday the 13th marathons, and Elvis in the movies.Songs of the WeekSee See Rider by LaVern BakerShake Some Action by the Flamin' GrooviesAll songs on the Remainders Jukebox PlaylistWebsiteFacebookInstagramYouTubeTwitter

Most movies it is nice to have a box of popcorn but in this case, you'll need a box of tissues. A heart wrenching and dramatic story that has you the whole way through. Award winning acting from Casey Affleck and award winning writing/ directing from Kenneth Lonergan. Released on November 18, 2016 this film is a slow and cold journey. It is worth watching if you enjoy great acting and writing and you enjoy a true drama.

Team Deakins is joined by talented production designer Ruth De Jong (OPPENHEIMER, NOPE, MANCHESTER BY THE SEA). A creative scion of the accomplished production designer Jack Fisk, Ruth explains how Jack recruited her to assist him on THERE WILL BE BLOOD and the subsequent ten year partnership in which he was her mentor. She later reflects on how she's grown after each project as well as how to stay malleable after the train that is production leaves the station. Ruth also describes the invigorating responsibility she felt to deliver on OPPENHEIMER after Christopher Nolan cut days from the schedule to balance the film's budget and the timely encouragement he gave her deep in production. She also shares her experiences working on TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN and how she worked off illustrations and paintings created by David Lynch to build and design the series' many scenes. - This episode is sponsored by TrueCut Motion & Dallas Film Commission & Falca Instagram: @truecutmotion & @dallasfilmcommission & @falcagram - Recommended Viewing: OPPENHEIMER
Editor - Jennifer Lame ACE, Additional Editor - Mike Fay, 1st Assistant Editor - Nick Ellsberg and 1st Assistant Film Editor - Tom Foligno The OPPENHEIMER editing team of Jennifer Lame ACE, Mike Fay, Nick Ellsberg and Tom Foligno applied their collective storytelling talents to film technology both old and new. While Jennifer and Mike worked to shape and refine Christopher Nolan's story into an instant classic, Nick and Tom were tasked with mastering a hybrid film and digital workflow to make the most of Nolan's brilliant 70MM IMAX footage. Based on the 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, the film chronicles the life of American theoretical physicist and polymath J. Robert Oppenheimer. The story predominantly focuses on Oppenheimer's early studies, his direction of the Manhattan Project during World War II, and his eventual fall from grace due to his 1954 security hearing; juxtaposed with this are events surrounding Oppenheimer's relationship with Lewis Strauss, a senior member of the United States Atomic Energy Commission who sees Oppenheimer as a rival. It stars Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer and Robert Downey Jr. as Strauss, with the remaining ensemble supporting cast including Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek and Kenneth Branagh. JENNIFER LAME, ACE While Jen claims that her "wheelhouse" in editorial is films that feature people talking in rooms, as her work on MANCHESTER BY THE SEA (2016) and MARRIAGE STORY (2019) both prove, you wouldn't know it by her standout work in bigger features like Christopher Nolan's TENET (2020) and BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER (2022). MIKE FAY As Jen Lame was wrapping up things on WAKANDA FOREVER, she entrusted the early assembly duties on OPPENHEIMER to Mike Fay. Prior to OPPENHEIMER, Mike had been sharpening his skills as an assistant editor on LIFE OF PI (2012) and GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE (2021) and as a VFX Editor on JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 - PARABELLUM (2019) and BULLET TRAIN (2022). NICK ELLSBERG Nick and Mike Fay had more than a passing familiarity prior to OPPENHEIMER. Like Mike, Nick worked on BULLET TRAIN (2022), GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE (2021), and JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 - PARABELLUM as an assistant editor. TOM FOLIGNO A veteran of the Marty Scorsese film school, having worked as an assistant on CASINO (1995), BRINGING OUT THE DEAD (1999), GANGS OF NEW YORK (2002) and THE AVIATOR (2004), Tom was able to return to his film editing roots and dust off his splicer for his role in the film cutting room on OPPENHEIMER. Editing OPPENHEIMER In our talk with the OPPENHEIMER editing team, we discuss... The beauty of awkward people talking in rooms Keeping up the pace on a three-hour biopic Whistling past the biggest scene in the movie because you already know it will be great Bringing film workflows back to life, bigger than ever Loving Chris Nolan's "all business' approach in the cutting room The Credits Visit Extreme Music for all your production audio needs Check out the latest with Avid Media Composer Subscribe to The Rough Cut podcast and never miss an episode Visit The Rough Cut on YouTube

Kenneth Lonergan wrote and directed "Manchester by the Sea" A great film that earned Best Original Screenplay and Best Male Lead Actor and the film deserves. It's a film that heavily deals with guilt and grief due to a tragic loss of family. As heavy the emotions are in the this film, Lonergan was able to write some comedy in the film, almost making into a black comedy. We need some type of release from our troubles even though they wont fix anything. Life always goes on but it's important how you go about it. I love how the film tackles with life and it goes into different avenues about it. I enjoyed watching this film so much due to the actors that carry the dialog, especially Patrick Chandler, the character almost steals the film. The casting is great. You wold think Casey Affleck and Lucas Hedges would be an odd combo to carry each other but they proved to win us over even though I never had a problem about that to begin with. My favorite shot of the film is a scene toward the first act where you see the boat with the characters on it and obviously the camera is on a mobile surface shooting the boat in a full shot. As boring as it can be, it shows what this film is going to be about. It's going to be about family and how we can support each in tough times. Don't give up on your people.Four out of four tokes.
This movie does so many things well, it's a great one for both novelists and screenwriters to have in their repertoire of reference stories. We're studying stakes and empathy this season and boy does Manchester by the Sea deliver. If you haven't seen it yet, add it to your short list and have the tissues handy. Kenneth Lonergan doesn't think there's a real difference between comedy and drama, at least not in the way he writes and directs. The playwright-screenwriter-director talks with Marc about the lie of sentimentality, how ideas collapse when he's writing and new ideas emerge, and why he hopes to get to 95% satisfaction with his work (he's gotten to about 90% so far). That work includes Manchester By The Sea, Margaret, You Can Count On Me, and plays like The Waverly Gallery, which is now on Broadway.
