Jonny Gould's Jewish State

Our guest today is Nicholas Martin, movie producer and writer of the biographical drama, “Golda”. Golda was seven years in the making, and as you'll hear, Nicholas has delved so deeply into her story - and by extension Israel's story from independence to the 1970s - which makes this such a captivating interview. He's also made deep friendships with Golda's family and throughout Israel. A highly experienced and talented filmmaker who's become a world authority on the period, but didn't know a great deal about Israeli history before he started. Nicholas' previous film was the hilarious, Florence Foster-Jenkins. Golda also stars Liev Schreiber as Henry Kissinger and Camille Cottin as Lou Kadar, Golda's assistant. Our episode music has just been composed in support of Israel by my friend Bryan Edery with concert violinist Miriam Kramer. He's called it “Israel in my Heart, ner Tamid”. Thank you for allowing it to be our beautiful episode theme tune. I'd been talking to Nicholas about an interview for two years, before we eventually sat down in his London home for this considered and emotional discussion. I want to thank Nicholas for being such an open interviewee. This is one of the best. You can buy "Golda" on Apple TV, Amazon Video, Sky Store, Microsoft Store, Rakuten TV, Google Play Movies, YouTube as download or rent it on Amazon Video, Microsoft Store, Google Play Movies, YouTube, Rakuten TV, Apple TV, Sky Store, Curzon Home Cinema online. The new film Golda – starring a bewitching Helen Mirren as Golda Meir, the Iron Lady of Israel, was written and produced by Nicholas Martin. Martin is best known for writing the 2016 film Florence Foster Jenkins. With two amazing biopics about strong, defiant women, we talk about how to find the moment that defines a character and how to focus the story on a short period of time instead of a cradle-to-grave saga. For Florence Foster Jenkins, it's her journey to Carnegie Hall and for Golda Meir, it's the 18-day Yom Kippur War. To Martin's surprise, that focus on the war turned the film Golda into a thriller.  “The structure was dictated by the phases of the war,” says Martin. “So, it was really a thriller and a war film rather than a personal drama about a woman's struggle to command a nation at war. That's what gave it its thriller shape.”  To pinpoint that moment, Martin turned to a quote from Winston Churchill.  “He famously said at the beginning of the Second World War, when he became Prime Minister, ‘All of my mistakes have brought me to this point.' … And then I thought I think this is the same for Golda… We've got such a thumping narrative of the Yom Kippur War, such a clear beginning, middle and end and she's under so much pressure, I think if we cut away from this it would dilute the tension and it would be mixing genres in a way. So, it seems that just sticking to this one story which is complicated enough, let's try and keep it simple, tell this one story well,” says Martin.    Listen to this episode to find out more about Martin's research process, how learning to use a spreadsheet upped Martin's structure game, and hear why Meryl Streep threatened to never speak to Martin again while making Florence Foster Jenkins.

We all know the power of wishes, and cinema loves to tell wish stories. They can be inspirational or cautionary, and Taylor and Riley have chosen two fantastical films to showcase in this episode. There's the story of Florence Foster Jenkins who wishes to perform at Carnegie Hall, and then we have the story of Three Thousand Years of Longing where wishes might just cause more harm than good. Our wish is that you love these two movies as much as we did! And, of course, Nick has made us a very punny cocktail - The "Djinn" Sour. Cheers! "Djinn" Sour - 2 ounces London dry gin - 1 ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed - 1/2 ounce simple syrup - 1/2 ounce egg white or aquafaba (optional) - Garnish: lemon twist (optional) - Garnish: 3 drops Angostura bitters (optional) Steps - Add the gin, lemon juice, simple syrup and egg white or aquafaba into a shaker and vigorously dry-shake (without ice). - Add ice and shake again until well-chilled. - Strain into a coupe glass. - Garnish with a lemon twist.

After a hiatus of four months, Diggory and Oscar are back to spread Hugh Grant-related Christmas cheer! First up on the agenda is new film Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, which premiered in November but will be largely enjoyed on Netflix when it's released on December 23. Hugh has a very fleeting cameo in this 'whodunnit' starring Daniel Craig, but nonetheless it's got Hugh Grant fans talking! The boys also debrief on an ABC News 20 years retrospective on Love Actually, where Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson and others reflect on making the Christmas classic. Can you believe Love Actually came out 20 years ago....! We can't. Finally, Digs and Oscar ponder exciting news that Hugh has been cast in another HBO show, The Palace, following on from his success in The Undoing. This time, he's ticking off starring with yet another leading lady in Kate Winslet. There aren't a lot of details at present, but the fact it's being directed by Stephen Frears (who Hugh knows from A Very English Scandal and Florence Foster Jenkins) is certainly an early Christmas present. We hope you enjoyed this podcast episode of Hugh's News which is a Taking Hugh for Granted production.
